Abstract: This text provides a critical history of the distinctive tradition of Indian secularism known as Tolerance. Examining debates surrounding the activities of the Arya Samaj - a Hindu reform organization regarded as the exemplar of intolerance - it finds that Tolerance functioned to disengage Indian secularism from the politics of caste.

Abstract: This study is about a popular manifestation of Islamic devotion that embraces a pluralist setting, keeping itself in a dynamic dialogue with non-Muslim practices. With evidence from various public devotional narratives and ritual practices, the author argues that even universal understanding of living Islam remains incomplete if we do not consider this locally produced pluralised devotional setting that surrounds it. He seeks to address various aspects of local and localised Islam through an examination of Gugudu's local and popular transformation of normative Islam, giving particular focus to the various devotional rituals that blend Muslim and Hindu practices in the public event of Muharram.

Abstract: Surrogacy is India's new form of outsourcing, as couples from all over the world hire Indian women to bear their children for a fraction of the cost of surrogacy elsewhere with little to no government oversight or regulation. In the first detailed ethnography of India's surrogacy industry, Amrita Pande visits clinics and hostels and speaks with surrogates and their families, clients, doctors, brokers, and hostel matrons in order to shed light on this burgeoning business and the experiences of the laborers within it. From recruitment to training to delivery, Pande's research focuses on how repr

Description / Table of Contents: Introduction : cultures of milk -- A brief social history of milk consumption in the United States -- A history of milk in India -- Diversity in dairy : cows, buffalo, and nonmammalian milks -- Milk as a children's food : growth and the meanings of milk for children -- Conclusion : milk, biology, and culture in India and the United States
Description / Table of Contents: "Milk is the only food mammals produce naturally to feed their offspring. The human species is the only one that takes milk from other animals and consumes it beyond weaning age. Cultures of Milk contrasts the practices of the world's two leading milk producers, India and the United States. In both countries, milk is considered to have special qualities. Drawing on ethnographic and scientific studies, popular media, and government reports, Andrea Wiley reveals that the cultural significance of milk goes well beyond its nutritive value. Shifting socioeconomic and political factors influence how people perceive the importance of milk and how much they consume. In India, where milk is out of reach for many, consumption is rising rapidly among the urban middle class. But milk drinking is declining in America, despite the strength of the dairy industry. Milk is bound up in discussions of food scarcity in India and food abundance in the United States. Promotion of milk as a means to enhance child growth boosted consumption in twentieth-century America and is currently doing the same in India, where average height is low. Wiley considers how variation among populations in the ability to digest lactose and ideas about how milk affects digestion influence the type of milk and milk products consumed. In India, most milk comes from buffalo, but cows have sacred status for Hindus. In the United States, cow's milk has long been a privileged food, but is now facing competition from plant-based milk." -- Publisher's description

Abstract: This book explores the multi-dimensional asymmetries of scale, time, and directions in the large dam controversy with a regional focus on Asia, especially on India and China. Whereas the concept of large-scale transformation of fluvial environments into technological hydroscapes originated in the West, widespread construction of large dams started in the countries of the Global South in the period after decolonisation. Construction and operation of large dams are amongst the most prestigious but also most sensitive development issues, often accompanied by massive resistance of adversely affected people and civil society organisations. Based on the notion of a contested politicised environment, various case studies are analysed to identify the dominant narratives and imaginations that shape the large dams debate. This volume largely contains contributions related to several subprojects from within the Cluster of Excellence ‘Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows’, based at Heidelberg University, with several expert contributions from external researchers

Abstract: This book assesses the problem of defining exclusion, highlights the need for its contextualisation and establishes a relationship between social exclusion, deprivation and discrimination. It studies the complex mosaic of Indian systems and society, marked with exclusionary practices and structures on the basis of caste. It presents grassroots level information through empirical investigations and studies how physical spaces become sites of exclusion when borders become volatile. Scholars put together their diverse research, studies, perceptions and ideas and, most importantly, their years of expertise to focus on a central theme of social exclusion in Indian society. They study the role of the state as an interventionist force and look into the political mobilisation strategy as a reaction to exclusion. The book also takes a critical look at the reservation policy and argues that state intervention creates certain new forms of exclusion

Abstract: Health and medicine rarely constitute object of enquiry in the social science literature in India. Given the fact that experience of disease and its detection are deeply embedded in social settings, foundational questions on the meaning and experience of health and on the role of medicine have to be raised. Drawing upon published social science research in the field, this book discusses many of these questions. It also brings medical pluralism into the heart of social theory of health and medicine

Abstract: This book depicts the emergence of knowledge society across rural and urban spaces and among cross sections of social collectivities in India. It analyses the new economic momentum and socio-cultural milieu as set in motion with the emergence of this society. The ensuing impact on the pre-existing facets of social identity and marginality, and the processes of construction of new social identities therein are studied. This book delineates both the hope and despair, as produced with the arrival of the knowledge society, and identifies the scope and conditions of alternative choice and liberation for the people within the emerging socio-economic order of this society. Rich in empirical data, this monograph will interest students, researchers, teachers, policy planners and social activists

Abstract: Poverty, Ethnicity and Exclusion Minorities in China and India Poverty Incidence among Minorities Inequalities and Access Minority Migrants Xinjiang (China) vs. Jammu & Kashmir (India) Social Inclusion and Welfare Minorities in a Global Perspective
Abstract: Muslim minorities in China and India form only a small fraction of their respective populations, yet as they principally live in troubled border states, they are of key strategic importance in the war on terror. In this global context, this book explores whether economics is more important than the suppression of rights in explaining social unrest, Muslim minorities in China and India form only a small fraction of their respective populations. Yet as these minorities tend to be grouped in troubled border states they are of key strategic importance in the context of the global war on terror. In this global context, this book compares the regions of Jammu and Kashmir in India and Xinjiang in China, examining the incidence of poverty in terms of low and unequal incomes and lack of access to education, health and other public services. The book argues that economic and social factors (poverty, unemployment, inequalities, discrimination and social alienation) are more important in explaining social discontent, unrest and violence than political and religious factors such as the suppression of religious freedom and cultural identity and the violation of basic human rights. The global war on terror has diluted the domestic drive for self-determination for minorities in both China and India; their legitimate grievances are often confused with those of Islamic militants. The failures of the Chinese and Indian governments to address these grievances in the past may well have reinforced separatist tendencies. This book calls for a strategy to combine vigorous anti-poverty programmes with the prevention of extremist infiltration from abroad as the only way to peaceful development
Abstract: 'As the first thorough study of poverty and inequality among China's ethnic minorities ... this book is warmly to be welcomed ... the chapters on programmes are outstanding. To my knowledge, no other treatment of these important subjects goes into anything like the depth and sensitivity found in these chapters. It is scholarly, detailed and interesting.' - Colin Mackerras, Professor Emeritus, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia 'Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India includes solid research as well as pragmatic policy proposals.' - Morris Rosabbi, City University of New York, USA 'The study is a contribution not only to China studies, but to ... social science discipline.' - Barry Sautman, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 'This book is recommended reading ... and will undoubtedly become a frequently cited work in future research on the topic.' - Bjorn Gustaffson, Gotberg University, Sweden 'The authors provide an informative review and assessment of China's anti-poverty policies and programs, focusing on the experience of Guizhou province, which is largely overlooked by the literature on China.' - Dan Sai, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, China

Abstract: There is widespread consensus today that the constitutional flexibility to alter state boundaries has bolstered the stability of India's democracy. Yet debates persist about whether more states should be created. 'Remapping India' looks at the episode of state creation in 2000, when the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand came into being in some of the poorest, yet resource-rich, regions of Hindi-speaking north and central India, and explains the politics that lay behind this episode of 'post-linguistic' state reorganisation.

Abstract: Life as a Dalit looks at caste society from the point of view of the Dalits, focusing on their worldview, emotions, and critical appraisal of their own position and of the higher groups. It is a volume based on the critical perspectives provided by scholars who have turned around the more acclaimed and accepted theories of caste society privileging the Brahmanical and textual interpretations of caste. It shows that those at the bottom have their own interpretations and follow a rationality that is tutored by their own life conditions and not what is fed to them from the top. These views from th

Abstract: In the past few years, India has given its citizens four important socio-economic rights: the right to information, the right to employment, forest rights, and the right to education. This book thoroughly analyses these rights and their implementation to assess whether these pro-poor initiatives have really benefitted the poor. Pointing out that these have not really worked for them, the book suggests a rights-based framework with proper laws, adequate resources, and institutional infrastructure to bridge the gap between the rights and their rightful beneficiaries.

Abstract: Cities are more than concrete and steel infrastructure. But modern urban theory does not have the language to describe and debate the vital component of urban life that is lived on the streets of cities and towns. This book presents a nuanced argument for a new vocabulary of the city, proposing a way of analysing the materiality of the urban that captures the ever-changing element of human experience. The book looks at urban life in India with a fresh perspective that incorporates the everyday and the unstructured.

Abstract: "Presenting a social history of colonial food practices in India, Malaysia and Singapore, this book discusses the contribution that Asian domestic servants made towards the development of this cuisine between 1858 and 1963. Domestic cookbooks, household management manuals, memoirs, diaries and travelogues are used to investigate the culinary practices in the colonial household, as well as in clubs, hill stations, hotels and restaurants. Challenging accepted ideas about colonial cuisine, the book argues that a distinctive cuisine emerged as a result of negotiation and collaboration between the expatriate British and local people, and included dishes such as curries, mulligatawny, kedgeree, country captain and pish pash. The cuisine evolved over time, with the indigenous servants consuming both local and European foods. The book highlights both the role and representation of domestic servants in the colonies. It is an important contribution for students and scholars of food history and colonial history, as well as Asian Studies"--

Abstract: Interest in Shi'a Islam has increased greatly in recent years, although Shi'ism in the Indian subcontinent has remained largely underexplored. Focusing on the influential Shi'a minority of Lucknow and the United Provinces, a region that was largely under Shi'a rule until 1856, this book traces the history of Indian Shi'ism through the colonial period toward independence in 1947. Drawing on a range of new sources, including religious writing, polemical literature and clerical biography, it assesses seminal developments including the growth of Shi'a religious activism, madrasa education, missionary activity, ritual innovation and the politicization of the Shi'a community. As a consequence of these significant religious and social transformations, a Shi'a sectarian identity developed that existed in separation from rather than in interaction with its Sunni counterparts. In this way the painful birth of modern sectarianism was initiated, the consequences of which are very much alive in South Asia today

Abstract: This book examines the contemporary nature of caste disparities in India from an economist's perspective. Abstract: In the early nineteenth century, German intellectuals such as Novalis, Schelling, and Friedrich Schlegel, convinced that Germany's cultural origins lay in ancient India, attempted to reconcile these origins with their imagined destiny as saviors of a degenerate Europe, then shifted from 'Indomania' to Indophobia when the attempt foundered. The philosophers Hegel, Schopenhauer, and, later, Nietzsche provided alternate views of the role of India in world history that would be disastrously misappropriated in the twentieth century. Reconstructing Hellenistic and humanist views of the ancient Brahmins and Goths, French-Enlightenment debates over the postdiluvian origins of the arts and sciences, and the Indophilia and protonationalism of Herder, Robert Cowan focuses on turning points in the development of an 'Indo-German' ideal, an ideal less focused on intellectual imperialism than many studies of the 'Aryan Myth' and Orientalism would have us believe. Cowan argues that the study of this ideal continues to offer lessons about cultural difference in the 'post-national' twenty-first century. Of great interest to historians, philosophers, and literary scholars, this cross-cultural study offers a new understanding of the Indo-German story by showing that attempts to establish identity necessarily involve a reconciliation of origins and destinies, of self and other, of individual and collective. Robert Cowan is Assistant Professor of English at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York

Abstract: Cultural Mobility is a blueprint and a model for understanding the patterns of meaning that human societies create. Drawn from a wide range of disciplines, the essays collected here under the distinguished editorial guidance of Stephen Greenblatt share the conviction that cultures, even traditional cultures, are rarely stable or fixed. Radical mobility is not a phenomenon of the twenty-first century alone, but is a key constituent element of human life in virtually all periods. Yet academic accounts of culture tend to operate on exactly the opposite assumption and to celebrate what they imagine to be rooted or whole or undamaged. To grasp the shaping power of colonization, exile, emigration, wandering, contamination, and unexpected, random events, along with the fierce compulsions of greed, longing, and restlessness, cultural analysis needs to operate with a new set of principles. An international group of authors spells out these principles and puts them into practice
