    Abstract: Wie stellen Menschen die Ereignisse in ihrer Lebensgeschichte und der Geschichte ihrer Familie(n) dar, wenn sie davon erzählen? Wie stehen das Erzählen und das Erleben in der Gegenwart im Zusammenhang mit dem Erleben und dem Erzählen in der Vergangenheit? Dieses Buch beantwortet diese Fragen mit einer theoretisch-empirischen Untersuchung der gegenseitigen Wechselwirkungen von Erinnern, Erleben und der Präsentation des Erlebten zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten eines Lebensverlaufs und der damit zusammenhängenden Verläufe der Kollektivgeschichten. Die Autorin greift in dieser mittlerweile klassischen Studie vor allem Ansätze der Phänomenologie sowie der Gestalttheorie auf – und in der Zeit seit der 1.     Abstract: "'Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials' examines how the modification, destruction, or absence of monuments and memorials can be viewed as performative acts that challenge prescribed, embodied narratives in the public realm. Bringing together international, multidisciplinary approaches, the chapters in this volume interrogate the ways in which memorial constructions disclose implicitly and explicitly the proxy battle for public memory and identity, particularly since 2015. Acknowledging the ways in which the past — which is given agency through monuments and memorials — intrudes into daily life, this volume offers perspectives from researchers that answer questions about the roles of monuments and memorials as persistent, yet mutable, works whose meanings are not fixed but are, rather, subject to processes of continual re-interpretation. By using monuments and memorials as lenses through which to view race, memory, and the legacies of war, power, and subjugation, this volume demonstrates how these works, and their visible representations of entitlement, possession, control, and authority, can offer the opportunity to pose and answer questions about whose memory matters and what our symbols say about who we are and what we value. Fallen Monuments and Contested Memorials is essential reading for scholars and students studying cultural heritage, history, art history, and public history.     Abstract: In Immeasurable Weather Sara J. Grossman explores how environmental data collection has been central to the larger project of settler colonialism in the United States. She draws on an extensive archive of historical and meteorological data spanning two centuries to show how American scientific institutions used information about the weather to establish and reinforce the foundations of a white patriarchal settler society. Grossman outlines the relationship between climate data and state power in key moments in the history of American weather science, from the nineteenth-century public data-gathering practices of settler farmers and teachers and the automation of weather data during the Dust Bowl to the role of meteorological satellites in data science's integration into the militarized state. Throughout, Grossman shows that weather science reproduced the natural world as something to be measured, owned, and exploited. This data gathering, she contends, gave coherence to a national weather project and to a notion of the nation itself, demonstrating that weather science's impact cannot be reduced to a set of quantifiable phenomena

    Abstract: Wer von Erbe im Zusammenhang mit Identität spricht, verspricht sich und Anderen "Kontinuität" und "Stabilität". Das Versprechen hält indes nur so lange, wie sich Menschen auf die damit verbundenen Erzählungen einlassen. Da diese zunehmend hinterfragt werden und der Begriff "Identität" im politischen Raum zu einer umkämpften Kategorie avanciert ist, werden auch die lange gehegten, gewohnten "Konstruktionen" instabil. Dies zeigt sich insbesondere in Momenten des Konflikts, der übergriffigen Inanspruchnahme und des Verlusts. Der Titel "Instabile Konstruktionen" verweist zugleich auf die beiden Kernbereiche des Kollegs: einerseits auf Architektur und Denkmalpflege, in denen der Begriff Konstruktion sich auf bauliche Manifestationen bezieht, von denen eine gewisse Haltbarkeit und Dauerhaftigkeit erwartet wird und andererseits auf die Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften, wo Konstruktion die soziale Herstellung symbolischer Sinnwelten meint. Ins Zentrum rückt so der Anspruch, die materielle Umwelt im Wechselverhältnis zu ihrer sozialen Gemachtheit zu verstehen.

    Abstract: Looking back over the centuries, migration has always formed an important part of human existence. Spatial mobility emerges as a key driver of urban evolution, characterized by situation-specific combinations of opportunities, restrictions, and fears. This collection of essays investigates interactions between European cities and migration between the early modern period and the present. Building on conceptual approaches from history, sociology, and cultural studies, twelve contributions focus on policies, representations, and the impact on local communities more generally. Combining case-studies and theoretical reflections, the volume's contributions engage with a variety of topics and disciplinary perspectives yet also with several common themes. One revolves around problems of definition, both in terms of demarcating cities from their surroundings and of distinguishing migration in a narrower sense from other forms of short- and long-distance mobility. Further shared concerns include the integration of multiple analytical scales, contextual factors, and diachronic variables (such as urbanization, industrialization, and the digital revolution)

    Abstract: Im Anschluss an bisherige Forschungen zu Heimatzeitschriften der Deutschen in und aus dem östlichen Europa am IVDE Freiburg rückten in den letzten Jahren Fragestellungen zu ihrer visuellen Gestaltung ins Blickfeld. Erste Untersuchungen waren der Gestaltung von Titelseiten, medienspezifischen Werbeanzeigen oder beteiligten Akteuren gewidmet. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nähern sich dieser Thematik an und ergänzen bisherige Ergebnisse mit neuen Aspekten. Neben Überlegungen zu Brüchen und Kontinuitäten bei der visuellen Konstruktion von Periodika, die an Vorgängerzeitschriften in den Herkunftsgebieten anknüpften, werden Bildmotive, Bild-Text-Bezüge und unterschiedliche Deutungskontexte bei Kunstwerken und Fotografien diskutiert. Weitere Beiträge erörtern ausgewählte Gesichtspunkte der Geschichte der Fotografie in den Ländern der Böhmischen Krone und der Bildmotive in der Amateurfotografie vor 1945 sowie die Reproduktion solcher Aufnahmen in Heimatzeitschriften nach 1945. Auch Fragen der frühen fotografischen Reportage in den 1950er-Jahren und des fotografischen Blickes von Heimatreisenden werden beleuchtet. Ein Bericht über die Neuerungen des Online-Handbuchs Heimatpresse sowie der Fotografen- und Künstlerdatenbank schließt den Sammelband ab.     Abstract: "Challenging narratives of Indigenous cultural loss and disappearance that are still prevalent in the archaeological study of colonization, this book highlights collaborative research and efforts to center the enduring histories of Native peoples in North America through case studies from several regions across the continent. The contributors to this volume, including Indigenous scholars and Tribal resource managers, examine different ways that archaeologists can center long-term Indigenous presence in the practices of fieldwork, laboratory analysis, scholarly communication, and public interpretation. These conversations range from ways to reframe colonial encounters in light of Indigenous persistence to the practicalities of identifying poorly documented sites dating to the late nineteenth century. In recognizing Indigenous presence in the centuries after 1492, this volume counters continued patterns of unknowing in archaeology and offers new perspectives on decolonizing the field. These essays show how this approach can help expose silenced histories, modeling research practices that acknowledge Tribes as living entities with their own rights, interests, and epistemologies"--

    Abstract: When, how, and why did the Himalaya become the highest mountains in the world? In 1800, Chimborazo in South America was believed to be the world's highest mountain, only succeeded by Mount Everest in 1856. Science on the Roof of the World tells the story of this shift, and the scientific, imaginative, and political remaking needed to fit the Himalaya into a new global scientific and environmental order. Lachlan Fleetwood traces untold stories of scientific measurement and collecting, indigenous labour and expertise, and frontier-making to provide the first comprehensive account of the East India Company's imperial entanglements with the Himalaya. To make the Himalaya knowable and globally comparable, he demonstrates that it was necessary to erase both dependence on indigenous networks and scientific uncertainties, offering an innovative way of understanding science's global history, and showing how geographical features like mountains can serve as scales for new histories of empire

Die Beiträge behandeln historische Siedlungsgebiete mit deutschsprachigen Minderheiten im ostmitteleuropäischen und osteuropäischen Raum. Es wird versucht nachzuzeichnen, auf welche Weise die historisch gebauten Bauern-, Hirten- oder Fischerhäuser ausgestattet wurden, wo und warum sie in der akademischen Bildungssphäre einen ästhetischen und repräsentativen Wert zugesprochen erhielten, wie ihre Verdrängung während der Epoche des Sozialismus vor sich ging und wann sie unter neuen wirtschaftlichen und lebensweltlichen Prämissen als temporäre oder auch dauerhafte Wohngebäude neu entdeckt wurden. Die Wiederentdeckung bzw. Neubelebung erfolgte und erfolgt aktuell unter verschiedenen Aspekten. Neben das Motiv der Erhaltung des Erbes der Minderheitenkulturen und seiner nichtmusealen Identitätspräsentation treten nun die Nachhaltigkeitseffekte der Bauweise mit lokal-/regionaltypischen Materialien und Handwerkstechniken (etwa Holzbauweise) sowie eine im Computerzeitalter neugewonnene Attraktivität des ländlich-ruhigen Wohnens in den Vordergrund.     Abstract: Das romantische Bild der innigen naturgegebenen Beziehung von Mutter und Kind prägt bis heute das Klischee der Mutterrolle. Wie ist dieses Bild von Mutterschaft entstanden? In ihrer Dissertation erforscht Sandra Busch die Verbindung von maternalistischen Grundmustern und Romantik. Sie stellt die These auf, dass sich die Mutterbilder der Romantik aus dem 18. ins 21. Jahrhundert transferiert haben. Aus kultur- und erziehungswissenschaftlicher Perspektive blickt die Autorin zunächst auf (früh-)romantische Mutterbilder in literarischen und pädagogischen Texten, in denen das um 1800 entstehende neue Verständnis von Kindheit deutlich wird. Die weiteren Untersuchungen spannen den Bogen von der Reformpädagogik bis zur Still-Renaissance der 1970er- und 1980er-Jahre, in denen sich das Weiterwirken romantisch-natürlich orientierter Konzepte in Texten zu Geburt und Stillen manifestiert. In der spezifischen Verbindung von Mutterbildern, Romantik, Natur und Natürlichkeit zeigt Sandra Busch, wie sich die Ideen des 18. Jahrhunderts im kulturhistorischen Wandel als zentrales Deutungsmuster von Mutterschaft in der Moderne etablieren

Besonders nach der Haitianischen Revolution 1791-1804 wurde mit der Figur des Zombies Wissen über den karibischen Raum produziert, das auch Vorstellungen von Europa nachhaltig prägte. Gudrun Rath untersucht erstmals diese vergessene transatlantische Geschichte der Zombie-Figur und zeigt, wie sie im Kontext von stereotypen Karibik-Darstellungen, Diskursen über Versklavung und Abolition, Todesriten und Vorstellungen von Körper und Seele nach dem Tod zum Einsatz kam - und wie sie Europa nicht nur in der Popkultur bis heute heimsucht

    Abstract: Vorstellungen Europas, Selbst- und Fremdbilder, Raum- und Grenzkonstruktionen wurden und werden besonders seit der Sattelzeit um 1800 gerade auch über Diskurse eines ‚Abendlandes‘ geformt. Abendlanddiskurse lassen sich als polyvalent einsetzbare, modellier- und adaptierbare Diskurskomplexe und als Gewebe von Erinnerungsdiskursen bezeichnen, die mal stärker nationalistisch, mal stärker religiös, mal stärker universalistisch ausgeformt, mehr oder weniger stark auf Grenzkonstruktion ausgerichtet sind und mehr oder weniger konkret politisch verwendet werden. Dem interdisziplinären Band wird die These zugrunde gelegt, dass Abendlanddiskurse wesentlich durch den Gebrauch von Gedächtnisbeständen, durch eine Pluralität miteinander verwobener Erinnerungsnarrative konstruiert werden. Im Fokus der Beiträge von Historikerinnen, Geschichtsdidaktikern und Literaturwissenschaftlern aus Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, Italien, Belgien und der Schweiz stehen Intellektuellendiskurse und deren Vermittlung im öffentlichen Raum, Literatur und Kunst.

    Abstract: Despite the social sciences' growing fascination with tattooing--and the immense popularity of tattoos themselves--the practice has not left much of a historical record. And, until very recently, there was no good context for writing a serious history of tattooing in the West. This collection exposes, for the first time, the richness of the tattoo's European and American history from antiquity to the present day. In the process, it rescues tattoos from their stereotypical and sensationalized association with criminality. The tattoo has long hovered in a space between the cosmetic and the punitive. Throughout its history, the status of the tattoo has been complicated by its dual association with slavery and penal practices on the one hand and exotic or forbidden sexuality on the other. The tattoo appears often as an involuntary stigma, sometimes as a self-imposed marker of identity, and occasionally as a beautiful corporal decoration.

    Abstract: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured "coolie" laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West Indies-where Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worship-and ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as "African" and "Indian" despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, Hosay's mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now. In a nuanced study of these two practices, Aisha Khan sheds light on power dynamics through religious and racial identities formed in the context of colonialism in the Atlantic world, and shows how today these identities reiterate inequalities as well as reinforce demands for justice and recognition

    Abstract: Vom Wallfahrts- und Heimatmuseum zum Heimathaus Münsterland, von einem katholisch geprägten Museum zu einer der Vielfalt des Glaubens zugewandten Einrichtung, von einem dem Heimatgedanken verpflichteten volkskundlichen Museum zu einem Religionsmuseum, von bescheidenen Anfängen zu einer Institution mit regionalem Anspruch, von einem ehrenamtlich zu einem professionell geführten Museum - von all dem erzählt die Geschichte des Westfälischen Museums für Religiöse Kultur in Telgte. Zugleich geht sie darüber hinaus. Indem Rüdiger Robert den Wandel von Kultur und Gesellschaft in seine Analyse der Geschichte des Museums einbezieht, veranschaulicht er, dass Museen stets in doppeltem Sinne Orte der Geschichte sind: Zum einen spiegelt sich in ihnen der jeweilige Zustand einer Gesellschaft wider, zum anderen geben sie mit ihrer Tätigkeit Impulse zur Gestaltung und zum Verständnis von Gesellschaft. Das trifft auch für das Museum Relígio zu. Die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wird deshalb aus der Analyse ebenso wenig ausgeblendet wie der gesellschaftliche Wandel in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

    Abstract: "On November 24, 1929, rumors that British colonial officials planned to tax Igbo women reached the village of Oloko in southeastern Nigeria. Mark Emeruwa, instructed by the local warrant chief, Okugu, to carry out a census of women in preparation for their taxation, entered the compound of a woman named Nwanyeruwa and told her to begin counting her animals. She replied angrily that people had died from colonial counting, and insulted him and his mother by demanding of him, "Was your mother counted?" Emeruwa, enraged, grabbed her by the throat and tried to throttle her. She, her hands wet with oil from the palm nuts she had been pounding, smeared his Western-style suit with the red sticky stuff. He ran off to Okugu's compound to tell him of the events. The warrant chief summoned her to his dwelling and insisted she would pay the tax, threatening her with deep trouble and promising that "when the District Officer comes, he will take charge of you." To a woman uncertain of what lay in store under the British legal system, his threat could well have meant she would be executed. Upon hearing of Okugu's treatment of Nwanyeruwa, a large crowd of women surrounded his compound. There they "sat on" him, a locally recognized practice undertaken when men committed offenses against women. When "sitting on a man," women danced and sang until the object of their grievance acknowledged his offense and promised to make restitution. In this particular instance, the chief not only refused to admit to any wrong-doing, he set male members of his compound on the women, causing injury to eight of them. In response to Okugu's transgressions-entirely out of step with the expectations of his office-and owing to the persistent rumors of taxation of women circulating in other towns and villages, enormous crowds of women-amounting to tens of thousands-attacked native courts, looted banks, and stormed a number of European warehouses in a variety of towns and villages in southeastern Nigeria"--
