    Abstract: Die eigene Zeit als Kolonialmacht sei im Vergleich mit Ländern wie Frankreich oder Großbritannien kurz und relativ unproblematisch gewesen: So sah man es hierzulande lange. Doch das war ein Irrtum. Heute steht die deutsche koloniale Vergangenheit zu Recht im Zentrum kontrovers geführter Debatten über das koloniale Erbe in einer globalen Welt. Dieses Buch beleuchtet mit dem Auswärtigen Amt einen zentralen Akteur des deutschen Kolonialismus und spannt den Bogen vom Deutschen Kaiserreich bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Dabei richtet sich der Blick nicht nur auf Deutschland, sondern auch in die betroffenen Gesellschaften Afrikas, Asiens und Ozeaniens. Mit dem Versailler Vertrag von 1919 endete die formale deutsche Kolonialherrschaft. Doch koloniales Denken lebte in der Mitte der deutschen Ge sellschaft fort - so auch im Auswärtigen Amt, dem eine Mitverantwortung für Gewalt und Verbrechen in den deutschen Kolonien zukommt. Die Folgen seines Handelns sind noch bis in unsere Gegenwart spürbar. In der Zeit der NS-Diktatur verbanden sich nationalkonservative, monarchistische und antirepublikanische Haltungen im Auswärtigen Amt mit den expansionistischen und rassistischen Zielen des Nationalsozialismus. Ab 1949 prägten Indifferenz und Ignoranz, Passivität und Relativierung die bundesdeutsche Politik gegenüber den ehemaligen Kolonien im globalen Süden. Heute ist das Amt maßgeblich an Verhandlungen über Restitution und Wiedergutmachung beteiligt. Zudem wird es von einer diverser gewordenen deutschen Gesellschaft mit Fragen zur kolonialen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Aus Gründen der historischen Gerechtigkeit, aber auch angesichts einer veränderten Weltlage muss sich das Amt seiner eigenen Kolonialgeschichte stellen

    Abstract: The study provides an extensive legal, geopolitical and historical analysis of all controversial issues making up the Greek-Turkish maritime dispute: the delimitation of territorial waters, the national airspace, the delineation of exclusive economic zones and continental shelf as well as the issue of military presence on the Eastern Aegean islands and its relation to the Greek sovereignty over them. By immersing thoroughly into international jurisprudence, international treaties and historical facts, the book offers a detailed survey of legal precedents and legal regimes over similar issues worldwide. In this way, the reader has the opportunity to ascertain where every single legal and historical argument has been drawn from and its relevance in the international jurisprudence. Consequently, it follows the evolution of the dispute together with all its twists from 1973 to 2022 that saw a new low in the historically tense Greek-Turkish relationship. The book finally re-examines the dispute in the light of the new green energy geopolitics and the ongoing climate crisis and comes up with some suggestions for an alternative paradigm of co-existence in the Aegean Sea which in the author’s view is urgent and inevitable. .

    Abstract: "Campaigns against prostitution of young people in the United States have surged and ebbed multiple times over the last fifty years. Fighting the U.S. Youth Sex Trade: Race, Gender, and Politics examines how politically and ideologically diverse activists joined together to change perceptions and public policies on youth involvement in the sex trade over time, reframing "juvenile prostitution" of the 1970s as "commercial sexual exploitation of children" in the 1990s, and then as "domestic minor sex trafficking" in the 2000s. Based on organizational archives and interviews with activists, Baker shows that these campaigns were fundamentally shaped by the politics of gender, race and class, and global anti-trafficking campaigns. The author argues that the very frames that have made these movements so successful in achieving new laws and programs for youth have limited their ability to achieve systematic reforms that could decrease youth vulnerability to involvement in the sex trade"--

    Abstract: Memory is as central to modern politics as politics is central to modern memory. We are so accustomed to living in a forest of monuments, to having the past represented to us through museums, historic sites, and public sculpture, that we easily lose sight of the recent origins and diverse meanings of these uniquely modern phenomena. In this volume, leading historians, anthropologists, and ethnographers explore the relationship between collective memory and national identity in diverse cultures throughout history. Placing commemorations in their historical settings, the contributors disclose the contested nature of these monuments by showing how groups and individuals struggle to shape the past to their own ends. The volume is introduced by John Gillis's broad overview of the development of public memory in relation to the history of the nation-state.     Abstract: "Campaigns against prostitution of young people in the United States have surged and ebbed multiple times over the last fifty years. Fighting the U.S. Youth Sex Trade: Race, Gender, and Politics examines how politically and ideologically diverse activists joined together to change perceptions and public policies on youth involvement in the sex trade over time, reframing "juvenile prostitution" of the 1970s as "commercial sexual exploitation of children" in the 1990s, and then as "domestic minor sex trafficking" in the 2000s. Based on organizational archives and interviews with activists, Baker shows that these campaigns were fundamentally shaped by the politics of gender, race and class, and global anti-trafficking campaigns. The author argues that the very frames that have made these movements so successful in achieving new laws and programs for youth have limited their ability to achieve systematic reforms that could decrease youth vulnerability to involvement in the sex trade"--

Every year, over 1.3 million people apply to visit, work, or settle in Canada and discover that their future rests in visa officers' hands. How do these officers decide who gets in?     Abstract: Die Teilhabe am Herrschaftsprozess ist für demokratische Gesellschaften von zentraler Bedeutung. Staat und Gesellschaft müssen miteinander verknüpft sein, sonst gerät die Legitimation politischer Entscheidungen in Gefahr. Die politische Teilhabe – etwa in Wahlen und Parteien – ist in Deutschland aber eng an die Staatsbürgerschaft geknüpft. Ausländer im rechtlichen Sinne dürfen nicht an allen politischen Entscheidungen mitwirken. Unter den Bedingungen einer fortschreitenden europäischen Integration und einer empirisch evidenten Zuwanderungsgesellschaft stellt sich daher die Frage, wie es um die Legitimation politischer Entscheidungen und um die politisch-demokratische Repräsentation derjenigen bestellt ist, die zwar in Deutschland wohnen, aber de jure nur eingeschränkte Teilhaberechte haben.     Abstract: Da die beiden Begriffe „Kultur“ und „Staat“ über eine große inhaltliche Breite verfügen, ist das Feld der Interpretationsmöglichkeiten außerordentlich weit. Wichtiger als der quantitative Umfang der Begriffe aber ist selbstverständlich deren qualitative Bedeutung: Sowohl vom Begriff der Kultur als auch vom Begriff des Staates lässt sich sagen, dass sie im eigentlichen Wortsinne fundamental sind. Sie legen das Fundament für das Zusammenleben der Menschen – mit Kultur ist dabei die (oft unsichtbare und doch überall wirksame) Totalität menschlicher Hervorbringungen gemeint, mit Staat die institutionelle Grundordnung einer Gemeinschaft, welche die wichtigsten Regeln der Herrschaft in einem bestimmten Territorium verbindlich festschreibt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Kultur und Staat, genauer: Die Abhängigkeit des Staates von der Kultur, ist offensichtlich: Staaten sind immer auch Ausdruck kultureller Werte und Ideale. Ein besonderes Kulturverständnis schlägt sich in aller Regel auch in einem besonderen Staatsverständnis nieder; dabei erweisen sich die primär ideellen Werte einer Kultur häufig sogar als prioritär gegenüber ihrer materiellen Verwirklichung in Institutionen. In jedem Fall gilt, dass beide, Staat und Kultur, aufs Engste miteinander verzahnt und ineinander verwoben sind. Wie dies von großen (Kultur-)Theoretikern des 20.     Abstract: Nation, Staatsbürgerschaft und Multikulturalismus sind zentrale Themen in den öffentlichen Debatten in der Türkei. Eran Gündüz zeichnet die Genese des türkischen Nationalstaats nach und beleuchtet die jüngeren Debatten um die Inklusion von ethno-kulturellen Gruppen. Dabei nutzt er den Ansatz des kanadischen Sozialtheoretikers Will Kymlicka, um die Anwendbarkeit eines westlichen Modells von multikultureller Gesellschaft auf den türkischen Fall zu begründen. Die Studie zeigt die Gründe auf, die eine demokratisch verfasste multikulturelle Gesellschaft in der Türkei zurzeit fast unmöglich zu machen scheinen.

    Abstract: Die Beschwörung einer »Leitkultur« und die Warnungen vor den Gefahren einer Parallelgesellschaft sind für die Integration von Migranten mehr hinderlich als befördernd. Werner Schiffauer plädiert mit diesem Buch dagegen für einen neuen Realismus, für eine Kultur des genauen Hinsehens. Mit Blick auf die Lebensrealität in Einwanderervierteln und islamischen Gemeinden zeigt er, wie gesellschaftliche Solidarität auch in Situationen kultureller Differenz entstehen und behauptet werden kann. Es sind weniger gemeinsame Werte und Überzeugungen, die für den inneren Zusammenhalt einer Gesellschaft entscheidend sind, als vielmehr die Aufrechterhaltung von kulturellen Austauschprozessen. Mehr denn je ist daher eine kluge Politik der Differenz gefragt, die auf Anerkennung und kommunikative Einbindung setzt statt auf Eindeutigkeitszwänge.     Abstract: Wie können irreguläre Migranten und Migrantinnen ihre Interessen vertreten, obgleich ihre Einreise und ihr Aufenthalt als unerwünscht gelten? Die Studie zeichnet die Spuren von Protest, Organisierung und Lobbying in der EU nach. Dabei wird der Blick an die Grenzen Europas wie auch auf das lobbypolitische Zentrum Brüssel gelenkt. Die Studie zeigt auf, inwiefern sich auf europäischer Ebene überraschende und unkonventionelle Ansatzpunkte ergeben - nicht zuletzt durch geschlechterpolitische Allianzen und eigensinnige Praxen der Migrierenden.     Abstract: A new theory of ethnic cleansing based on the most terrible cases (colonial genocides, Armenia, the Nazi Holocaust, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, Rwanda) and cases of lesser violence (early modern Europe, contemporary India, and Indonesia). Murderous cleansing is modern, 'the dark side of democracy'. It results where the demos (democracy) is confused with the ethnos (the ethnic group). Danger arises where two rival ethno-national movements each claims 'its own' state over the same territory. Conflict escalates where either the weaker side fights because of aid from outside, or the stronger side believes it can deploy sudden, overwhelming force. Escalation is not simply the work of 'evil elites' or 'primitive peoples'. It results from complex interactions between leaders, militants, and 'core constituencies' of ethno-nationalism. Understanding this complex process helps us devise policies to avoid ethnic cleansing in the future
