Parallel Title: Erscheint auch als Wang, Li The road to privatization of higher education in China
Keywords: Education, Higher ; Education ; Education ; Education, Higher ; Hochschule ; Privatisierung ; China
Abstract: This book makes both empirical and conceptual contributions to the debate on privatization of higher education in China. Empirically, it aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of privatization of higher education in North China. To this end, Beijing was chosen as a case for analysis, and nine local higher educational institutions were visited. The case study strategy is also complemented by an extensive review of national policies to reveal problems beyond the specific case of Beijing and of national concern. The effects of the cultural and socioeconomic background and the unique state-party controlling system on higher education management are stressed. Conceptually, most existing studies on privatization of higher education in China adopt a policy analysis approach, while research on privatization of other public sectors or in other countries is frequently guided by economic theories. This book thus seeks to combine both social policy and econometric approaches to provide a systematic and detailed investigation of the privatization process in the context of higher education. It also improves examines the applicability of western theories in the Chinese context
Description / Table of Contents: IntroductionHigher education in China: local, national and global context -- Privatization of higher education: theoretical underpinnings -- Implementation of privatization: scale and scope -- Financing higher education: changing rationales for funding -- Control and regulation of higher education: innovated university governance -- Rethinking privatization of higher education in China: lessons and impacts -- References.

The book will bring together scholars with multiple perspectives on the topic to create dialogue around similarities and differences. This book will appeal to students, scholars, and higher educational administrators in both countries and other countries as well who are seeking to understand the strategic change in higher education in both China and the US

Abstract: This study explores the process of curriculum innovation-the Yuanpei Program, which is intended to provide general education at Peking University and offers key insights in terms of theory and practice. First, it contributes to development of the understanding of curriculum innovation and the enrichment of knowledge on general education, its principles and practice in China. More specifically, it enriches the literature on the curriculum reform in higher education by describing the complexity of the process in the Chinese context. The conflict approach to examining the curriculum change has allowed the author to better understand the difficulty and constraints involved in the innovation. Many studies conducted before tend not to focus on conflicts and constraints in a systematic way, thus leaving many aspects to be investigated. The data on general education reforms practices obtained from the study will expand the understanding of general education reforms in the Mainland context. Second, this study will provide a valuable reference work on reforms in higher education in China. The general education reforms, though conducted at several universities, are still in the trial stage. The lessons learned from the study illustrate what kinds of conflicts and problems might arise, supporting practitioners by addressing sources of conflicts that could be avoided or effectively defused

Abstract: This book addresses two main questions, namely how to prepare high-quality teachers in the 21st century and how the East and the West can learn from each other. It addresses the different challenges and dilemmas that eastern countries, especially China, and western countries are facing with regard to teacher education. We explore the question by examining teacher education research, practice and policy in different countries, identifying both common problems and country-specific challenges. We then try to find valuable experiences, theories and practice which can solve specific problems in the process of teacher education, also addressing how local and global factors impact it. In this regard, our approach does not strictly separate pre-service teacher education from teachers’ in-service professional development, adopting an integrative perspective. Further, we believe the respective social and cultural contexts must also be taken into account. Lastly, we call for teachers’ knowledge and individual character traits to be accounted for in the education of high-quality teachers

Abstract: G20 members bring together the world’s major advanced and emerging economies, as well as the European Union. Together they represent some 90% of global GDP, 80% of global trade and two-thirds of the world’s population. In recognition of educational development as a key driver of economic development, the G20 members have put education reform high on their policy agenda in order to meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities ahead. Their experience and lessons learnt in education reform will not only showcase the global trend of education development, but also will provide a valuable reference and inspiration for undertaking education reform to advance national development in China as well as other countries. This book documents recent policy reform in G20 members’ systems, showcases the global trends in education policy, serves as a valuable reference tool and also provides inspiration for undertaking education reform to advance development in related countries
