    Abstract: In her groundbreaking investigation from the perspective of the aesthetics of religion, Isabel Laack explores the religion and art of writing of the pre-Hispanic Aztecs of Mexico. Inspired by postcolonial approaches, she reveals Eurocentric biases in academic representations of Aztec cosmovision, ontology, epistemology, ritual, aesthetics, and the writing system to provide a powerful interpretation of the Nahua sense of reality. Laack transcends the concept of “sacred scripture” traditionally employed in religions studies in order to reconstruct the Indigenous semiotic theory and to reveal how Aztec pictography can express complex aspects of embodied meaning. Her study offers an innovative approach to nonphonographic semiotic systems, as created in many world cultures, and expands our understanding of human recorded visual communication.     Abstract: "In Ottoman Land Reform in the Province of Baghdad, Keiko Kiyotaki traces the Ottoman reforms of tax farming and land tenure and establishes that their effects were the key ingredients of agricultural progress. These modernizing reforms are shown to be effective because they were compatible with local customs and tribal traditions, which the Ottoman governors worked to preserve. Ottoman rule in Iraq has previously been considered oppressive and blamed with failure to develop the country. Since the British mandate government's land and tax policies were little examined, the Ottoman legacy has been left unidentified. This book proves that Ottoman land reforms led to increases in agricultural production and tax revenue, while the hasty reforms enacted by the mandate government ignoring indigenous customs caused new agricultural and land problems"--

    Abstract: "In Ottoman Land Reform in the Province of Baghdad, Keiko Kiyotaki traces the Ottoman reforms of tax farming and land tenure and establishes that their effects were the key ingredients of agricultural progress. These modernizing reforms are shown to be effective because they were compatible with local customs and tribal traditions, which the Ottoman governors worked to preserve. Ottoman rule in Iraq has previously been considered oppressive and blamed with failure to develop the country. Since the British mandate government's land and tax policies were little examined, the Ottoman legacy has been left unidentified. This book proves that Ottoman land reforms led to increases in agricultural production and tax revenue, while the hasty reforms enacted by the mandate government ignoring indigenous customs caused new agricultural and land problems"--

    Abstract: Unterscheidungen und Kategorienbildung sind ein konstitutives Element von Gesellschaft: Nach innen differenzieren Gesellschaften ihre Mitglieder in bestimmte Gruppen (und Untergruppen), nach außen grenzen sie sich von anderen Gesellschaften ab. Solche gesellschaftlichen Unterscheidungen werden jedoch niemals isoliert wirksam. Soziale Kategorien wie Geschlecht, Ethnizität, sozialer Status oder das Alter einer Person sind ineinander verschränkt bzw. überkreuzen sich – und können daher auch gar nicht ohne ihre Wechselwirkungen untersucht werden. Diese Perspektive, die als »Intersektionsanalyse« inzwischen als sozialwissenschaftliches Paradigma gilt, wird in dem Band erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive auf die Frühe Neuzeit übertragen. Dem Programm einer »Historischen Intersektionsanalyse« folgend, fragen die dabei versammelten Fallstudien sowohl nach der Epochenspezifik sozialer Ungleichheiten als auch nach dem Wandel von Kategorien und deren Verschränkung. / »Entangled Differences« -- Social categories such as gender, ethnicity, status, and age do not exist in isolation, but rather are always interconnected. To analyze these categories and the relationships between them the concept of intersectionality has been developed in the social sciences. The present volume seeks to apply this approach to Early Modern history. From a comparative perspective the case studies collected here examine historically specific inequalities as well as changes within categories and their intersections.

    Abstract: On account of its remarkable reach as well as its variety of schemes and features, migration in the Victorian era is a paramount chapter of the history of worldwide migrations and diasporas. Indeed, Victorian Britain was both a land of emigration and immigration. International Migrations in the Victorian Era covers a wide range of case studies to unveil the complexity of transnational circulations and connections in the 19th century. Combining micro- and macro-studies, this volume looks into the history of the British Empire, 19th century international migration networks, as well as the causes and consequences of Victorian migrations and how technological, social, political, and cultural transformations, mainly initiated by the Industrial Revolution, considerably impacted on people’s movements.     Abstract: "The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" under National Socialism describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called "Judenforschung" (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting "Jewish problem". Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution"--

    Abstract: "Richard Kaeuper's career has examined three salient concerns of medieval society - knightly prowess and violence, lay and religious piety, and public order and government - most directly in three of his monographs: War, Justice, and Public Order (Oxford, 1988), Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe (Oxford, 1999), and Holy Warriors (Penn, 2009). Kaeuper approaches historical questions with an eye towards illuminating the inherent complexities in human ideas and ideals, and he has worked to untangle the various threads holding together cultural constructs such as chivalry, licit violence, and lay piety.     Abstract: "In Rituals and Symbolic Communication in Medieval Hungary under the Árpád Dynasty (1000-1301) Dusan Zupka examines rituals as means of political and symbolic communication in medieval Central Europe, with a special emphasis on the rulers of Árpád dynasty in the Kingdom of Hungary. Particular attention is paid to symbolic acts such as festive coronations, liturgical praises, welcoming of rulers (adventus regis), ritualised settlement of disputes, and symbolic rites during meetings of rulers. The power and meaning of rituals were understandable to both contemporary protagonists and to the authors of sources. These rituals therefore played an essential role in medieval political culture.     Abstract: This collection of essays contains a state of the field discussion about the nature of revolt and resistance in the ancient world. While it does not cover the entire ancient world, it does focus in on the key revolts of the pre-Roman imperial world. Regardless of the exact sequence, it was an undeniable fact that the area we now call the Middle East witnessed a sequence of extensive empires in the second half of the last millennium BCE. At first, these spread from East to West (Assyria, Babylon, Persia). Then after the campaigns of Alexander, the direction of conquest was reversed. Despite the sense of inevitability, or of divinely ordained destiny, that one might get from the passages that speak of a sequence of world-empires, imperial rule was always contested. The essays in this volume consider some of the ways in which imperial rule was resisted and challenged, in the Assyrian, Persian, and Hellenistic (Seleucid and Ptolemaic) empires. Not every uprising considered in this volume would qualify as a revolution by this definition. Revolution indeed was on the far end of a spectrum of social responses to empire building, from resistance to unrest, to grain riots and peasant rebellions. The editors offer the volume as a means of furthering discussions on the nature and the drivers of resistance and revolution, the motivations for them as well as a summary of the events that have left their mark on our historical sources long after the dust had settled

    Abstract: In Struggle by the Pen , Ondřej Klimeš explores the emergence of national consciousness and nationalist ideology of Uyghurs in Xinjiang from c. 1900-1949. Drawing from texts written by modern Uyghur intellectuals, politicians and propagandists throughout this period, he identifies diverse types of Uyghur discourse on the nation and national interest, and traces the emergence and construction of modern Uyghur national identity. The author also demonstrates that the modern Uyghur intelligentsia regarded political emancipation and social modernization as the two most important interests of their nation, and that they envisaged Uyghurs as citizens of a modern republican state founded on the principles of representative government. This book thus presents a new perspective on Uyghur intellectual history and on Republican Xinjiang

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Krisen und Forderungen nach Reform haben die Geschichte der deutschen Rentenversicherung seit ihrer Entstehung vor über einem Jahrhundert stets mitgeprägt. Auch die aktuelle Diskussion bringt wieder Vorschläge ins Spiel, die schon eine alte Tradition haben: So wurde die Rentenversicherung ursprünglich durchaus als ein kapitalgedecktes System begründet und erst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg endgültig auf eine Umlagefinanzierung umgestellt, die heute wieder in Frage gestellt wird. Die Autoren des vorliegenden Sammelbandes stellen wichtige Wegmarken in Geschichte und Gegenwart der Altersversicherung vor, von den Debatten des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, die die Gründung einer "Invaliditäts- und Altersversicherung" vor allem für die Industriearbeiter begleitet haben, bis zu den gegenwärtigen Reformdiskussionen. Sie bieten dazu international und systemisch vergleichende Beiträge, Längsschnitte durch die Geschichte dieser zentralen Institution des modernen Sozialstaats, die sich auf bestimmte Grundsatzprobleme konzentrieren, und Schlaglichter auf die administrative Praxis. Die Autoren rekonstruieren schließlich nicht nur die tatsächliche Entstehungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte der deutschen Rentenversicherung, sondern öffnen darüber hinaus den Blick auch auf alternative Wege, die zwar diskutiert, aber nicht eingeschlagen wurden. Die Verfasser geben die Ergebnisse einer interdisziplinär angelegten wissenschaftlichen Tagung am Forschungsinstitut für öffentliche Verwaltung bei der Deutschen Hochschule für Verwaltungswissenschaften Speyer wieder. Eine ausführliche Einleitung der Herausgeber und Einführungen in die jeweiligen Sektionen erleichtern die Orientierung innerhalb des Bandes.
