Abstract: 1.Setting the film studio stage -- 2. Cultures of innovation at Pinewood.-3. In the studio and on location 1 -- 4. In the studio and on location 2 -- 5. Managerial culture and labour relations at Pinewood -- 6. Cultural life at Pinewood -- 7. Anatomy of Pinewood in transition -- Bibliography.
Abstract: This open access book examines how Pinewood came to be Britain’s dominant film studio complex, focusing on key years following the Second World War. It presents a revisionist, micro history organized around key themes that are crucial to understanding the studios’ longevity during a particularly turbulent period. Pinewood’s survival at a time when other major film studios such as Denham closed, is explained. The book examines contemporary insights into how Pinewood’s technologies and practices compared to Hollywood’s when filmmaking methods were being scrutinized. Thirteen films produced in 1946-7 are analysed in detail, tracking how economic pressures engendered many creative techniques and innovative technologies. Prevailing cultures of management and labour organization are foregrounded, as well as insights into being a studio employee. These are vividly brought to life through an in-depth focus on the in-house studio magazine the Pinewood Merry-Go Round which provides rare details of sports and leisure activities organized at the studios. Sarah Street is Professor of Film at the University of Bristol. Publications include British National Cinema (1997), Transatlantic Crossings: British Feature Films in the USA (2002), Colour Films in Britain: The Negotiation of Innovation, 1900-55 (2012), Chromatic Modernity: Color, Cinema, and Media of the 1920s (2019, with Joshua Yumibe), and The Eastmancolor Revolution (2021, with Keith M. Abstract: This open access book examines how different economic systems impacted the development of East Germany and Poland. Through comparing these countries while they were centrally planned socialist economies with the periods when they transitioned to capitalism, the inability of socialist economies to modernize effectively and produce sustained economic growth is highlighted. Particular attention is given the role of technological progress in economic growth, peculiar institutions, the creation and transfer of knowledge, and post-socialist transformations. The book presents a detailed analysis of the barriers to modernization and growth implied by Soviet-type state socialism and the differences and similarities between the transition of East Germany and Poland to capitalist market economies. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in comparative systems and the political economy. Jutta Günther is Professor of Economics at the University of Bremen. Abstract: This book is considered as a monograph but also as a potential textbook for graduate students, focusing on the application of FCMs for modelling and analysing the behaviour of multicomponent systems. In the last two decades, no monograph or textbook has been published on the topic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM), so this new book is definitely filling a gap in the literature of computational intelligence. The book is built up didactically, the novel results in the field being presented in the way of starting with two real-life case studies, one in the area of waste management, while the other one in modelling bank management systems. In both cases, the book starts with explaining the applied problem and then presenting how the model construction is done and what problems emerge when attempts are made for applying directly earlier results on FCM modelling. In the first case study, the problem of the oversimplification leads to inadequacy of the model, and then it is shown how new, much finer models can be built up based on expert domain knowledge. Then, the new problem of losing transparency and interpretability emerges, and as a solution, a new algorithm family is proposed that reduces FCMs to fewer components, while preserving the essential characteristics of the original model. The second case study raises the problems of stability and sensitivity of FCMs, especially, considering that expert knowledge is often uncertain and subjective. The new results summarised in the book target the questions of how to ascertain whether an FCM is converging to one or several fixed point attractors, whether there is a bifurcation when parameters are changing, etc. Both problems deal with the ultimate question whether the system modelled is stable and sustainable.

Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. Fundamentals -- 3. Transparency Enhancement in Teleoperation -- 4. Multi-Agent Adaptive Shared Control -- 5. Stable and Transparent Shared Control Framework.
Abstract: Robotic research and developments in computing technologies including artificial intelligence have led to significant improvements in autonomous capabilities of robots. Yet, human supervision is advisable and, in many cases, necessary when robots interact with real-world, outside-lab environments. This is due to the fact that complete autonomy in robots has not yet been achieved. When robots encounter challenges beyond their capabilities, a viable solution is to include human operators in the loop, who can support robots through teleoperation, taking complete control or shared control. This monograph focuses on a special form of shared control, namely mixed-initiative, where the final command to the robot is a weighted sum of the commands from the operator and the autonomous controller. The weights (fixed or adaptive), called authority allocation (AA) factors, decide who has more control authority over the robot. Several research groups use different methods to adapt the AA factors online and the benefits of adaptive mixed-initiative shared control have been well established in terms of task completion success and operator usability. However, stability of the overall shared control framework, with communication time-delays between the operator and the robot, is a field that has not been examined extensively. This monograph presents methods to improve performance and stability in shared control so that the possibilities of its applications can be widened. Firstly, methods to improve the haptic feedback performance of teleoperation are developed. Secondly, methods to stabilize adaptive shared control systems, while still ensuring high teleoperation performance, are proposed. The methods are validated on multiple robotic systems and they were applied in several projects, both in space and terrestrial domains. With the aforementioned contributions, this monograph provides an overarching framework to improve synergy between humans and robots. The flexibility of the framework allows integration of existent teleoperation and shared control approaches, which further promotes synergy within the robotics community.

Abstract: The book contains the results of the best research developments obtained during the implementation of major scientific events organized and carried out with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation and the President of the Russian Federation. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that for the first time at the level of Russian and international interdisciplinary social and humanitarian sciences, primarily economic and legal, firstly, philosophical concepts and regulatory legal approaches to the regulation of remote investment transactions have been studied; secondly, a set of economic and legal conditions and means of harmonizing and observing the mutual interests of participants in remote investment transactions has been developed and proposed in order to prevent and minimize potential conflicts between the parties; thirdly, the current state and international regulation of investment transactions concluded and executed on Internet platforms was critically assessed; fourthly, a system of guarantees and protection of the rights of participants in remote investment transactions is proposed, including special contractual structures and an economic and legal model for the proper fulfillment of obligations. Measures are substantiated to expand and increase the intensity of the national investment turnover based on the improvement of the current legislation regulating investments through remote digital technologies in the Internet space, which provided a solution to the world scientific problem of great socioeconomic and economic importance. The book is designed for a wide target audience—scientists of different generations, different disciplinary and industry affiliations. Among them are young researchers, as well as scientists who have received recognition from the world scientific community, studying the socioeconomic, managerial, and legal consequences of the emergence and spread of digital technologies in the field of investment. Readers can be all individuals and legal entities interested in the development of digital technologies in the field of investment.

Abstract: The book explores how modern technologies, including artificial intelligence and neural networks, are being used to enhance cybersecurity. In today's world, the development of the Internet is nothing short of transformative, affecting every aspect of our lives. Ensuring the safety of its users is a paramount concern, and it requires a diverse set of disciplines to address. Researchers from various fields, including IT, mathematics, psychology, and medicine, are collectively working to tackle this interdisciplinary challenge. The significance of this issue has been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many aspects of our lives into the digital realm, from online payments to remote work and education. This shift brought new security challenges, with data privacy and system integrity taking center stage. It delves into the intricacies of Big Data by having to analyze an immense volume of network traffic data that can only be effectively analyzed with specialized tools. Real-time threat detection is critical, and the book sheds light on cutting-edge approaches to achieving this goal. The content of the book covers a broad spectrum of topics related to IT system security, from user and system profiling to preventing data leaks and defending against phishing attacks. Additionally, innovative concepts such as “glial networks” are introduced, offering new ways to interpret knowledge stored in convolutional networks. These solutions are not limited to security alone; they have applications across various domains. The book highlights the advantages of these cutting-edge approaches over existing methods, demonstrating their relevance to large corporations, public institutions, schools, small businesses, and households. In a world where security threats are constantly evolving, this book is a valuable resource for understanding the dynamic landscape of network security and the role of artificial intelligence in safeguarding our digital ecosystems.

Abstract: “Deploying … cogent theoretical ideas, lively observations from multilateral meeting rooms and candid remarks confided by key players, James shows how … politics and expertise are inevitably intertwined. Readers interested in heritage conservation, global governance and the political economy of knowledge in our post-truth times will be inspired by his piercing analysis.” (— Christoph Brumann, Head of Research Group, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle, Germany “By foregrounding the figurative and reciprocal economy of ‘prestige’ in the world of heritage conservation, this thorough, empirically grounded study … opens new and important lines of enquiry in understanding the politics of the past in the present. In doing so, the book makes a significant intervention in current debates regarding world heritage and the future of cultural heritage conservation...” — Rodney Harrison, Professor of Heritage Studies, University College London, UK “Interesting and thought-provoking, this book … gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Engaging and readable, it brings a fresh approach to our understanding of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.” — Claire Cave, Assistant Professor School of Archaeology, University College Dublin, Ireland Addressing the topic of expertise in international cultural conservation, this book argues that the UNESCO World Heritage regime emerged as a Faustian pact between protection and prestige, and a productive tension between these elements remains at its core, embodied by the heritage expert. Tracing experts’ practices in the World Heritage regime, this book shows how they burnish, broker and themselves benefit from World Heritage prestige. As World Heritage prestige also contributes to states’ international status claims, the stakes are raised, with both the denouement of the pact and the future for World Heritage poised between condemnation and redemption. Luke James is a heritage studies scholar, lawyer and heritage practitioner specialising in World Heritage and international conservation governance. Luke is Lecturer, Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies at Deakin University and previously worked in the Australian Government’s International Heritage Section, with UNESCO and as a heritage consultant.

Abstract: This book provides an essential introduction to the field of dynamical models. Starting from classical theories such as set theory and probability, it allows readers to draw near to the fuzzy case. On one hand, the book equips readers with a fundamental understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of fuzzy sets and fuzzy dynamical systems. On the other, it presents some concepts of derivatives, integrals and differential equations applied to the context of fuzzy functions. Each of the major topics is accompanied by examples, worked-out exercises, and exercises to be completed. Moreover, many applications to real problems are presented, mainly in biomathematics where the so-called p-fuzzy systems play an important role. The book has been developed on the basis of the authors’ lectures to university students and is accordingly primarily intended as a textbook for both upper-level undergraduates and graduates in applied mathematics, statistics, and engineering. It also offers a valuable resource for practitioners such as mathematical consultants and modelers, and for researchers alike, as it may provide both groups with new ideas and inspirations for projects in the fields of fuzzy logic and biomathematics. This thoroughly updated second edition includes a new chapter on fuzzy optimization, which also presents an application in carbon markets analysis and modeling.

Abstract: People in prison are usually (and often exclusively) seen and approached as persons who have committed one or more crimes and who have to pay their debt to society. However, while in prison, they often get victimised themselves. Research has demonstrated that prisons tend to be unsafe environments where various forms of victimisation take place. These forms of victimisation often go unnoticed and usually do not attract much interest from policymakers or society at large: prisoners are, indeed, far from ‘ideal victims’. This book is devoted to understanding prisoner victimisation, in particular from a European perspective. Chapters in this volume focus on recent empirical work in a number of European countries (Belgium, England and Wales and the Netherlands). These chapters are complemented with a series of reflections from a conceptual, methodological and human rights perspective.

Abstract: “[…] solidifies religion as an essential topic for journalism studies, an invaluable contribution to scholars of both religion and journalism.” —Associate Professor Gregory P. Perreault, Zimmerman School, University of South Florida, USA “[…] illuminates how, in differing national contexts, state and private sector interests interface with varied media representations of religious majorities and minorities.” —Dr. Paul Weller, Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford, and Emeritus Professor, University of Derby, UK “[…] a useful, significant, original and unique contribution to the scholarly discourse on religion in the news.” —Research Professor Ihsan Yilmaz, Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia “This empirical study, I believe, will have a significant impact both on researchers and journalists willing to rethink their approaches and revise their practices.” —Associate Professor Victor Khroul, Catholic University in Ružomberok, Slovakia This book introduces the first systematic and unified four-dimension democratic approach to newspaper religion reporting. It explores the coverage of faith, with a particular focus on Christianity and Islam, in the British and Turkish national press. The results of framing analysis, conducted through content analysis of 1,022 news articles, reveal that, in both countries, alongside the contrasting portrayals of the minority religions, even the dominant religions had a disproportioned employment of the four dimensions – spiritual, world life, political, and conflict. It contributes to scholarship not only empirically but also theoretically and methodologically, with its theoretical and methodological contribution surpassing its empirical findings. As such, it will transcend geographical and temporal boundaries, making it appealing and relevant to an international audience of academics, professionals, and students in the fields of journalism, religion, democracy, media, communication, society, and culture, as well as individuals from various backgrounds. Abstract: This volume approaches the relationship between European public sphere and political communication in the framework of establishing populism and social media. The empirical analysis focuses on the comparison between different EU countries during the 2019 EP elections campaign. The data for the analysis was collected real time from Twitter in the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Italy, Spain, Ireland and the UK. during a month period and are analyzed with both computerized quantitative and manual qualitative methods. The book introduces a new perspective in conceptualizing populism in comparative analysis, in which populism is understood rather as an antagonist logic of political identity formation than pre-defined political ideologies, movements or party cleavages. We approach implications of populist construction of ‘us’ and ‘not us’ in national contexts of 2019 EP election campaigns to find out the relationality between different political actors and parties. A special attention is paid to national/transnational and European/Eurosceptic tendencies in campaign rhetoric. By using a unique idea of ‘hashtag publics’ we approach the common Twitter discussions around the elections and ask: what particular topics and themes did different political actors distribute over Twitter during the 2019 EP elections, how were various topics and actors linked to each other, and how were campaign agendas and actors linked to populism? Abstract: Law’s regulatory reach has grown significantly over the past few decades. Yet, at the same time, law schools and legal professions in Western and Western-oriented jurisdictions have undergone an acute crisis. How is this possible? In this insightful and wide-ranging book, Luca Siliquini-Cinelli argues that these trends are in fact complementary manifestations of a single phenomenon—namely, that law is and will always be more capable of regulating social interaction without the experiential contribution of legal experts. Siliquini-Cinelli contends that the separation of law’s regulatory function from legal experts is structurally linked to the former’s nature and operational dynamics as an intellectual artifact to be used for ordering purposes. As a product of the intellect, law is a matter of knowledge, not experience. In fact, Siliquini-Cinelli holds, law’s artifactuality voids experience, including that of legal experts, making it redundant. This explains how law can thrive as a regulatory phenomenon while the very places where future legal professionals are formed and those places where it is practised are in crisis. To show this, Siliquini-Cinelli embarks upon a historical, philosophical, and comparative analysis of law’s artifactuality, focusing on the teaching, study and practise of law as intellectual endeavours, from the advent of juristic activities in the Late Roman Republic to current legal pedagogies, practices, and reforms in Civil and Common law jurisdictions. In so doing, Siliquini-Cinelli employs the Latin phrase ‘scientia iuris’ to explain why and how legal education and practice pursue knowledge at the expense of experience, and the serious implications this has for lawyering activities. Moving beyond established narratives, Siliquini-Cinelli argues that ‘scientia iuris’ ought not be reduced to dogmatic analysis (scientia iuris as doctrina iuris). Rather, ‘scientia iuris’ denotes the knowledge of the law sought by all those who teach, study, and practise it, and which is actualised through a form of legal thinking and argumentation that moves along reason’s metaphysical, constructivist lines (scientia iuris as cognitio iuris). Thus, scientia iuris is not the prerogative of a few legal scholars; rather, it lies at the very core of Western legal education and practice, broadly understood. The relevance of Siliquini-Cinelli’s original and interdisciplinary analysis is profound and far-reaching: the crisis that legal education and practice are undergoing is not an isolated, or accidental, event; it is a consequence of the very ways in which law has been taught, studied, and practised since Rome.

Abstract: This book examines the dissemination, adaptation, and application of classical economic ideas within the Hispanic world through the life of José Joaquín de Mora. Focusing on the decades surrounding the creation of the Latin American republics, it highlights how ideas from the classical political economy, including liberalism and free trade, were pioneered in the work of Mora and disseminated across the Spanish speaking world. Particular attention is given to the influence of Mora in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Bolivia and how he helped shape their economic development models and political environments. This book examines the essential role José Joaquín de Mora played in the ideological and political modernisation of Latin America. It will be of interest to students and researchers interested in the history of economic thought and the political economy. Jesús Astigarraga is Professor of Economics at the University of Zaragoza. Abstract: This Open Access book examines the long economic boom experienced in Ireland between the late 1980s and 2007, analysing why this boom occurred. The book situates Ireland as a relative latecomer to economic development, with specific challenges and advantages inherent to this position. It discusses the risks involved in remaining reliant on foreign companies, exploring how in Ireland’s case the rapidly growing economy required active, interventionist and imaginative policy measures rather than relying primarily on free market forces. The book also offers an estimation of the value of the net foreign earnings associated with different categories of exports after deducting the profit outflows and payments for imported inputs, revealing a number of findings about the importance of Irish indigenous companies and services during this time. It shows that Irish indigenous companies, assisted by industrial policy measures, played a significant part, as did the services sector, alongside the more visible and widely recognised role of foreign multinationals in high-tech manufacturing. Offering fresh insights and analyses more than 15 years after the long boom ended at the precipice of the global financial crisis, this book will be a useful resource for economic historians, scholars of political economy and macroeconomic policy, as well as those interested in modern Irish history more broadly. Abstract: “The interweaving of gender and horror serves as an unsettling lens through which current socio-cultural and political upheavals can be read. The present publication offers a kaleidoscopic analysis of our contemporary moment through an array of films, with each one shedding light on the transgressions, fears, and traumas still inscribed on the gendered body. This is a must-read volume that turns its attention to film-captured corporeal violence that marks the 21st century.” Tatiani G. EAAS Secretary General 2014-2022. “Culture Wars and Horror Movies is an excellent survey of contemporary horror cinema within its various political and cultural contexts. Uniformly insightful, the essays gathered here illuminate much of what horror since the millennium is about. Highly recommended.” Barry Keith Grant- Professor Emeritus of Film Studies and Popular Culture (Brock University). Author of The Dread of Difference: Gender and the Horror Film. Navigating a polarized society in their representation of social values, twenty-first-century horror films critically frame conflicting and divisive ideological issues. Culture Wars and Horror Movies: Gender Debates in post-2010 US Horror Cinema analyses the ways in which these “culture wars” make their way into gender, focusing on the post-2010 US context and its fundamental political divisions. Approaching these topics from feminist and postfeminist theories to ecocritical views, this volume explores how contemporary horror movies engage with the current context of “culture wars.” Noelia Gregorio-Fernández is an Associate Professor of American Studies at the International University of La Rioja, Spain. Abstract: 'An enlightening collection of work exploring the intersection between art and disability. Millett-Gallant’s writing illuminates the transformative power of perspective and its ability to challenge and redefine social norms.' Kevin Michael Connolly 'The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art has for more than a decade been the primary, indispensable resource for thinking about the myriad ways that disability is represented by contemporary artists. This second edition updates and extends Ann Millett-Gallant’s groundbreaking text.' Robert McRuer, author of Crip Theory: Cultural Signs of Queerness and Disability (2006) Operating from the position that disability offers "an opportunity for alternative and unique insights," Ann Millett-Gallant presents readers with engaging analyses of the work of Mary Duffy, Marc Quinn, Joel-Peter Witkin, Kevin Connolly, Persimmon Blackbridge, Sandie Yi, and others, which challenges prevailing stereotypes and assumptions about corporeal difference. This long-awaited revision and extension of Millet-Gallant's groundbreaking The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art (2010) is a must-read for anyone interested in art and disability. Keri Watson, Co-editor, The Routledge Companion to Art and Disability (2022) The second edition offers an essential update to the foundational first edition, The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art. Abstract: “In an age where 'anyone might be a travel writer', this is a provocative and illuminating handbook for writers and a rigorous, thoughtful study for critics.” · Dr Patrick Mullins, Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction winner 2020, Douglas Stewart prize for Non-Fiction winner 2020. Australian National University National Centre of Biography. “This both readable and rigorous work is a solid addition to the study of one of literature’s most enduring, shape-shifting genres.” · Dr John Borthwick, Australian Society of Travel Writers’ Travel Writer of the Year 2022, Pacific Asia Travel Association Gold Award winner 2022. This book stems from the question that we as co-authors grappled with for the past 3-plus years while in our own periods of stasis during the pandemic: What place does the travel writing genre hold in a post-COVID world? With the massive interruptions to travel and travel writing across 2020-2023 as the pandemic forced us indoors and into isolation, it also raised many other pertinent questions about the practice of and future of travel writing. Part of the prompt for this book comes from the post-pandemic assumption that in an ecologically fraught, less mobile, and more uncertain world, there may not be a place for travel writing as we know it to exist in any meaningful way. We examine the problems and solutions apparent for travel writing as it engages with a period of re-thinking, prompted by the pandemic, though necessary for a plethora of other reasons as well. As academics and travel writing practitioners, with decades of experience in the field, we offer a unique perspectiveon this topic – as we have the in-the-field experience of professional travel writers, and we have the academic grounding to better understand the history, theoretical concerns and contradictions of the genre to provide a more in-depth perspective to our travel writing colleagues. This grounding allows us to access a unique and valuable perspective for Re-thinking Travel Writing: The Journey of a Genre for academics, aspiring travel writers and contemporary colleagues in the field. Dr. Ben Stubbs is a senior lecturer in journalism and creative writing at the University of South Australia. Dr. Lee Mylne is a media academic who also maintains a successful career as a freelance journalist, specializing in travel and tourism.

Abstract: This book explores and defends George Saunders’ causal thesis that successful stories are those that establish causation well. The book includes an in-depth discussion of causation’s role in several different key craft elements of fiction writing and examines different theories of causation and their implications for causation in fiction. Other discussions include the role of causation in building suspense, character and causation, causation in dialogue and connections between fiction and counterfactuals (or hypotheticals). The book also considers a number of objections to the causal thesis and offers a reply. Abstract: This book contains selected papers from the 12th International Conference on Extreme Learning Machines 2022. Extreme learning machines (ELMs) continue to be an important complement to the many deep learning models you can find in the machine learning domain. ELM is fast and therefore suitable for many applications (not only in edge computing), and therefore there is a need to gather examples of possible applications. These proceedings, for the ELM 2022 conference, cover several application areas with relevant topics, where ELM can be used and has been used with great success. Here you will find several new areas (gaming, for instance) as well as improved concepts for existing application areas (signature forgery, for instance), where ELM has been implemented. In addition, some method improvements are also covered in this book, more specifically on the topic of 2nd-order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs).

Abstract: This book aims to bring together a collection of innovative and cutting-edge research that addresses the various challenges in the application and theoretical aspects of ChatGPT in education. ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that has the ability to generate human-like text based on a prompt. This has significant potential for use in the field of education, as it allows for the creation of personalized, interactive learning experiences, automating assessment and grading, and more. In e-learning, ChatGPT is used to provide instant feedback and support to students, as well as generate interactive conversations in the target language for language learning. It is also integrated with existing learning management systems and educational technology platforms to enhance their capabilities. In research, ChatGPT is used for natural language processing and sentiment analysis to gather insights on student learning experiences and educational outcomes. However, it is important to note that there are also ethical and privacy concerns that come with using language models like ChatGPT in education, such as data protection and the potential for bias. Overall, the use of ChatGPT in education has the potential to revolutionize the way we learn, teach, and access information. The book seeks to publish original manuscripts that cover a broad range of topics, from the development of new chatbot technologies and their integration into the classroom, to the examination of the ethical and pedagogical implications of these systems. By compiling the latest developments in the field and highlighting new areas for exploration, this book provides valuable insights and perspectives for researchers, educators, and practitioners working in the field of ChatGPT and education. The ultimate goal is to advance the understanding of ChatGPT and its role in education and to promote its effective and responsible use in the classroom and beyond.

Abstract: In the summer of 1928, Kurt Gödel (1906–1978) embarked on his logical journey that would bring him world fame in a mere three years. By early 1929, he had solved an outstanding problem in logic, namely the question of the completeness of the axioms and rules of quantificational logic. He then went on to extend the result to the axiom system of arithmetic but found, instead of completeness, his famous incompleteness theorem that got published in 1931. It belongs to the most iconic achievements of 20th century science and has been instrumental in the development of theories of formal languages and algorithmic computability – two essential components in the birth of the information society. This book explores Gödel’s way from an exceptional high-school student to a firmly established young logician. Essays in Gödel’s hand from the high school show that his central philosophical and scientific convictions were formed early on, before his university studies. Particular emphasis is laid on the course that made Gödel one of the foremost logicians of all times. The scientific biography of young Gödel is followed by English translations from Gödel’s German Gabelsberger shorthand of all his early preserved notebooks on logic and related topics.

Abstract: “Darren Bryant convincingly shows how Londoners' prospects during the Blitz were defined by just where in the capital they were living. Using case studies to point up surprising differences between one local district and another, he transforms our understanding of the experience of The Bombing War. Remarkable.” —Jerry White, Emeritus Professor of Modern London History, Birkbeck, University of London, UK “This book will change how you think about Londoners and the Blitz. In a fascinating and deeply researched study, Darren Bryant shows how local circumstances created very different experiences of bombing. I richly recommend the book not just to those interested in the Blitz, but to anyone interested in London's past and the wider history of civilians under fire in the Second World War.” —Daniel Todman, Professor of Modern History and Head of the School of History, Queen Mary University of London, UK This book takes a fresh approach to the London Blitz by viewing this time through individual local boroughs of the metropolis. The term ‘London Blitz’ means that culturally we have become accustomed to understanding that the actual blitz experience was the same wherever in the capital one happened to be, despite some areas being hit more than others. This book illustrates how there were many London blitzes, not one, influenced by a myriad of metropolitan localities, and giving rise to an agency of locality that helped to shape the lived blitz experience. By walking through the streets of London, this book conducts a local area analysis, witnessing the blitz through six London localities, representative of the assorted administrative, economic, and socio-political variables prevalent in wartime London. Covering air raids alongside topics like the provision of shelters, homelessness, and communal feeding, it shows how any history of the London Blitz must acknowledge that it was an experience reflective of a varied metropolis. Darren Bryant was awarded his PhD in History from Birkbeck College, University of London, UK.

Abstract: “A provocative interpretation of such Polanyian ideas as fields, ordering principles, and comprehensive entities which re-energize Plato’s notion of the Forms.” —Walter Gulick, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Humanities and Religious Studies, Montana State University Billings “Some of the most intellectually exciting work in Polanyi studies. It promises to have an important impact beyond most all that has gone before. It makes plain how Polanyi fits into the history of metaphysics and it enables us to see beyond Polanyi's own shortcomings and lacunae qua philosopher, resolving many of the long-standing controversies among Polanyi scholars.” —Dale Cannon, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy & Religious Studies, Western Oregon University This book tells the story of how the Platonic vision of Michael Polanyi – the Hungarian-British chemist and philosopher – bridges the gap between speculative metaphysics and scientific practice, thus making sense of the broad swathe of human experience in a phenomenologically satisfying fashion. The central proposal is that Polanyi is a Platonist due to his affirmation of the ontological status of abstract objects, with particular focus placed on the question of uninstantiated universals. The book engages contemporary, speculative realists from both continental and analytic traditions as it introduces Polanyi’s influential epistemology and unpacks the fascinating metaphysics implied thereby. It then proceeds to develop Polanyi’s rather unsystematic metaphysics into a coherent, post-critical Platonism which incorporates his well-known theory of tacit knowledge, thus achieving something akin to the ancient Neoplatonic synthesis of Plato and Aristotle in our contemporary, scientific context. Martin E. Turkis II is a philosopher, teacher, and musician residing in San Francisco. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy with honors from the University of Navarra. His interests include political economy, virtue ethics, and philosophy of education. He is an associate editor of the journal Tradition and Discovery.

Abstract: This book argues for the necessity of a re-evaluation of our thinking about responsibly relating to future generations in the context of environmental philosophy. Using long-term nuclear waste disposal as its paradigmatic case, this book makes the case that the predominant mode of thinking the future in terms of continuity and repetition of the present requires a critique informed by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in order to think responsibility adequately. The book begins by surveying contemporary accounts of intergenerational responsibility before outlining the specifics of nuclear waste disposal policy. With these stakes established, the contributions of Jacques Derrida to future-oriented ethics are introduced. These include discussions of communication across contexts, the relationship between inheritance and responsibility, and the political imperatives that result from this critique. This book concludes by arguing for an intergenerational environmental policy that rejects policy and infrastructural projects that depend on the present reproducing itself indefinitely.

Abstract: Phenomenology, New Materialism, and Advances In the Pulsatile Imaginary: Rites Of Disimagination brings together scholars from art history and image theory, literary studies and philosophy. Chapters of this volume engage with the overarching theme of imagination as a pulsatile force embedded in words, images, and all imaginative modes of instantiation of the work of art in their elemental aspects, expressed in visual arts, and literature, as well as bodily schemata of choreographic and musical performances. The papers employ contrasting and complementing methods from literary studies and image theory, especially phenomenology and new materialism, such as G. Bachelard and M. Merleau-Ponty, G. Bataille, J. Kristeva, P. Lacoue-Labarthe and J. Sallis, G. Didi-Huberman, H. Belting and A. Warburg, J. Bennett and Jason M. Wirth, as well as performance studies. Chapters in this volume inquire into the imaginative forces that disrupt and disinhibit the traditional habits of imagination to create pulsatile imaginaries, i.e., a dynamic process of “emergence-resurgence” of image manifested in the act of creation and in perception. This process does not properly imply a destruction of image, but rather a withdrawal of image from the realm of representation to give way to new images and new imaginative experiences. The newly coined term “rite of disimagination” points out to this operation, consecutively implying imagining and disimaging that both denies, as well as validates image – it valorizes matter. The affirmation of the materiality of image is “the re-incarnation of image.” Nicoletta Isar is Associate Professor Emerita in the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark). She is author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and the books XOPÓΣ: The Dance of Adam. The Making of Byzantine Chorography (2011) and Elemental Chorology, Vignettes Imaginales (2020).

Abstract: This book presents the most important milestones of the research on automated and autonomous driving in the United States, Japan and Europe throughout five decades (1950-2000). Drawing on sources from the automotive industry, electrical engineering, the robotics and AI-domain and military institutions, it retraces the transition from the guidance-cable approach to vehicle-based sensor and vision systems. Giving a detailed overview of the technical concepts, artefacts, research vehicles and robots, the book presents the transnational engineering efforts that started long before Silicon Valley entered the field. In addition, the book also uniquely details the role of the military in the domain of vehicle automation. This all ensures the book is of great interest to historians of technology, practitioners in engineering disciplines, scholars working in mobility studies, journalists, and political decision makers.

Abstract: This book identifies the role of insurance in a comprehensive system for managing environmental risks at the local, regional and global level. National and international legal instruments regulating environmental protection, especially aspects like pollution, are not precisely reflected in insurance concepts intended to cover environmental risks. As such, there is a need to identify environmental risks and to propose a taxonomy of environmental risks for various types of insurance coverage. The authors refer to the issues of liability in environmental protection, the scope of insurance coverage and comment on specific issues the importance of which has been noticed by the legislator or insurance practice. The book examines these issues horizontally and vertically from various standpoints, focusing on insurance as a means of managing environmental risks. In this regard, it mainly concentrates on (1) identifying and analyzing environmental risks and methods for managing them via private and public instruments, and (2) insuring these risks. The book is intended for all those interested in the field of insurance and environmental risk regimes, including lawyers, academics and legal professionals.

Abstract: This book addresses the relationship between religion, climate change, and food security in Africa. Contributors to this volume interrogate how and to what extent religion in Africa serves as a resource (or confounding factor) in responding to Sustainable Development Goals 13 (action on climate change) and 2 (achieve Zero Hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture). Approaching the theme from diverse disciplinary and methodological angles, contributors probe the potential role of religion in Africa to accelerate the achievement of these two SDGs, especially the role of religion with regard to food availability, food accessibility, food utilization, and food systems stability. Abstract: The book considers biology in parallel with philosophical structuralism in order to argue that notions of form in the organism are analogous to similar ideas in structuralist philosophy and literary theory. This analogy is then used to shed light on debates among biological scientists from the turn of the 19th century to the present day, including Cuvier, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Dawkins, Crick, Goodwin, Rosen and West-Eberhard. The book critiques the endorsement of genetic manipulation and bioengineering as keys to solving agricultural and environmental problems, suggesting that alternative models have been marginalized in the promotion of this discourse. Drawing from the work of philosophers including Cassirer, Saussure, Jakobson and Foucault the book ultimately argues that methods based on agroecology, supported by molecular applications (such as marker-assisted selection, MAS), can both advance agricultural development and remain focused on the whole organism. .

Abstract: Universities have long been dominated by a philosophy of inquiry that may be called knowledge-inquiry. This holds that, in order to do justice to the basic humanitarian aim of helping to promote human welfare, academic inquiry must, in the first instance, seek knowledge and technological know-how. First, knowledge is to be acquired; once acquired, it can be applied to help promote human welfare. But this philosophy of knowledge-inquiry is an intellectual and humanitarian disaster. It violates three of the four most elementary rules of rational problem solving conceivable, and as a result fails to give priority to the task of helping humanity resolve those conflicts and problems of living, such as the climate and nature crises, that need to be resolved if we are to make progress to a better world – a world in which there is peace, democracy, justice, liberty, and sustainable prosperity, for all. Very few academics today are aware of this rationality scandal. We urgently need to bring about a revolution in universities around the world, wherever possible, so that academic inquiry puts all four rules of rational problem solving into practice, and becomes rationally devoted to helping humanity learn how to make progress towards a better world. Knowledge-inquiry needs to become wisdom-inquiry, rationally devoted to helping humanity create a wiser world. Nicholas Maxwell is Emeritus Reader at University College London. He has devoted much of his working life to arguing we need to bring about a revolution in academia so that it comes to seek and promote wisdom and does not just acquire and apply knowledge. He has published fifteen books on this theme.

Abstract: This book deals with the ethics of technology and addresses specific ethical problems related to some emerging technologies, mainly in the field of computer science (from machine learning models to extracting value from data to human–robot interaction). The contributions are authored mainly by scholars in ICT and other engineering fields who reflect on ethical and societal issues emerging from their own research activity. Thus, rather uniquely, the work overcomes the traditional divide between pure ethical theory that disregards what practitioners do and mere R&D practice that ignores what theorists conceptualize. Conversely, the reader is enabled to understand what ethics means when it is actually put into work by engineering researchers. The book arises from a joint program between MIT and Politecnico di Milano aimed at training early career researchers in addressing the ethical issues of technology and critically reflecting on the social impacts of the emerging, and even disruptive, technologies they are currently developing through their novel research. Overall, it aims at spreading the task of developing technologies that, from the beginning, are designed to be responsible for human life, society, and nature.

Abstract: This open access book provides a historical treatment of scientific control in experimentation in the longue durée. The introduction distinguishes four related strands in the history of experimental control: the development of practices to stabilize experimental conditions; the career of the comparative design; the unfolding of methodological discussions about control practices and designs; and the history of the term “control”. Each chapter brings these distinctions to bear on specific historical episodes. The focus is on experiments with complex, elusive phenomena such as perception and learning, irregular movements, and unobservable elements. Such experiments bring control issues to the fore because they are difficult to design and stabilize and often controversial. Together, the chapters show that the local context shapes what exactly is controlled, how control can be accomplished, and how controls are justified. They also show that control strategies and methodological ideas often remain stable for a long time and change only gradually. This book, as well as the volume on analysis and synthesis in experimentation by the same editors, contains contributions by an array of experts from multiple disciplines, making it suitable for historians and philosophers of science and students alike.

Abstract: “In an era when the collective human footprint threatens not only the future of other species, but our own, we need a radical reassessment of our place in the pantheon of life. Specifically, we need a rebuke of anthropocentrism. This book— with contributions from a variety of academic disciplines—delivers.” —Jonathan Balcombe, author of What a Fish Knows and Super Fly “Science clearly shows that numerous nonhuman animals are sentient, feeling beings who care about their own well-being and quality of life along with that of their family and friends. For decades we’ve known that animals’ inner lives are complex, rich, and deep, and this book makes the inarguable case that it’s high time to use what we know on their behalf.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals This volume explores the experiences of those with little or no power—usually, although not exclusively, animals. The theme of animals as experiencing entities is what links the chapters and characterises the volume. Broadly each author in this volume contributes in one of two ways. The first group, in Section 1, theoretically engages animal subjectivity, animal experiences, and ways in which these are to some extent accessible and knowable to humans. The second group of authors, in Section 2, offer narrative accounts about specific animals or groups of animals and explore to some extent their subjective historical experiences. In summary, the first section diversely theorises about animal experiences, while the second section’s authors assume animals’ subjective experiences and construct narratives that take into account how animals might have subjectively experienced historical phenomena. Michael Glover is an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics and a member of the Australasian Animal Studies Association. Les Mitchell is a Research Fellow at the International Studies Group, University of the Free State. He is also a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.

Abstract: This book offers a critical re-appraisal of what is perhaps Merleau-Ponty’s most widely read text, the Preface to his Phenomenology of Perception. Although open and enigmatic text, the Preface is still often used to introduce phenomenology in general and Merleau-Ponty’s work specifically to students, scholars in disciplines other than philosophy, and art practitioners. Taking advantage of the fact that many of his course notes have been posthumously published in the last few decades, this book situates the Preface to the Phenomenology of Perception in the context of Merleau-Ponty's later work and shows how it contains many of the threads on which Merleau-Ponty would later pull. In doing so, the book chapters elaborate key themes in the Preface: “Phenomenology and its Paradoxes,” “Phenomenology and its Method,” “Phenomenology and its Incompletion,” “Phenomenology and Non-Phenomenology." Readers will learn about the radicality of Merleau-Ponty’s early articulation of phenomenology, how much it already suggests the profound transformation of phenomenology usually associated with his more mature work. .

Abstract: This book contains essential contributions to enrich and broaden the application field of pragmatics. It provides an example of how the fruitful reflections and refined conceptual distinctions born in the philosophical field can find a practical application in addressing social, cognitive, clinical, and psychological problems. Its chapters address, from different points of view, the relationship between pragmatic linguistics and philosophy, and outline the possible application of pragmatic theories to different domains. Developed during the third Pragmasophia international conference, whose name is derived from the Greek terms πρᾶγμα (action, fact) and σοϕία (knowledge, science), the book aligns itself with its aim to study human actions and activities and how they take shape through language. But ‘Pragma’ and ‘Sophia’ also signal another purpose: highlighting the importance of creating links between empirical investigations on language use, and more traditional philosophical approaches. In this reading, ‘Pragma’ represents the experimental goal devoted to analysing and interpreting language facts. In contrast, the term ‘Sophia’ recalls the original vocation of past philosophers to pursue an ideal of ‘pure knowledge’, disconnected from any practical-economic interest. While maintaining the conference's original purpose of encouraging productive comparisons between different approaches, the book consists of two sections: first, on philosophical approaches, recalls more theoretical aspects (closer to the term ‘Sophia’); the second, ‘Inferential and Cognitive Pragmatics,’ addresses more practical issues affecting domains such as Greek literature, pragmatic disorders, dictionary entries, and speech analysis. The reader, whether in linguists, philosophy or psychology, obtains a complete overview of the most advanced current research lines, both theoretical and empirical, and thus contributes to broadening the scope of pragmatics.

Abstract: Designing, building, and evaluating Interactive and Intelligent Systems (IIS) has highly impacted the progress of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques due to advancements in the fields of Deep Learning (DL) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). This book presents in a structured way several practical use cases of the interplay between IIS and DL/NLP, from cognitive assistants, adaptive navigation systems, virtual reality, offensive comment and cyberbullying detection, 3D modelling, and driving behaviour detection. The convergence of AI and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has been proven to foster the IIS development that nowadays represents the most used context by actively integrating AI techniques in merely any layer of modern applications. The main goal of this book is to provide a practical reference with a rich set of approaches and applications consisting of selected and revised papers from the International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (RoCHI) 2022 that was held on 6-7 October 2022 at the University of Craiova, Romania. The book addresses researchers and practitioners with experience in IIS and AI (mainly DL and NLP) who want to study successfully developed workflows and applications that may be useful in their attempts to tackle issues from their contexts. Although the book nicely integrates concepts from various areas, each chapter may be considered a standalone topic with its research issue, proposed approach, experimental results, and discussions.

Abstract: This book is dedicated to all those interested in the application of artificial intelligence in engineering and project management. Most of the jobs are focused on achieving agile project development. New algorithms that combine various computational intelligence techniques are applied in different areas of knowledge in project management. In this book, computational intelligence is presented as the branch of AI that encompasses various techniques aimed at simulating human tolerance in decision-making processes in environments with uncertainty and imprecision. Among the precursor techniques of computational intelligence are: evolutionary algorithms, artificial neural networks, fuzzy set theory, and fuzzy systems. However, other areas such as the rough set, linguistic data summary, natural language processing, the conversational systems, fuzzy cognitive maps, collective intelligence, the neutrosophic theory, and other fuzzy logic extensions are contributing to the application and extension of computational intelligence The book is organized into three parts, as shown below. The first part constitutes a critical review of computational intelligence in project management. The second part presents new computational intelligence techniques and their applications in project planning, control, and monitoring processes. In particular, the use of conversational systems and their applicability in the agile management of portfolio programs and projects stand out. Part three of the book exemplifies the use of computing techniques with words and other computational intelligence techniques for organizational decision-making. The authors of the book stand out for their extensive experience in the development of basic and applied applications of computational intelligence. The authors Janusz Kacprzyk, Pedro Y. Piñero Pérez, Rafael E. Bello Pérez, and Iliana Pérez Pupo have published several books associated with artificial intelligence and computational intelligence applied to projects. They continue working on fundamental-oriented and applied research on different artificial intelligence techniques to help with decision-making in different areas of knowledge. Authors would like to thank all the engineers, professors, and researchers without whose efforts this book could not have been written. .

Abstract: The intent of this book focuses on Australia’s First Nations truth, voice, recognition, diversity, and respect. Hope O’Chin explains that knowledge about Australian First Nations culture and learning can be seen through new conceptual lens, which she refers to as an Ontology of Dreaming Hope for Australians. The book proposes to move from ontological propositions embedded in pedagogies and methodologies that center on the relevance of Indigenous epistemes and ways of doing. O’Chin offers a conceptual framing for engaging with Indigenous peoples, and forming communities of belongingness and relationality. She offers suggestions for ways in which art and education can act as ‘healing’ and a way forward towards a more inclusive civil society. Reflexive practice, ethnographic principles, and action research is described in a way that methodologies provide an understanding of a sense of Belonging. O'Chin argues that theoretical research, art, and educational practice can add to the value of determining a strategy of Indigenous art investment within Australia, and to address how art and education can be used to validate contemporary expression of Aboriginality within contemporary Australian society. Ultimately, the book is about Indigenous strengths and what Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing can offer, and how one might go about honouring and working in this way respectfully. Hope O’Chin is a Kabi-Kabi, Wakka-Wakka, Koa, Gugu-Yalanji elder, educator, and artist. She obtained her PhD from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. She has worked within Government and the Private Sector, and, within the Education Sector as a Teacher, Executive Administrator, Tutor, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer. As an artist, Hope has more than 45 exhibitions.

Abstract: Around the world, Islamic cultures have developed distinctive matrilineal, matrifocal, matrilocal, or matriarchal natures as a result of how they have been practised by integrated and indigenised Muslim communities. In matrilineal descent systems, in contrast to the more common mosaic of patrilineal patterns, children belong to the mother’s ancestry group. Matrilineal Muslims therefore follow a social system in which people are identified with their mother's lineage, and the inheritance of property as well as succession are transferred through the matriline. This volume focuses on matrilineal, matrifocal and matriarchal Muslims and their unique folk natures, integrated social structures, adopted legal systems, and so on. It provides a unique perspective for understanding global Muslim communities that have succeeded in integrating the matrilineal tenets of local practices with religion, adhering to essential Islamic values in a way that makes traditional women-centred cultures acceptable to mainstream Islam. Abstract: Chapter 1: Initial Considerations -- Chapter 2: Dimensions of Meaningful Aging -- Chapter 3: The Longevity of Justice: Assessing Peter Derkx’s Approach.
Abstract: Aging is a topic of growing interest. As life expectancy in western societies is increasing, the growing number and proportion of ‘elderly’ persons raise urgent questions on how to age ‘well’. Predominantly, questions on aging are taken from biomedical and economic paradigms, which are intertwined. While people of age are seen as a cost in society, biomedical research aims at curing the declining effects of aging, thus furthering ideals of ‘healthy’ aging, ‘active’ aging, or ‘successful’ aging. In this book, Peter Derkx offers a comprehensive account of meaningful aging with Anthony Pinn responding in a fruitful and constructive way, for the benefit and edification of all of us. Peter Derkx is Professor Emeritus of Humanism and Worldviews at the University of Humanistic Studies. Anthony B. Pinn is Agnes Cullen Arnold Distinguished Professor of Humanities at Rice University.

Abstract: “Sören Hilbrich’s work on legitimacy and global governance is original, illuminating and very thorough in its discussion of the question of the nature of legitimacy for international institutions. I am especially impressed with the in-depth discussion of the legitimacy of the G20.” —Thomas Christiano, University of Arizona “Sören Hilbrich develops a conception of legitimacy as the right to function, which is applicable to all political institutions. The implication of this conceptually rich discussion is that we should not be too ambitious in our legitimacy standards for Global Governance institutions. This study is a remarkable achievement and is a must for those interested in International Political Theory.” —Michael Zürn, WZB Berlin Social Science Center Global governance has a major impact on the lives of people around the world. However, traditional theories of legitimacy were usually developed for states and are not suitable for the diversity of global governance institutions that exist today. This book first develops a normative concept of legitimacy that is applicable to all political institutions. According to this concept, to regard an institution as legitimate means ascribing it the right to exercise its function in political practice. Secondly, the book discusses how the use of this concept opens up new perspectives in the debate on legitimacy criteria for global governance institutions. In this context, the book analyses the relationship of legitimacy to the values of justice and democracy and discusses the role of feasibility constraints and the all-affected principle in legitimacy judgements. The concept of legitimacy as the right to function opens up the conceptual space to accommodate the insight that legitimacy criteria are not the same for all global governance institutions, but depend on their function and context. Thirdly, the book applies the developed theoretical framework to a specific global governance institution, the G20. Sören Hilbrich is a researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability in Bonn, Germany.

Abstract: This book focuses on the war in Afghanistan. In 2010 and 2011, the author took a leave from her faculty position at the University of California, Irvine to train and then deploy as a cultural advisor with two U.S. Army combat units in Afghanistan. Her account begins with the U.S. Army’s four-month training program for cultural advisors, follows her deployment, much of it on missions to remote and volatile areas far from brigade headquarters, and concludes with her uneasy return home. She examines the everyday lives of Americans sent to conduct a war of counterinsurgency, including their sexual exploits on base, their superstitions, even the heroic accounts that military contractors recount in their personal stories of past wars, stories that are sometimes a little too good to be true. In turn, she explores the views of ordinary Afghans to this American occupation. Carol Burke is Professor Emerita in English at UC Irvine, and Visiting Scholar in University of North Carolina’s Program in Peace, War and Defense. She combines her ethnographic skills as a folklorist with her interest in literary journalism. Publications include Camp All-American, Hanoi Jane, and the High-and-Tight, a study of military culture; Women’s Visions, a book that explores accounts of the supernatural and the uncanny exchanged by women in prison; The Creative Process (coauthored with Molly Tinsley), a creative writing text; Plain Talk and Back in Those Days, collections of family folklore--the latter coauthored with Martin Light; and Close Quarters, a collection of poems. Articles have appeared in magazines like The Nation and The New Republic as well as scholarly journals and collections. Before joining the faculty at UCI in 2004, Professor Burke taught courses in literary journalism at Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins Universities.

Abstract: This book explores African philosophic sagacity, or wisdom philosophy, as proposed by Odera Oruka in his “Four Trends in Current African Philosophy” (1981), which he later expanded to six trends (1998). Oruka defines philosophic sagacity as wisdom philosophy, or philosophy of the wise men of Africa who are independent, liberal and non-conformist thinkers, and who often deviate from the accepted common norms of their societies. This book takes philosophic sagacity discourse beyond Oruka’s definition by encompassing traditional wise sayings and proverbs. It combines individual liberal thinkers and the communal ideas, and cherishes both rational and emotional engagement, offering a broader understanding of African philosophic sagacity. Wilfred Lajul opens the door for new researchers to venture into the study of African languages, wisdom sayings, and proverbs, and helps to unveil the content of this philosophy from the perspective of different African societies. Wilfred Lajul is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Gulu University, Uganda.

Conclusion: Phenomenological Intentionality and Looking-Glass Sociality.
Abstract: This book extends Alfred Schutz’s “On Multiple Realities” by describing the provinces of meaning of play, music, religious ritual, and African-American folkloric humor. Throughout these provinces, the author traces two themes: resilience and responsiveness. In resilience, individuals or communities run up against obstacles, imposed relevances, which they come to terms with, or give meaning to (in phenomenological parlance), by modifying, evading, overcoming, or accepting them. Responsiveness emerges from Schutz’s idea of making music together, which the author takes further by analyzing the mimetic encounter with the other and the asymmetries in listening to music, and, especially, by showing how the features of the cognitive style of music as a province of meaning affect sociality, disposing us to be more vulnerable and attentive to each other’s non-conceptual, musical meanings. This text appeals to upper-level undergraduate students and graduate students as well as to faculty in philosophy.

Abstract: This book tells the uncommon story of a missionary family in the Midwestern United States, and their interactions with the indigenous Ojibwe. When Leonard and Harriet Wheeler arrived at La Pointe, Wisconsin in July of 1841, hoping to help the Ojibwe understand and accept the value of Christian civility, they did not expect such a profound transformation of their own lives. The Wheelers’ empathy for the Ojibwe not only grew during their twenty-five years of mission work in Northern Wisconsin, much of it spent trying to protect the Ojibwe from predatory whites, it also influenced the lives of their children. Nancy Bunge, a Professor Emerita at Michigan State University, also served as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature and Culture at the University of Vienna, the Free University of Brussels, the University of Ghent, and the University of Siegen. She was a visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School.
