Hanna Rettig hat als teilnehmende Beobachterin mit dem College gelebt, ist in verschiedene Länder mitgereist, hat Lernen und Missionieren ethnografisch begleitet. Ihre Analyse bietet neue Einblicke in evangelikales Leben und Missionieren in Deutschland und darüber hinaus.

    Abstract: "'Reshaping the Boundaries: The Christian Intersection of China and the West in the Modern Era' brings new material and new insight to deepen our understanding of the multilayered, two-way flow of words, beliefs, and experiences between the West and China from 1600 to 1900. The seven essays taken together illustrate the complex reality of boundary-crossing interactions between these cultures and document how hybrid ideas, images, and identities emerged in both China and the West. By focusing on 'in-betweenness, ' these essays challenge the existing Eurocentric assumption of a simple one-way cultural flow, with Western missionaries transmitting and the Chinese receiving. Led by Song Gang, the contributors to this volume cover many specific aspects of this cultural encounter that have received little or no scholarly attention: official decrees, memoirs, personal correspondences, news, rumors, musical instruments, and miracle stories.     Abstract: In Borrowed Place: Mission Stations and Local Adaption in Early Twentieth-Century Hunan Riika-Leena Juntunen creates a microhistorical narrative around the establishment, reception, and development of Lizhou protestant stations during the turbulent years of popular nationalism and early communist activity. The book examines the changing place identity around the stations from political, religious, ritual, cultural, and gendered perspectives, revealing a Chinese semi-religious community with varying motivations and in constant dialogue with its surroundings. The group developed its own normative code and hierarchy, and it offered both economic and religious benefits according to local models. Yet the developing political situation also meant it had to solve the question of anti-foreignism to be able to continue its existence

    Abstract: This volume brings together a range of critical studies that explore diverse ways in which processes of globalization pose new challenges and offer new opportunities for religious groups to propagate their beliefs in contemporary Asian contexts. Proselytizing tests the limits of religious pluralism, as it is a practice that exists on the border of tolerance and intolerance. The practice of proselytizing presupposes not only that people are freely-choosing agents and that religion itself is an issue of individual preference. At the same time, however, it also raises fraught questions about belonging to particular communties and heightens the moral stakes in involved in such choices. In many contemporary Asian societies, questions about the limits of acceptable proselytic behavior have taken on added urgency in the current era of globalization. Recognizing this, the studies brought together here serve to develop our uderstandings of current developments as it critically explores the complex ways in which contemporary contexts of religious pluralism in Asia both enable, and are threatened by, projects of proselytization

    Abstract: This volume looks at how religious identity and symbolic ethnicity influence migration. Religion - Christianity - was an important factor in European transatlantic migrations; religion - Islam - is a major issue in the immigration debate in "post-secular" Germany (and Europe) today.     Abstract: This volume lists and reproduces 328 photographs connected with the visitation by Carl Ihmels, Director of the Leipzig Mission, to Tanganyika in 1927. About 150 were taken in Tanganyika itself (mainly on the Leipzig Mission stations), a further 130 on the outward and homeward voyages (Southwest Africa, South Africa, Mozambique, Egypt); the remainder were sent to Ihmels later by Leipzig missionaries in Tanganyika. The volume is supplemented by an index and copies of reports on the visitation published in the Evangelisches-Lutherisches Missionsblatt.
