Abstract: Networks of today are going through a rapid evolution and there are many emerging areas of information networking and their applications. Heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence and actuations are emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enable novel, low-cost and high-volume applications. Several of such applications have been difficult to realize because of many interconnection problems. To fulfill their large range of applications different kinds of networks need to collaborate and wired and next generation wireless systems should be integrated in order to develop high performance computing solutions to problems arising from the complexities of these networks. This volume covers the theory, design and applications of computer networks, distributed computing and information systems. The aim of the volume “Advanced Information Networking and Applications” is to provide latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to the emerging areas of information networking and applications.

Abstract: Review of the Two Existing Artificial Neural Network Models – Multilayer Perceptron and Probabilistic Neural Networks -- Beyond the Original PNN Model – Kernel Memory for Modeling Various Neural Pattern Processing Mechanism -- Modules within the Artificial Mind System and Their Interactions Relevant to Language Pattern Processing -- Concept Formation.
Abstract: This book proposes a novel connectionist approach to a challenging topic of language modeling within the context of kernel memory and artificial mind system, both proposed previously by the author in the very first volume of the series, Artificial Mind System—Kernel Memory Approach: Studies in Computational Intelligence, Vol. 1. The present volume focuses on how syntactic structures of language are modeled in terms of the respective composite connectionist architectures, each embracing both the nonsymbolic and symbolic parts. These two parts are developed via inter-module processes within the artificial mind system and eventually integrated under a unified framework of kernel memory. The data representation by the networks embodied within the kernel memory principle is essentially local, unlike conventional artificial neural network models such as the pervasive multilayer perceptron-based neural networks. With this locality principle, kernel memory inherently bears many attractive features, such as topologically unconstrained network formation, straightforward network growing, shrinking, and reconfiguration, no requirement of arduous iterative parameter tuning, construction of transparent and hierarchical data structures, and multimodal and temporal data processing via the network representation. Exploiting these multifacet properties of kernel memory with interweaving the notion of inter-module processing within the artificial mind system provides coherent accounts for concept formation and how various linguistic phenomena, viz. word compoundings, morphologies, and multiword constructions, are modeled. The description is then extended to more intricate network models of context-dependent lexical network and syntactic-oriented processing, the latter being the central theme of the present study, and further to those representing a hybrid of nonverbal and verbal thinking, and semantic and pragmatic aspects of sentential meaning. The book is intended for general readers engaging in various areas of study in cognitive science, computer science, engineering, linguistics, philosophy, psycholinguistics, and psychology.

Abstract: This book focuses on Robert Rosen’s contributions to relational system theory, which is the science of organization and function. This science was originally developed by Nicolas Rashevsky, and further developed by Rashevsky’s student Robert Rosen, and continues to be developed by Rosen’s student A. H. Louie amongst others. Due to its revolutionary character, it is often misunderstood, and to some, controversial. The formal and conceptual setting for Rosen’s relational system theory is category theory. Rosen was the first to apply category theory to scientific problems, outside of pure mathematics, and the first to think about science from the point of view of category theory. To better understand the work of Rosen, this book provides an overview of his theory of modeling, complexity, anticipation, and organism. It presents the foundations of this science and the philosophical motivations behind it along with conceptual clarification and historical context in order to present Rosen’s ideas to a wider audience.

Abstract: The book explores Islamic perspectives on conflict resolution and peacemaking, catering to both scholars and general readers interested in understanding the role of Islam in promoting harmony and resolving disputes. It delves into key topics such as the principles of Islamic conflict resolution, historical examples of peaceful resolutions, and contemporary challenges faced by Muslim societies. By addressing these topics, the book aims to provide insight into Islamic teachings and practices that can contribute to building bridges and fostering peace in diverse contexts. The book is important and relevant due to the increasing need for understanding and promoting peaceful resolutions in today's world, particularly in regions influenced by Islam. It offers a comprehensive examination of the principles and methods of conflict resolution within an Islamic framework, shedding light on the rich history of peacemaking within Muslim societies. By highlighting Islamic perspectives on peace, the book aims to bridge cultural divides and foster dialogue, promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of the contributions Islam can make to conflict resolution. The book seeks to address the prevalent misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding Islam's approach to conflict resolution. It aims to challenge the notion that Islam is inherently associated with violence or lack of peaceful solutions. By presenting authentic Islamic teachings and historical examples of peaceful resolutions, the book endeavours to contribute to a more nuanced and accurate understanding of Islam's role in promoting conflict resolution and peacemaking. It offers readers an opportunity to explore Islamic perspectives on resolving conflicts, encouraging dialogue, and cultivating a more peaceful world. H. Sadik Kirazli holds a PhD in Islamic Studies from the University of Melbourne, Australia. His research spans broadly Islamic politics and conflict resolution, Muslim societies, and the issues related to Muslims in other socio-political contexts. both in thought and practice.

Abstract: There has been a steady stream of articles written on the relations between political thought and the interpretation of literature, but there remains a need for a book that both introduces and significantly contributes to the field – particularly one that shows in detail how we can think more freely and creatively about political possibilities by reading and reflecting on politically significant literature. This volume offers analytically acute and culturally rich ways of understanding how it is that we can productively think philosophically about political literature and what kind of distinctive conceptual progress we can make by doing so. Given the extremely widespread interest in political issues, this volume will strike resonant chords far and wide, while offering something that has not been done quite in this way and for which the time certainly seems right. Garry L. Hagberg is the James H. Ottaway Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at Bard College, USA and Editor of the journal Philosophy and Literature. Author of four books and editor of nine volumes, he is presently completing a new book, Consciousness Portrayed: Seven Case Studies in Philosophical Literature.

Abstract: This book is a comprehensive study of the history of pew-renting in the church of England, from the first known rented sittings in the fifteenth century to the system’s collapse in the twentieth. The book’s significance is partly its originality; no book and very few articles or portions of books have appeared solely on pew-renting since the nineteenth century, and even those of that time were not histories – they were polemical works that generally attacked pew-renting on religious grounds. This work encompasses the distinction between formal letting of seats – which involved the methodical letting of sittings by church authorities with set rents – and informal pew-letting, in which congregants tipped pew-openers and sidesmen for favourable seats for one service. It also details the concomitant difficulties and hindrances encountered by churches and renters, the means of setting the rents and collecting the proceeds, the types of congregants who rented pews, the controversy the practice provoked, and the deception and bending – and sometimes outright breaking – of the applicable law. Abstract: Stephen Glynn has produced a terrific book on British TV sitcom spinoff films. He writes clearly and concisely and with a demonstrable passion for the subject. He pulls off the difficult trick of bringing an impressive breadth of knowledge to this material while also communicating it in helpful and often amusing ways. -Paul Newland, University of Worcester This book constitutes the first full volume dedicated to an academic analysis of theatrically-released spinoff films derived from British radio and television sitcoms. Regularly maligned as the nadir of British film production and marginalised as a last resort for the financially-bereft industry during the 1970s, this study demonstrates that the sitcom spinoff film has instead been a persistent and important presence in British cinema from the 1940s to the present day, and includes works with distinct artistic merit. Alongside an investigation of the economic imperative underpinning these productions, i.e. the exploitation of a proven product with a ready-made audience, it is argued that, with a longevity stretching from Arthur Askey and his wartime Band Waggon (1940) to the crew of Kurupt FM and their recent People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021), the British sitcom spinoff can be interpreted as following a full generic ‘life cycle’. Starting with the ‘formative’ stage where works from Hi Gang! (1941) to I Only Arsked! (1958) establish the genre’s characteristics, the spinoff genre moves to its ‘classic’ stage where, secure for form and content, it enjoys considerable popular success with films like Till Death Us Do Part (1969), On the Buses (1971), The Likely Lads (1976) and Rising Damp (1980); the genre’s revival since the late-1990s reveals a more ‘parodic’ final stage, with films like The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse (2005) adopting a consciously self-reflective mode. It is also posited that the sitcom spinoff film is a viable source for social history, with the often-stereotypical re-presentations of characters and events an ideological metonym for the concerns of wider British society, notably in issues of class, race, gender and sexuality. Stephen Glynn lectures in Film and Television at De Montfort University, UK. He has published widely on British cinema and genre and previous volumes for Palgrave include The British Pop Music Film (2013), The British School Film (2016) and The British Football Film (2018).

Abstract: This open-access book explores the security dynamics amid the polarization, shifting borders, and liquid governance that define the Zeitenwende era in Europe's eastern neighbourhood and Central Asia. Presenting various case studies, the volume unveils the intricate web of border dynamics and practices, including the nuanced interplay of border disputes within the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) member states. The contributions shed new light on how contested borders and liquid modes of governance have impacted the engagement of international organizations such as the European Union (EU), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and OSCE in security crises and conflict prevention. Delving deeper, a special part dissects the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and examines European and international responses. By analyzing the stances of diverse European countries, their neighborhood, and international organizations, this section uncovers commonalities and disparities in their approaches to the Ukrainian crisis.

Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Fundamentals -- 3. Transparency Enhancement in Teleoperation -- 4. Multi-Agent Adaptive Shared Control -- 5. Stable and Transparent Shared Control Framework.
Abstract: Robotic research and developments in computing technologies including artificial intelligence have led to significant improvements in autonomous capabilities of robots. Yet, human supervision is advisable and, in many cases, necessary when robots interact with real-world, outside-lab environments. This is due to the fact that complete autonomy in robots has not yet been achieved. When robots encounter challenges beyond their capabilities, a viable solution is to include human operators in the loop, who can support robots through teleoperation, taking complete control or shared control. This monograph focuses on a special form of shared control, namely mixed-initiative, where the final command to the robot is a weighted sum of the commands from the operator and the autonomous controller. The weights (fixed or adaptive), called authority allocation (AA) factors, decide who has more control authority over the robot. Several research groups use different methods to adapt the AA factors online and the benefits of adaptive mixed-initiative shared control have been well established in terms of task completion success and operator usability. However, stability of the overall shared control framework, with communication time-delays between the operator and the robot, is a field that has not been examined extensively. This monograph presents methods to improve performance and stability in shared control so that the possibilities of its applications can be widened. Firstly, methods to improve the haptic feedback performance of teleoperation are developed. Secondly, methods to stabilize adaptive shared control systems, while still ensuring high teleoperation performance, are proposed. The methods are validated on multiple robotic systems and they were applied in several projects, both in space and terrestrial domains. With the aforementioned contributions, this monograph provides an overarching framework to improve synergy between humans and robots. The flexibility of the framework allows integration of existent teleoperation and shared control approaches, which further promotes synergy within the robotics community.

Abstract: This book offers a novel perspective on consultation with indigenous peoples in projects of natural resource exploitation. Engaging with current debates in international law, the study introduces a multi-dimensional perspective on consultation understood to include self-determination and cultural rights. It analyzes evidence from several countries across the Americas and Africa and presents an original and in-depth case study of Brazil. The book assesses judicial and legislative cases, drawing on relevant literature, international treaties and supplementary information gained from expert interviews. This supports the work’s broader objective to explore legal facts as well as to evaluate the empirical evidence in light of theoretical considerations. It thereby expands the understanding of consultation as a right under national legal systems and considers practical ways on how to enforce domestic redress for avoiding legal indeterminacy. The conclusions of the analysis contribute to not only a better understanding of the subject matter but also showcase ways of how to improve the realities on the ground. The book puts forward a range of recommendations directed at national authorities, international organizations, development lenders and civil society to help improve the unsatisfactory present circumstances. The intended audience encompasses legal scholars, students, practitioners and journalists, as well as anyone interested in research on the realization of indigenous peoples’ rights and the role of international law in the 21st century. .

Abstract: This book presents many valuable tips for making decisions related to road traffic in transport networks. The knowledge base in practical examples, as well as the decision support systems described in this volume, finds interest among people who face the daily challenge of searching for advanced solutions and practical applications in road traffic engineering. The publication is therefore addressed to local authorities related to the planning and development of development strategies for selected areas with regard to transport (both in the urban and regional dimension) and to representatives of business and industry, as people directly involved in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The tips contained in individual sections of the publication allow to look at a given problem in an advanced way and facilitate the selection of the appropriate strategy (among others, in relation to the heuristic approach to assessing the performance efficiency of road intersections in urban environments from the resilience perspective, modeling the distribution of transport pollutants in a naturally ventilated road tunnel, development of a camera-based parking monitoring system with an automatic parking spot identification). In turn, due to a new approach to theoretical models (including, inter alia, problems with the safety of passengers at tram stops or energy-efficient radio platforms for the implementation of nodes of sensor networks), the publication also interests scientists and researchers carrying out research in this area. The publication entitled "Road Traffic Analysis, Theoretical Approaches and Practical Solutions" contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 19th “Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” Scientific and Technical Conference organized by the Department of Transport Systems, Traffic Engineering and Logistics at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology. The conference took place on September 18–19, 2023, in Katowice (Poland).

Abstract: “This important book offers a new theory and policy-related insights with respect to the Iran nuclear deal. It is the first study to see the nuclear deal as a means toward confidence-building between longstanding enemies. Iranian proliferation activities prior to the deal emerged as a result of simultaneous protracted conflicts with the US, Israel and Iraq. The volume offers a unique comparative analysis of Iranian nuclear policy over time and will be of great interest to academics and foreign policy practitioners alike.” - Patrick James, Dean’s Professor of International Relations, University of Southern California This in-depth study perceptively illuminates how the Iranian nuclear deal unraveled after the Trump administration withdrew, and with what consequences. The case reveals how relations between rival states can be improved through the positive spill-over effects of cooperative arrangements, but also how rapid and comprehensive spill-back can result from their unravelling. With her compelling analysis Khan persuasively demonstrates the importance of a renewed agreement with Iran backed by the United States.” - Annette Freyberg-Inan, Professor of International Relations Theory, University of Amsterdam This book introduces a novel theory surrounding the spillback effects stemming from the fracture of cooperative arrangements, exemplified by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and rigorously examines its applicability through an in-depth analysis of the Iranian context. The book draws connections between the JCPOA and the broader landscape of conflict resolution and contends that cooperation can manifest between protracted conflict states, and once established through trust and confidence-building measures, can lead to spill-over effects into other domains. This comprehensive study undertakes a unique comparative analysis, scrutinizing Iran's proclivity towards proliferation before the JCPOA, the period of subdued proliferation during the deal's existence, and the subsequent surge in proliferation activities following US withdrawal. This book marks essential reading for researchers interested in Iranian politics, Middle Eastern politics, nuclear proliferation, US foreign policy, and international relations theory. Abstract: "Whether or not you accept the conventional wisdom that computational intelligence and human intelligence are essentially the same, I recommend that you ponder Jeffrey Kane's timely and persuasive book. " —Howard Gardner, Hobbs Research Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education “In this breathtaking journey through both the works of classic and contemporary philosophers and scientists, Kane sometimes offers agreements but also compelling challenges, leaving the reader filled with the excitement of the mission. While so much has been learned, there is so much more to be understood. Kane illuminates that the journey to understanding how the brain gets mental has just begun.” —Mike Gazzaniga, Director of the SAGE Center for the Study of Mind, University of California, Santa Barbara While it may appear that generative AI has mastered the mystery of the human mind and released its full power, The Emergence of Mind: Where Technology Ends and We Begin demonstrates the profound and fundamental limitations of the technology and its use as a model of human thinking. In response, the book offers an emergent model of the human mind rooted in our experiences as living, sentient, social and conscious beings. The text explores the nature of meaning in human cognition and the critical importance of the experience of ideas. In so doing, it offers insights into the cultivation of specific generative capacities of the human mind. Jeffrey Kane, is a professor of Philosophy and Education at Long Island University. Abstract: This book explores the relationship between federalism, social divides and conflict in African countries. It details the origins, design and performance of major federal and quasi-federal states to assess their performance and propose new methods for managing these divides. Drawing on evidence from countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, the book examines the nature and causes of ethnonationalism, mobilisation and confrontation with the nation state. The book is a comprehensive treatment of the five major federal and devolved systems in Africa. It explains their origin, design and operation, and assesses their performance. More importantly, the book explains the distinct nature of federal and devolved systems in the Global South. Federal and devolved systems in Africa cannot be understood in isolation from the nature of state power on the continent. The book explains the impact of unregulated state power on the dynamics of federal and devolved systems in Africa. Federalism and devolution have not failed but have been betrayed – both in the past and the present – in serving as a venue for accommodation, intergovernmental bargaining and negotiated reform. Assefa Fiseha is Professor of Law and Governance at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.

Abstract: Chapter 1. Introduction -- Chapter 2. Albanian Sex Trafficking in Context -- Chapter 3. Methodology -- Chapter 4. Case Study/Regional Analysis -- Chapter 5. Findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Abstract: This volume considers the most appropriate criminal jurisdiction to prosecute aggravated sex trafficking of the kind associated with northern Albanian crime groups. Watershed jurisprudence from the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal could prove pivotal to achieving the legislative changes for prosecuting Albanian sex trafficking in peacetime that this book advocates. This book revisits this relevant history to challenge the current transnational status of trafficking as a mischaracterisation. It is maintained that the Albanian sex trafficker has become, like the wartime rapist before him, the perpetrator of an offence that warrants recognition by the international criminal justice regime. The book considers the historico-cultural legacies of present-day root-causes of Albanian sex trafficking to understand how the same dehumanising ideology and sexual violence aimed at women during the Yugoslav Wars persisted post-conflict and continues to underscore contemporary Albanian sex trafficking and what these similarities in assailant attitudes and actions might mean for potentially prosecuting human trafficking within the international criminal justice system. Through the prism of neutralisation theory rooted in forensic cultural anthropology, in the form of a novel hypothetical model, a conceptual framework to consider the true nature of trafficking is offered. The model offers a précised interpretation of the key factors that establish certain criminal conduct as suitable for international criminal justice and how those factors relate to Albanian sex trafficking. The model distils the characteristics of Albanian sex trafficking; it extracts the essential elements and most important aspects of this type of criminality so we can recognise their presence in real-world cases. A case study featuring interviews with the traffickers themselves and individuals who have encountered them firsthand then describes how the model holds for the real-world experience of Albanian sex trafficking. Approached from the trafficker angle, the purpose of the case study is to support the theoretical model by showing how each element manifests in Albanian sex trafficking. For a richer understanding, each of the elements is explained and explored within a historico-cultural context. The chapters in this book feature key topics and supporting material, including: The backstory, purpose, and structure of the international criminal justice system followed by how the regime could and should be extended to encompass aggravated sex trafficking. The role of culturally-shaped neutralization theory in understanding decision-making in sex trafficking on the individual level Historico-cultural context, including competing elements of tradition and modernity Longstanding gender attitudes, particularly evaluating violence against women Interviews with Albanian sex traffickers and victims By evaluating Albanian sex trafficking through this lens, this book aims to identify international criminal justice as a more appropriate and effective approach to prosecuting aggravated sex trafficking and to suggest future opportunities for further research that can aid in improved policing and prisoner management as it relates to Albanian sex trafficking. This book is ideal for students and academic researchers interested in international criminal justice and sex trafficking studies.

Abstract: This open access book is a superb collection of some fifteen chapters inspired by Schroeder-Heister's groundbreaking work, written by leading experts in the field, plus an extensive autobiography and comments on the various contributions by Schroeder-Heister himself. For several decades, Peter Schroeder-Heister has been a central figure in proof-theoretic semantics, a field of study situated at the interface of logic, theoretical computer science, natural-language semantics, and the philosophy of language. The chapters of which this book is composed discuss the subject from a rich variety of angles, including the history of logic, the proper interpretation of logical validity, natural deduction rules, the notions of harmony and of synonymy, the structure of proofs, the logical status of equality, intentional phenomena, and the proof theory of second-order arithmetic. All chapters relate directly to questions that have driven Schroeder-Heister's own research agenda and to which he has made seminal contributions. The extensive autobiographical chapter not only provides a fascinating overview of Schroeder-Heister's career and the evolution of his academic interests but also constitutes a contribution to the recent history of logic in its own right, painting an intriguing picture of the philosophical, logical, and mathematical institutional landscape in Germany and elsewhere since the early 1970s. The papers collected in this book are illuminatingly put into a unified perspective by Schroeder-Heister's comments at the end of the book. Both graduate students and established researchers in the field will find this book an excellent resource for future work in proof-theoretic semantics and related areas.

Abstract: This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of the fiction of Constance Antonina (Nina) Boyle: a suffragette described in one obituary as 'second only to Mrs Pankhurst'. Boyle was a well-known campaigner and was the first woman to stand for selection as a candidate in an election in the UK. However, her novels have been all but forgotten. This study explores Boyle's early fiction and focuses on her first five novels - each of which represents a retelling of established narratives. It explores how Boyle used her fiction to voice her radical gender politics within a culture that was becoming increasingly hostile to even discussing women's rights outside of the extension of the franchise. This book will be of interest to scholars of women's suffrage as well as anyone interested in popular fiction of the 1920s. Nicola Allen is Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Co-Course Leader for MA English at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. She is author of Marginality in the Contemporary British Novel (2008).

Abstract: The Brief explores the relationship between industrial dynamics, business strategies, and environmental regulations in the agrochemical industry. Focusing on contested technologies that continue to be used despite evidence of their hazardous impacts, the book calls for investigating the potential hazards during the inventive phase of companies to anticipate future risks. Combining patent analysis with computational chemistry and toxicology, the author examines the toxicity of chemical inventions and the effectiveness of environmental regulations in curbing harmful products. The result is a comprehensive dataset that combines patent data with chemical structures, which provides valuable insights into firms' innovation strategies as well as their potential hazards. Underscoring the importance of effective regulation in addressing social and environmental challenges, this Brief will be of interest to researchers and practitioners at the intersection of numerous fields, including economic policy, industrial economics, agribusiness, management, life sciences, and sustainability.

Abstract: This book focuses on the construction of hegemonic masculinity as well as its representations in literature, culture, and film. Although white heterosexual masculinity continues to be the dominant model, it remains, paradoxically, largely invisible in gender terms. While the first three chapters thus offer introductory theoretical perspectives on the latest research on white masculinities, the following chapters concentrate on applying masculinity theory to the analysis of both social constructions and cultural (i.e. literary and film) representations of men’s emotions (with a special focus on new fatherhood models), friendships between men, as well as gender-based violence. Abstract: This book puts forward a harmonious analysis of similarities and differences between two concepts—human minds and cultures—and strives for a multicultural spectrum of philosophical explorations that could assist them in pondering the striking pursuit of envisaging human minds and cultures as an essential appraisal of philosophy and the social sciences. The book hinges on a theoretical understanding of the indispensable liaison between the dichotomy of minds and objectivity residing in semantic-ontological conjectures. The ethnographic sense of cultures confines the scope of cultural scientism, an evolutionary paradigm on the functionalist turn, where one could enthral the cultural phenomenon from the contentment of the conflict of scientific quandaries. Hence, cultural relativism concedes that cultures have some descriptive contents, like customs, beliefs, moral codes, other minds, etc., that are followed by an individual or a group of people. However, the notion of societal semiotics embarks on the ‘semiotic conception of culture’ that deploys modernity and values centred on ethical conjectures. Human Minds and Cultures conspicuously attune the cultural edifice of moral minds and cope with the enduring prospects of ethics, genders, laws, and socio-political affairs. Essential reading for anyone with a sparkling interest in human minds and cultures.

Towards a Phenomenology of Racism.
Abstract: This book adapts the Arabic term nafsiyya to trace the phenomenological contours of Edward Said’s analysis of the affective dimensions of colonial and imperial racism. Reflecting on what he called his “colonial education,” Said rendered his Palestinian/Arab background and experience of racism an enabling component of his academic work. The argument focuses on his “personal dimension” section in his introduction to his famous volume Orientalism, discussing key notions of Said’s oeuvre—such as ‘elaboration,’ ‘circumstance,’ ‘humanism,’ ‘worldliness,’ ‘inventory,’ and ‘critical consciousness.’ Providing a lengthy study of his earlier and somewhat neglected Beginnings: Intention and Method, the book discusses the significance of the style of the essay as a key component of what the author calls Said’s interventionist brand of scholarship. The final chapter outlines how Said’s oeuvre can be situated in a genealogy of a radical phenomenology of racism that emerged from the colonies. Norman Saadi Nikro is a research fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient. Having Australian and Lebanese backgrounds, he served as an Australian Volunteer Abroad in Ramallah, and was later an Assistant Professor of Humanities at Notre Dame University in Lebanon, before moving to Berlin. .

Abstract: This open access book addresses the problem of creation and reproduction processes of contemporary urban communities, as well as cultural mechanisms and factors of these processes. Rejecting both the environmental determinism, and cultural reductionism of community studies, the book assumes that the postmodern city is a space of diverse urban communities that go far beyond the traditional concept of neighbourhood as well as personal and imagined communities, and thus proposes to comprehend urban community as social practice embedded in urban space. The book applies the Theory of Social Practice and the Theory of Scenes and develops the concept of socio-cultural opportunity structures in order to explain how cultural practices of individuals and symbolic dimensions of territory interact, leading to (re)production of various forms of urban community. It is assumed that culture in general and symbolic meanings of territory in particular, play a crucial role in the process of (re)production of urban communities, that this process takes place in collective cultural consciousness and is mediated by territorially embedded cultural practices of individuals. The book overcomes theoretical gaps in classical community studies and develops a new perspective on urban communal processes based on the analysis of social practices in urban cultural scenes. Marta Klekotko, PhD is sociologist, researcher, university teacher as well as practitioner dedicated to community empowerment and urban development. Her interests cover community studies, urban studies and development studies. She is particularly interested in cultural mechanisms of community empowerment, social cohesion and development - both in theory as well as in practice. In her work, she always takes cultural perspective, fosters theoretical eclectism, and triangulates research methods. She was visiting scholar, among others, at the University of Chicago, State University of New York in Buffalo, and University of Barcelona. She is the president of the Research Committee on Community Research (RC03) of the International Sociological Association.

    Abstract: 1 Introduction -- 2 The Manuscript Sources -- 3 Texts and Intellectual Interests -- 4 Scribes, Patrons and Readers -- 5 Locations of Manuscript Production -- 6 Conclusion -- 7 Appendices.
Abstract: “This important study of Mevlevi manuscripts is an outstanding piece of scholarship, based on a close examination of numerous often neglected manuscript sources. It sheds new light not just on the manuscripts themselves, but also the early Mevlevi community – its artists, artisans, and patrons, and their intellectual interests. It makes a significant contribution both to art historical scholarship and to the growing field of Islamic manuscript studies, and will be required reading for anyone interested in medieval Anatolia or Sufism.” —Professor A. C. S. Peacock, University of St Andrews, UK This book provides a detailed and carefully researched catalogue of over 140 manuscripts related to the Mevlevi Sufis in their formative period during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It also offers an in-depth and rigorous analysis of the manuscript material, which reveals much about the role of manuscripts in early Mevlevi life, the identity of disciples who were scribes and manuscript owners, and the geographical spread of the Sufi group. The Mevlevi Sufis were one of the most important and prominent socio-religious groups to emerge in late medieval Anatolia, following the Mongol conquests of the 1240s. Sometimes known colloquially as the ‘whirling dervishes,’ the Mevlevis became particularly powerful under Ottoman rule in the early modern period, even counting some sultans as their disciples. However, there is still much to learn about their earliest days, following the death of their ‘patron saint’ Jalal al-Din Rumi in 1273. Rumi is of course also notable as the author of the Masnavi, an extensive work of Sufi poetry written in rhyming couplets that is the core of Mevlevi ritual and learning. Beyond Mevlevi circles, Rumi remains very popular today as a ‘mystic’ poet. This study sheds new light on the intellectual culture of his time. Cailah Jackson is a Research Associate of the Khalili Research Centre, University of Oxford and former Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

Abstract: The book analyzes socioeconomic through the lens of a lawyer. In the past decade the world has witnessed some severe financial and economic crises, especially the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The author states that the socio-economic order has in the past four to five decades been thoroughly redesigned, generally favouring models that prioritize the free market over the public interest or even, more generally, government operation. He works out that during four to five decades, globalized, capitalist societies are facing a multiplicity of fundamental problems, such as: (1) increasing debt that severely burdens both the private and public sectors; (2) persistent poverty and an ever-increasing polarization between rich and poor, in addition to (3) intractable environmental problems that, fifty years after the Club of Rome's report entitled ‘Limits to growth’ (1972), has dragged the world into what in recent years has been referred to as "climate change." The book explains why all this is the direct result of value choices made from the late Middle Ages onwards, when in the Western world the societal models of that time were increasingly abandoned for a societal model that came to rely on the primacy of economic interests. The book not only subjects the ethical choices but also examines various problems it has caused and probes for possible ways out. This is an open access book.

Abstract: This open access book provides a historical treatment of scientific control in experimentation in the longue durée. The introduction distinguishes four related strands in the history of experimental control: the development of practices to stabilize experimental conditions; the career of the comparative design; the unfolding of methodological discussions about control practices and designs; and the history of the term “control”. Each chapter brings these distinctions to bear on specific historical episodes. The focus is on experiments with complex, elusive phenomena such as perception and learning, irregular movements, and unobservable elements. Such experiments bring control issues to the fore because they are difficult to design and stabilize and often controversial. Together, the chapters show that the local context shapes what exactly is controlled, how control can be accomplished, and how controls are justified. They also show that control strategies and methodological ideas often remain stable for a long time and change only gradually. This book, as well as the volume on analysis and synthesis in experimentation by the same editors, contains contributions by an array of experts from multiple disciplines, making it suitable for historians and philosophers of science and students alike.

Abstract: “This is one of the most important books on Israel and Palestine to appear in some time” —Alan Dowty, University of Notre Dame, Past President, Association for Israel Studies, author of Israel/Palestine “One of the leading figures in the field of Israel Studies, Ilan Troen demonstrates the vast range of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic theological claims and their impact on our supposedly secular political debates. Sensitive to both religious and political interests, Troen brings a new depth of understanding to the conflict.” —Susannah Heschel, Eli M. Black Distinguished Professor, Dartmouth College “An important, accessible, and much needed contribution toward understanding the many entangled factors that make the conflicts in the Middle East so intractable.” —Philip A. Cunningham, Professor of Theology, President of the International Council of Christians and Jews, Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia The struggle over Israel/Palestine is not just another contest by competing nationalisms or an instance of geopolitical competition. It is also about control of sacred territory that involves local Jews, Muslims, and Christians as well as worldwide faith communities, each with their own interests and stake in what transpires. This balanced introduction to a complex subject presents the multiple positions within the great monotheistic traditions. It demonstrates that the secular discourses in the public square concerning ownership privileges, historical precedence, political rights, and justice that have allegedly replaced religious claims actually coexist with, and often complement, the theological. It explores the century-long tangle of secular and theological debates about Israel’s legitimacy. Whether readers support a Jewish state or are resolutely opposed, the serious and substantial scholarship of this well-reasoned and innovative book will contribute to a nuanced and better-informed understanding of this persistent issue that has entered its second century on the international agenda. Abstract: Reflecting the growing interest of historians in memory studies, this edited collection examines the relationship between memory and global social movements from 1848 to the present. For a long time, there has been little attempt by historians to consider memory and social activism in an integrated, systematic, and comparative way. However, in recent years, scholars have demonstrated that social movements rely on collective memories to assert claims, mobilize supporters, and legitimize their political visions, while also helping to further shape collective memories. This book delves into the synergies between memory studies and social movements, exploring how social movements have been constructing and creating memories of their own activity, how specific landscapes of memory have influenced social movements, and how activists have used memory as a cultural resource to further their own goals and ambitions. The case studies presented cover a range of different types of political activism, including the fights for workers’, gay, feminist, and pacifist rights, as well as ecological, urban, and far-right movements across the globe, portraying the diverse interrelations that exist between social movements and collective memory. Abstract: This book shows how inflation can disrupt politics and society. With no recent precedent, mild inflation spurred mass protests, myriad remedial schemes, and partisan political reversals between 1910 and 1914. Then wartime demand and inflationary fiscal policy doubled consumer prices from 1915 to 1920, triggering waves of strikes, food riots by immigrant housewives, class conflict, and elite fears of revolution. Middle-class households resented falling real incomes. Even more than today, food prices dominated consumer concerns. Yet farmers wanted high commodity prices. Accordingly, both sides blamed and attacked meatpackers, wholesalers, and retailers. Then as now, inflation hurt whichever party held the White House. Fumbling responses by Wilson’s administration and the Federal Reserve led to hesitant price controls, punitive raids and prosecutions, and a now-familiar fallback—high interest rates in 1920 and subsequent recession. An epilogue traces continuing popular and political responses to changes in the consumer price index down to 2020. David I. Future development and directions for sustainability reporting.
Abstract: The book provides a comprehensive exploration of the the evolution in sustainability reporting and non-financial disclosure from three perspectives: regulatory, literary, and empirical. First, the book discusses the variety of frameworks and standards, normative sources, and regulatory initiatives aimed at promoting and standardizing sustainability reporting at the international level. Second, the book offers a systematic review of academic literature on sustainability reporting and non-financial disclosure. Third, the book examines the concept of materiality in sustainability reporting and provides an empirical analysis of the quantity and quality of materiality disclosures in sustainability reporting across the globe. The book concludes by discussing future directions for developments in sustainability reporting research and practice, and is relevant to academics, practitioners, and students interested in the intersection of sustainability, corporate reporting, and corporate finance. Abstract: This book considers the relationship between sound and silence in the works of Joseph Conrad, along with their ties to Western and non-Western space. Throughout Conrad’s works, a pattern emerges where Western space is associated with sound and non-Western space is associated with silence; similarly, Western space is portrayed as full of objects and activity, whereas non-Western space is portrayed as empty. As these tales progress, though, Conrad’s characters embark on transformational journeys that cause them to reassess the world they live in and sometimes even the nature of the universe. These journeys invariably occur through encountering non-Western space, and during the course of these journeys, the dichotomy between Western space, perceived as replete with sound and activity, and non-Western space, empty of such, blurs such that the fullness of the West is revealed to be simply a surface hiding the emptiness beneath. In the end, both Western and non-Western space are revealed to be absences, as the absence of sound becomes a correlative for the emptiness of space and the emptiness of space becomes a metonym for the cosmological emptiness of nothingness. John G. Peters is University Distinguished Research Professor at the University of North Texas, USA. His books include Joseph Conrad's Critical Reception, The Cambridge Introduction to Joseph Conrad, Conrad and Impressionism, Historical Guide to Joseph Conrad, Conrad's Drama, Joseph Conrad: Contemporary Reviews (volume 2), and the Norton critical edition of Conrad's The Secret Sharer and Other Stories.

Abstract: This book offers a fresh perspective on the Habitats Directive's rules on designating Natura 2000 - the European biodiversity conservation network. Although the Habitats Directive came into force in the early 1990s, the network is not yet optimally set up and lacks coherence and connectivity. The author examines the Habitats Directive’s provisions regarding the designation of Natura 2000 and discusses possible reasons for the EU Member States’ ongoing lack of compliance with their designation duties. She reassesses the 2015 REFIT Fitness Check of the Nature Directives to look for the Member States’ reasons for not having optimally complied with their designation duties yet. She then analyses the Habitats Directive to reveal elements of non-optimal drafting in its designation provisions. Sensible law reforms that do not interfere with the general framework of the Habitats Directive and which keep in mind the relevant national, regional, and international biodiversity law and policy, as well as the relevant case law will be discussed to this end. As a result, this book presents an enhanced legal designation framework that can support Member States’ compliance with their designation obligations. The book finally goes beyond the European biodiversity legislation, also shedding light on the effects of the suggested reforms for the broader biodiversity and environmental law and policy landscape, and concludes that reforming the Habitats Directive would benefit a variety of contemporary areas of law. This book targets academics and policy-makers in the field as it provides a scholarly as well as a hands-on approach to the subject of strengthening European biodiversity law.

Abstract: This book uses the early twentieth century surveillance reports of urban vice reformers in New York, Chicago, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as well as the US vice report for the League of Nations’ Special Body on Trafficking in Women and Children (from 1927) and French police memoirs, treatises, and histories of vice enforcement in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century Paris to highlight the way in which American reliance on undercover tactics drove American vice enforcement policy, leading to a clash with French vice enforcement policy before the League of Nations. Both the failure of that early effort to exert international influence on vice enforcement and the American embrace of undercover tactics would set the stage for the later American efforts to promote a global war on drugs. Before the League of Nations, in particular, the American delegation’s notable lack of success in mobilizing European crackdowns on prostitution created a blueprint for how not to project American influence overseas, once American advocates of narcotics interdiction sought to promote a global war on drugs. Yet private reformers’ reliance on undercover tactics to investigate prostitution modeled the investigative tactics on which American law enforcement would come to depend, and which it would later seek to export, as a primary weapon in the war on drugs.

Abstract: This book offers a broad international analysis of healthcare corruption, drawing upon criminology, sociology, psychology, law, political and behavioural economics and nudge theory. It engages with the existing key debates on how to define healthcare corruption and the measurement of it but builds on this and offers new analysis of these issues in the private healthcare sector too. Furthermore, it moves beyond the analysis of funds lost to healthcare and includes the impact and costs of healthcare corruption on victims and family members of victims and the CJS. It also uniquely considers that the healthcare sector victimizes patients and its own employees, with the healthcare sector as part of a carceral state to help highlight how different disciplines can contribute to our understanding in reducing healthcare corruption. Abstract: This book explores the insurance sector’s potential role, influence, and impact on society in light of new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns. Furthermore, it looks into how financial and technological innovations help reshape insurance regulation and business models. Unlike their predecessors, 21st century insurers have a growing impact on cross-sector service provision by making available to their clients a wealth of expert knowledge and experience in data analytics. The book delves into insurers’ transition from suppliers of products – consisting of risk coverage or investment opportunities – to providers of various services, and ultimately to solution providers by partnering with their clients so as to prevent failure, optimize their clients’ operations and help them excel in their economic sector. Insurance regulations and policies can be affected by various factors, such as changes in the economy, technological advances, and shifting consumer preferences, to name a few. Additionally, the insurance industry can have a significant bearing on the wider economy, making it important for the industry to operate within a framework of comprehensive regulations. This book includes a diverse set of theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented chapters on particular aspects of new trends and wider analyses leading to a more systematic understanding of the industry’s socio-economic role. It offers a mixture of chapters from insurance academics and professionals from different countries, cultures, and scientific backgrounds. The methodologies used are diverse, including legal, sociological, historical, economic and financial as well as interdisciplinary analyses. The book has a global scope, including chapters of a more global nature and others addressing particular jurisdictions on different continents, including Europe, Asia and North America.

Abstract: Affordable housing shortage and social exclusion have become severe socio-political problems across the globe. Increasing numbers of people are suffering from social eviction and displacement due to urban densification, modernization, rising rents, and intense housing commodification. Vulnerable resident groups – such as old-aged or households with children – who often live in older housing stocks planned to be densified or upgraded with higher rents, are being pushed to the margins of the city. A scenario that is highly unsustainable. So far, studies on densification have mainly considered the process as technological, architectural, or design-based problem. However, systematic knowledge on how to implement densification objectives sustainably – regarding economic, environmental, and social aspects – is still lacking. This book tackles this gap by analyzing densification from a governance perspective. Its point of departure is that densification per se does not necessarily lead to sustainable outcomes in terms of social inclusion, cohesion, or community stability. Rather, it politicizes densification by neglecting how the process is planned, implemented, and governed by the actors (e.g., municipal authorities, landowners) involved. The book applies an actors-centered neoinstitutionalist political ecology approach to reveal the specific objectives and strategies of actors involved, as well as the socio-political structures (i.e. rules, laws, and policies) that govern densification. Four Swiss in-depth empirical qualitative case studies (Zürich, Basel, Köniz, and Kloten) illustrate the political and legal conditions for success or failure for (un)sustainable densification implementation. Finally, this book advises stakeholders on more effective, community-oriented, collective, and decommodified forms of governance to respond to the needs of the public at large rather than simply catering to private individuals and firms. Gabriela Debrunner has a PhD in geography with a focus on spatial planning and political urbanism. She works as a postdoc, lecturer, and research associate at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development (IRL) at ETH Zurich. In her research, Gabriela Debrunner deals with the overarching question of how the city as a social space works from an urban governance perspective.

Abstract: In the summer of 1928, Kurt Gödel (1906–1978) embarked on his logical journey that would bring him world fame in a mere three years. By early 1929, he had solved an outstanding problem in logic, namely the question of the completeness of the axioms and rules of quantificational logic. He then went on to extend the result to the axiom system of arithmetic but found, instead of completeness, his famous incompleteness theorem that got published in 1931. It belongs to the most iconic achievements of 20th century science and has been instrumental in the development of theories of formal languages and algorithmic computability – two essential components in the birth of the information society. This book explores Gödel’s way from an exceptional high-school student to a firmly established young logician. Essays in Gödel’s hand from the high school show that his central philosophical and scientific convictions were formed early on, before his university studies. Particular emphasis is laid on the course that made Gödel one of the foremost logicians of all times. The scientific biography of young Gödel is followed by English translations from Gödel’s German Gabelsberger shorthand of all his early preserved notebooks on logic and related topics.

Abstract: ‘A very fine, insightful and original analysis that uses Ronald Reagan's landslide re-election year as the lens through which to explore American politics, society and culture in the 1980s. This very engaging, accessible, and well written volume is highly recommended for students of US History and American Studies.’ — Iwan Morgan, Emeritus professor of US Studies at University College London and author of Reagan: American Icon Forty years after Ronald Reagan’s successful re-election campaign, this book explores the significance of the year 1984 in the making of Reagan’s presidential record and the shaping of his legacy. The authors examine the broader context of how Reagan impacted the nature of the US presidency and international relations during the Cold War, and how this in turn interacted with American popular culture. Serving as an introduction to academics, students and the interested public into what is a rapidly increasingly Reagan scholarship, this book will also appeal to anyone interested in US elections, the evolving nature of the US presidency, and American culture more generally. Abstract: This book focuses on the war in Afghanistan. In 2010 and 2011, the author took a leave from her faculty position at the University of California, Irvine to train and then deploy as a cultural advisor with two U.S. Army combat units in Afghanistan. Her account begins with the U.S. Army’s four-month training program for cultural advisors, follows her deployment, much of it on missions to remote and volatile areas far from brigade headquarters, and concludes with her uneasy return home. She examines the everyday lives of Americans sent to conduct a war of counterinsurgency, including their sexual exploits on base, their superstitions, even the heroic accounts that military contractors recount in their personal stories of past wars, stories that are sometimes a little too good to be true. In turn, she explores the views of ordinary Afghans to this American occupation. Carol Burke is Professor Emerita in English at UC Irvine, and Visiting Scholar in University of North Carolina’s Program in Peace, War and Defense. She combines her ethnographic skills as a folklorist with her interest in literary journalism. Publications include Camp All-American, Hanoi Jane, and the High-and-Tight, a study of military culture; Women’s Visions, a book that explores accounts of the supernatural and the uncanny exchanged by women in prison; The Creative Process (coauthored with Molly Tinsley), a creative writing text; Plain Talk and Back in Those Days, collections of family folklore--the latter coauthored with Martin Light; and Close Quarters, a collection of poems. Articles have appeared in magazines like The Nation and The New Republic as well as scholarly journals and collections. Before joining the faculty at UCI in 2004, Professor Burke taught courses in literary journalism at Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins Universities.

Abstract: This open access book focuses on the energy sector and will make a significant contribution to its continued evolution. For many years, the energy sector has been missing a raison d’etre and now finally there are increased calls for that to be justice. Hence, this book will develop the concept of energy justice and how it needs to be formalised in a new ‘social contract’ with all stakeholders in society. The focus will be on improving legal systems at local, national and international levels while ensuring that justice is a core issue within energy law, the legal system and more broadly in society. Raphael Heffron is Professor in Energy Justice and the Social Contract at the Universite de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour, TREE, Pau, France. He is also Jean Monnet Professor in the Just Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy awarded by the European Commission (2019-2022). In 2020, he was appointed as Senior Counsel at Janson law firm in Brussels (Belgium). Professor Heffron is a qualified Barrister-at-Law, and a graduate of both Oxford (MSc) and Cambridge (MPhil & PhD). His work all has a principal focus on achieving a sustainable and just transition to a low-carbon economy, and combines a mix of law, policy and economics. He has published over 200 publications of different types and is the most cited scholar in his field worldwide for energy law, energy justice and just transition. Louis de Fontenelle is Associate Professor in Public Law at the University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour, Pau, France. He is member of the research centre TREE (University of Pau and Pays de l'Adour, CNRS, France). His research focuses on issues of law and justice relating to the ecological transition in the context of climate change, in particular energy, sustainable mobility and natural resources. His work is interdisciplinary, involving geography, economics and philosophy. .

Abstract: “Proposing a symbiosis between history and speculative fi ction, this wide-ranging collection of essays asks how critical visions of alternative possibility can help us confront the dire legacies of colonialism, the specter of ecological catastrophe, and the burdens of systemic injustice. Historians and literary scholars alike should welcome this intervention.” —John Rieder, Professor Emeritus, University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa “This volume makes a substantial contribution to the scholarship on speculative fi ction by illuminating how the concept of ‘concurrences,’ as articulated and theorized by Gunlög Fur, can serve as a valuable methodological tool in the study of speculative fi ction. Drawing on a wide variety of cultural and historical sources, the essays in this volume offer useful case studies that render the concept of concurrences more comprehensible through concrete application.” —Cyrus R. K. Patell, New York University This open access book demonstrates that despite different epistemological starting points, history and speculative fiction perform similar work in “making the strange familiar” and “making the familiar strange” by taking their readers on journeys through space and time. Excellent history, like excellent speculative fiction, should cause readers to reconsider crucial aspects of their society that they normally overlook or lead them to reflect on radically different forms of social organization. Drawing on Gunlög Fur’s postcolonial concept of concurrences, and with contributions that explore diverse examples of speculative fiction and historical encounters using a variety of disciplinary approaches, this volume provides new perspectives on colonialism, ecological destruction, the nature of humanity, and how to envision a better future. Abstract: This book argues for an approach based on values when trying to make sense of shifts and changes that occurred in French politics during the last four decades. Values play a pivotal role in structuring political views and policy preferences. They influence citizens’ attitudes and behaviors as well as reflect long-lasting political cultures and cleavages. After presenting the data collected within the European values studies, on which the six contributions included in this book build, we explain how these contributions highlight some major French political dynamics by scrutinizing key driving forces such as the individualization process, generational replacement or ideological consistency in economic and cultural beliefs, and by re-assessing how attitudes toward democracy, religiosity and nationalism shape political attitudes. Challenging dominant narratives of value crisis, this book sets up an agenda for future research on French politics through the lens of value change. Abstract: This book deals with the role, development, and legacy of the first Constitution of independent Ireland within the wider context of the establishment of the State. After decades of relative neglect, the 1920s have been receiving increased attention from historians recently thanks to the centenary of the State’s foundation. This book continues this trend of re-examination of this period and looks at key themes, such as the establishment of institutions under the Irish Free State Constitution and the focus on the ideals of popular sovereignty and democracy. It does so from novel and cross-disciplinary perspectives, and it also looks at areas which have received little to no previous attention; from individual aspects like property rights, the Irish language and environmental rights to aspects such as opposition and partition. Abstract: “Lukasiewicz’s book is a deeply researched study of a financial organisation and its intimate links with British imperialism and South Africa’s settler colonialism." —Stephanie Decker, Professor in Strategy, Birmingham Business School “Lukasiewicz deserves commendation for producing this illuminating study of actors and institutions at the intersection of trans-imperial and global finance and politics.” —Ayodeji Olukoju, Professor of History, University of Lagos This book provides a unique account of the financial and political history of the South African War by analysing the organisation and operations of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), the oldest existing stock exchange in the African continent. Identifying the JSE as the nexus between international finance, South African gold mining and British imperialism, the book exposes the financial and political connections between Johannesburg, Pretoria, London, and Paris during the final stage of the imperial ‘scramble for southern Africa.’ Gold mining presented the South African Republic (ZAR) and the whole southern African regional economy with a long-term economic future and new prospects of industrialisation. However, this socio-economic transformation was dependent on extensive capital investments and the institutionalisation of a coercive labour regime based on racial discrimination. This monograph provides the first empirical examination of how international finance, imperial politics, and racialised industrial relations became entrenched in a key financial intermediary in colonial South Africa - first in Kimberley in the Cape Colony, and then in Johannesburg in the ZAR. By studying the Johannesburg capital market’s social microstructures, the author demonstrates how colonial and international financial intermediaries underwrote and financed the largest wave of mining investments in Africa prior to the First World War. Filling an important gap in literature on nineteenth-century British imperialism and Anglo-African-Afrikaner relations, this insightful book uses the JSE as a lens to carefully expose the structures and agency of global finance in the outbreak of the South African War, and the making of South Africa as a unified colonial state. Abstract: This book explores the writing of church history during the early Byzantine period, reconsidering the evidence for the nature and authorship of a hypothetical 'Arian' source for many surviving medieval histories of the fourth century. It considers surviving ecclesiastical histories written between the fifth and early thirteenth centuries to draw out commonalities apparently owed to this 'lost' source and discusses attempts by modern historians to reconstruct it. In doing so, it convincingly argues that this 'Arian' material likely belongs not to one work, but three: two chronicles and a martyrology. This book therefore provides a vital reassessment of fourth-century Christian historiography, as well as important insights on chronicle writing in the Middle Ages. Joseph J. Reidy is Senior Lecturer of History at Kennesaw State University, USA.

Abstract: This book provides a meta-reading of how ethnographic discourses on women and Islam in Turkey have changed since their emergence in 1983. It analyses the published ethnographic works in three discursive periods and shows that paradigm shifts in social sciences, processes of neo-liberal globalization and globalization of Islamism as well as political, social, cultural and economic transformations at the local level shape these periods. As an exceptional example of modernization in the Middle East and the post-imperial states in South-East Europe, Turkey has been experiencing tensions between Islamic beliefs and practices and Westernization and secularization processes. Countless aspects of Muslim women’s lives appear as symbols and indicators in this society like in many other Muslim majority societies and to scholars of gender and women’s studies in discussing the faith-based patriarchy. Thus, this book exhibits the necessity of developing a critical perspective on ethnographic representations of Muslim women in Turkey. Abstract: The South African economy has largely performed below its potential. Although the size of the South African economy has significantly increased since 1994, its performance has lagged behind other comparable economies, and has even been overtaken by Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa. Unemployment, income inequality, and poverty have remained high since 1994. In the past decade, South African economic performance has been so poor that is has resulted in declining per capita incomes. In this study, Vusi Gumede and his co-authors offer a comprehensive analysis of the South African economy since 1994, dealing with many important issues, ranging from its history to its political travails in an effort to provide better understanding and find possible solutions to ensuring inclusive growth. Abstract: This textbook introduces graduate and upper undergraduate students to Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models. As DSGE models become integral in advanced coursework, this book serves as an invaluable guide, explaining the complexities with a methodological red thread across its five chapters. Starting with the stochastic dynamic models of the Real Business Cycle (RBC) and progressing through the field of New Keynesian Macroeconomics (NKE), it employs DSGE models to shed light on the dynamic nature of economic systems. The book presents the Blanchard-Kahn methodology for theoretical solutions, discussing its usefulness and limitations as models evolve in complexity. The book goes on to explain the shift from analytical to numerical solutions, showcasing the DYNARE software and providing coding insights. Unique to this volume is a chapter on difference equations, equipping students with essential mathematical tools, and a concluding exploration of a medium-sized New Keynesian Economics model. This book will equip students to navigate the theoretical complexities of the topic and to independently replicate and comprehend the presented results. It bridges the gap between classical and Keynesian paradigms, reviving the debate in today's "RBC vs NKE" landscape. It will enable students to master the essence of macroeconomic theories and methodologies, paving the way for their scholarly pursuits.

Abstract: “Darren Bryant convincingly shows how Londoners' prospects during the Blitz were defined by just where in the capital they were living. Using case studies to point up surprising differences between one local district and another, he transforms our understanding of the experience of The Bombing War. Remarkable.” —Jerry White, Emeritus Professor of Modern London History, Birkbeck, University of London, UK “This book will change how you think about Londoners and the Blitz. In a fascinating and deeply researched study, Darren Bryant shows how local circumstances created very different experiences of bombing. I richly recommend the book not just to those interested in the Blitz, but to anyone interested in London's past and the wider history of civilians under fire in the Second World War.” —Daniel Todman, Professor of Modern History and Head of the School of History, Queen Mary University of London, UK This book takes a fresh approach to the London Blitz by viewing this time through individual local boroughs of the metropolis. The term ‘London Blitz’ means that culturally we have become accustomed to understanding that the actual blitz experience was the same wherever in the capital one happened to be, despite some areas being hit more than others. This book illustrates how there were many London blitzes, not one, influenced by a myriad of metropolitan localities, and giving rise to an agency of locality that helped to shape the lived blitz experience. By walking through the streets of London, this book conducts a local area analysis, witnessing the blitz through six London localities, representative of the assorted administrative, economic, and socio-political variables prevalent in wartime London. Covering air raids alongside topics like the provision of shelters, homelessness, and communal feeding, it shows how any history of the London Blitz must acknowledge that it was an experience reflective of a varied metropolis. Darren Bryant was awarded his PhD in History from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK.

Abstract: This book deals with the complex process of national identity formation in the late Ottoman Empire and early Turkish Republic, during a crucial period characterized by transformative events that reshaped both the state and society. These events included revolutions, wars, mass migrations, ethnic cleansing, genocide, the empire's disintegration, territorial and demographic changes, and the emergence of new states. In the face of these events, a multitude of old and new formulations and imaginings of nation and national identity took shape and interacted with each other. This book focuses on highlighting the diversity of concepts and trajectories that existed during the period and how these played out within a complex web of inclusionary and exclusionary processes, and the various ways in which the nation was constituted and conceptualized.

Abstract: This contributed volume offers a wealth of cases that explore the factors and conditions required for heritage tourism to be economically and socially beneficial to local communities without impairing the natural environment, cultural heritage preservation, or sustainability for future generations. The studies presented here comprise an examination of measures which have been and can be implemented to ensure sustainable use of natural and cultural systems, leading to a new concept of tourism that incorporates science and community practices together to create a favorable environment where tourists and locals can experience meaningful interactions and experiences. The book focuses on the role of stakeholders in the development of a new policy regarding the sustainable management of cultural tourism and the possibility of their involvement in the processes governing policy-making. Emphasis is placed on the role and commitment of local and international authorities, including UNESCO, in preserving the world's endangered cultural and natural heritage, as well as the responsibilities of Member States and public and private actors with respect to future conservation challenges.

Abstract: This book contributes to a worldwide history of textual criticism and critical editions of ancient scientific texts. It first looks at ancient editorial practices, and at their impact on modern editions. Contributions analyze how, through time, the perception of what a text was may have changed, and influenced how scholarly texts were made accessible. The second section looks at the historical, political and social contexts within which editions and translations of ancient scientific texts were produced. Finally, the last two parts examine the specificities of editions and translations that bore on scholarly documents. Not only is there a focus on how the elements specific to scientific texts—such as diagrams and numbers—were treated, but case studies analyzing the specific work carried out to edit mathematical and astronomical texts of the past are also offered to the reader. The scholarship displayed in this work lays the foundation for further studies on the history of critical editions and raises questions to those who make scholarly translations and critical editions today.

Abstract: "If an author were to attempt combining a love story of development practice and a scholarly text on digital transformation, this would be it.” —Luci Abrahams, Director, LINK Centre, University of the Witwatersrand “Nagy Hanna had to build the infrastructure within the World Bank and in Sri Lanka to realize the goal of digitally-enabled development. He helped us fashion the vision for e-Sri Lanka, build a new national ICT Agency, get Bank financing and facilitate implementation of a pioneering digital transformation program. As a dedicated internationalist, Hanna ably argued the case of his client in the context of a difficult environment. A tightrope walk act between client and donor, which he balanced admirably.” —Eran Wickramaratne, MP. Founding Chair ICT Agency & Former Minister of Finance, Sri Lanka This book provides detailed insight into what governments and institutions can do to drive digital transformation in a nation pursuing economic development. Drawing on real-world case studies and practical advice, the book breaks down digital transformation of public services, healthcare, and the move toward smart cities. Synthesizing publicly available information, the book captures how the World Bank transformed its response to the digital revolution in several nations. Nagy K. Hanna takes readers through the pioneering export strategy of software services in India’s and Sri Lanka’s first integrated digital transformation program. The resulting book is a guide for policymakers, development economists, and change-makers seeking new ways to harness the power of digital technologies to promote inclusive and sustainable development. Nagy K. Hanna advises countries and aid agencies on economic development and digital transformation programs. For more than three decades, he held senior positions in operations and strategic functions at the World Bank. Hanna was the World Bank's first senior advisor focused on digital economy. He was Visiting Professor at University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, as well as Senior Fellow and Board Member at the Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies. He is Cofounder of People-Centered Internet, a global forum for inclusive digital transformation. He teaches and advises on digital leadership. Hanna has published extensively on digital leadership and national digital strategies.

Abstract: This open access edited book investigates European social rights in practice from socio-legal perspectives. It brings together fourteen socio-legal scholars, representing Nordic and Western European countries, who analyse different aspects pertaining to European social rights, namely the regulation of social rights, encounters between welfare professionals and citizens, and citizens’ mobilisation of social rights. These three different aspects from the structure for the sections in the anthology, each analysing transformations related to regulation, encounters and rights mobilisation. The book contributes to the existing literature as it focuses on interdependent transformations on macro, meso and micro levels which are key for understanding processes and contexts related to European social rights in practice. It speaks particularly to academics in sociology of law and/or regulation. Stine Piilgaard Porner Nielsen is Postdoc in the Department of Law at University of Southern Denmark. Ole Hammerslev is Professor of Sociology of Law at Lund University, Sweden.

Abstract: This book tells the uncommon story of a missionary family in the Midwestern United States, and their interactions with the indigenous Ojibwe. When Leonard and Harriet Wheeler arrived at La Pointe, Wisconsin in July of 1841, hoping to help the Ojibwe understand and accept the value of Christian civility, they did not expect such a profound transformation of their own lives. The Wheelers’ empathy for the Ojibwe not only grew during their twenty-five years of mission work in Northern Wisconsin, much of it spent trying to protect the Ojibwe from predatory whites, it also influenced the lives of their children. Nancy Bunge, a Professor Emerita at Michigan State University, also served as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature and Culture at the University of Vienna, the Free University of Brussels, the University of Ghent, and the University of Siegen. She was a visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School.

Abstract: This book explores the current state of healthcare practice and provides a roadmap for harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and other modern cognitive technologies for neurogenerative diseases. The main goal of this book is to look at how these techniques can be used to classify patients with neurodegenerative diseases by extracting data from multiple modalities. It demonstrates that the growing development of computer-aided diagnosis systems has a lot of potential to help with the diagnostic process. It offers an analysis of the prospective and perils in implementing such state of the art. Progressive brain disorders with a high prevalence in the general population include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, Huntington's disease, and motor neuron disease. Worldwide, it is estimated that 33 million people have Alzheimer's disease, and 10 million people have Parkinson's disease. The global health economy is significantly impacted by these disorders, which affect both the patient and the caregivers. Various diagnostic techniques are used for differential diagnoses, such as brain imaging, EEG analysis, molecular analysis, and cognitive, psychological, and physical examination. The book aims to develop effective treatments, enhance patient quality of life, and extend life expectancy. It focuses on novel artificial intelligence approaches to clarify the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders and provide early diagnosis. The authors compile recent developments based on machine learning and deep learning techniques to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases using imaging, genetic, and clinical data. The authors support initiatives and methods that aim to improve the application of algorithms in diagnostic practice.

Abstract: This book provides a unique scientific contribution to the debate on Marx's legacy in proposing to critically articulate two “lines of discussion” which are most often kept apart. On the one hand, it reassesses the place of Marxian thought in the construction of Europe, seeking to revitalize the European political debate. On the other, it situates Marx' thought in the perspective of postcolonial and decolonial studies, with particular attention to their effort to overcome the indisputable limits of the Marxian legacy. In asking whether Marx’ thought was too European or not European enough, the book examines internationalist emancipatory politics and eurocentrism, class struggle and finance in the shaping of the European institutions, migration, identity and violence, as well as Marxian critiques of colonialism both within and beyond Europe. At a time of extreme tension, also within leftist politics, this book provides a precise and rigorous argument on what continues to make Marx's thought relevant, in grappling with social domination in the era of global capitalism, while also exploring the limits of Marxism today, both at the European level and worldwide.
