Abstract: Introduction: thinking brown and trans together -- Dolorous proximities of race and transsexuality: reading the Gwen Araujo archive -- Examining transphobic violence and the politics of valuation: the death of Angie Zapata and the incarceration of the hateful other -- Fleshing out the Chicana/x butch and Chicano/x FTM borderlands -- The wound makes the man: trans figuring Chicano masculinities -- Coda: reading with the x.
Abstract: "Arguing that brown transgender narratives are frequently silenced and erased in US queer, transgender, and Latinx and Chicanx cultural politics, Galarte considers the contexts in which these narratives appear; how they circulate; and how they are reproduced in politics, sexual cultures, and racialized economies. Seeking to restore personhood and agency to these subjects, Francisco J. Galarte advances "brown trans figuration" as a theoretical framework to describe how transness and brownness coexist within the larger queer, trans, and Latinx historical experiences"--

Abstract: "After the Muslim conquest of Iran in the 7th century, devoted Zoroastrians emigrated to India, where the growing community came to be known as Parsis. This Parsi settlement had increasingly little contact with Iran over the succeeding centuries until the 19th century, when a romanticized notion of their ancestral homeland led them to reestablish contact with Iran and the remaining Zoroastrians there. The Parsis had thrived under British rule of India and so they were able to strengthen their ties to Iran with philanthropic work. Meanwhile, Iranians were coming to romanticize their own ancient history and saw the Parsis as a living embodiment of this history. The Iranian neo-classicism of the 20th century that helped to establish a sense of Iranian national identity is usually ascribed to European contact, but Marashi argues that this growing relationship with the Parsi community was an important element that influenced the development of modern-day Iran"--

Abstract: Growing up beside the Chisholm Trail, captivated by the songs of passing cowboys and his friend Nat Blythe, an African American farmhand, John A. Lomax developed a passion for American folk songs that ultimately made him one of the foremost authorities on this fundamental aspect of Americana. Across many decades and throughout the country, Lomax and his informants created over five thousand recordings of America's musical heritage, including ballads, blues, children's songs, fiddle tunes, field hollers, lullabies, play-party songs, religious dramas, spirituals, and work songs. He acted as honorary curator of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress, directed the Slave Narrative Project of the WPA, and cofounded the Texas Folklore Society. Lomax's books include Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, American Ballads and Folk Songs, Negro Folk Songs as Sung by Leadbelly, and Our Singing Country, the last three coauthored with his son Alan Lomax. Adventures of a Ballad Hunter is a memoir of Lomax's eventful life. It recalls his early years and the fruitful decades he spent on the road collecting folk songs, on his own and later with son Alan and second wife Ruby Terrill Lomax. Vibrant, amusing, often haunting stories of the people he met and recorded are the gems of this book, which also gives lyrics for dozens of songs. Adventures of a Ballad Hunter illuminates vital traditions in American popular culture and the labor that has gone into their preservation

Abstract: This book is a fascinating story of two women from radically different backgrounds becoming equal witnesses to each other's lives. Sugar Turner describes all aspects of her life in the "hood" to the white anthropologist who is conducting research. All her life, Sugar Turner has had to hustle to survive. An African American woman living in the inner city, she has been a single mother juggling welfare checks, food stamps, boyfriends and husbands, illegal jobs, and home businesses to make ends meet for herself and her five children. Her life's path has also wandered through the wilderness of crack addiction and prostitution, but her strong faith in God and her willingness to work hard for a better life pulled her through. Today, Turner is off welfare and is completing her education. She is computer literate, holds a job in the local school system, has sent three of her children to college, and is happily married. In this engrossing book, Sugar Turner collaborates with anthropologist Tracy Bachrach Ehlers in telling her story. Through conversations with Ehlers, diary entries, and letters, Turner vividly and openly describes all aspects of her life, including motherhood, relationships with men, welfare and work, and her attachment to her friends, family, and life in the "hood." Ehlers also gives her reactions to Turner's story, discussing not only how it belies the "welfare queen" stereotype, but also how it forced her to confront her own lingering confusions about race, her own bigotry. What emerges from this book is a fascinating story of two women from radically different backgrounds becoming equal witnesses to each other's lives. By allowing us into the real world of an inner-city African American mother, they replace with compassion and insight the stereotypes, half-truths, and scorn that too often dominate public discourse.
