Abstract: In August 1880, businessman Adrian Jakobsen convinced eight Inuit men, women, and children from Hebron and Nakvak, Labrador to accompany him to Europe to be "exhibited" in zoos and Völkerschauen (ethnographic shows). Abraham, Maria, Noggasak, Paingo, Sara, Terrianiak, Tobias, and Ulrike agreed, partly for the money and partly out of curiosity to see the wonders of Europe, which they had heard about from Moravian missionaries. The Inuit arrived in the fall of 1880 and were much talked and written about in the local press. Meanwhile, the Moravian missionaries, who had begged them not to embark on the journey, were busily writing letters and trying to stay in contact with Abraham and his family. By January 1881 all eight Inuit had died of smallpox. This story is told through several different perspectives, from Abraham's diary, the earliest known Inuit autobiography, and the missionaries’ letters and reports, to a scholarly article, newspaper pieces, and even advertising. Many illustrations, including portraits done of the Inuit visitors, scans of some of the original documents in German, and recent photos of the abandoned Moravian mission in Hebron, round out Abraham’s intriguing and unfortunate story.

Abstract: Feiern oder flüchten?

Abstract: In this fresh, literate, and biting critique of current thinking on some of today's most important and controversial topics, leading anthropologists take on some of America's top pundits. This absorbing collection of essays subjects such popular commentators as Thomas Friedman, Samuel Huntington, Robert Kaplan, and Dinesh D'Souza to cold, hard scrutiny and finds that their writing is often misleadingly simplistic, culturally ill-informed, and politically dangerous. Mixing critical reflection with insights from their own fieldwork, twelve distinguished anthropologists respond by offering fresh

Abstract: "This book explores a range of societies in and around the Pacific and southern Africa in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that encountered religions introduced from elsewhere, or fashioned their own responses to already established religious traditions. These changes observed through the responses of the receiving societies indicate that religious change is a creative dynamic, rather than a passive acceptance of new ideas, beliefs and practices."--Jacket

Abstract: Computer-centered networks and technologies are reshaping social relations and constituting new social domains on a global scale, from virtually borderless electronic markets and Internet-based large-scale conversations to worldwide open source software development communities, transnational corporate production systems, and the global knowledge-arenas associated with NGO networks. This book explores how such "digital formations" emerge from the ever-changing intersection of computer-centered technologies and the broad range of social contexts that underlie much of what happens in cyberspace. While viewing technologies fundamentally in social rather than technical terms, Digital Formations nonetheless emphasizes the importance of recognizing the specific technical capacities of digital technologies. Importantly, it identifies digital formations as a new area of study in the social sciences and in thinking about globalization. The ten chapters, by leading scholars, examine key social, political, and economic developments associated with these new configurations of organization, space, and interaction. They address the operation of digital formations and their implications for the development of longstanding institutions and for their wider contexts and fields, and they consider the political, economic, and other forces shaping those formations and how the formations, in turn, are shaping such forces. Following a conceptual introduction by the editors are chapters by Hayward Alker, Jonathan Bach and David Stark, Lars-Erik Cederman and Peter A. Kraus, Dieter Ernst, D. Linda Garcia, Doug Guthrie, Robert Latham, Warren Sack, Saskia Sassen, and Steven Weber.

Abstract: As more and more Asian medical practices cross into Western culture through the popularity of yoga and herbalism, and as Western medicine finds its way east in the form of plastic surgery, these systems of meaning become inextricably interrelated. The essays in this volume consider the larger implications of transmissions between cultures.

Abstract: The Inka tradition follows the Huari and Tiwanaku periods through the development of the Inka empire to the Spanish conquest and dates to 800-400 B.P. The Incan empire united city states across the Andean region. This collection consists of 23 documents, including important primary sources dating to the period of the Spanish conquest which detail Inka social organization, customs, and religion (Pedro de Cieza de León, Bernabé Cobo, Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Juan Polo de Ondegardo; selections from Narratives of the rites and laws of the Yncas, including Polo de Ondegardo, Pachacuti-Yamqui Salcamayhua and Garcilasso de la Vega). Rowe and Zuidema use the primary sources to examine Inka society. Bauer uses material culture to describe the Cuzco ceque system. Hyslop describes Inkan-built settlements. Murra looks at economic and social organization before the Spanish conquest. Silverblatt compares gender issues from before the Inka empire to after the Spanish conquest; Costin examines the role of women in textile prdocution. D'Altroy examines the interaction between the Inka and the conquered ethnic groups; this and related topics are examined in detail in selections from Inca and Aztec states, 1400-1800 (Pease G.Y., Murra, Wachtel, Rowe, Julien and Morris)

Abstract: Historically, canonic studies of ritual have discussed and explained ritual organization, action, and transformation primarily as representations of broader cultural and social orders. In the present, as in the past, less attention is given to the power of ritual to organize and effect transformation through its own dynamics. Breaking with convention, the contributors to this volume were asked to discuss ritual first and foremost in relation to itself, in its own right, and only then in relation to its socio-cultural context. The results attest to the variable capacities of rites to effect tr

Abstract: At the beginning of the twenty-first century the demand for anthropological approaches, understandings and methodologies outside academic departments is shifting and changing. Through a series of fascinating case studies of anthropologists' experiences of working with very diverse organizations in the private and public sector this volume examines existing and historical debates about applied anthropology. It explores the relationship between the ""pure and the impure"" - academic and applied anthropology, the question of anthropological identities in new working environments, new methodologi

Abstract: Envisioning the Past brings together archaeologists, art historians, and anthropologists to offer new perspectives on the construction of knowledge concerning the antiquity of man. The volume demonstrates the extent to which the visual presentation of archaeological research creates a particular discourse, powerful enough to shape our understanding of archaeological knowledge. No category of images is immune from this process, from site drawings to museum displays and from manuscript illustrations to digital media. Yet, given the frequent use of images as illustrative material in professional archaeological publications, museums, websites, and TV programs, there are important lessons to be learned. If a genuinely unmediated image is impossible, how should images be used? What can we learn from considering the use of images in the past and present that might guide our responsible use of them in the future? Moving beyond unchallenged presumptions about the passivity of the visual record, Envisioning the Past re-evaluates the importance of the image as a key contributor to the reconstruction of the past

Karin Hunn, geb.

Abstract: In einer seltenen Kombination von Kompetenz haben ein Architekturhistoriker (Niels Gutschow) und ein Indologe (Axel Michaels) Todesrituale der ethnischen Gemeinschaft der Newars im Kathmandutal, Nepal, dokumentiert.

Abstract: Since first contact, Natives and newcomers have been involved in an increasingly complex struggle over power and identity. Modern "Indian wars" are fought over land and treaty rights, artistic appropriation, and academic analysis, while Native communities struggle among themselves over membership, money, and cultural meaning. In cultural and political arenas across North America, Natives enact and newcomers protest issues of traditionalism, sovereignty, and self-determination. In these struggles over domination and resistance, over different ideologies and Indian identities, neither Natives nor other North Americans recognize the significance of being rooted together in history and culture, or how representations of "Indianness" set them in opposition to each other. In Indian Country: Essays on Contemporary Native Culture, Gail Guthrie Valaskakis uses a cultural studies approach to offer a unique perspective on Native political struggle and cultural conflict in both Canada and the United States. She reflects on treaty rights and traditionalism, media warriors, Indian princesses, powwow, museums, art, and nationhood. According to Valaskakis, Native and non-Native people construct both who they are and their relations with each other in narratives that circulate through art, anthropological method, cultural appropriation, and Native reappropriation. For Native peoples and Others, untangling the past-personal, political, and cultural-can help to make sense of current struggles over power and identity that define the Native experience today. Grounded in theory and threaded with Native voices and evocative descriptions of "Indian" experience (including the author's), the essays interweave historical and political process, personal narrative, and cultural critique. This book is an important contribution to Native studies that will appeal to

Abstract: E.G. Browne relates this story in his A Year amongst the Persians in orderto demonstrate the gross ignorance which sometimes characterises [amulls] decisions. The episode was related to Browne by one of his Bbassociates in Kerman, and the question was designed to expose this ignoranceof the clergy. As it is related here, however, the jibe is unwarranted. A hole half a yard in each direction is not half a yard square (it is half ayard cubed). The mull, in the absence of a specification of depth, assumesthat the hole is dug to the same depth as the original request. This assumptionis

Abstract: Anthropologists have long sought to extricate their work from the policies and agendas of those who dominate - and often oppress - their native subjects. "Looking through Taiwan" is an uncompromising look at a troubling chapter in American anthropology that reveals what happens when anthropologists fail to make fundamental ethnic and political distinctions in their work. Keelung Hong and Stephen O. Murray examine how Taiwanese realities have been represented - and misrepresented - in American social science literature, especially anthropology, in the post-World War II period. They trace anthropologists' complicity in the domination of a Taiwanese majority by a Chinese minority and in its obfuscation of social realities. At the base of these distortions, the authors argue, were the mutual interests of the Republic of China's military government and American social scientists in mischaracterizing Taiwan as representative of traditional Chinese culture. American anthropologists, eager to study China but denied access by its communist government, turned instead to fieldwork on the Republic of China's society, which they incorrectly and disingenuously interpreted to reflect traditional Chinese society on the mainland. Anthropologists overlooked the cultural and historical differences between the island and the mainland and effectively legitimized the People's Republic of China's claim on Taiwan."Looking through Taiwan" is a powerful critique of American anthropology and a valuable reminder of the political and ethical implications of social science research and writing. Keelung Hong is the CEO and chairman of Taiwan Liposome Company and the co-author (with Stephen O. Murray) of "Taiwanese Culture, Taiwanese Society: A Critical Review of Social Science Research Done on Taiwan". Stephen O. Murray is the director of El Instituto Obregon in San Francisco, California, and the author of "Theory Groups in the Study of Language in North America: A Social History" and many other books

    Keywords: Black Carib Indians
Abstract: This collection of 22 documents describe the Garifuna, also called Black Caribs, who live on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, Honduras and Belize. The time period covered is from 1000 to 2000. Fieldwork covers a time span of almost 50 years from 1947 to 1993. Nine of the documents are doctoral dissertations. Basic ethnographies are provided by Taylor, Coelho, and Munroe. Historical perspectives of Garifuna cultural formation are provided by Gonzalez and Gullick. Four articles examine ethnic relations with respect to language use and mating/marital patterns. The Garifuna practice of couvade has been a focus of anthropological inquiry, beginning with Munroe. Chernela reinterprets the meaning of the couvade as practiced by the Garifuna. Coe and Anderson survey the region's ethnobotany. Palacio examines the Garifuna food exchange system and more specifically looks at the relationships between food sharing and fosterage, and age and residence patterns. Other topics covered include language shift in relation to new class formation and ethnic identity, gender roles, women's role in social organization, the control of young women's sexual behavior by older women, ethnomedicine, folk songs, and spirit possession

Abstract: This collection of 14 documents describes the Manus people during the period from 1870 to 1992, with a concentration on the 1920s. The Manus are residents of the Papua New Guinea province of Manus. The American anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) conducted fieldwork on the island from 1928-1929 and again in 1953. This collection contains several her works, including her main monographs on personality development and a follow-up study, 25 years later, on the same subject. The other works by Mead in this collection focus on kinship, animism and children's thought, trade and exchange, and a general introduction to Manus culture and society. Fortune wrote on the Manus religion. Carrier and Schwartz wrote on the Manus economy. Gustafsson wrote his doctoral dissertation on Manus leadership. Otto examines the life of one particular leader, Paliau Maloat, and the history of the movement he led. Romanucci-Ross examines Manus medical treatment

Although the Lur are found mainly in three administrative districts of Iran - Lorestan (or Lurestan), Kohkiluyeh, and Bakhtiari - the focus of this collection is on the Lur of the Lorestan district. The cultural summary is based on the article "Lur" by Ronald Johnson in the Encyclopedia of World Cultures, Vol. 9, Africa and the Middle East, John Middleton and Amal Rassam, eds. 1995. It was revised and expanded with the addition of the synopsis and indexing notes by John Beierle in June, 2005

Abstract: This collection of 10 documents is about the Badaga and covers the period from 1550 to the 1990s. The Badagas are the largest community in the Nilgiri Hills at the junction of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu states in southern India. Paul Hockings authored eight of these documents, and his work covers Badaga culture from the first contact with Europeans in the early 1800s up to 1995. His strengths are a thorough analysis of social organization and structure, including kinship, marriage and their associated rituals. Two early sources (Thurston 1909, and Sastri 1891-1892) provide overviews of selected aspects of Badaga society and culture

Abstract: "Comprising a series of contributions by well known scholars from the field of urban studies, the book makes an important contribution to debates about the nature of current socio-economic transformations, the tensions to which they are giving rise, and how western European urban societies are dealing with them. Individual chapters discuss issues such as the distinctive identity of these cities, whether or not segregation is emerging, and what sort of local policies are developing to deal with social exclusion and poverty."--Jacket.

Abstract: "Global Assemblages presents a perspective on the current globalization debates. Rather than examining globalization as a marker for a new epoch or as a broad structural transformation, this volume examines specific technologies, ethical regimes, and administrative systems that articulate contemporary transformations. The chapters combine a sophisticated theoretical approach to these "global" phenomena with detailed study of the assemblages in which they become significant for individual and collective life." "The contributors to the volume are leading scholars from sociology, anthropology, and geography whose research spans Africa, the Middle East, East and South Asia, North America, South America, and Europe. Their work examines the conflicts and controversies at the heart of contemporary debates, in areas such as neoliberal reform, the pharmaceutical industry, financial practices, illegal trafficking, and information technology."--Jacket.
