Unter Berufung auf die universalen Menschenrechte fordern BDS-Akteure einen umfassenden Boykott des jüdischen Staats. Gleichzeitig wird die Bewegung oft als antisemitisch klassifiziert, was zu der Frage führt: Können Antisemitismen auch im Namen der Menschenrechte formuliert werden? Natascha Müller nimmt sich diesem Komplex an und untersucht, wie »menschenrechtsorientierte Antisemitismen« weltweit für den BDS-Diskurs mobilisieren.     Abstract: Blick ins Buch In Europa tritt verstärkt ein "neuer antizionistischer Antisemitismus" auf. Mit dem Verblassen der Erinnerung an die Shoah, Sekundärantisemitismus und dem Glauben an ein geeintes Europa, das nationalstaatliche Denkweisen überwindet, findet sich ein zunehmend kritisches Denken gegenüber dem Zionismus. Israel wird zum "Juden unter den Völkern". Antisemitische Kritik am Staat Israel kommt aus verschiedenen Richtungen: von rechts (Rassismus), links (Kapitalismuskritik und Antizionismus) und vom politischen Islam (Übernahme antijüdischer Polemik aus religiösen Schriften). Diese Mischung zeigt sich in sogenannten "Cultural Codes", in Form von teils christlich, teils muslimisch geprägten Motiven, die jedoch einen antisemitischen Hintergrund haben. "Auge um Auge, Zahn um Zahn", "Rache" oder "Wallstreet" sind solche codierten Schlagwörter, die sich regelmäßig auch in deutschsprachigen Medien finden. Raimund Fastenbauer vergleicht erstmals die Verwendung solcher antisemitischen Motive im Internet und anderen Medien islamisch geprägter Länder mit jenen in deutschsprachigen Printmedien und weist so den starken Einfluss nach, den diese "Codes" in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung haben

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Van den Breemer’s fascinating study of the religious governance of cemeteries by secular state institutions proves that cemeteries have become a privileged site to observe empirically the various ways in which the dual accommodation of religious-secular and multi-religious diversity takes place in today’s post-secular Western European societies.     Abstract: Die Europa-Idee, die in den Nachkriegsjahren wirksam war, ist heute verdunstet. Diese Idee war stark geprägt vom Christentum, dem der alte Kontinent seine geistige Einheit verdankt. Die Institutionen des Christentums sind dabei konkurrierenden Interessen ihrer Mitglieder ausgesetzt, verlieren deren Zustimmung in unterschiedlicher Weise und haben das konfliktträchtige Potential ihrer konfessionellen Vielfalt noch nicht ganz überwunden. Daneben haben sogenannte fundamentalistische Richtungen innerhalb traditioneller Weltreligionen – in Europa außer dem Christentum auch das Judentum und der Islam – regen Zulauf. Der Band hinterfragt die traditionelle Rolle religiöser Werte für die Union, ihre Transformation in der Geschichte und behandelt ihre Gegenwart und Zukunft. Letzteres tut er zum einen mit Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Zugehörigkeit des Islam zu Europa – in seiner gegenwärtigen Präsenz als auch in seinem historisch-kulturellen und philosophischen Einfluss –, zum anderen im Vergleich zwischen der (in sich noch unterschiedlichen) europäischen Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Religion und Staat und anderer westlicher Staaten, namentlich den USA

    Abstract: Der gerechte Frieden steht für einen fundamentalen Wandel in der ethischen Praxis: Nicht mehr der Krieg, sondern der Frieden in seiner wechselseitigen Bezogenheit zur Gerechtigkeit bildet den Fokus des neuen Konzeptes. Dennoch bleibt auch für den gerechten Frieden die Frage der Anwendung von Waffengewalt von zentraler Bedeutung.Ines-Jacqueline Werkner zeigt: Der aktuelle Diskurs um die internationale Schutzverantwortung und der damit verbundene Zielkonflikt zwischen dem Schutz bedrohter Menschen und der angestrebten Gewaltfreiheit lassen Widersprüche und Kontroversen offen zutage treten. Auch die ökumenische Debatte um den gerechten Frieden ist in hohem Maße von kirchlichen Divergenzen geprägt.
    Abstract: Just peace stands for a fundamental change of applied ethics: The focus of this new concept is no longer on war but rather on peace in its mutual relatedness to justice. Yet the question of using armed force remains to be of central importance even for just peace. Ines-Jacqueline Werkner shows: The current discourse on the international responsibility to provide protection and the conflict between the protection of humans in danger and the nonviolence envisaged that goes with it reveal contradictions and controversies. Even the ecumenical debate about just peace is significantly shaped by ecclesiastical divergences.

    Abstract: "'Reshaping the Boundaries: The Christian Intersection of China and the West in the Modern Era' brings new material and new insight to deepen our understanding of the multilayered, two-way flow of words, beliefs, and experiences between the West and China from 1600 to 1900. The seven essays taken together illustrate the complex reality of boundary-crossing interactions between these cultures and document how hybrid ideas, images, and identities emerged in both China and the West.     Abstract: Der Islam gilt seit dem 11. September 2001 vielfach als eine gewalttätige Religion. Das fordert dazu heraus, sich mit dem kulturellen und religiösen Erbe des Islam gründlicher zu befassen. Die Autoren beschreiben eine im Westen weitgehend unbekannte Seite des Islam, die sich durch den Glauben, das Recht und den frühen Fortschrittsglauben der muslimischen Gelehrten entfalten konnte. Trotz des Niederganges der islamischen Rechtsprechung, der schari'a, und der Verhärtung des Glaubens hat sich die traditionelle Toleranz des Islam anderen Religionen gegenüber, erhalten. Moderne islamische Theologen treten für Gewaltlosigkeit ein.     Abstract: The book challenges the popular notion of a clash of cultures pitting Muslim and non-Muslim Europeans against one another. The study finds instead vehement conflict among three longstanding European public philosophies: liberalism, nationalism, and postmodernism. The consequential differences of outlook are demonstrated in four policy areas: 1) citizenship requirements, 2) the headscarf debate, 3) mosque-state relations and 4) counter-terrorism. The book reaches three important conclusions. First, Muslim Europeans do not represent a monolithic anti-Western bloc -- a Trojan Horse -- within Europe. They vehemently disagree among themselves but along the same basic liberal, nationalist, and postmodern contours as non-Muslim Europeans. Second, ideological discord significantly contributes to policy “messiness,” that is, to inconsistent, contradictory policies. Third, both the discord and the messiness are remarkably similar from one European country to the next, thereby casting doubt on the dominant theory in comparative migration studies that posits distinct national styles such as French republicanism, German ethno-nationalism and British multiculturalism.

    Abstract: "This volume highlights the ways in which the prospect of peace can generate anxieties and consequently set in motion social and political processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts. In analysing this issue, the volume builds on the notion of ontological security and its recent applications to international relations theory. Although conflicts threaten the physical security of the parties involved, they also help settle existential questions about basic parameters of life, being, and identity, and thus over time become sources of ontological security. The prospect of peace, through the resolution or transformation of conflict, threatens to unsettle the stability and consistency of self-narratives, and their associated routines and habits at the individual, group, and state levels.The contributors argue two key points: 1) that ontological insecurity may set in motion political and social processes that reproduce and reactivate conflicts; 2) that coping with peace anxieties necessitates the formulation of alternative self-narratives at the individual, societal, and state levels that re-situate the Self in relation to Other and to the world at large. Consequently, the book analyses the ways in which, and the conditions under which, conflict resolution induces ontological insecurity, and the different ways in which ontological insecurity has prevented the successful culmination of peace processes in different conflict contexts, including Cyprus, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, social theory and IR in general"..

    Abstract: Muslim Belonging in Secular India surveys the experience of some of India's most prominent Muslim communities in the early postcolonial period. Muslims who remained in India after the Partition of 1947 faced distrust and discrimination, and were consequently compelled to seek new ways of defining their relationship with fellow citizens of India and its governments. Using the forcible integration of the princely state of Hyderabad in 1948 as a case study, Taylor C. Sherman reveals the fragile and contested nature of Muslim belonging in the decade that followed independence. In this context, she demonstrates how Muslim claims to citizenship in Hyderabad contributed to intense debates over the nature of democracy and secularism in independent India. Drawing on detailed new archival research, Dr Sherman provides a thorough and compelling examination of the early governmental policies and popular strategies that have helped to shape the history of Muslims in India since 1947

Diese Strukturen bilden ein heterogenes Netz aus diskursiven und nicht-diskursiven Elementen.Aus unterschiedlichen fachwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven untersuchen die Beiträge des Bandes diese Dispositive und zeigen ihre Wirkmächtigkeit für die kollektive Identität der Muslime in verschiedenen Ländern Europas auf.

    Abstract: In den bisherigen Forschungen zu »muslimischen« Denkerinnen und Denkern sind die dichotomisch verwendeten Begriffe »Moderne« und »Islam« zentral. Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: The headscarf is an increasingly contentious symbol in countries across the world. Those who don the headscarf in Germany are referred to as ""integration-refusers."" In Turkey, support by and for headscarf-wearing women allowed a religious party to gain political power in a strictly secular state. A niqab-wearing Muslim woman was denied French citizenship for not conforming to national values.     Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.

    Abstract: Conspicuously, Islam has become a key concern in most European societies with respect to issues of immigration, integration, identity, values and inland security. As the mere presence of Muslim minorities fails to explain these debates convincingly, new questions need to be asked: How did »Islam« become a topic? Who takes part in the debates? How do these debates influence both individual as well as collective »self-images« and »image of others«? Introducing Switzerland as an under-researched object of study to the academic discourse on Islam in Europe, this volume offers a fresh perspective on the objective by putting recent case studies from diverse national contexts into comparative perspective.

    Abstract: Religion is back again in Europe after never having been gone. It is manifest in the revival of religious institutions and traditions in former communist countries, in political controversies about the relationship between the church(es) and the state and about the freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize religion, and in public unease about religious minorities.     Abstract: Heated debates about Muslim women's veiling practices have regularly attracted the attention of European policymakers over the last decade. The headscarf has been both vehemently contested by national and/or regional governments, political parties and public intellectuals and passionately defended by veil wearing women and their supporters. Systematically applying a comparative perspective, this book addresses the question of why the headscarf tantalises and causes such controversy over issues about religious pluralism, secularism, neutrality of the state, gender oppression, citizenship, migration, and multiculturalism.Seeking also to establish why the issue has become part of the disciplinary practices of some European countries but not of others, this work brings together an important collection of interpretative research regarding the current debates on the veil in Europe, offering an interdisciplinary scope and European-wide setting. Brought together through a common research methodology, the contributors focus on the different religious, political and cultural meanings of the veiling issue across eight countries and develop a comparative explanation of veiling regimes. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of religion & politics, gender studies and multiculturalism

    Abstract: From the 6th to 11th centuries, the prohibition of marriage between relatives (incest) often headed the agenda of legislative assemblies and can be seen as a key topic of this age. The reasons for this unique development have occupied ethnologists, sociologists and historians for quite some time. This book is the first to trace the radical expansion of marriage prohibitions across epochs and advances the thesis that this development came about as a result of the decline of power in Antiquity and the changing functions of legislation.     Abstract: Das Verbot von Verwandtenehen (Inzest) stand vom 6. bis ins 11. Jahrhundert im Mittelpunkt der Gesetzgebung. Kaiser und Könige, Bischöfe und Päpste erließen immer wieder neue Regelungen zum Inzestdelikt und stellten diese Bestimmungen häufig an die Spitze von Gesetzestexten und Kodifikationen. Die Reichweite der verbotenen Verwandten wurde dabei stetig ausgedehnt. Im 11. Jahrhundert war es kaum möglich, Ehen zu schließen, die nicht aufgrund des Inzestverbots angefochten werden konnten. Die Sorge um die Gültigkeit von Eheschließungen beschäftigte insbesondere den Adel, da mit der Illegitimität der Kinder der soziale Status auf das Spiel gesetzt wurde.Über dieses einzigartige Phänomen wird in der historischen, ethnologischen und soziologischen Forschung eine intensive Diskussion geführt. Dieses Buch zeichnet die radikale Ausdehnung der Ehehindernisse erstmals epochenübergreifend und transkulturell nach. Es wird die These aufgestellt, dass die Entstehungsbedingungen dieser „Obsession“ im Funktionswandel von Gesetzgebung und in den Reaktionen von Königen, Kaisern und Bischöfen auf den Verlust antiker Staatlichkeit zu suchen sind. Die ausgedehnten Inzestverbote sollten die Etablierung überregionaler Heiratsmärkte herbeiführen und dadurch der Integration von Großreichen dienen.

    Abstract: Eliz Sanasarian's book explores the political and ideological relationship between non-Muslim religious minorities in Iran and the state during the formative years of the Islamic Republic to the present day. Her analysis is based on a detailed examination of the history and experiences of the Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Jews, Zoroastrians, Bahais and Iranian Christians, and describes how these communities have responded to state policies regarding minorities. Many of her findings are constructed out of personal interviews with members of these communities. While the book is essentially an empirical study, it also highlights more general questions associated with exclusion and marginalization and the role of the state in defining these boundaries. This is an important and original book which will make a significant contribution to the literature on minorities and to the workings of the Islamic Republic

    Abstract: In this book, Julia Ching offers a magisterial survey of over four thousand years of Chinese civilisation through an examination of the relationship between kingship and mysticism. She investigates the sage-king myth and ideal, arguing that institutions of kingship were bound up with cultivation of trance states and communication with spirits. Over time, these associations were retained, though sidelined, as the sage-king myth became a model for the actual ruler, with a messianic appeal for the ruled. As a paradigm, it also became appropriated by private individuals who strove for wisdom without becoming kings. As the Confucian tradition interacted with the Taoist and the Buddhist, the religious character of spiritual and mystical cultivation became more pronounced. But the sage-king idea continued, promoting expectations of benevolent despotism rather than democratisation in Chinese civilisation
