The book analyses the different forms of democracy, the concept of development, and addresses the debate about the relationship between democracy and development and explores the influence of the media in the democratization process, the promises that digital media bring to this process and to development, and the implications of the African digital divide.     Abstract: The book examines women's language as an ideological construct historically created by discourse. The aim is to demonstrate, by delineating a genealogy of Japanese women's language, that, to deconstruct and denaturalize the relationships between gender and any language, and to account for why and how they are related as they are, we must consider history, discourse and ideology.     Abstract: Eine andere Welt ist nicht nur möglich, sie ist auch absolut notwendig. Die globalen Probleme des Klimawandels, der Armut, sozialen Ungleichheit oder der Finanzkrise erfordern ein Umdenken und veränderte Formen des Zusammenlebens. Viele Bewegungen, Initiativen und Gruppierungen suchen aktuell schon nach alternativen Wegen.Ihnen allen gemeinsam ist das Streben nach einer neuen Kunst, miteinander zu leben (con-vivere). Konvivialismus bedeutet das Ausloten von Möglichkeiten, wie jenseits der Wachstumsgesellschaft ein Zusammenleben möglich sein kann, wie Sozialität, Konflikt und Individualität aufeinander bezogen werden und wie ökologisch und sozial nachhaltige Formen demokratischen Lebens ausschauen können.     Abstract: Global phenomenons like climate change, poverty, terrorism, or financial crises suggest thinking about changed forms of coexistence and perception. Many movements, initiatives, and groups are currently searching for alternative ways. They all share a yearning for a new art of living together (con-vivere). Convivialism means exploring possibilities for people to provide for each other and at the same time take care of nature, albeit without avoiding legitimate conflicts. The globally discussed manifesto by renowned authors clarifies: This can only succeed within a social order that invokes a joint humanity, principles of joint socialization, the principle of individuality, and acceptance of creative opposition.

    Abstract: Die Teilhabe am Herrschaftsprozess ist für demokratische Gesellschaften von zentraler Bedeutung. Staat und Gesellschaft müssen miteinander verknüpft sein, sonst gerät die Legitimation politischer Entscheidungen in Gefahr. Die politische Teilhabe – etwa in Wahlen und Parteien – ist in Deutschland aber eng an die Staatsbürgerschaft geknüpft. Ausländer im rechtlichen Sinne dürfen nicht an allen politischen Entscheidungen mitwirken.     Abstract: Gegenwärtige politische und wissenschaftliche Diskussionen um Antisemitismus in politischen Parteien fokussieren vor allem auf die Ränder des politischen Spektrums. Aus der Perspektive der Antisemitismusforschung stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern diese Wahrnehmung mit der Wirklichkeit korrespondiert. Zentrale Fragen sind unter anderem, wie sich der Antisemitismus in den unterschiedlichen politischen Parteien der Bundesrepublik artikuliert, inwiefern Unterschiede zwischen den antisemitischen Äußerungen in den einzelnen Parteien feststellbar sind, wie Parteien reagieren, wenn sich einzelne Mitglieder antisemitisch äußern, und welche Sanktionsmechanismen es gibt.Der Sammelband liefert Einschätzungen von Antisemitismus- und Parteienforscher(inne)n zu dem Thema und trägt der Erkenntnis Rechnung, dass antisemitische Äußerungen quer durch alle politischen Lager zu finden sind

    Abstract: This book looks at sovereignty as a particular form of power and politics. It shows that the fate of bodies in the transition from life to death can provide a key to understanding fundamental ways in which sovereignty is claimed and performed. The contributions analyse (post-)conflict as well as non-conflict contexts, which too often are studied in isolation from one another. Focusing on contemporary issues rather than the equally important historical dimensions, they all grapple with the questions of who governs the dead bodies, how, why and with what effects. The book analyses how dead bodies are placed and dealt with in spaces between competing, overlapping and nested sovereign orders, under normal as well as exceptional conditions. It looks at contributions that draw on psychoanalysis, critical theory, the structuralist-functionalist anthropology of burial rituals and recent ideas of agency and materiality. The book first explains the efforts of states to contain and separate out dead bodies in particular sites. It explores the ways in which such efforts of containment are negotiated and contested in struggles between different entities that claim the dead bodies. The book then shows how entities that claim sovereignty produce effects of sovereignty by challenging and transgressing the laws regarding the legitimate use of violence and how dead bodies should be treated with dignity

    Abstract: "The past century witnessed dramatic changes in the lives of modern Chinese women and gender politics. Whilst some revolutionary actions to rectify the feudalist patriarchy, such as foot-binding and polygyny were first seen in the late Qing period; the termination of the Qing Dynasty and establishment of Republican China in 1911-1912 initiated truly nation-wide constitutional reform alongside increasing gender egalitarianism. This book traces the radical changes in gender politics in China, and the way in which the lives, roles and status of Chinese women have been transformed over the last one hundred years. In doing so, it highlights three distinctive areas of development for modern Chinese women and gender politics: first, women's equal rights, freedom, careers, and images about their modernized femininity; second, Chinese women's overseas experiences and accomplishments; and third, advances in Chinese gender politics of non-heterosexuality and same-sex concerns.This book takes a multi-disciplinary approach, drawing on film, history, literature, and personal experience. As such, it will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Chinese culture and society, women's studies, gender studies and gender politics"..

    Abstract: Fürstinnen in Friedensverhandlungen, Botschaftergattinnen, die ihre Ehemänner in diplomatischen Verhandlungen unterstützen, eine Frau als erste offiziell akkreditierte Botschafterin der Sowjetunion, die Außenpolitik des wilhelminischen Deutschland unter dem Verdacht der Homosexualität: Der vorliegende Sammelband widmet sich der Frage, welche Rolle das Geschlecht und die mit ihm assoziierten Eigenschaften in der diplomatischen Praxis spielten. Unter welchen Umständen konnte die Geschlechtszugehörigkeit vor andere Kategorien wie Stand, Alter, Erfahrung oder Bildung treten, in welchen Kontexten wurde sie zur Nebensache? Ausgehend von Einzelfallstudien steckt der epochenübergreifend angelegte Sammelband ein neues Forschungsfeld ab und legt somit einen Grundstein für eine Geschlechtergeschichte von Außenpolitik.

    Description / Table of Contents: In the 1950s and 1960s, images of children appeared everywhere, from movies to milk cartons, their smiling faces used to sell everything, including war. In this provocative book, Margaret Peacock offers an original account of how Soviet and American leaders used emotionally charged images of children in an attempt to create popular support for their policies at home and abroad. Groups on either side of the Iron Curtain pushed visions of endangered, abandoned, and segregated children to indict the enemy's state and its policies. Though the Cold War is often characterized as an ideological divide between the capitalist West and the communist East, Peacock demonstrates a deep symmetry in how Soviet and American propagandists mobilized similar images to similar ends, despite their differences. Based on extensive research spanning fourteen archives and three countries, Peacock tells a new story of the Cold War, seeing the conflict not simply as a divide between East and West, but as a struggle between the producers of culture and their target audiences.--

Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: This volume explores the normative foundations of fair(er) relations in the immigration society. The focus is on the concept of solidarity. Beyond a »solidarity among intimates«, immigration society solidarity designates an active practice, which while not necessarily commonality-based, entails both a concrete opponent as well as a political concept of society. This idea is questioned and further developed in the contributions in terms of its theoretical, moral, educational, philosophical, and sociological dimensions.

    Abstract: This book discusses the forms and dynamics of political processes in rural India with a special emphasis on West Bengal, the nation's fourth-most populous state. West Bengal's political distinction stems from its long legacy of a Left-led coalition government for more than thirty years and its land reform initiatives. The book closely looks at how people from different castes, religions, and genders represent themselves in local governments, political parties, and in the social movements in West Bengal. At the same time it addresses some important questions: Is there any new pattern of politics emerging at the margins? How does this pattern of politics correspond with the current discourse of governance?     Abstract: The sectional conflict over slavery in the United States was not only a clash between labour systems and political ideologies but also a viscerally felt part of the lives of antebellum Americans. This book contributes to the growing field of emotions history by exploring how specific emotions shaped Americans' perceptions of, and responses to, the sectional conflict in order to explain why it culminated in disunion and war. Emotions from indignation to jealousy were inextricably embedded in antebellum understandings of morality, citizenship, and political affiliation. Their arousal in the context of political debates encouraged Northerners and Southerners alike to identify with antagonistic sectional communities and to view the conflicts between them as worth fighting over.     Abstract: The teenager has often appeared in culture as an anxious figure,the repository for American dreams and worst nightmares, at once on the brinkof success and imminent failure. Spotlighting the "troubled teen" as a site ofpop cultural, medical, and governmental intervention, Chronic Youthtraces the teenager as a figure through which broad threats to the normativeorder have been negotiated and contained. Examining television, popular novels, science journalism, newmedia, and public policy, Julie Passanante Elman shows how the teenager becamea cultural touchstone for shifting notions of able-bodiedness,heteronormativity, and neoliberalism in the late twentieth century. By the late1970s, media industries as well as policymakers began developing new problem-driven‘edutainment’ prominently featuring narratives of disability—from theimmunocompromised The Boy in the Plastic Bubble to ABC’s After SchoolSpecials and teen sick-lit. Although this conjoining of disabilityand adolescence began as a storytelling convention, disability became much morethan a metaphor as the process of medicalizing adolescence intensified by the1990s, with parenting books containing neuro-scientific warnings about theincomplete and volatile "teen brain." Undertaking a cultural history of youththat combines disability, queer, feminist, and comparative media studies, Elmanoffers a provocative new account of how American cultural producers,policymakers, and medical professionals have mobilized discourses of disabilityto cast adolescence as a treatable "condition." By tracing the teen’s unevenpassage from postwar rebel to 21st century patient, Chronic Youth showshow teenagers became a lynchpin for a culture of perpetual rehabilitation andneoliberal governmentality

    Abstract: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself

    Abstract: Leveraging, according to David M. Anderson and his colleagues, is both a basic principle of human conduct and the most dominant strategy in recent years that individuals, organizations and countries use to pursue their ends. Although many scholars agree that a crisis of “over-leveraging” caused the financial crisis of 2008-2010, it has not been appreciated that an “over-leveraging” crisis has existed in American politics and the American family system as well. This book addresses the need for a “Leverage Mean” (falling between the extremes of too much leverage and too little leverage) in the economy, politics, family life, and international relations. It identifies three different kinds of leveraging-bargaining, resource, and investment and provides an explanatory and normative theory which draws on the fields of economics, political science, sociology, history, psychology, international relations, law, and philosophy. Moreover, it shows how the dissolution of the Cold War, the dismantling of the modern family, and the rise of the Internet along with the deregulation of the financial services industry led to the diffusion of power which has made leveraging of the first importance for everyone. This book should be of interest to social scientists, philosophers, political theorists, public policy makers and politicians. David Anderson and his colleagues are the first to characterize and assess one of the major instruments of power of the contemporary era.
