    Kurzfassung: Despite the rediscovery of the inequality topic by economists and other social scientists in recent times, relatively little is known about how economic inequality is mediated to the wider public. That is precisely where this text steps in: it examines how mainstream news media discuss, respond to, and engage with such important trends. The work addresses significant 'blind spots' in the two disciplinary areas most related to this volume - political economy and media/journalism studies. Firstly, key issues related to economic inequalities tend to be neglected in media and journalism studies field. Secondly, mainstream economics have paid relatively little attention to the evolving scope and role of mediated communication.

    Kurzfassung: In this work, Paul Apostolidis asks what we can learn about social and economic precarity by considering the situation of Latin American migrant day laborers in the United States today. To do so, the author places Latino day laborers' commentaries in dialogue with critical social theory. Apostolidis sees these day laborers' circumstances both as exceptional and as synecdoches for precarious conditions that affect multitudes of workers. Through its combined approach to critical theory and field research with migrant workers, this text makes a case for a politics that is attuned to questions of time and advanced by precarious workers throughout society.

    Kurzfassung: Recently human capital has emerged as one of the most active areas of research in economics. This research depends fundamentally on good data, and efforts at constructing useful measures of educational attainment for a broad panel of countries go back 20 years. In this book the extend the earlier work is extended by presenting and discussing a new long-term data set on educational attainment of the population for 146 countries from 1870 to 2010. In addition, new data is given on educational quality based on internationally comparable test scores for 134 countries from 1965 to 2010.
