Results and Relevance of the Findings -- 7. Overall Conclusion. .
Abstract: This book offers a fresh perspective on the Habitats Directive's rules on designating Natura 2000 - the European biodiversity conservation network. Although the Habitats Directive came into force in the early 1990s, the network is not yet optimally set up and lacks coherence and connectivity. The author examines the Habitats Directive’s provisions regarding the designation of Natura 2000 and discusses possible reasons for the EU Member States’ ongoing lack of compliance with their designation duties. She reassesses the 2015 REFIT Fitness Check of the Nature Directives to look for the Member States’ reasons for not having optimally complied with their designation duties yet. She then analyses the Habitats Directive to reveal elements of non-optimal drafting in its designation provisions. Sensible law reforms that do not interfere with the general framework of the Habitats Directive and which keep in mind the relevant national, regional, and international biodiversity law and policy, as well as the relevant case law will be discussed to this end. As a result, this book presents an enhanced legal designation framework that can support Member States’ compliance with their designation obligations. The book finally goes beyond the European biodiversity legislation, also shedding light on the effects of the suggested reforms for the broader biodiversity and environmental law and policy landscape, and concludes that reforming the Habitats Directive would benefit a variety of contemporary areas of law. This book targets academics and policy-makers in the field as it provides a scholarly as well as a hands-on approach to the subject of strengthening European biodiversity law.

The Irrelevance of Undercover Tactics to the French Conflict over Whether Prostitution Should be Regulated or Suppressed -- Chapter 4. American activists’ efforts to export their undercover tactics and their abolitionist agenda to the League of Nations -- Chapter 5. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book uses the early twentieth century surveillance reports of urban vice reformers in New York, Chicago, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as well as the US vice report for the League of Nations’ Special Body on Trafficking in Women and Children (from 1927) and French police memoirs, treatises, and histories of vice enforcement in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century Paris to highlight the way in which American reliance on undercover tactics drove American vice enforcement policy, leading to a clash with French vice enforcement policy before the League of Nations. Both the failure of that early effort to exert international influence on vice enforcement and the American embrace of undercover tactics would set the stage for the later American efforts to promote a global war on drugs. Before the League of Nations, in particular, the American delegation’s notable lack of success in mobilizing European crackdowns on prostitution created a blueprint for how not to project American influence overseas, once American advocates of narcotics interdiction sought to promote a global war on drugs. Yet private reformers’ reliance on undercover tactics to investigate prostitution modeled the investigative tactics on which American law enforcement would come to depend, and which it would later seek to export, as a primary weapon in the war on drugs.

Abstract: This book offers a broad international analysis of healthcare corruption, drawing upon criminology, sociology, psychology, law, political and behavioural economics and nudge theory. It engages with the existing key debates on how to define healthcare corruption and the measurement of it but builds on this and offers new analysis of these issues in the private healthcare sector too. Furthermore, it moves beyond the analysis of funds lost to healthcare and includes the impact and costs of healthcare corruption on victims and family members of victims and the CJS. It also uniquely considers that the healthcare sector victimizes patients and its own employees, with the healthcare sector as part of a carceral state to help highlight how different disciplines can contribute to our understanding in reducing healthcare corruption. Graham Brooks is Professor of Criminology and Anti-Corruption at the University of West London, Institute of Police Studies, UK. He specialises in corruption in an international context. Graham has been plenary speaker at the Cabinet Counter Fraud Conference 2012, part of a team measuring fraud in overseas aid for the Dept. of Internal Development (2011-2013), keynote speaker at European Health Fraud and Corruption Network (EHFCN) 2015, in The Hague, and in Athens in 2018, part of Cabinet Office Round-Table discussion on anti-corruption in 2016. Graham has also contributed to Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) workshops on ‘Measuring the Scale of Money Laundering in the United Kingdom’ (London, 2018) and ‘Anti-Money Laundering (AML) responses in online businesses’ (London, 2019). Abstract: This book explores the insurance sector’s potential role, influence, and impact on society in light of new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns. Furthermore, it looks into how financial and technological innovations help reshape insurance regulation and business models. Unlike their predecessors, 21st century insurers have a growing impact on cross-sector service provision by making available to their clients a wealth of expert knowledge and experience in data analytics. The book delves into insurers’ transition from suppliers of products – consisting of risk coverage or investment opportunities – to providers of various services, and ultimately to solution providers by partnering with their clients so as to prevent failure, optimize their clients’ operations and help them excel in their economic sector. Insurance regulations and policies can be affected by various factors, such as changes in the economy, technological advances, and shifting consumer preferences, to name a few. Additionally, the insurance industry can have a significant bearing on the wider economy, making it important for the industry to operate within a framework of comprehensive regulations. This book includes a diverse set of theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented chapters on particular aspects of new trends and wider analyses leading to a more systematic understanding of the industry’s socio-economic role. It offers a mixture of chapters from insurance academics and professionals from different countries, cultures, and scientific backgrounds. The methodologies used are diverse, including legal, sociological, historical, economic and financial as well as interdisciplinary analyses. The book has a global scope, including chapters of a more global nature and others addressing particular jurisdictions on different continents, including Europe, Asia and North America.

Abstract: This textbook introduces graduate and upper undergraduate students to Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models. As DSGE models become integral in advanced coursework, this book serves as an invaluable guide, explaining the complexities with a methodological red thread across its five chapters. Starting with the stochastic dynamic models of the Real Business Cycle (RBC) and progressing through the field of New Keynesian Macroeconomics (NKE), it employs DSGE models to shed light on the dynamic nature of economic systems. The book presents the Blanchard-Kahn methodology for theoretical solutions, discussing its usefulness and limitations as models evolve in complexity. The book goes on to explain the shift from analytical to numerical solutions, showcasing the DYNARE software and providing coding insights. Unique to this volume is a chapter on difference equations, equipping students with essential mathematical tools, and a concluding exploration of a medium-sized New Keynesian Economics model. This book will equip students to navigate the theoretical complexities of the topic and to independently replicate and comprehend the presented results. It bridges the gap between classical and Keynesian paradigms, reviving the debate in today's "RBC vs NKE" landscape. It will enable students to master the essence of macroeconomic theories and methodologies, paving the way for their scholarly pursuits.

Abstract: Review of the Two Existing Artificial Neural Network Models – Multilayer Perceptron and Probabilistic Neural Networks -- Beyond the Original PNN Model – Kernel Memory for Modeling Various Neural Pattern Processing Mechanism -- Modules within the Artificial Mind System and Their Interactions Relevant to Language Pattern Processing -- Concept Formation.
Abstract: This book proposes a novel connectionist approach to a challenging topic of language modeling within the context of kernel memory and artificial mind system, both proposed previously by the author in the very first volume of the series, Artificial Mind System—Kernel Memory Approach: Studies in Computational Intelligence, Vol. 1. The present volume focuses on how syntactic structures of language are modeled in terms of the respective composite connectionist architectures, each embracing both the nonsymbolic and symbolic parts. These two parts are developed via inter-module processes within the artificial mind system and eventually integrated under a unified framework of kernel memory. The data representation by the networks embodied within the kernel memory principle is essentially local, unlike conventional artificial neural network models such as the pervasive multilayer perceptron-based neural networks. With this locality principle, kernel memory inherently bears many attractive features, such as topologically unconstrained network formation, straightforward network growing, shrinking, and reconfiguration, no requirement of arduous iterative parameter tuning, construction of transparent and hierarchical data structures, and multimodal and temporal data processing via the network representation. Exploiting these multifacet properties of kernel memory with interweaving the notion of inter-module processing within the artificial mind system provides coherent accounts for concept formation and how various linguistic phenomena, viz. word compoundings, morphologies, and multiword constructions, are modeled. The description is then extended to more intricate network models of context-dependent lexical network and syntactic-oriented processing, the latter being the central theme of the present study, and further to those representing a hybrid of nonverbal and verbal thinking, and semantic and pragmatic aspects of sentential meaning. The book is intended for general readers engaging in various areas of study in cognitive science, computer science, engineering, linguistics, philosophy, psycholinguistics, and psychology.

Abstract: This book is a comprehensive study of the history of pew-renting in the church of England, from the first known rented sittings in the fifteenth century to the system’s collapse in the twentieth. The book’s significance is partly its originality; no book and very few articles or portions of books have appeared solely on pew-renting since the nineteenth century, and even those of that time were not histories – they were polemical works that generally attacked pew-renting on religious grounds. This work encompasses the distinction between formal letting of seats – which involved the methodical letting of sittings by church authorities with set rents – and informal pew-letting, in which congregants tipped pew-openers and sidesmen for favourable seats for one service. It also details the concomitant difficulties and hindrances encountered by churches and renters, the means of setting the rents and collecting the proceeds, the types of congregants who rented pews, the controversy the practice provoked, and the deception and bending – and sometimes outright breaking – of the applicable law. J.C. Bennett received his PhD in History from the University of Birmingham in 2011. He has currently an appellate attorney in Texas, USA.

Abstract: There has been a steady stream of articles written on the relations between political thought and the interpretation of literature, but there remains a need for a book that both introduces and significantly contributes to the field – particularly one that shows in detail how we can think more freely and creatively about political possibilities by reading and reflecting on politically significant literature. This volume offers analytically acute and culturally rich ways of understanding how it is that we can productively think philosophically about political literature and what kind of distinctive conceptual progress we can make by doing so. Given the extremely widespread interest in political issues, this volume will strike resonant chords far and wide, while offering something that has not been done quite in this way and for which the time certainly seems right. Garry L. Hagberg is the James H. Ottaway Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at Bard College, USA and Editor of the journal Philosophy and Literature. Author of four books and editor of nine volumes, he is presently completing a new book, Consciousness Portrayed: Seven Case Studies in Philosophical Literature.

Abstract: Stephen Glynn has produced a terrific book on British TV sitcom spinoff films. He writes clearly and concisely and with a demonstrable passion for the subject. He pulls off the difficult trick of bringing an impressive breadth of knowledge to this material while also communicating it in helpful and often amusing ways. -Paul Newland, University of Worcester This book constitutes the first full volume dedicated to an academic analysis of theatrically-released spinoff films derived from British radio and television sitcoms. Regularly maligned as the nadir of British film production and marginalised as a last resort for the financially-bereft industry during the 1970s, this study demonstrates that the sitcom spinoff film has instead been a persistent and important presence in British cinema from the 1940s to the present day, and includes works with distinct artistic merit. Alongside an investigation of the economic imperative underpinning these productions, i.e. the exploitation of a proven product with a ready-made audience, it is argued that, with a longevity stretching from Arthur Askey and his wartime Band Waggon (1940) to the crew of Kurupt FM and their recent People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021), the British sitcom spinoff can be interpreted as following a full generic ‘life cycle’. Starting with the ‘formative’ stage where works from Hi Gang! (1941) to I Only Arsked! (1958) establish the genre’s characteristics, the spinoff genre moves to its ‘classic’ stage where, secure for form and content, it enjoys considerable popular success with films like Till Death Us Do Part (1969), On the Buses (1971), The Likely Lads (1976) and Rising Damp (1980); the genre’s revival since the late-1990s reveals a more ‘parodic’ final stage, with films like The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse (2005) adopting a consciously self-reflective mode. It is also posited that the sitcom spinoff film is a viable source for social history, with the often-stereotypical re-presentations of characters and events an ideological metonym for the concerns of wider British society, notably in issues of class, race, gender and sexuality. Stephen Glynn lectures in Film and Television at De Montfort University, UK. He has published widely on British cinema and genre and previous volumes for Palgrave include The British Pop Music Film (2013), The British School Film (2016) and The British Football Film (2018).

Abstract: This handbook offers an updated and comprehensive presentation of knowledge on Korean modern and contemporary food history. It covers the changes in food availability, nutrition, and the health status of Koreans, and the Korean food industry's development from the late period of Joseon dynasty in the mid-19th century, to the present. This period includes the severe poverty and food shortage of the Joseon dynasty, followed by the Japanese invasion, Independence and the South-North division, the Korean war, and rapid industrial development. The influence of national and international environments and political changes during the last 150 years on the Korean food security and the nutritional situation of the people is demarcated. In doing so, the author makes novel suggestions on possible contributions to alleviate the world food crisis in the future. Relevant to food historians and food scientists, and East Asian studies scholars with a particular interest in Korean culture and history, this is a pioneering work that elucidates the driving forces for the development and betterment of Korean society—through food acquisition.

Abstract: This book explores the significant textual relationship between Mary and Percy Shelley and the early works of the Brontë siblings. Through a detailed examination of the Shelleyan narrative accessible to the Brontës from their childhood to their final novels, this study argues for a fresh perspective on the Brontës' engagement with the Shelleys in both their juvenilia and later seven novels. In this respect, the book considers the Brontës as readers rather than exclusively as writers, viewing them as a product of the early nineteenth-century literary marketplace which maintained affinities to Romanticism. Reading, rewriting, and appropriating the textual Shelleys was a fundamental vein stemming the Brontës’ writing from childhood, with Mary epitomising the model for what the sisters would eventually become: the female novelist. Abstract: This book examines for the first time how ancient Egypt is reflected in early modern Venetian sources. As a center of the printing industry, Venice was an important hub for the accumulation and dissemination of direct information on the Near East and the Levant. Therefore, ancient Egypt played a significant role in the cultural memory of Venice due to the lagoon city’s religious and mercantile orientation towards the East. The book explores how the acquisition, selection, and interpretation of Egyptian objects took shape in Venice, and which actors were involved in the circulation of knowledge about ancient Egypt. Venice can be used as a lens through which to understand the reception of ancient Egypt in the early modern period. Meaningful and partly unpublished sources from primarily Italian archives highlight the visual imagination of ancient Egypt and its lexicographical codification. The author draws upon these sources to examine the Venetian image of ancient Egypt in the early modern period and the epistemic change that accompanied it. Sabine Herrmann is an independent scholar based in Venice, Italy. Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for the History of Medicine of the Robert Bosch Stiftung (IGM), the Georg-August University of Göttingen, and the University of Tübingen, all in Germany.

Abstract: “This book takes a sophisticated multi-disciplinary approach to the central issue of the EU’s borders in a changing and turbulent world, and the content of the volume reflects the breadth and the significance of the problem. The focus on borders is distinctive and enables some important insights about European and world order more generally. This will be an important contribution to a growing literature on the implications of the European crisis.” - Michael Smith, Honorary Professor in European Politics, University of Warwick, UK This open access book examines the implications for the EU of a radically changed international context characterized by systemic rivalry, competition over norms and regulations, and growing strategic tension. Globalization that once tied national economies together and internationalized social phenomena, such as education, research and innovation, and tourism, has gone in reverse. An opposite trend is driving the world into distinct spheres of competing models of governance, regulation, technological development, and communication. Facing the most extensive rupture of economic and inter-state relations since the onset of the Cold War, the management of the EU’s internal and external borders is taking on a completely new meaning. The open access book brings together scholars from economics, law, and political science to provide up dated assessments and policy advice on the insecurity in the neighborhood and war in Ukraine, the EU’s role in the future European security architecture, weaponized energy dependence, and the global competition on norms. Abstract: Chapter 1: The Craft -- Chapter 2: Shaping Justice -- Chapter 3: Feeling Justice -- Chapter 4: Being Justice -- Chapter 5: Crafting.
Abstract: This book is about the making of justice. Despite the growing scholarship on transitional and transformative justice, contested struggles for justice in times of political change fail to get the nuanced attention we think they deserve. It seeks to understand how the making of justice is a craft and how this process of craft making is itself a source of political change. The authors introduce a new and novel conceptual framework of justicecraft which sheds light upon political change by unpacking five key elements—the skills, knowledge, labor, affect, and materiality—involved in contested struggles for justice. Justicecraft illuminates the stories and struggles for justice, enabling a greater understanding of accompanying social, political, and cultural shifts in society which unfold during times of conflict. By framing justice as craft, the authors offer a more fluid understanding of how people are producing justice on the ground—and identify the means, the instruments, the language, and claims involved in the process. Each chapter applies the framework of justicecraft to diverse global case illustrations of struggles against past, present, and future injustices and wrongdoings and draws out the key elements embedded in these processes. Abstract: Potshots at regaining her hegemonic position have underlined Nigeria’s international relations history in the last 25 years or more. The ‘Giant of Africa’ has seen its best years, and yet has witnessed its lowest times in global politics, which deserves a holistic study. This book is that gap-filler, examining Nigeria’s declining political hegemony in Africa between 1985 and 2022, a period characterised by dramatic internal political, social, and economic downturns that negatively affected her image and international relations. The study traces the country’s shifting leadership and foreign policies through different eras. Chapters analysing the Nigerian foreign policy internal dynamics, ideology, her military and civilian leadership, and how these played out in Nigeria's regional influence, paint a holistic politico-historical portrait of a nation in hegemonic flux from 1989 continuing into the present day. Deploying National Role Conception as an analytical tool to contextualise and dissect Nigerian foreign policy, this book deepens our understanding of the nation’s international relations and challenges preconceptions as to how, and through what lenses, foreign policies of declining states can and should be considered. Through its approach, the book offers scholars, students, researchers and policymakers fresh perspectives and tools for analysing foreign policies of states, particularly Nigeria. Sheriff Folarin is Professor of International Relations and teaches at Texas State University and University of Rwanda. He is also a Professor-at-Large at the Institute for Peace, Security and Development Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and Ife Institute of Advanced Studies, both in Nigeria, where he teaches graduate students and research fellows. Abstract: This edited volume investigates the Czech response to the European migration crisis of 2015. Focusing on the discourses and practices the book analyses the foreign policy ideas which were guiding the Czech foreign policy in the period from 2014 to 2019. The chapters offer a variety of methodologies (discourse analysis, content analysis, and case study) and perspectives (decision-makers, NGOs, emotions, foreign policy practice, and European partners). All the chapters rely on a common conceptual framework that operationalises foreign policy ideas as ideologies (Atlanticism, Europeanism, Internationalism, and Sovereignism) and roles (Democracy Supporter, Protectee, Faithful Ally, Regional Collaborator, Reformer, and Prosperity Builder). The main benefit of the book consists in using a unique conceptual framework to produce new empirical insights into the Czech foreign policy making. The book will be of particular interest to the students of the Czech politics and it can be also used as a case study in foreign policy-making. It also offers a nuanced perspective on the Central and Eastern Europe decision-making during the EU migration crisis which goes beyond the usual ideological classifications of those countries in the West European public discourse. Petr Drulák is a Professor at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the Faculty of Arts of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, a senior researcher at the Institute of International Relations in Prague, and a guest professor at the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA). He served as Ambassador of the Czech Republic to France and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He published extensively on Central Europe, national interest, and theory of international relations (e.g., in European Journal of International Relations, Journal of European Public Policy,Geopolitics, Journal of International Relations and Development, and Osteuropa).

Abstract: This book delves into Trinidad and Tobago's development with a fresh lens. It stands as the inaugural empirical exploration of the country's unique attributes, including its diversity, ex-British colony status, small-state categorization by population size, and its dependence on hydrocarbons. Through meticulous empirical analysis, this book scrutinizes the nation's economic, social, and political outcomes within the context of these four distinctive parameters, offering fresh insights into the country's development trajectory. What sets this book apart is its unwavering commitment to a data-driven approach. Drawing upon a vast array of databases from both international and national sources, it provides a thorough examination of development indicators, household welfare metrics, firm-level performance, and individual perspectives on a wide range of political, economic, and social issues. For scholars, policymakers, and anyone with an interest in understanding how unique contextual factors shape a Trinidad and Tobago's development, this book offers an enlightening and data-rich perspective on the nation's journey towards progress and prosperity. Abstract: “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has fundamentally challenged the EU’s political, legal and economic foundations. What will be its impact on the EU (and EU studies), not only in the short-, but also mid- and long-term? This book provides all the relevant answers, expressed in clear analytical terms and supported by abundant empirical evidence. A crucial contribution to the debate about the future of Europe.” —Federica Bicchi, The London School of Economics and Political Science “The War against Ukraine: the EU facing new realities examines the consequences of Russia’s war on Ukraine for the process of European integration and the practice of the study of Europe. Bringing together a superb collection of contributors, the volume challenges past thinking while opening new avenues for explaining and understanding the new landscape for European foreign policy.” —Richard G. Whitman, University of Kent This open access book aims at discussing the manifold consequences that the War against Ukraine bears for the European Union and EU Studies. It takes stock of the fact that the Russian Attack on Ukraine and the ensuing War not only affects the Global Order, but also has challenged a number of established narratives and convictions for the European Union and its member states. The EU now needs to position itself in the changing world order. Concretely it needs to deal with a number of membership applications, internal and external challenges to liberal democracy, and the development of its strategic autonomy in a number of decisive policy fields. The book convenes experienced scholars, with chapters covering the following themes and fields: Theories, approaches and concepts in EU studies and IR; the EU and the changing European and Global Order; the War and defence of liberal democracy; Membership Politics; Energy Policy. Abstract: “The authors demonstrate that the Council of the European Union, though imperfect and undoubtedly impervious to reform, manages to strike a balance between national interests and the need for supranational action.” -Jean-Paul Jacqué, Honorary Director General, Council of the EU, Emeritus Professor of EU Law at the University of Strasbourg, France “EU Council Presidencies in Times of Crises is a highly topical and welcome publication and merits the attention of all those who want to understand the EU.” -Jim Cloos, TEPSA Secretary-General, Former Senior EU Civil Servant “EU Council Presidencies in Times of Crisis is required reading for anyone interested in European institutions.” -Sabine Saurugger, Professor of Political Science, Director of Sciences Po Grenoble, France The Council of the EU is a powerful institution whose centrality has been challenged by the Treaty of Lisbon. More than ten years after this major institutional revision, this book examines its role within the EU political regime and its interactions with other institutions. It explores how the Council Presidency has navigated major crises over the past decade and addressed internal challenges. The various chapters discuss key timely questions: How has the relationship between the Council and the European Council evolved over time? To what extent have the recent crises reshaped the relationship between the Council and the European Parliament, as well as its interactions with the Commission? Is the Council Presidency still a powerful mediator? What are its internal challenges? What are the prospects for the rotating presidency system? Abstract: This book is the first of a three-volume set introducing the history of scientific thought (including social and human science). The area covered in this volume is ancient Mesopotamia, classical Antiquity and the Islamic Middle Ages. Combining general descriptions with extensive excerpts from original sources in English translation, it concentrates on ways of thinking and actual argumentation and not just on results and mistakes; questions of validity are primarily dealt with in the perspective of the time of the writing, not on that of the 21st century. The work is of great interest to historians of science and culture, students as well as seasoned workers – but also for amateurs willing to invest the necessary serious efforts.

Abstract: This book explores the geopolitical and symbolic borders of Europe through the concept of the semi-periphery. Focusing on the North Atlantic island nations, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, and Turkey – a set of very different social and cultural landscapes – the book compares the semi-peripheral aesthetics of Halldór Laxness’s and William Heinesen’s novels with the semi-peripheral city and borderscapes in works by Orhan Pamuk and Latife Tekin. It offers new readings of texts such as Laxness’s The Atom Station and Pamuk’s Snow, and provides original readings of works that little has been written about in English, such as Heinesen’s The Black Cauldron and Tekin’s Swords of Ice. Making use of the theory of uneven and combined development and world systems theory, the book illustrates that the experience of nation-building and capitalist modernisation in the semi-periphery results in a particular realist aesthetic that is remarkably similar across different regional literatures. The book’s world-literary method shows that the semi-periphery constitutes a vital and productive area of study both for world literature and for broadening our understanding of colonialism and imperialism on the margins of continental Europe. Abstract: This book is one of two volumes that examines the successes and failures of the Ghanaian Fourth Republic from a political, public administration, and public policy viewpoint. Published to coincide with the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the Fourth Republic, these volumes bring together leading scholars to consider the political achievements and failures that have taken place in the country since 1993, and what these tell us about the state of politics and democracy in twenty-first century Ghana and beyond. This volume focuses on public sector management and economic governance. It assesses themes such as policy elites, policing, bureaucrats and public servants, the economy, decentralization, rural development, and foreign policy. The volume also places Ghana in a global context, demonstrating how lessons learnt from the country can be applied elsewhere, and what is unique about the Ghanaian experience. It will appeal to all those interested in public management, public administration, governance, economics, and African politics. Joseph R.A. Abstract: This book considers the growing popularity of solo motherhood via gamete donation and how this type of “cyborg conception” is narrated in medicine, bioethics, fiction, and memoir. It identifies solo mothers as radical women who exist in a space beyond binarity (male/female dual-rearing dynamic) and heteronormative discourse; solo mothers represent, among other diverse family constructions (such as same-sex couples and throuples), a critical intervention in the dominant narrative of the nuclear family which defines the “ideal” reproductive model. This book combines memoir and scholarly research to present a deeply nuanced and rigorous overview of the solo motherhood phenomenon. Abstract: Essays on Music, Adolescence, and Identity: The Adolescentia Project explores music consumption, self-discovery, media culture, and memory through autoethnographic essays on albums we loved during adolescence covering three decades (1980-2010) as the music industry and socio-cultural identity landscapes in the United States significantly changed. By examining these influential albums, we can better understand the role of popular culture in identity construction and the long-term impact of these formative musical experiences. Abstract: “For anyone interested in contemporary Romania, the publication of Post-Communist Progress and Stagnation at 35, is an exciting event. Ably edited by distinguished Professors Lavinia Stan and Diane Vancea, this volume brings together sophisticated analyses by some of the most clear-sighted specialists to argue that Romania’s post-communist transformation has failed to achieve even an approximation of a liberal democracy or to create conditions in which the mainstream media, the educational system, or the economy itself can operate free of corruption and abuse.” --Sabrina P. Ramet, author of East Central Europe and Communism: Politics, Culture, and Society, 1943-1991 (Routledge, 2023) This book examines Romania’s efforts to consolidate liberal democracy and market economy, as desired by the generation who effected change in 1989 and required by the European Union. The ousting of Nicolae Ceausescu, leader of an autarchic and nationalistic dictatorship, underscored the limitations of politically engineering change when rule of law is weak, institutions are misused, and intolerance and cheating are prevalent. Despite initial hopes, Romania’s transition combined progress and stagnation, missed opportunities, detours, unintended consequences, and success. The contributions illustrate the tenuous relationship between continuity and change in a country that is yet to catch up with its neighbors. Lavinia Stan is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Post-Communist Studies at St. Francis Xavier University, Canada. Diane Vancea is Professor of Economics and International Affairs and President of the Senate of the University “Ovidius” in Constanta, Romania. .

Abstract: As a contribution to critical social theory, this book reconsiders Marx’s critique of political economy through the concept of labour as “not-capital”. Engaging with thinkers who have dealt with Marx’s concepts of “not-capital” and “not-value”, Tetler examines whether and how these concepts can contribute significantly towards a renewal of the critique of political economy beyond the limits of traditional Marxism. In doing so he provides the first in depth interrogation of these concepts, both within Marx’s work itself and within and across the various intellectuals who have put them to use in their attempts to address the faults of traditional Marxism. He argues that the theory of value that sits at the heart of Marx’s critique of political economy requires a negative conception of labour. In helping establish this, the notions of labour as not-capital/value are shown to have formidable ramifications concerning the crisis-ridden nature of capitalist social relations and the struggles operative within and against them. Benjamin Tetler is an independent scholar. He received his Ph.D. in Politics from the University of York in 2023. .

Abstract: Freddy and Bijukumar present a rather nuanced and yet incisive analysis on the emerging dynamics of international conflicts. They present especially novel perspectives on conflicts unfolding between emerging powers and great powers that will eventually determine the nature of great power competition in the twenty-first century. - Prof Swaran Singh, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi A seminal work on Great-Power Conflicts by Freddy and Kumar brings a fresh and Global South perspective to comprehend the emerging great power conflicts. The book demonstrates how these conflicts not only alter the international system but also threaten peaceful development of Global South. Theoretically sound, the book puts forward a very convincing proposition that emerging great-power conflicts are rather becoming new norm and thereby these “asymmetrical” conflicts not only alter the regional structure but also trigger great- power conflicts. -Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Associate Professor, Department of East Asian studies, Delhi University The rise and fall of states in the international system has been an interesting problem which has received attention amongst scholars, policy makers, journalists, politicians and leaders of states. The dramatic rise of China and India in particular, in terms of their economy and military capabilities, has brought about a paradigm shift in terms of thinking about world politics that is coupled with the decline of the US’ hegemonic status. This volume explores potential futures when it comes to emerging power - great power competition and what may push us towards more pessimistic or optimistic scenarios. Haans J Freddy is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, Madras Christian College, Chennai, India. V. Bijukumar is Professor and Chair, Centre for Political Studies, School of Social Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India.

Abstract: This book explores the intersections of affect, memory and privilege among Bogota’s upper middle class. Combining approaches from memory studies, anthropology, feminist and affect theory, this work is concerned with the implications for the present and potential futures contained in affective encounters. It is structured along four affects describing the social, spatial, historical and political aspects of ‘being affected’ by the Colombian conflict. After showing how the Colombian conflict is rooted in specific affective relationships to land, disappointment and crushed hopes in the context of various peace negotiations are portrayed as the central experiences nurturing a sense of a doubling or re-experiencing of past emotions. Then, a specifically upper-middle class emotional habitus and its implication for the social connections to people more directly affected by the conflict are outlined, and peace as an upper middle-class affect is revealed as a privilege not everyone deserves. Hendrikje Grunow is coordinator of the German-Colombian MA program Conflict, Memory and Peace at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. She holds a doctorate from the University of Konstanz and studied Anthropology and Latin-American Studies in Berlin, Bogota, Zurich and Bern. She co-coordinates the Latin-American regional group at the Memory Studies Association.

Abstract: This book makes the powerful argument that Latin America needs to be a more central part of the discourse on emerging globalities and in the pursuit of an inter-civilizational focus to avoid West-centric perspectives. It deploys a cultural political economy approach that sees the global political economy as inescapably cultural and allows us to avoid the hyper-rational analysis of economics. It explores various aspects of contemporary Latin America from the revival of dependency theory, the ‘pink tide’ governments since 2000 and, in particular, the potential of the Andean Buen Vivir political philosophy, to offer a distinctive paradigm for sustainable global development. The book provides a de-colonial frame and states that many recent and new social science perspectives emerging globally are connected with Latin American scholars and Latin American social experiments: namely, dependency, decolonial and post-colonial epistemologies, post-neoliberalism, and the notion of Pluriverse. The book touches on the cultural, including the ethical, the economic and the political, and environmental dimensions of this transformation, which represents a reaction and solution to the Western cultural, including ethical, economic, political, environmental crises. The readership for this book includes all who are fascinated by the globalisation lens on the one hand and the experience of Latin America on the other hand. .

Abstract: This book analyzes the ‘Five Eyes’ nations’ concerns and policies relating to national security threats through an interdisciplinary theoretical engagement with the Political, Information, Security and Economic (PISE) Model. Through the analysis of secondary data sources such as scholarly and government reports, policy documents, press releases and interviews, the author analyzes the five case studies—Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and the USA—to determine how and why nations use the PISE variables to shape favorable homeland security outcomes, to determine what the points of homeland intersectoral collaboration are among the ‘Five Eyes’ nations. In so doing, Weaver determines that although the ‘Five Eyes’ countries have concerns about homeland security and each, individually, identifies threats and hazards, they do also employ collaborative measures to build resilience and increase efforts to prepare for anticipated security breaches. John Weaver is an associate professor of Intelligence Analysis at York College of Pennsylvania (USA), a retired DOD civilian from the United States’ Intelligence Community, and has served as an officer in the US Army (retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel). He has lived and worked on four continents and in 19 countries respectively, spending nearly eight years overseas (on behalf of the US government). His experience includes multiple combat deployments, peace enforcement, peacekeeping, humanitarian relief and disaster assistance support in both conventional and unconventional/non-traditional units. John has trained and certified multinational NATO reconnaissance teams based in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain for worldwide deployment in full-spectrum mission sets. He has also personally led several reconnaissance missions throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia (including multiple missions in Afghanistan).

Abstract: This book offers a comprehensive analysis of infrastructure insecurity issues in the historic Niger Delta, drawing on empirical fieldwork involving host communities, regulators, and multinational oil and gas operators. It introduces innovative models and theories, such as a pipeline life cycle model focusing on community development, community neglect aggression displacement theory, social aggression theory, stakeholders’ policy development model, contemporary poor governance cycle model, and an infrastructure insecurity nexus model, linking governance, socio-economic conditions, and infrastructure insecurity in resource-rich regions of the Global South. The book bridges gaps left by previous publications, providing depth and applicability of data. It employs the Frustration- Aggression Displacement theory to explain underlying triggers of violence and uses real-world case studies, diagrams, and charts to facilitate understanding. Suitable and engaging for individuals, communities, or regulators involved in oil and gas activities alike, this book offers valuable insights into onshore pipeline infrastructure insecurity in Nigeria, West Africa, and the broader Global South, addressing regulation, compliance, environmental concerns, social aspects, and technological innovations. Abdul L. Abraham Jatto’s research is focussed on oil and gas pipeline infrastructure insecurity in the Niger Delta, with expertise in contemporary political security and resilient infrastructure security. Following a PhD in Politics from the University of Lincoln, focusing on onshore oil and gas pipeline infrastructure insecurity problems in the Niger Delta region. It involved the design of integrative security and socio-economic models for safe transportation of oil and gas, infrastructure security. He has developed a proven interest and experience in the broad spectrum of Nigeria’s human and national security architecture and community development drawing on multi-disciplinary academic qualifications and professionalism. He is an appointed subject expert Judge in Politics and International Relations for the Global Undergraduate Award, Dublin, and has published across many reputable scholarly journals in the field. .

Abstract: This book gives an account of the origins of theoretical mechanics in antiquity, its limited reception in the Arabic and Latin Middle Ages, and its recovery and subsequent development in Italy to the time of Galileo. From late antiquity to the fifteenth century, the ancient science of mechanics—the theory of machines—was almost completely unknown in the Latin west. Then, from the mid-fifteenth century on, Italian humanists began to recover the ancient texts, and from them through the sixteenth century Italian mathematicians restored the ancient science of mechanics. The Renaissance of Mechanics first examines the principal ancient works on mechanics—the Aristotelian Mechanical Problems, the mechanical geometry of Archimedes, and Hero’s Mechanics—and then describes their limited reception in the Arabic world and their even more limited transmission to the medieval Latin west. It then traces their recovery in the fifthteenth century and their assimilation in the sixteenth by Niccolò Tartaglia, Francesco Maurolico, and Guidobaldo dal Monte, culminating in Galileo’s rediscovery of Hero’s lost mechanical principles. The book ends with an examination of Galileo’s mechanics and its relation to his new science of motion, and suggests how modern mechanics would emerge from these ancient roots. Detailed analyses of these works offer new insights and interpretations while remaining accessible to general historians. The Renaissance of Mechanics will be of especial interest to those working in the fields of renaissance humanism and the history of ancient, medieval, and renaissance science and mathematics.

Abstract: This book is based on Stephen Hill’s direct experience working in the United Nations for many years as consultant and over a decade as full time Member of Staff—based in Indonesia and part-time in Paris, serving as United Nations Regional Director for Science for Asia and the Pacific as well as Principal Director and Ambassador of the United Nations Agency UNESCO (the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) across South East Asia. It was not always a quiet life. Stephen had to handle the negotiations and aftermath of two of his own UN staff taken hostage in 1996 for five months by freedom fighters into the jungles of West Papua; the May 1998 Revolution in Indonesia where he had to escape his house at 2.00am through mobs and fires while his own security staff had changed into civilian clothes and run off down the street to escape, then evacuate everyone else, but stay to report to the UN Security Council and liaise with the incoming Transition Government. In the early 2000s, Stephen needed to escape Indonesia, under UN Security instruction, from the terrorist organisation, Abu Sayyaf from Mindanao, the Southern Philippines, when they sent a Hit Squad down through Manado and across Sulawesi towards Jakarta to assassinate him in Jakarta because of his collaborative work throughout Mindanao’s previous fundamentalist Islamic conflict zones, amongst other things, bringing literacy to 7,000 villagers, mainly women, building nine radio stations with community support across religious lines, and introducing basic education into Islamic Schools previously teaching only the Koran and Arabic. This book captures all of this rather exciting life but delivers a message from experience—the Power of Community and Cultural Empowerment in successful United Nations Action to bring positive change into the world.

Abstract: “Deploying … cogent theoretical ideas, lively observations from multilateral meeting rooms and candid remarks confided by key players, James shows how … politics and expertise are inevitably intertwined. Readers interested in heritage conservation, global governance and the political economy of knowledge in our post-truth times will be inspired by his piercing analysis.” (— Christoph Brumann, Head of Research Group, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle, Germany “By foregrounding the figurative and reciprocal economy of ‘prestige’ in the world of heritage conservation, this thorough, empirically grounded study … opens new and important lines of enquiry in understanding the politics of the past in the present. In doing so, the book makes a significant intervention in current debates regarding world heritage and the future of cultural heritage conservation...” — Rodney Harrison, Professor of Heritage Studies, University College London, UK “Interesting and thought-provoking, this book … gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Engaging and readable, it brings a fresh approach to our understanding of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.” — Claire Cave, Assistant Professor School of Archaeology, University College Dublin, Ireland Addressing the topic of expertise in international cultural conservation, this book argues that the UNESCO World Heritage regime emerged as a Faustian pact between protection and prestige, and a productive tension between these elements remains at its core, embodied by the heritage expert. Tracing experts’ practices in the World Heritage regime, this book shows how they burnish, broker and themselves benefit from World Heritage prestige. As World Heritage prestige also contributes to states’ international status claims, the stakes are raised, with both the denouement of the pact and the future for World Heritage poised between condemnation and redemption. Luke James is a heritage studies scholar, lawyer and heritage practitioner specialising in World Heritage and international conservation governance. Luke is Lecturer, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies at Deakin University and previously worked in the Australian Government’s International Heritage Section, with UNESCO and as a heritage consultant.

Abstract: The United States as Global Liberal Hegemon examines America’s role as the global liberal hegemon. Using a historical analysis to understand how the United States came to serve as the world leader, Goldberg argues why the role of a liberal hegemon is needed, whether the United States has the ability to fulfill this role, and what the pitfalls and liabilities of continuing in this role are for the nation. He also considers the impact that this role on the global stage has for the country as well as individual citizens of the United States. Goldberg argues that the United States's geographic location away from strong competitors, it's role as the dominant economy for much of the 20th century, and its political culture of meritocracy all contributed to the United States taking this role in the 1940s. He also argues that the role of liberal hegemon has shifted to include not only being the international policeperson but also to be the world's central banker, a role that at this time only the Unites States can fill. Abstract: Technologies and tech companies are routinely accused of creating many societal problems. This book exposes these charges as mostly myths, falsehoods, and exaggerations. Technology Fears and Scapegoats debunks 40 widespread myths about Big Tech, Big Data, AI, privacy, trust, polarization, automation, and similar fears, while exposing the scapegoating behind these complaints. The result is a balanced and positive view of the societal impact of technology thus far. The book takes readers through the steps and mindset necessary to restore the West’s belief in technological progress. Each individual chapter provides a cogent and often controversial rebuttal to a common tech accusation. The resulting text will inspire conversations among tech insiders, policymakers, and the general public alike. Robert D. Abstract: Drawing on extensive research from a 14-month ethnographic study, this book delves into the intricate lives of married women in a rural Sinhala village in Sri Lanka. It explores their efforts to uphold community expectations while employing innovative and strategic approaches to navigate ruptures within their marital journeys. The chapters progress by dissecting the pivotal gender roles assumed by women in building happy marriages, establishing stable households, cultivating harmonious homes, and achieving effective household management. At the heart of this narrative is the concept of ‘homemaking,’ which symbolises not only family life but also social stature. The text discusses how the categorisation of homes as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ relies on women’s conscientious adherence to gender norms. Notably, the author also looks at the unique practice of married women resorting to sorcery as a means to mitigate the challenges stemming from marital disruptions while remaining aligned with societal gender expectations. Throughout, chapters systematically investigate the spectrum of opportunities available to these women, alongside the constraints they encounter, as they endeavour to cultivate successful marriages. Overall, the book provides profound insights into the complex interplay of married life, spotlighting women’s astute negotiations of their roles and adept management of ruptures within the framework of established gender norms. This book will be of interest to scholars in Gender Studies, Anthropology, Family Studies, and South Asian Studies.

Abstract: This book examines the nexus of collective intelligence (CI), a feature of online projects in which various types of communities solve problems intelligently, and open policymaking, as a trend of large groups of people shaping public policies. While doing so, it presents the current state of theoretical knowledge for these concepts, many practical examples of successful and unsuccessful projects, as well as additional research and laboratory experiments. The book develops an analytical framework based on qualitative research, which is applied to the analysis of different projects in selected case studies, such as Decide Madrid; Better Reykjavik; Loomio; Deliberatorium; Civic Budget of the City of Kraków. The book is structured into four chapters, addressing essential questions in the field: (1) Opening Policymaking; (2) Beyond the Individual: Understanding the Evolution of Collective Intelligence; (3) A Review of the Projects Using Collective Intelligence in Policymaking; (4) Online Public Debate. How Can We Make it More Intelligent? The book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of political science, public policy, and public administration, as well as policymakers interested in a better understanding of collective intelligence and open policymaking.

Abstract: This book delves into the complex dynamics of legitimizing power in fragile states. With five comprehensive chapters, it analyzes the geopolitical, domestic, and international dimensions of fragile states. The unique contribution lies in unraveling specific forms of legitimization linked to various types of state fragility, providing a nuanced understanding. The book distinguishes between temporary crises and chronic fragility, crucial for shaping effective international support strategies. It addresses the challenges and consequences of weak legitimacy on global security, highlighting its impact on aid interventions and systemic stability. The author's analysis emphasizes the diverse nature of political regimes in fragile states, incorporating considerations of hybrid regimes. Additionally, it explores the dynamics of authoritarian enclaves at the sub-state level, revealing their potential national influence. By scrutinizing the decline of trust in democratic systems, the book addresses contemporary challenges, making it a vital resource for understanding and navigating the complexities of fragile states' political landscapes. Abstract: This book sheds new light on the interactions between the science of complexity and the science of systems. Though both of these fields have been independently studied extensively, their interrelations have not been satisfactorily analyzed. By a superficial view, both the sciences are based on the same principles of the holistic behavior of the ensembles consisting of components. The author providing an expert analysis on the theory of complexity and bridges the gap to generalize it, by elaborating on all the observable manifestations of complex forms and behaviors and explaining how it is related to general theory of systems. Particular attention is given to the use of chemical concepts throughout the text to demonstrate the theories as well as the interactions between the two. The central point of this book is the new rational representation of systems that origins from some chemical concepts about the structure of molecules and graph theoretical chemical theory. This novel text appeals to experienced researchers, students, and all those curious about theories of systems, complexities, and theoretical chemistry.

Abstract: This book constructs the theoretical framework based on a range of prominent social theories to address how juvenile delinquency is socioeconomically constructed. Here the presentation of conceptual details is supported by Chinese literature that rationalises, problematises, and analyses how left-behind children are vulnerable to premature smoking, heavy drinking and drug abuse and. I critically review all the most recent publications to highlight the most updated socioeconomic structure of juvenile delinquency experienced by Chinese left-behind children. In addition, the author summarises and analyses all the most up-to-date policy recommendations and evaluations concerning the mitigation of left-behind children’s juvenile delinquency. The policymaking outputs help inform readers on how Chinese policymakers have specifically been endeavouring to intervene in left-behind children’s delinquent behaviours and what policy directions the corresponding policymakers are trending towards in the future. .

Abstract: Aid organizations usually embrace the idea of digitalization, both in terms of using diverse technologies and processing data digitally for improving their services, making their operations more efficient and even mitigating various risks. While digital fundraising, the use of biometric ID systems or digitalized cash and voucher assistance enjoys widespread attention both in academic and practitioner circles, it is less known how aid organizations navigate between counterterrorism legislations and data protection laws in technical terms. Limiting the discussion to the EU General Data Protection Regulation and by conceptualizing screening — commonly used to prevent the use of donor money for illicit purposes, money-laundering, terrorism finance or corruption — as a data processing operation conducted by larger international aid organizations operating in the Global South, this book focuses on the matter of ‘transparency’ and ‘right to information’ being at the nexus ofsurveillance studies and privacy studies. By means of legal and social science methods, it simultaneously explores screening in light of classic surveillance and analyses whether opacity around screening by NGOs (data controllers) is in line with the spirit of European Union data protection regime from the perspective of individuals (data subjects). In so doing, Paragi also contributes to the discussion on the politics of transparency and highlights the dilemmas and challenges aid organizations operating in authoritarian regimes or conflict settings may face. Beata Paragi is Associate Professor at the Institute of Global Studies at Corvinus University of Budapest. Abstract: This book examines what the justification of political power and the character of a liberal political community in the conditions of pluralism should look like, with the aim of equal respect for all. Sylvie Bláhová argues that if those who understand the principle of respect as the basis of political liberalism are to fulfill all the prerequisites of this principle, they must ensure respect within the liberal political community as a whole. The classic interpretation of political liberalism ensures respect during the process of justification of political power, yet many individuals in the liberal political community remain disrespected, mainly due to their group membership. Accordingly, Bláhová looks for a more complex interpretation of the principle of respect within political liberalism, one that ensures respect beyond the justification of political power. The author argues that the way to achieve respect in the liberal political community is to interpret the criterion of reciprocity in a dual way. Specifically, Bláhová claims that respect can be ensured only only in conjunction with the principle of civic friendship, which makes respect more comprehensive. This novel interpretation can ensure unity of the liberal political community and make it stable, which is crucial in conditions of pluralism. Sylvie Bláhová is Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science, Philosophical Faculty, University of Hradec Králové, Czechia. .

Abstract: “Vander Tavares has done it again! Taking a social justice perspective in language education, Tavares and the authors advance linguistic justice reforms through critically reflecting on how pedagogies of multiliteracies can empower language learners, teachers, and teacher educators in the unequal world of late modernity.” -Sender Dovchin, Professor, Curtin University, Australia “This book is an important and timely contribution to the field of language education, particularly in relation to empowering pedagogies of multiliteracies. It will be a useful and helpful resource for language educators, students, and those interested in language-related learning and teaching more broadly." -Paul Meighan, McGill University, Canada This book presents conceptual and empirical studies on how pedagogies of multiliteracies can empower language learners, teachers, and teacher educators in an increasingly globalized yet unequal world, with a focus on social justice in language education. The chapters offer critical and innovative pedagogical insights that contribute to re-envisioning language and literacy education in the 21st century in a number of educational contexts, including post-secondary, community, refugee, science, language, and teacher education. From a raciolinguistic critique of monoglossic education in the United States to drama-based pedagogies for refugee learners in Iceland, this book contextualizes language learner empowerment by identifying and confronting ideologies of race, gender, nationality, and language. Creative multimodal and multisensorial pedagogies are enacted through learner-designed plurilingual portfolios, infographics, picturebooks, identity texts, performance, and museum-based learning. This book diversifies and enriches current approaches to language education based on pedagogies of multiliteracies that cultivate learner agency, identity, and critical reflection, and it will be of interest to readers with backgrounds in second/foreign language education, TESOL/ESL, sociology of education, and applied linguistics. Vander Tavares is an Associate Professor at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. He focuses on language and teacher education, and internationalization of higher education. He is the co-editor of Language Teacher Identity: Confronting Ideologies of Language, Race, and Ethnicity and Critical and Creative Engagements with Diversity in Nordic Education.

Abstract: This book presents a collection of studies related to populism in contemporary political discourse. Following growing scholarly interest in the topic, this volume offers a wide panorama on the discursive construction of populism across the political spectrum worldwide. International experts from different backgrounds provide a comprehensive analysis of populist communication in present-day politics. Each chapter in the book constitutes a case study from a different country, altogether offering a global perspective on the construction of populism in political discourse. In particular, the book presents studies from fourteen different countries across the globe: Belgium, France, Spain, the United States of America, Portugal, Montenegro, Italy, Ghana, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Japan, Russia, Poland, and Israel. Here, readers can (1) get acquainted with discourse on populism in the media; (2) have access to ample descriptions of populist communication strategies across frontiers; (3) explore populist discourse by contemporary societies’ well-known political leaders from different countries; and (4) examine the intertwining of populism, policymaking, and religion. Rooted in different frameworks, the various chapters offer a comprehensive understanding of the complex phenomenon of populism. The volume also enables the reader to globally grasp similarities and differences in the way populist discourse is built from West to East. International and interdisciplinary approaches form the cornerstone of this volume that will appeal to scholars from diverse academic backgrounds.

Abstract: “After two decades dissecting England’s social structure, concentrating its essence and delivering it back to its people on stage and screen, James Graham gets the same treatment in this detailed and perceptive analysis of his place in our country’s tottering cultural and political ecosystems. Philpott excavates how he pierces the carapace of an opaque and fast-moving polity, yet speaks with easy wit and profound wisdom to commercial audiences who barely know of Graham himself, never mind Gramsci.” —Gary Naylor, Broadway World and The Arts Desk, UK James Graham is one of the UK’s leading dramatists, a multi-award-winning writer who for almost 20 years has analysed and articulated concepts of power and authority in modern British society. James Graham: State of the Nation Playwright is the first full-length assessment of the writer’s output, applying core thematic areas – Democracy, Anarchy, Famous Faces and Television – to understand how different power bases operate in modern society, their effectiveness and influence, and how they came to pre-eminence during the last 70 years. The book concludes with an evaluation of Graham’s contribution to state-of-the-nation debates, Britain’s cycles of decline and its consequences for understanding contemporary national identity. Abstract: While text processing is often associated with the digital humanities, it is still seen as worlds apart from literary modernism and its aesthetic preoccupations. This book upsets that narrative. Examining literary manuscripts from some of the twentieth century's best-known and lesser-known novelists, from Marcel Proust to Mina Loy, Alex Christie reveals where authors experimented with proto-digital writing methods by hand. Instead of looking to computers as sources of inspiration, the authors discussed turned to twentieth-century media for their ability to reveal new layers of the material world. From analog fantasies of contacting the dead to digital anxieties of invisible information, the aesthetic ambitions of these novels can be traced back to their author's interest in emerging media devices and their technical operation. To capture the magic of such devices through writing, these authors devised radical methods for generating literary text, anticipating today's digital humanities. Alex Christie is Associate Professor of Digital Prototyping at Brock University's Department of Digital Humanities, Canada. He has published in Digital Humanities Quarterly, Journal of Interactive Technology and Pedagogy, and Reading Modernism with Machines; he co-edited American Science Fiction Television and Space; his digital projects include z-axis research and Pedagogy Toolkit.

Abstract: -- Chapter 1 Introduction. -- Chapter 2 Constructivist Theoretical Framework. -- Chapter 3 China as Territorial Empire.
Abstract: This book presents an original explanation of the stark contrast between two very different Chinese foreign policy patterns. On the one hand, there is Beijing’s hard power actorness related, among others, to territorial disputes and ‘wolf warrior’ intimidating maneuvers. On the other hand, there are China’s peaceful and cooperative actions, well-illustrated by the Belt and Road Initiative. This book shows that this situation is best understood as a consequence of the coexistence of two different Chinese identities respectively associated with the concepts of nineteenth-century-style territorial empire, and twenty-first-century-style postmodern global power. The book contends that in China’s case, they form a virtuous circle—characterized by a specific division of labor—as both identities are instrumental to the construction of a new, Chinese-led international order. The book provides a detailed analysis of the genesis, development, features, and interplay of these identities. It is relevant to scholars in China studies, political history, contemporary politics, and foreign policy.

Abstract: This book navigates global educational policy concerning critical thinking skills and competencies. The author explores the concept of criticality from the perspectives of several critical traditions, and draws on the works of Paulo Freire and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The diverse and intricate ideas, methods and ways of thinking that emerge are examined in the new perspectival space of ‘criticality scholarship’. Pursuing his own political and philosophical aspirations, the author endeavours to link a critical education with the promotion of democracy and social justice. Opportunities for further empirical and theoretical research are signposted. The book will be of interest to scholars in educational philosophy. Marc James Deegan is a retired Australian and English barrister and a former legal academic. He works with Reader Services in the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, UK.

Abstract: This book extends the contemporary concept of the minimal self by introducing the affective core self. The overall aim is to integrate certain psychoanalytical ideas into the phenomenological investigation of passivity and reformulate the idea of the phenomenological unconscious. This volume contributes to the multidimensional analysis of the self by positioning the affective core self between the layers of the more minimal and the less minimal self. It underscores the importance of the unconscious in the constitution of the affective core self by providing the comparative analysis of the phenomenological and the psychoanalytical unconscious. Furthermore, comparisons are drawn between Freud’s conception of the afterwardsness of trauma and the phenomenological notion of retroactive sense-constitution. The book concludes that retroactive sense-making is a double-sided phenomenon and differentiates between implicit-bodily and conscious-narrative retroactive sense-constitution. In order to bolster the idea of implicit-bodily sense-constitution the volume also examines and utilizes contemporary insights on the nature of body memory. The conclusion claims that the affective core self is constituted in time by means of the underlying processes of the two-sided retroactive sense-constitution. This text appeals to students and researchers working in phenomenology and philosophy of mind.

Abstract: This book seeks to explore a fundamental obscurity in electoral behavior literature: while socioeconomic status is typically robustly and positively associated with a higher propensity for voting worldwide, the relationship in Africa is either negative or non-existent. Building upon the author’s previous works relating to political participation, behavior and electoral processes, this work focuses specifically on 35 sub-Saharan African political system case studies and analyzes why resource-poor Africans tend to display greater electoral participation than their more comparatively affluent counterparts. Drawing from a methodological–theoretical framework utilizing Afrobarometer data and group mobilization theories such as the civic voluntarism model, electoral clientelism, democratic quality, preference theory and institutional perspectives, this book makes an original contribution to analyzing African regions less well-examined in existing comparative participatory political science literatures. Elvis Bisong Tambe is a senior lecturer in Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His research interests lie in the field of political behavior, political participation, public opinion, voting and electoral processes, with a focus on new and emerging democracies. He is the author of Electoral Participation in Newly Consolidated Democracies: Turnout in Africa, Latin America, East Asia and Post-Communist Europe (Routledge, 2021).

Conclusion.
Abstract: This open access book is an exploration of city responses to migrants with a precarious status in Europe. It provides new evidence and analysis from research on three cities in Austria, Germany and the UK: Vienna, Frankfurt and Cardiff. The book explores strategies and services of municipal authorities towards precarious migrants and their cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in service provision. It focuses on healthcare, education, housing and access to advice; and particular attention is given to the situation of women. The book develops the concept of precarity in relation to migration status, and of horizontal governance arrangements within municipal authorities. It explores the tension between exclusion and inclusion of migrants who have limited rights of access to welfare services, and contributes evidence on the factors shaping municipal policy making, as well as on the framing of rationales for providing access to essential services.
