    Abstract: 1959 entstanden mit Dave Brubecks "Time Out", John Coltranes "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" und Ornette Colemans "The Shape of Jazz to Come" stilprägende Alben, die für die weitere Entwicklung des Jazz wegweisend waren. In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

    Abstract: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries

    Abstract: Trouble Songs is a hybrid serial work that tracks the appearance of the word "trouble" in 20th- and 21st-century American music. It reads (and sings) songs and poems, with reference to cultural events ranging from the death of a pop singer to the growth of popular resistance movements. The trouble singer invokes the word "trouble" in place of actual trouble--the song is a spell that conjures trouble (from bad luck and disaffection to infidelity, impotence, destitution, and the specter of death) in a temporary form that can be dis-spelled, if only for the length of the song. Singer and song also open a critical space for making trouble, for stirring the heart and mind. This space is a disjunction in time (and a superimposition of events) where singer and listener collaborate on meaning (un/)making as they temporarily transform trouble.

Spannend und unterhaltend zeigt er, wie es gelang, eine neue Sprache und eine neue Leichtigkeit zu erschaffen, was die Erfolge der letzten Jahre erst ermöglichte. Manfred Prescher wurde 1961 direkt auf der Stadtgrenze von Nürnberg und Fürth geboren, mit dem Schreiben begann er kurz darauf. Er arbeitet für diverse Medien und leitet eine PR-Agentur. Seine Leidenschaft für Musik pflegt er auch als Radiomoderator und als Buchautor.

    Abstract: The role of folk music, broadly defined, during the trying years of the Great Depression in the United States, 1929–40, with a particular focus on the role of left-wing political groups and individuals. The government promoted a labor and cultural renaissance through the "alphabet stew" of federal programs, employing Charles Seeger, John and Alan Lomax, and numerous others in collecting folk music. Performers such as Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Pete Seeger, and many others connected vernacular music with commercial outlets such as concerts, record companies, and radio shows. Members of the Communist Party, in particular, used folk music to promote labor unions, civil rights, and a peace movement. Folk music remained a vital part of popular culture throughout the Depression years into World War II. There is a particular focus on the role that folk music played in the clash between capitalism and the emerging grassroots proletarian movements

    Abstract: Das Design und die Entzifferung des Urbanen vollziehen sich zugleich auf multiplen Ebenen sozialer Konfigurationen und künstlerischer Wahrnehmung. Stadt ist somit way of life, Projektionsfläche, Image und imaginärer Lebensraum, der seit dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eines der zentralen programmatischen Motive in Literatur, Malerei, Film und Musik bildet. Im Zentrum dieses Bandes stehen ausdrücklich musikalische Deutungen. Die Beiträge geben Einblick in die Vielfältigkeit künstlerischer Stadterfindungen und untersuchen anhand unterschiedlicher Metropolen-Porträts differenzierte Reaktionen auf das Städtische, Optiken und Ausdrucksformen sowie die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart urbaner Imaginationen.
    Abstract: The design and deciphering of the urban take place at multiple levels of social configurations and artistic perceptions simultaneously. The city has thus served as way of life, projection, image, and imaginary habitat, which has shaped one of the key programmatic themes in literature, painting, film, and music since the 19th and 20 centuries. Expressly musical interpretations are central to this volume. The articles provide insight into the diversity of artistic urban inventions and examine them on the basis of different cities - portraits of differentiated reactions to the municipal, scope, and forms of expression as well as past and present urban imaginations.

    Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: Noisy, confrontational, and controversial, industrial music first emerged in the mid-1970s around bands and performance groups who combined avant-garde electronic music with the provocative attitude and style of punk rock. In its early days, bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire produced a genuinely radical form of music bent on recontextualizing the signs and methods of cultural authority in an attempt to liberate listeners from the trappings of modernity. But, as industrial music took on more and more elements of popular music over the course of the 1980s it slowly abandoned its mission. By the mid-1990s, it was seen as simply another style of pop music, and had ironically fallen into the trappings it sought by its very existence to destroy. In "Assimilate", S. Alexander Reed provides the first ever critical history of this fascinating and enigmatic genre tracing industrial music's trajectory from Throbbing Gristle's founding of the record label Industrial Music in 1976, to its peak in popularity on the back of the band Nine Inch Nails in the mid-1990s, and through its decline to the present day. Through a series of revealing explorations of works spanning the entirety of industrial music's past, and drawing on extensive interviews with musicians, record label owners, DJs, and concert promoters, Reed paints a thorough historical picture that includes not only the bands, but the structures that supported them, and the scenes they created. In so doing, he reveals an engaging story of an ideological disintegration and its aftermath.     Abstract: David Conway analyses why and how Jews, virtually absent from Western art music until the end of the eighteenth century, came to be represented in all branches of the profession within fifty years as leading figures – not only as composers and performers, but as publishers, impresarios and critics. His study places this process in the context of dynamic economic, political, sociological and technological changes and also of developments in Jewish communities and the Jewish religion itself, in the major cultural centres of Western Europe. Beginning with a review of attitudes to Jews in the arts and an assessment of Jewish music and musical skills, in the age of the Enlightenment, Conway traces the story of growing Jewish involvement with music through the biographies of the famous, the neglected and the forgotten, leading to a new and radical contextualisation of Wagner's infamous 'Judaism in Music'.

    Abstract: Die Bedeutung von Tradition in den Alltagskulturen der Gegenwart unterliegt einem markanten Wandel. Unter dem Einfluss von Globalisierungsprozessen und dem Innovationsdruck der modernen Popkultur sinken die kulturellen Zugangsschwellen zu traditionalen Phänomenen. Tradition wird fluide und erfährt so eine Revitalisierung in den unterschiedlichsten populärkulturellen Medien.Am Beispiel der zentralen europäischen Traditionsfigur des Teufels zeichnet diese Studie den fundamentalen Wandel nach, den Satan, Mephisto, Luzifer durch den Transfer in das popkulturelle Medium Rockmusik vollzogen hat. Auf der methodischen Grundlage einer Analyse popularer Medientexte entwickelt sich so eine spannende und materialreiche Geschichte des Diabolischen in der Rockmusik von den „Teufelspakten“ des Delta Blues über das Spiel mit populärer Religiosität der Beatles bis zu den satanistischen Black-Metal-Szenen der modernen Heavy-Metal-Kultur. Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr der Rekurs auf den Teufel stets von zeit- und gruppenspezifischen kulturellen Bedürfnissen gelenkt wird. Das Traditionale bleibt stets auch das Aktuelle. Es bildet eine wichtige Zukunftsoption innerhalb der reflexiven Moderne.

    Abstract: Building on their studies of sixties culture and theory of cognitive praxis, Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison examine the mobilization of cultural traditions and formulation of new collective identities through the music of activism.
