Abstract: This book discusses how climate change needs to be anchored in indigenous knowledge with reference to resource management, infrastructure, livelihoods, and social institutions, with a unique focus on risks and provenances of resilience available to the local communities. Beyond the scientific know-how on climate change, this volume highlights traditional wisdom, which through its hands-on learning plays a crucial role in amalgamation with cross-scale understanding. It documents the deliberations of a seminar that brought together traditional wisdom and cross-scale understanding of academicians, researchers, practitioners, and grassroots functionaries directly or indirectly working with communities in the area of climate change adaptation and thereby brings together adaptation and allied practices from across a spectrum of specialties and practitioner contexts. It discusses several insights and novel practices and is purported to provide significant research and policy implications in the spirit of thinking globally but acting locally. Abstract: This book uses complexity thinking to explore China’s demography and population-driven geopolitics within and beyond mainland China. From a multidisciplinary perspective, the book is relevant to the debates of Chinese demography studies and politics of contemporary China. It combines international relations approaches, demography research, and legal studies to conceive the recent demographic trends and social transformations in China and across the world. The book prioritizes the anthropological viewpoint to provide a better understanding of demographic phenomena and combine an anthropological demography perspective with complexity thinking and geopolitics. This book will interest scholars of China, of geopolitics, and demographers. Armando Aliu is Assistant Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Poland). Abstract: This book proposes alternative ways to engage with computer security, rooted in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and extensive ethnographic observations. Computer security, the author argues, is part of living in the Anthropocene – an age of damaged more-than-human relations. As such, doing computer security means not striving for technical solutions, or individual awareness, but living with fragility. The book suggests conceptual approaches and methods of studying computer security which contribute to current debates on infrastructural breakdown and ecological ruins in STS and Anthropology, while offering new perspectives to Usable Security and Critical Security Studies. Abstract: This book offers a meticulous empirical examination of Chinese democracy and its myriad discourses. Delving into the intricate workings of Chinese democracy, the author explores how the Chinese Communist Party employs democratic principles, how intellectuals grapple with the concept, and how the populace perceives and engages with democracy. In transcending mere methodological nationalism, this narrative extends to the global stage, offering insights into democratic evolution beyond Western paradigms by exploring resonates particularly with developing and post-colonial countries, offering a fresh perspective on the delicate balance between state capacity, social order, and the democratization process. While the trajectory of democracy in China remains uncertain, these empirically grounded analyses provide a pragmatic lens through which to contemplate the future of Chinese political dynamics. Abstract: This book aims at explaining romantic love between straight adults through literary texts of the western canon from the nineteenth and twentieth century. Each chapter comes with a multidisciplinary approach in which protagonists are mutilated in their quest for loving as alternative to annihilation. The book emphasizes love as an obsession, thus as an exploration of the mind. From the passion-myth of Tristan and Isolde to the nihilist modernist representations, the western world has created a perverse concept of love. A love for nothingness, for death. Narcissistic and at times destructive, love is gained by overcoming obstacles. If without obstacles there is no love, then love becomes love for obstacles. Within this masochistic frame, love, falling in love, being loved always stand at the edge of pathology. At its core this book narrates a love story, more precisely a story of loves, the haunting evocation of a desire that by its very nature cannot be fulfilled. Inherent in the nature of love is a subtle dialectical activity between presence and absence, between creation and destruction, reality and void. Accordingly, the narrative raises questions that the past two centuries were incapable of answering. Does love only last the time of a kiss? Is its promise fatally destined to dissolve? What about violence? Physical, emotional, temporal. Is it an ineliminable part of love or its most extreme profanation? And what is the mystery that accompanies loves that know how to last without resigning themselves to the death of desire? It is to answer some of these questions that I wrote this text. Love is an unconscious process that dominates reason and destroys it when reason cannot be a mode of communication. Hence, the amorous romance is madness and this text is written as a loud reminder. Endorsement A unique and surprising book about love. A book that goes against the grain, offering the reader an evocative feeling of suspension between desire and the uncertainty of its fulfilment. A daring book whose reading is a must because it offers a new perspective not yet encountered elsewhere. Barbara Sonzogni - Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.

Abstract: This book analyzes the process of leaving school, commonly referred to as 'transition' for young adults with severe, complex, and multiple disabilities. It seeks to challenge prevailing assumptions and offer practical steps towards reversing customary accepted theories, methods, practices, and outcomes. Despite extensive research, policies, and procedures of transition, the reality is that post-school outcomes are worrying for those with significant special needs. Community inclusion depends as much upon in-school procedures and support systems as it does the inclusivity of society itself. This book directly addresses these concerns by examining the experiences of young adults living through their transitions in two countries, Aotearoa New Zealand and the USA. Engaging and highly readable case narratives bring fresh insights on the diversity of disability experiences, portraying the under-explored opportunities involved in a transition with dignity. Disability isan often overlooked aspect of one’s intersectional identity. Post-school transition is therefore positioned less as a procedural function of leaving school and more so an urgent matter of social justice. Readers will benefit from the transformative framing of post-school transition based on the capability approach. Genuine opportunities within the transition of young adults with significant disabilities and those who support them may promote a thriving life for all. Sarah M. Hart is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, USA. She completed a PhD in Education at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her international work focuses on post-school transitions, engaging a capability theory of social justice and an inclusive qualitative research paradigm to examine equity in special education through the perspectives of young adults with significant disability.

Abstract: This edited volume fills a gap in current research on asylum seekers and refugees. By focusing on two East Asian countries, Japan and Taiwan, this volume offers material for comparison and reflection on an area of the world in which this theme is still relatively underdeveloped. By approaching the theme through the different perspectives of human rights, social construction through media representation and public opinion, and lived experiences, the book offers a multifaceted and sophisticated analysis of the phenomenon. The main aim of this collection is to expand current scholarship on refugee studies and offer policy recommendations on the timely topic of refugee and asylum seekers in East Asia. Abstract: Introduction -- Metadiscourse: Different Approaches and Perspectives -- Metadiscourse Research: Theoretical Frameworks and Empirical Studies in China -- Metadiscourse: Definition and Categorizations -- Interaction in Chinese Scholars’ English Research Articles -- Interaction in Chinese Scholars’ Chinese Research Articles -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book tracks changes in the use of metadiscourse in Chinese scholars’ English and Chinese research articles, discusses how these changes reflect changes in Chinese scholars’ interactions with their peers in China and outside China, and analyzes how Chinese scholars are responding to changes in the academic context that embrace and shape rhetorical practices in the academic world. Around the turn of the twenty-first century, the Chinese government declared the goal of “enhancing international soft power,” and one important way to achieve this goal is to promote China’s global academic influence. China has indeed made remarkable strides in terms of academic output by publishing Chinese scholars’ research papers and monographs around the world. However, “international soft power” means more than just the export of papers or books; it means connecting to and participating in the academic world. For this to happen, Chinese scholars must get to know their international counterparts, understand their rhetorical preferences, and be willing (and able) to accommodate their needs.

Abstract: This book identifies the formation, development and changes in New Zealand perceptions of its Asian neighbours, the work of which is based mainly on New Zealand sources—newspaper reports, Government and Parliamentary papers and documents from New Zealand individuals and organisations. The target audience is those with interest in how European perceptions of Asia were formed in the 19th century and Asia's response to those perceptions and how a country with a strong European culture copes with the need to better integrate with Asian neighbours. Abstract: This book engages the concept of necropolitics to present a vision of how to understand the physical body as a space of power and resistance to social order, in the context of the Kashmir resistance. The author sheds new light on the relations between India and Pakistan, with a focus on tensions over the Kashmir region, in order to better understand the emergence and stabilization of the narrative that criminalizes and thus justifies the population that rebels against state actions in the region. The research draws from archival and interview research and presents the reader with new insight into both conceptual and material dimensions of necropolitics. Abstract: This book traces the rise of the far right AfD from its inception in 2013 to its re-election to the Bundestag in 2021, emphasizing the party’s nature as a “populist issue entrepreneur” and covering the three major crises that have shaken European party politics – the Eurozone crisis, the so-called refugee crisis, and the COVID pandemic. Currently, books on the topic of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) are largely limited to historical treatments and surface level analyses of the political party. This volume has the virtue of being both empirically rigorous as well as conceptually nuanced: it seeks to understand the party’s political trajectory and attraction to supporters by analyzing its voters using advanced quantitative methodologies, as well as interpreting the party’s communication strategies through mixed empirical methods. It embeds this account within a theoretically well-grounded argument. The argument emphasizes three important explanatory conditions – a favorable political opportunity structure, issue entrepreneurship, and the party’s stages of political development. Michael A. Abstract: GLOBAL ISSUES Series Editors: Jim Whitman · Paolo D. Farah This comparative law book aims at formulating a new analytical approach to constitutional comparisons, assuming as a starting point the different legal perspectives implied in the (Sunni) Islamic outlook on the juridical phenomena and the Western concept of law, with particular reference to constitutionalism. The volume adopts a wider and comprehensive viewpoint, comparing the different ways in which the Islamic sharī ʿa and Western legal categories interact, regardless of substantive contents of specific provisions, thus avoiding conceptual biases that can sometime affect present literature on the matter. The book explores the various dynamics subtended to the interactions between sharī ʿa and Western constitutionalism, providing a new classification to the different contemporary models. The philosophical and legal comparisons are analyzed in a dynamic way, based on a wide range of contemporary constitutional systems, virtually encompassing all the States in which Sunni Islam plays a major cultural role, and taking also into consideration non-State actors and non-recognized actors. Abstract: "This powerful collection shows that 'public value' has come of age. Launched in the 1990s mainly as an inspirational heuristic for public managers, it has matured well. It has philosophical debate about the nature and purpose of government and public service. It has informed an ever expanding array of empirical studies across sectors and levels of government. Its reach has extended far beyond the Anglosphere from which it has emerged. And it provides a prism for strategic thinking about how governments are to deal with the grittiness of the contexts and challenge they currently face. This must-read volume sits at the cutting edge of these important developments." —Paul 't Hart, Professor of Public Administration, Utrecht University, The Netherlands "Challenges to Public Value Creation is a wonderful addition to the growing literature on public value creation. The authors engage deeply with the many challenges – especially those related to authority, process, and complexity – in trying to produce what the public values and is also good for the public in democratic societies. Academics and reflective practitioners will find great value in this book!" —John M. Bryson, McKnight Presidential Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota, USA “The purpose of government is to create public value.” While this has become an increasingly accepted refrain in public policy, administration, and management, numerous questions remain about how where, when, why, how, and by whom public value is created. With everything from philosophical and conceptual arguments to empirical analyses and cases, the contributors to this noteworthy volume begin to address those questions. In doing so, they offer new ideas, reveal important insights, suggest exciting directions for research and practice, and ultimately give more substance and shape to the idea of public value creation." —Tina Nabatchi, Joseph A. Strasser Endowed Professor in Public Administration, Syracuse University, USA This volume examines fundamental questions about the public value of public decisions. More specifically, it seeks to assess whether all public decisions create public value, if it is possible to know what value for the public as a whole a government decision will create, and how government officials can justify their decisions in terms of public value. Leading experts bring a diverse array of perspectives on the normative, epistemological, and processual challenges to identifying, describing, measuring, and evaluating the public value claims that public officials often articulate in defending their decisions, and the results that citizens often seek. The book will appeal to scholars and students of public policy and public administration. Brian J. Cook is Emeritus Professor of Public Administration and Policy at Virginia Tech, USA. Abstract: This book is the first systematic effort to investigate the ramifications of the introduction of the Spitzenkandidaten process for the appointment of the President of the European Commission. It does so by examining the first two applications of the Spitzenkandidaten process from an historical, legal and political perspective. Although this process has spurred vibrant debate regarding its impact on EU elections and the EU political system, it has yet to be comprehensively analysed by scholars. Addressing this important gap, the book provides a conceptual framework for analysing the impact of the Spitzenkandidaten process, takes stock of its internal, inter-institutional and constitutional repercussions, and assesses its future prospects. Interdisciplinary in nature, the book touches on several important themes, including European elections, EU policy making, leadership, legitimacy, supranationalism and European integration. Published to coincide with the 2024 European Parliament election, it will appeal to scholars and students of the politics of European integration, public administration, governance, European politics and EU constitutional law. Abstract: This book offers an innovative take on the study of Chinese academic history, approaching the subject from the perspective of broader social and cultural developments, one that is not only comprehensive and inclusive, but also sheds new light on the subject. The book investigates the main academic developments of the Han Dynasty, such as the formation of new-Confucianism and the new-Daoism of Han, the establishment of history studies, advances in astronomy and geography, breakthroughs in agronomy and hydraulics, and the achievements in traditional Chinese medicine. It also explores the cultural and political backgrounds, the main influencing factors, and the main features of academic developments, especially academic carriers and Chinese hermeneutics. It provides a new paradigm for academic history studies and includes many new theories, e.g., the reconstruction of the pre-Qin academics by the Han scholars. This book offers a unique resource for all those who want to learn about and understand Chinese history and culture, especially the academic history of the Han Dynasty.

Abstract: This book offers a history of migration in the Mediterranean written about and from the perspective of women. It gives a complex picture of individual journeys of migrant women, and in a radical departure from the miserabilist or culturalist approach through which women are usually viewed, and instead argues for a politically and socially aware feminism that is attuned to what border-obsessed migration policies actually do to women. The book depicts the journey of women as they experience brutal separations and make heart-wrenching decisions, but also as they make acquaintances and find new opportunities. The first-person accounts collected here demonstrate that the reasons behind these women’s decision to leave are anything but simple and linear: they combine various forms of persecution and oppression with a desire for autonomy. The book further explores the daily lives of women in reception centres as they wait for a Europe that rejects them to acknowledge their presence. At the same time, this study shows that these women are taking charge of their own destinies and journeys. This accordingly puts the space of everyday life front and centre. Such a space acts as an impediment to these women’s journeys: it generates a “moralscape” of waiting, which plays a key role in these women’s daily lives. However, it can also help these women gain greater autonomy, thus empowering them. Camille Schmoll is Research Director at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Fellow of the Institut Convergences Migrations, and a member of the Géographie-cités research centre, France. Her work explores migration from an ethnographic perspective, with a particular focus on the making of border-places (e.g. islands, cities, neighbourhoods) and the trajectories of migrant women. She was Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales from 2019 to 2022, and has authored, co-authored and co-edited several books in French, Italian and English.

Abstract: This book explores the different forms of populism in European countries. Starting from a theoretical point of view, the authors outline the various psycho-social precursors of populisms that have emerged from empirical investigations. Using both mainstream and critical perspectives, the book shows how the field has stimulated multiple research programs and methodologies. The opinions, attitudes, and representations of lay persons and some populist leaders are analysed through questionnaires and analysis of political communication via social media. The volume is aimed at researchers, students, and readers with good expertise on the subject. It collects contributions from scholars in the psychological-social field, proposing an innovative reading on the social-cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes that can lead to adhering to populism. Gilda Sensales is Associate Professor in Social and Political psychology at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Her main research interests are the representations of populism, political communication between mainstream and new media, gender and sexism in politics, critical history of social psychology.

Abstract: Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: The Origins of Conflict In Somalia: A Historical Context -- Chapter 3: Clan Configuration and Identity Networks in Somalia -- Chapter 4: Spatial (Un)Governance and Its Application in Somalia -- Chapter 5: Complexity of Somalia Conflict: Features and Actors -- Chapter 6: Socio-Economic and Political Consequences of the Somali Conflict -- Chapter 7: Impact of the Somali Conflict on National and Regional Security -- Chapter 8: Conclusion.
Abstract: This book aims to examine how informality of spatial governance has influenced the evolution of the conflict in Somalia and the region. It not only reopens the debate over how the irregular conflicts can transcend national boundaries, but also presents the complexities of spatial governance on national and regional security. The book examines how socio-political and identity bonds play out in spatial governance sometimes resulting to informal control of vast national territories. The book argues that such informally governed spaces increase the level of security threat vulnerability at the national and regional levels. The book therefore adds to the existing literature which has not only to be dominated by discourses on the impact of identity on the conflict but also fall short of connecting the impact of informal spatial governance on security. Examining how informality in governance in one country can impact on the security of an entire region is a key consideration in emerging peacebuilding strategies. Abstract: This book contends that the development of modern Chinese international thought has been profoundly shaped by the distinctive nature of the Chinese state as a contender state and its global positioning since 1912. The argument posited demonstrates that, notwithstanding the varied perspectives on the 'international' held by Chinese intellectuals throughout the 20th century, there exist commonalities across the periods analyzed in this book. In essence, the book emphasizes that the shared elements influencing the production of modern Chinese international thought do not derive from a unified cultural Chinese identity but rather stem from China's evolving geopolitical position in the modern world. Dr. Ferran Perez Mena is an Assistant Professor in International Relations of East Asia at Durham University. Ferran holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Sussex. His current research focuses on the intricate interplay among Chinese IR scholars, the Chinese state, and the production of normative perspectives on world order. Additionally, his work explores transnational connections between Western and Chinese intellectual and economic elites.

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of ‘societal deception’ - how and why people are deceived and led to believe fake news. Coherently blending critical political economy and sociology, the author provocatively examines how corporations, political parties, the media, think tanks and assorted 'influencers' seek to manipulate public opinion to achieve their goals. This book spans an array of contemporary topics and issues not normally tackled by a single writer – the media, genetic engineering, fast food, environmental pollution, climate change, economic inequality, political manipulations, sports, and religion. While critical in subject matter, and replete with easily accessible and reliable sources, this book is highly readable and entertaining for the general as well as academic audience interested in current global issues.

Abstract: This open access book explores the ‘polycrisis’ currently affecting nearly all nations by exploring key themes such as multilateralism and globalization from the perspective of think tanks from nearly every continent, searching for various solutions to the ills that currently plague the world and a way to create a future in which everyone benefits. As China’s preeminent non-governmental think tank, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) has invited 30 leading figures from the global think tank community to sift through the myriad layers of multilateralism and global governance and provide a contextual analysis of major themes both from a theoretical and practical perspective that focus on China in detail, but also examine the world as a whole. Think tanks are essential in analyzing current trends and providing potential solutions that aid governments, international organizations and business in finding solutions that are beneficial to all. As a key source of innovative ideas, they have become even more valuable today as the pace of change accelerates, geopolitical complexity increases and the world has to deal with global crises that no country can address on their own. A common, central theme through all of the 25 essays in this book is the need for a more universal, inclusive and multilateral approach to reforming global governance. It is our hope that the views of the experts from think tanks and other non-governmental organizations in this compilation will provide valuable insights to help heal the gaps in our fragmented world. .

Abstract: ‘The Cultural Revolution is a challenging research topic in the field of contemporary Chinese studies. The attraction of this book is the introduction of the “citizenship” and “collective violence” concepts to analyze the Cultural Revolution in a political, sociological style. It succeeds in explaining the complex phenomenon of the subject.’ --Mori Kazuko, emeritus professor of Waseda University, Japan 'Yang Lijun examines how the state structured the institutional framework in a way that led groups to compete for their interests by inevitably hurting the interests of other groups. Changes in the leadership also reverberated through this structure in ways that further exacerbated tensions and led to violence. this carefully researched book provides a persuasive lens for viewing the tensions and violence in this critical period of PRC history.’ --Joseph Fewsmith, Professor of Boston University, US 'Yang Lijun’s book develops an interesting institutional approach to the study of factional struggle and escalation of collective violence through this turbulent period of modern Chinese history. It deepens our understanding of the interaction between various factions as well as between factions and the political leadership.' --Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark This book has been groundbreaking for scholars of the Cultural Revolution, but hitherto was only available in Japanese and Chinese. This edition allows English-language readers to access the work for the first time. The author explains how political struggles within the state, competing sectarian interests, and other complex factors intertwined to produce various forms of collective violence that had a major impact on the political, economic, and social order of the time. Yang Lijun is Professor of Sociology at the Institute of Public Policy at South China University of Technology. She studied social changes and movements in contemporary China. Translator Bio Peter Cuthbert is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University - Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies. Abstract: The Palgrave Handbook of European Migration in Literature and Culture engages with migration to, within, and from Europe, foregrounding migration through the lenses of historical migratory movement and flows associated with colonialism and postcolonialism. With essays on literature, film, drama, graphic novels, and more, the book addresses migration and media, hostile environments, migration and language, migration and literary experiment, migration as palimpsest, and figurations of the migrant. Each section is introduced by one of the handbook's contributing editors and interviews with writers and film directors are integrated throughout the volume. The essays collected in the volume move beyond the discourse of the "refugee crisis" to trace the historical roots of the current migration situation through colonialism and decolonization

Abstract: This book features original papers from 27th International Symposium on Frontiers of Research in Speech and Music (FRSM 2023), jointly organized by Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat, India, and Sir C.V. Raman Centre for Physics and Music, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, during 4–5 August 2023. The book is organized into four main sections, considering both technological advancement and interdisciplinary nature of speech, music, language and their applications. The first section includes chapters related to computational, modelling and cognitive aspects of the speech signal. The second part contains chapters covering the foundations of both vocal and instrumental music processing with the signal, computational and cognitive aspects. The third section relates to the variety of research being done in the peripheral areas of languages and linguistics with special focus on regional languages of India. A lot of research is being performed within the speech and music information retrieval domain which is potentially interesting for most users of computers and the Internet. Therefore, the fourth and final section is dedicated to the chapters related to multidisciplinary applications of speech and music signal processing.

Abstract: This book offers a key analysis of the changing perceptions of family in East Asian societies and the dynamic metamorphosis of “traditional” family units through the twentieth century and into the new millennium. The book focuses on investigations of the Asian family as it is represented in literature, film, and other visual media emerging from within China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, and on contestations of the power hegemonies and moral codes that underpin such representations, while also assessing Western and global influences on the Asian family. Individually and collectively, these essays examine traditions and transformations in the evolving conception of family itself and bring together a range of scholars from within and beyond the region to reflect upon the social and cultural mores represented in these texts, the issues that concern Asian families, and projections for future families in their own societies and in a globalized world. Through the written text and the lens of the camera, what directions has the understanding of family in an Asian context taken in the twenty-first century? How have the multiple platforms of media represented, encouraged, or resisted transitions during this time? Amid broader and mutating referential frameworks and cross-cultural influences, is the traditional concept of the “nuclear family” still relevant in the twenty-first century? This book lends further prominence to the diverse literary and cinematic production within East Asia and the eclectic range of media used to represent these ideas. It will be essential reading for scholars of literature, film studies, and Asian studies, and for those with an interest in the cultural and sociological implications of the changing definitions and parameters of the family unit. Abstract: This edited book represents one of the first scholarly research through an international collaboration project between Japan and Italy to address economic and social values of cultural heritage beyond its inherent—historic, archaeological, or aesthetic—values. Cultural policies in the world have over the decades expanded to include non-cultural purposes such as economic development and social inclusion. Japanese cultural policy for heritage is catching up on this trend: we have seen major shifts of emphasis from preservation for its sake to the utilisation of cultural heritage for the purposes of tourism, place branding, local vitalization and community-building, whilst Italy has long thrived on the economy of heritage tourism and more cases are being seen for urban and regional development with the use of cultural assets. The recent outbreak of Covid-19 and the problem of over-tourism that preceded it have challenged tourism policy and practice in the two countries. This book identifies emerging trends, issues, and problems in such policy shifts. The book breaks a new ground in the bourgeoning studies of tourism, heritage, and cultural policy by adopting an international, inter-disciplinary approach. The chapters on Japan in particular make an original contribution to these fields in the English literature in which discussion of Japan despite its economic and cultural presence on the globe has hitherto been less available.

Abstract: This is an open access book. Modern society is characterized by the fact of contingency, uncertainty, and ambiguity. The purpose of this book is to transform this phenomenal fact into a hopeful norm. As a clue, the book examines the concept of dignity and looks forward to a new definition. So far, the concept of dignity has been peripheral to the concerns of liberal social sciences. This book uses the concept of dignity as a source of light to illuminate the fundamental critique of liberal social sciences and philosophy. Can the theory of justice or discourse ethics truly realize the well-defined society it envisions in a fundamentally contingent, uncertain, and ambiguous situation? Can societies be inclusive of minorities relegated to the periphery with their dignity undermined? Can we resist the temptation to construct huge hierarchical stairs, forcing individuals to place themselves on one of its steps, and thus lining up different and diverse entities in a long sequence, and eventually bringing about totalitarianism? This book has a three-level telescopic structure. At the very front, there is a scope of reexaming the political liberalism in the light of dignity. Behind it is a scope of reconstructing a theory of justice in modern society. Further behind it, there is a scope encompassing reflection on the methodology of liberal social sciences and philosophy. We leave it to the reader's imagination as to which scope to read this book through, and what image will emerge from the three scopes taken together. It is our hope that this book helps readers envision as a "realistic utopia" a society in which "no one is left behind," including wounded little birds.

Abstract: Nearly 70 years after Elizabeth Colson and Ted Scudder began their pioneering research on the social and environmental impacts associated with the construction of the Kariba dam, Joshua Matanzima presents us with a 21st century sequel. In rich ethnographic detail, the author tells the stories of the people whose lives are interlinked with this megastructure and its reservoir lake. Of particular interest is the chapter on religious aspects of Lake Kariba, a topic that has received very little academic attention thus far. An important contribution, of interest to any researcher focusing on the past, present and future of large dams. - Dr Christopher Schulz, University of St Andrews, UK. This book is an exploration of one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs, Lake Kariba, created along the Zambezi River in central Africa. Originally built for electricity generation, as the lake reached its full capacity in 1963 it attracted other socioeconomic activities such as tourism, recreation, fisheries, and conservation. The material properties of the waterscape (including waves, strong winds, water volumes, deities and aquatic species) have shaped these socioeconomic activities since its creation. Community interpretations of the reservoir feature stories of fear, death, income generation, livelihoods, illegal cross-border trade, religion and everyday conflicts with wild animals. Drawing on extended ethnographic research and the author’s personal experience growing up around Lake Kariba, this empirically-rich book provides a nuanced discussion of the ways in which the waterscape shapes people’s lives and livelihoods. Additionally, the book explores the challenges of sustaining and preserving Lake Kariba's unique ecosystem amidst environmental pressures and competing demands for resources. Readers will gain a nuanced perspective of the significance of the lake, its relationship with neighboring communities, and its evolution over time. Joshua Matanzima (PhD) is a Research Officer at the University of Queensland, Australia. He has co-edited several books including Lived Experiences of Borderland Communities in Zimbabwe and Tonga Livelihoods in Rural Zimbabwe.

Abstract: This volume offers a critical examination of how counterterrorism measures influence democratic processes, with a specific focus on the case study of post-2011 Tunisia. More concretely, it assesses the effects of counterterrorist discourses and practices on the democratic transition initiated after the Dignity Revolution of 2010-2011. Tunisia has been the only Arab country to experience a structured democratic transition after the Arab uprisings. However, the measures taken to counter the rise of salafi jihadism in the country strongly marked the transitional process. This research analyses the detrimental impact of counterterrorism on Tunisian political transition and democratic consolidation. It highlights human rights violations and their legitimization, the strengthening of repressive mechanisms, the enactment of liberticidal laws, the normalization of exceptional governance, and the constriction of public space, while also detailing its negative effects on the state's economy. The book posits that the counterterrorism rhetoric and policies have played a significant role in facilitating the democratic backsliding witnessed in Tunisia beginning in 2021. The research adopts a discursive-ethnographic approach that integrates critical analysis of presidential and parliamentary discourse with extensive fieldwork among institutional and associative actors in Tunisia. The volume represents the first comprehensive and holistic assessment of counterterrorism discourses and policies implemented in post-2011 Tunisia, highlighting their progressive impact on democratic transition. Abstract: 1 Introduction and context -- Shaping the field: Normative Power Europe, the EU climate norm and EU (climate) diplomacy -- 3 Performing normative EU climate diplomacy: An analytical framework -- 4 Internal EU climate diplomacy: Opening the black box -- 5 Performing normative climate diplomacy at the international level -- 6 Concluding remarks: Navigating in uncharted seas and skies.
Abstract: “George Dikaios has addressed in his research a missing link for a better understanding of how climate diplomacy is delivered in the EU. The trinity analytical framework that he is proposing is a fresh and necessary change in the way the EU acts in the international arena. Focus on transport and especially maritime and aviation who are among the biggest polluters, validates his points even stronger. With this book, we got an important tool for better utilization of climate diplomacy and possible ways forward for stronger resilience and climate problem-solving.” --Dr Violeta Bulc, engineer, innovator, former European Commissioner for Transport This book delves into the topic of the European climate diplomacy and the ways it is performed, both internally in terms of constructing a negotiating position, and externally in regards to how the European Union (EU) as a whole exports this position at the international level. To do that, the analytical framework is built around two major pillars: first, the literature on European public policy, specifically regarding policymaking, and second, the Normative Power Europe approach. Aiming to test whether European climate diplomacy actually works, the book utilizes two examples/case studies, namely the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The selection of these examples is based on an array of rationales, but the main reason is that both international organizations (IOs) do not contribute (at least their fair share) in the global efforts of tackling climate change. The book thus showcases the strategically driven efforts of the EU as whole to export its climate norm to these two IOs. It argues that, if it weren’t for the EU, these two organizations would not have been active in negotiating on climate change issues to such extent. George Dikaios is affiliated to the Department of Political Science and Public Administration & the Department of Ports Management and Shipping of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is also a Senior Research Fellow of the UNESCO Chair on Climate Diplomacy.

Abstract: This edited book aims to present a well-balanced view on the heated debate about BRI’s “debt trap” controversy within the route states by presenting compelling evidence from Asian and African countries. It is contributed by the university scholars, think tank experts, and governmental officials from the concerned parties such as China, USA, South/Southeast Asia, and Africa to discuss this new topic from their perspectives. It not only examines the origins and changes in external debt among the BRI route states before and after the launch of the BRI, but also analyzes the outcomes stemming from BRI projects. The book covers 12 chapters, in which the first chapter briefly introduces the aims and scope of this book. The following 2 chapters look at Chinese and Indian perspectives on the “debt trap”, respectively. The next 9 chapters examine the debt issue and BRI projects in Southeast Asian, South Asian, and African states, which mainly involve Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Nigeria, and give some useful policy suggestions to reduce the debt burden and promote the socioeconomic development in these countries.

Abstract: This book provides an account of the transformation of Chinese stakeholders' engagement in Internet governance, from normative contestation to integration, and from isolation to an industrial leadership role. The book concludes that Chinese stakeholders are not seeking to fragment the Internet but are rather integrating in the existing global Internet governance mechanisms while adopting strong regulation domestically. This counters a widespread media (and academic) narrative on China as the promoter of an alternative Internet and/or an alternative model of Internet governance. These conclusions are reached through a mix of qualitative methods, including interviews with people involved first-hand in Internet governance, such as technologists engaged in the making of Internet and mobile connectivity standards. Riccardo Nanni is Researcher in Data Governance at Fondazione Bruno Kessler's Digital Commons Lab. He obtained a Ph.D. in International Relations (June 2022) from the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna (Italy). His Ph.D. thesis discussed the influence of Chinese public and private stakeholders in Internet governance, particularly the making and distribution of Internet and mobile connectivity standards.

Abstract: The volume delves into the intricate web of contemporary permacrisis rooted in the strategic imperatives of nation-states. Through a historical lens, it navigates the evolving landscape of international politics, tracing the transition of power dynamics from purely military to a fusion of economic and military prowess. The contributions in the volume argue that this shift has redefined the traditional balance of power, with economic instruments emerging as potent tools for geopolitical manoeuvring. Examining the interplay of geopolitical, geoeconomic, and security imperatives, it scrutinises the complex relationships that often perpetuate crises instead of global stability. It sheds light on the unprecedented hybridity of modern warfare, where military and economic dimensions intertwine, exemplified by the ongoing tensions between the liberal international order on the one hand, and Russia and China on the other. Recognising this complexity, the volume raises concerns about the uneven capacity of states to navigate these imperatives. Beneficial for specialists in International Relations and Strategic Studies, policymakers, security experts, scholars, and postgraduate students, this comprehensive volume offers insights into the intricate dynamics of geopolitics, political economy, and security issues of our time. Abstract: This book explores the discursive dimension of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It analyzes how political leaders, mass media, social media, and ordinary people in Ukraine, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France discuss the war. War propaganda and counterpropaganda structure discourses about the invasion, strengthening post-truth conditions. The book highlights the consequences of the growing distrust in the institutional truth-teller, mass media. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the first social media war. Social media became the principal source of information about the invasion. The rise of digital media did not change the tendency of the discourses about war to be territorially segregated according to national boundaries. Nationalization of discourses about war continues to prevail over their globalization. The corpora containing more than 180 million words in four languages inform the analysis. The data was collected during the first year and a half of Russia’s all-out war in Ukraine. Abstract: "Tour-de-force on ICRP – the book narrates how, “a strong, science-based but value-laden ‘epistemic community’ regulates a controversial area of human endeavor (radiation) on global basis.” By doing so, Daniel optimistically calls on world bodies to learn and mimic similar pathways to solve global problems such as air pollution, toxic chemicals and even climate change" --Dr M. Mahesh Professor of Radiology & Cardiology Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, USA "A fascinating tale of how the standards for radiation dosage came about – not through an international convention, or by inter-governmental agreement but by doctors on the job and scientists in different countries debating and critiquing each other’s work. There is a lot to learn from the process as it unfolded." ---Roy Gutman, Pulitzer-prize journalist and president, Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs, USA This book is intended to examine the history of radiation protection up to the present from the perspective of regime theory, with a view to elucidating what this case teaches about how a strong regime in a controversial area can form and maintain itself. This is a particularly relevant issue at present when the overall international rules-based order is under threat and scientific authority doubted. There are significant parallels between the international radiation protection regime and efforts to slow climate change, stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons, manage the applications of artificial intelligence, control the use of drones, and confront the risks posed by pandemics. While each has its own dynamics, all these issues involve the interaction of scientific discovery and expertise with the societies that generate them. Learning what works and what does not is vital if we are to limit harm and ensure survival of humanity on a shrinking and warming planet.
