Abstract: "This edited collection sheds light on how the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing social issues, and it stresses the importance of understanding, analyzing, and critiquing law and policy decisions during times of crisis. Specifically, it brings together a diverse array of scholarly work that highlights various legal and policy-related topics, including litigations, zoombombing, international students' experiences, violence against women, sex workers' health, governmental crisis responses, neo-vagrancy laws, and educational issues. The collection offers multi-disciplinary scholarly insights, preliminary research findings, legal and public policy analysis, and educational guidelines to address unprecedented socio-legal and psychological impacts on society that have evolved since the onset of the pandemic. Further, these chapters add to the ongoing dialogue about how North American society can improve by exploring dilemmas and highlighting opportunities for positive change. Thus, this collection sheds light on how vulnerable communities have been disproportionately impacted by governments' policies and laws since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it aims to give a different perspective on how we can move forward and use these occurring issues to create more justice in a post-COVID society"--

Abstract: An innovative analysis of Indigenous strategies for overcoming the settler state. How do bureaucratic documents create and reproduce a state's capacity to see? What kinds of worlds do documents help create? Further, how might such documentary practices and settler colonial ways of seeing be refused?Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing investigates how the Canadian state has used documents, lists, and databases to generate, make visible-and invisible-Indigenous identity. With an archive of legislative documents, registration forms, identity cards, and reports, Danielle Taschereau Mamers traces the political and media history of Indian status in Canada, demonstrating how paperwork has been used by the state to materialize identity categories in the service of colonial governance. Her analysis of bureaucratic artifacts is led by the interventions of Indigenous artists, including Robert Houle, Nadia Myre, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, and Rebecca Belmore. Bringing together media theories of documentation and the strategies of these artists, Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing develops a method for identifying how bureaucratic documents mediate power relations as well as how those relations may be disobeyed and re-imagined.By integrating art-led inquiry with media theory and settler colonial studies approaches, Taschereau Mamers offers a political and media history of the documents that have reproduced Indian status. More importantly, she provides us with an innovative guide for using art as a method of theorizing decolonial political relations. This is a crucial book for any reader interested in the intersection of state archives, settler colonial studies, and visual culture in the context of Canada's complex and violent relationship with Indigenous peoples

Abstract: "Defence procurement has bedeviled governments in Canada, and indeed around the world, for decades. Jeffrey Collins provides an important contribution to finding a better way forward. A must-read for current and aspiring leaders." - Michael Wernick, Clerk of the Privy Council (2016-2019), Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management, University of Ottawa and author of Governing Canada. "If everyone in the business reads this book, Canada saves billions buying kit and it's instantly the most valuable book ever published." - Dr. Ian Brodie, Professor of Political Science, University of Calgary, Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Stephen Harper (2006-2008) and author of At the Centre of Government. "This well-research and authoritative book takes a commonly misunderstood and often maligned process, sheds light on its many challenges, and offers some potentially pragmatic solutions. It is a “should read” for anyone interested in this important topic; and, a “must read” for government officials, elected representatives and media pundits alike.” - Mark Norman, Vice-Admiral, Royal Canadian Navy (Ret’d) This book challenges the perceived underlying causes and culprits of the ongoing challenges in Canadian defence procurement, arguing that although headlines often put the blame on the political leadership, the defence procurement bureaucracy, ongoing pressures in the defence industry and continuous demands placed on Canada though its alliances also carry a large part of the responsibility. Focusing on four main case studies: the Fixed Wing Search and Rescue Plane, the Joint Support Ships, the Medium Support Vehicle System and the Halifax Class Modernization, the author offers a comparative analysis of how these ongoing procurement efforts were dealt with by different administrations, from Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin to Stephen Harper. Jeffrey F. Collins is Adjunct Professor at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Abstract: "For some time, scholars have devoted considerable attention to the law as a force of repression, one that replicates and enforces structural inequalities through violence and legally sanctioned modes of punishment. But it is the means by which the law functions as a tool of governmentality that occupies the contributors to this volume. Through the exploration of how to deconstruct law's power, how to expose the violence the law produces, and finally how to identify modes of resistance that have transformative potential, these essays contribute to the ongoing interrogation of settler colonialism, racism, and structural violence in Canada."--

Abstract: "Unguarded Border: American Émigrés in Canada during the Vietnam War examines one of the largest exoduses from the United States, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when over 50,000 Americans immigrated to Canada during the Vietnam War. For many this emigration was the best way for them to resist military service. Women and non-draft-age men also left to accompany draft-age men or to escape the political and social atmosphere of the United States in the 1960s and 1970s with which they were at odds. Author Donald W. Maxwell provides a definitive history of this exodus that is compelling, accessible, and brimming with insightful observations. Canada was an attractive destination. It was very easy for Americans to enter. U.S. residents needed no passport to enter Canada and could, from 1966 to 1972, apply to immigrate to Canada from within Canada. Canadian immigration officials refused to extradite military deserters and draft resisters if they otherwise qualified as immigrants. Émigrés who succeeded in Canada did so by identifying a specific place in which they could enjoy life on their own terms while eschewing the nation and the responsibilities it places on its citizens. Further, they embraced cosmopolitanism, detached from civic engagement and political identification, which they exercised by traveling beyond the bounds of their own country, by accepting aid from religious groups, and by pursuing higher education with fewer restrictions than in the United States. By delving into rich archival resources and firsthand oral histories, Unguarded Border reclaims the multifaceted and complex history of these U.S. émigrés who might otherwise be lost to history"--

Abstract: This chapter discusses how the Ontario school curriculum comes to grips with Canadian identity and how the concept has evolved over the years from one highly influenced by Canada’s colonial ties to a cultural identity that draws on the contributions from its diverse population from the indigenous groups to settler groups from the two “founding nations” as well as those who have emigrated from all around the globe. The effects of globalization on Canadians’ vision of themselves are also explored with relation to how school curriculum reflects Canada’s position in the world and how its citizens should position themselves.

Abstract: "An essential work on autonomy and self-governance for scholars of Indigenous politics, Indigenous rights in the Americas, constitutional law, and multicultural citizenship regimes. Across the Americas, Indigenous and Afro-descendent peoples have demanded autonomy, self-determination, and self-governance. By exerting their collective rights, they have engaged with domestic and international standards on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, implemented full-fledged mechanisms for autonomous governance, and promoted political and constitutional reform aimed at expanding understandings of multicultural citizenship and the plurinational state. Yet these achievements come in conflict with national governments’ adoption of neoliberal economic and neo-extractive policies which advance their interests over those of Indigenous communities. Available for the first time in English, Indigenous Territorial Autonomy and Self-Government in the Diverse Americas explores current and historical struggles for autonomy within ancestral territories, experiences of self-governance in operation, and presents an overview of achievements, challenges, and threats across three decades. Case studies across Bolivia, Chile, Nicaragua, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, and Canada provide a detailed discussion of autonomy and self-governance in development and in practice. Paying special attention to the role of Indigenous peoples’ organizations and activism in pursuing sociopolitical transformation, securing rights, and confronting multiple dynamics of dispossession, this book engages with current debates on Indigenous politics, relationships with national governments and economies, and the multicultural and plurinational state. This book will spark critical reflection on political experience and further exploration of the possibilities of the self-determination of peoples through territorial autonomies. Abstract: "Illuminating the First Nations struggles against the Canadian state, It's All about the Land exposes how racism underpins and shapes Indigenous-settler relationships. Renowned Kahnawà:ke Mohawk activist and scholar Taiaiake Alfred explains how the Canadian government's reconciliation agenda is a new form of colonization that is also guaranteed to fail. Bringing together Alfred's speeches and interviews from over the past two decades, the book shows that Indigenous peoples across the world face a stark choice: reconnect with their authentic cultures and values or continue following a slow road to annihilation. Alfred proposes a radical vision for contesting and confronting the ongoing genocide of the original peoples of this land: Indigenous Resurgence. This way of thinking, being, and practising represents an authentic politics that roots resistance in the spirit, knowledge, and laws of the ancestors. Set against the historic arc of Indigenous-settler relations in Canada and drawing on the rich heritage of First Nations resistance movements, It's All about the Land traces the evolution of Indigenous struggle and liberation through the dynamic processes of oratory, dialogue, action, and reflection."--

Abstract: "Systemic Islamophobia in Canada presents critical perspectives on systemic Islamophobia in Canadian politics, law, and society, and maps areas for future research and inquiry. Authors consist of both scholars and professionals who encounter in the ordinary course of their work the--sometimes banal, sometimes surprising--operation of systemic Islamophobia. Centering the lived realities of Muslims chiefly in Canada, but internationally as well, the contributors identify the limits of democratic accountability in the operation of our shared institutions of government. Intended as a guide, the volume identifies important points of consideration that have systemic implications for whether, how, and under what conditions Islamophobia is enabled and perpetuated, and in some cases even rendered respectable policy or bureaucratic practice in Canada. The essays are designed as gestures to future researchers on Islam and Muslims in Canada who may take the introduction as inspiration for their own research. Ultimately, Systemic Islamophobia in Canada identifies a range of systemically Islamophobic sites in Canada to guide tomorrow's researchers and policy makers in fulfilling the promise of an inclusive democratic Canada."--

Abstract: “This book is ambitious, and definitely fills a gap that has existed for a long time in the literature on basic income. It can be considered a seminal contribution to the field. As a result of its pioneering nature, it should become a reference on the subject.” -Thibault Laurentjoye, EHESS Paris – PSL Research University, France “This is a very valuable project that will make a critically important contribution to the literature on basic income. By moving from general principles to the question of implementation in a well-researched and empirically sound manner, this book shifts the debate toward more practical considerations at a time when there is renewed interest in the idea. The authors tackle the issue head on of how to fund a basic income.” -Laurent Dobuzinskis, Simon Fraser University, Canada This Palgrave Pivot second edition argues that basic income is, in fact, affordable. The contributors approach the topic from the perspectives of three different countries—Canada, Switzerland, and Australia—to overcome objections that a universal program to keep all citizens above the poverty line would be too expensive to implement. They assess the complex array of revenue sources that can make universal basic income feasible, from the underestimated value of public program redundancies to new and so far, unaccounted publicly owned assets. This new edition adds an analysis for financing basic income in the United States, as well as considering the basic income potential in a country of far more modest economic resources, Portugal. The COVID-19 pandemic is discussed in a new Prologue, demonstrating the need for universal economic security as a precautionary measure for unforeseen crises. New research and compelling analyses are included throughout, to provide support for a dual basic income proposal. Richard Pereira, Global Labour Research Centre, York University, Toronto, former economist with the House of Commons in Canada. .

Abstract: “Federman Rodriguez sets out to resolve an intriguing puzzle: How did two countries with so great a disparity of national power, Canada and the United States, come to adopt similar military policies in Afghanistan in 2006-2011? International Relations theory and historical precedent would have predicted otherwise. Rodriguez’s highly readable volume provides a compelling explanation of Canadian and US foreign policy and sheds light on the opportunities and limitations of power in the international system.” --Elinor Sloan, Carleton University, Canada. “Federman Rodriguez adapts the theory of neoclassical realism to explain, despite vastly different capabilities, how Canada and the United States’ foreign and security policy in Afghanistan converged on a counterinsurgency campaign. He provides a theoretically unique and empirically rich analysis of the decisions made by each country. This book is important in understanding what happened to the ill-fated intervention in Afghanistan.” --Brian C. Schmidt, Carleton University, Canada. The book aims to explain the factors that brought about a high degree of similarity between American and Canadian foreign and security policies during the Afghanistan intervention. Specifically, it seeks to explain why, despite their different positions in the international distribution of power, the United States and Canada embraced similar counterinsurgency (COIN) strategies from 2005/2006 to 2011. During this time, the United States and Canada fought against insurgent groups, sought to maintain stabilized areas by mentoring Afghan forces, and invested in infrastructure and governance. These goals, which corresponded to the ‘clear,’ ‘hold,’ and ‘build’ COIN components, entailed sending troops and civilian officials to a war zone and committing financial resources. Federman Rodriguez is Assistant Professor of the Faculty of International Relations, Political and Urban Studies at Rosario University, Bogotá, Colombia.

Abstract: Following the end of the British Empire and Great Britain's orientation toward Europe, the concepts of order which had been characterized by settler colonialism were outdated. Sebastian Koch studies the cultural coping strategies which became necessary in the former 'white' settler colonies in Canada, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand due to the threat to their British-oriented collective identity. Abstract: "Reviled by some radicals and progressives, a reassuring touchstone for most conservatives, the family has always been both an institution and an idea. Often a source of emotional sustenance and material support, families can also be sites of conflict and abuse. This book traces the changing forms and meanings of family in the territory that now comprises Canada, from the first contacts between Indigenous peoples and French explorers, traders, missionaries, and settlers in northeastern North America in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the present. It draws on the rich historiography of the family in Canada and elsewhere to provide an overview of the many, and sometimes radical, shifts in the composition and significance of family over five centuries. Of Kith and Kin explores the histories of both Indigenous and settler families in both Quebec and English Canada and draws on both French-language and English-language historiographies. Region, ethnicity, race, and social class shaped the lived experiences of families. Age and gender made a difference within families. Debates about family – who is allowed to marry and for what reasons, who shall bear children and at what moment in their life, who shall adopt and what child they might adopt, who shall inherit family property – regularly make the headlines. Understanding the variety of family forms and experiences throughout Canada’s history can help to better put the present into perspective. All history includes family histories; conversely, families provide us with a fascinating lens through which to view and understand the collective choices made by the state and by civil society."--

Abstract: "Coloniality and Racial (In)Justice in the University examines the disruption and remaking of the university at a moment in history when white supremacist politics have erupted across North America, as have anti-racist and anti-colonial movements. Situating the university at the heart of these momentous developments, this collection debunks the popular claim that the university is well on its way to overcoming its histories of racial exclusion. Written by faculty and students located at various levels within the institutional hierarchy, this book demonstrates how the shadows of of settler colonialism and racial division are reiterated in "newer" neo-liberal practices. Drawing on Critical Race and Indigenous theory, the chapters challenge Eurocentric knowledge, institutional whiteness, and structural discrimination that are the bedrock of the institution. The authors also analyse their own experiences to show how Indigenous dispossession, racial violence, administrative prejudice, and imperialist militarization shape classroom interactions within the university."--

Abstract: "When working with Indigenous Peoples, the helping professions - education, social work, health care and justice - reinforce the colonial lie that Indigenous Peoples need saving. Leading anti-racism scholars in this volume reveal the ways in which white settlers working in these institutions shape, defend, and uphold institutional racism, even while professing to support Indigenous people. White supremacy shows up in the everyday behaviours, language, and assumptions of white professionals who reproduce myths of Indigenous inferiority. White settlers have a responsibility to understand the colonial history of their professions and their complicity in ongoing violence, be it violent policing, school push-out, or denial of health care. The answer isn't cultural awareness training. What's needed is radical anti-racism, solidarity, and a relinquishing of the power of white supremacy."--

Abstract: "Dying and Death in Canada provides a comprehensive, up-to-date examination of dying, death, and bereavement from a Canadian perspective. The fourth edition covers current issues and recent developments in the field, such the implementation of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) and the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. New topics include death doulas, death tourism, psychogenic death, bonds between the living and the dead, mass death events, and cultural diversity, sensitivity, and competence. This edition combines sensitive language and current research with the aim of destigmatizing conversations surrounding suicide, while case studies offer personal accounts from doctors, nurses, parents, and children of the deceased. Exploring the significance of end-of-life experiences, Dying and Death in Canada shows that how we live influences how we die, and the society and culture in which we live have profound effects on how we behave when confronted with dying and death."--

Abstract: "In Diversity, Crime, and Justice in Canada hate-crime specialist Barbara Perry brings together 16 of the country's leading scholars to address issues of inequality as they intersect with crime and social justice. Students will discover how collective identities—not just of race, class, and gender, but of religion, ability, sexuality, age—play a crucial part in determining the nature of an individual’s encounter with the criminal justice system. Integrating themes of history and context, power and powerlessness, and social and political action throughout, the text examines the concept of difference, the specific issues that different groups face with respect to the justice system, and the kinds of reform necessary to mitigate inequalities. Thoroughly updated throughout, the third edition includes the latest statistics, references, and topics—including new content on the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter, Missing and Murder Indigenous Women and Girls, and Truth and Reconciliation."--

Abstract: "This manuscript provides international and Canadian perspectives on the possibilities for “beyond-GDP” measurement, i.e. alternative or complementary metrics that could allow a move beyond reliance on the Gross Domestic Product as the dominant indicator of economic and social performance. It examines a wide range of ways to measure wellbeing and related issues of sustainability, as well as lessons from the growing number of efforts around the world to measure wellbeing differently and bring those measurements into the policy process through complementary actions and new policy tools. Six main questions tie together the various chapters: What have been the policy and other impacts of key beyond-GDP measurement initiatives so far? What are the most promising possibilities and policy applications for beyond-GDP measurement? Which approach to wellbeing measurement should guide construction of a beyond-GDP indicator or indicator dashboard? What complementary measures and related policy tools can help ensure that new measurements are not merely calculated and published, but taken into account in policymaking? What are they key barriers to introducing beyond-GDP metrics and using them in decision-making? What are the key next steps for beyond-GDP measurement?"--

Abstract: "Power and Resistance debunks the dominant neoliberal, hyper-individualist approach to society's problems, which claims that people are poor because they are lazy, environmental crises stem from individuals' consumption habits, and Indigenous Peoples are oppressed because they refuse to assimilate. We argue that it is social inequality and oppression that are the underlying causes of "social problems." Certain groups have the power to push through agendas that benefit them but harm other groups and society as a whole. Solving these issues is not about individual action: it requires changing the very structures of our society. In this volume, we dig down to the roots of these "social problems" through case studies and contemporary examples, offering effective paths towards social justice. The seventh edition of Power and Resistance includes new chapters on anti-Black racism in schools, Indigenous Peoples and mental health, food security and sovereignty, and work in the gig economy."--

Abstract: "Tensions and conflicts related to linguistic identity and security are inevitable--even necessary--in liberal democracies. However, if conflicts related to language and identity negatively impact democratic participation, and lead to social fragmentation, civic withdrawal, and lack of trust in societal institutions, then the political system itself may become suspect and unstable. Written by experts from the fields of sociolinguistics, bilingual studies, political science/philosophy, and education, this volume provides a comprehensive picture of the current political, cultural and social factors impacting language policy in the USA and Canada. The chapters cover many aspects of social life in North America, such as immigration, bilingual education, heritage languages, and linguistic identity, and explore the challenges and set-backs, along with the many positive steps taken in recent years to advance the values of inclusion amidst diversity in a variety of contexts and domains in the United States and Canada"--

Abstract: "One of Canada's most prominent Indigenous voices uncovers the lies Canada tells itself and the power of narrative to prioritize truth over comfort. Jesse Wente remembers the exact moment he realized that he was a certain kind of Indian. Not Anishinaabe or Ojibwe, but seen as a stereotypical cartoon Indian. He was playing softball as a child when the opposing team began to war-whoop when he was at bat. It was just one of many incidents that formed Wente's understanding of what it means to be a modern Indigenous person in a society still overwhelmingly colonial in its attitudes and institutions. As the child of an American father and an Anishinaabe mother, Wente grew up in Toronto with frequent visits to the Serpent River reserve. By exploring his family's history, including his grandmother's experience in residential school, and citing his own frequent incidents of racial profiling by police who'd stop him on the streets, Wente unpacks the discrepancies between his personal identity and how non-Indigenous people view him. He also describes his discomfort at becoming a designated spokesperson for Indigenous people's concerns, even as he struggles with not feeling Ojibwe enough. In his work as a CBC Radio columnist, film critic and programmer, and as the founding director of the Indigenous Screen Office, Wente has analyzed and given voice to the differences between Hollywood portrayals of Indigenous people and lived culture. Through the lens of art, pop culture commentary, and personal stories, and with disarming humour, he links his love of baseball and movies to such issues as cultural appropriation, Indigenous representation and identity, and Indigenous narrative sovereignty. Indeed, he argues that storytelling in all its forms is one of Indigenous peoples' best weapons in the fight to reclaim their rightful place. Wente explores and exposes the lies that Canada tells itself, unravels "the two founding nations" myth, and insists that the notion of "reconciliation" is not a realistic path forward. There is not a state of peace between First Nations and the state of Canada that can be recovered through reconciliation--because no such relationship ever existed. Part memoir and part manifesto, Unreconciled is a stirring call to arms to put truth over the flawed concept of reconciliation, and to build a new, respectful relationship between the nation of Canada and Indigenous peoples."--

Abstract: "The essays in Nuances of Blackness in the Canadian Academy make visible the submerged stories of Black life in academia. They offer fresh historical, social, and cultural insights into what it means to teach, learn, research, and work while Black. In daring to shift from margin to centre, the book's contributors confront two overlapping themes. First, they resist a singular construction of Blackness that masks the nuances and multiplicity of what it means to be and experience the academy as a Black body. Second, they challenge the stubborn durability of anti-Black tropes, the dehumanization of Blackness, persistent deficit ideology, and the tyranny of low expectations that permeate the dominant idea of Blackness in the White colonial imagination. Operating at the intersections of discourse and experience, contributors reflect on how Blackness shapes academic pathways, ignites complicated and often difficult conversations, and re-imagines Black pasts, presents, and futures. This unique collection contributes to the articulation of more nuanced understandings of the ways in which Blackness is made, unmade, and remade in the academy and the implications for interrelated dynamics across and within post-secondary education, Black communities in Canada, and global Black diasporas."--

Abstract: "Indigenous methodologies have been silenced and obscured by the Western scientific means of knowledge production. In a challenge to this colonialist rejection of Indigenous knowledge, Anishinaabe researcher Kathleen Absolon describes how Indigenous researchers re-theorize and re-create methodologies. Understanding Indigenous methodologies as guided by Indigenous paradigms, worldviews, principles, processes and contexts, Absolon argues that they are wholistic, relational, inter-relational and interdependent with Indigenous philosophies, beliefs and ways of life. In exploring the ways Indigenous researchers use Indigenous methodologies within mainstream academia, Kaandossiwin renders these methods visible and helps to guard other ways of knowing from colonial repression. This second edition features the author's reflections on her decade of research and teaching experience since the last edition, celebrating the most common student questions, concerns, and revelations."--

Abstract: "Historic freedom fighter and conductor of the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman risked her life to ferry enslaved people from America to freedom in Canada. Her legacy instigates and orients this exploration of the history of Black lives and the future of collective struggle in Canada. Harriet's Legacies recuperates the significance of Tubman's time in Canada as more than just an interlude in her American narrative: it is a new point from which to think about Black diasporic mobilities, possibilities, and histories. Through essays and creative works this collection articulates new territory for Tubman in relation to the Black Atlantic archive, connecting her legacies of survival, freedom, and cultural expression within a transnational framework. Contributors take up the question of legacy in ways that remap discourses of genealogy and belonging, positioning Tubman as an important part of today's freedom struggles. Integrating scholarship with creative and curatorial practices, the volume expands conversations about culture and expression in African Canadian life across art, literature, performance, politics, and public pedagogy. Considering questions of culture, community, and futures, Harriet's Legacies explores what happened in the wake of Tubman's legacy and situates Canada as a key part of that dialogue."--

Abstract: This book is the first collection of scholarship featuring both Canadian and American scholarship on the resurgent right-wing extremist movement in the two countries. It is particularly timely given the recent rise in political populism that has engendered renewed activism from extreme right contingents. Trump’s right-wing populist and white nationalist political campaign has galvanized Canadian and American white supremacist ideologies, identities, movements and practices. Leading Canadian and American scholars are brought together to explore a contemporary array of current dynamics, patterns and characteristics associated with the movement in each country. Split into four sections, it provides an introduction to extremism in the 21st century, it examines studying extremism, forms of extremist activity and violence, and the responses. The collection allows comparisons to be drawn out from the distinct treatments of each country. It speaks to students as well as scholars in social sciences departments, including criminology, sociology, social justice, and terrorism, peace and security studies, and political-violence related programs. Barbara Perry is Professor in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities at Ontario Tech University, Canada, and the Director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism. Jeff Gruenewald is Associate Professor and Director of the Terrorism Research Center (TRC) in the Department of Sociology & Criminology at University of Arkansas, USA. Ryan Scrivens is Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University, USA. He is also Associate Director at the International CyberCrime Research Centre at Simon Fraser University, Canada, and Research Fellow at the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence.

Abstract: “Can I choose to die?” As the number of requests for euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide continues to rise, human rights law faces a new conflict: the right to die vs. the right to life… The right to die or, in other words, ‘the right to choose the time and manner of one’s own death’ is a question of personal autonomy and its limits. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the right to die and sheds light on its possible future under the European Convention on Human Rights. After setting a clear framework by defining the key terminology, the book takes a two-part approach to achieving its aim. The first part focuses on the right to die in practice by examining selected jurisdictions. Switzerland, which is famous for its assisted suicide organizations, and the Netherlands, which was the first country to legalize euthanasia, are examined in detail. Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, and -as an exception to the Convention perspective - Canada are also included. While this examination offers a better understanding of what the right to die looks like in practice, it also provides insights on the slippery slope argument, which serves as a counterweight to personal autonomy, without making a definitive statement on its validity. This part also illustrates the different paths that led or did not lead to the right to die in practice. The second part is an analysis of the European Court of Human Rights case law on the right to die. The Court has made important statements in only very cases, while its caution when approaching such a delicate and controversial topic among its 47 members is understandably emphasized. This analysis of the Court’s approach to the balancing of personal autonomy against other interests allows us to take a look back at the practice in more permissive jurisdictions through the lens of the Convention. Taken together, the book’s two parts provide valuable lessons for countries that decide to practice assisted dying, which are outlined in the conclusion. In addition, given that a purely legal approach can only offer a partial picture, the book argues that an interdisciplinary approach would be much more favorable in terms of providing the necessary basis for the right to die debate.

Abstract: This book acts as a tribute to the legacy of the Canadian political economist Kari Polanyi Levitt, daughter of Karl Polanyi, one of the great economists of the 20th century. Polanyi Levitt’s life and work were devoted to understanding the scientific and political challenges that humanity faces and the incredible impacts of development, trade, and globalization in their diverse manifestations, including in the context of the current COVID-19 pandemic. This book reflects on Polanyi Levitt’s conviction that the solution to contemporary challenges lies not in the development of sophisticated technologies, but in questioning how we want to live with each other and working to re-embed the economy in the wider social system. Ultimately, the book contends that Polanyi Levitt’s message is simple: humanity must rethink the way we live in this world our place in the universe, and our relationship with nature. Drawing on a 10-year research project encompassing interviews and literature review, this short volume introduces and celebrates Kari Polanyi Levitt's legacy and invites political economists to engage with her work. Abstract: When U.S. war resisters turned to Canada as refuge during the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan/Iraq Wars, they not only hoped to forestall deployment to a combat zone but also to build new lives and make a new home abroad. In her empirical study, Sarah J. Grünendahl explores and juxtaposes how well the two war resister 'generations' have been able to establish themselves after all and to what extent they partake in Canadian society. The comparison is instructive for migration and refugee studies altogether: The war resisters in the sample, unlike many other migrant populations, did not have to contend with language and cultural barriers in their destination country, given similarities between the United States and Canada. Sarah J. Grünendahl's research thus allows for an analysis of the effects of residency on migrants' adaptation and participation in the receiving society, isolated from these two common barriers. Further, the study sheds light on how refugees and non-citizens can employ civic engagement to claim a place for themselves and overcome societal exclusion. About the author Sarah J. Grünendahl is research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Cultural Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf and earned her doctorate in Political Science at the University of Siegen. Her research interests include migration and refugee studies, the effects of legal status on migrants' incorporation, and the nexus between societal participation, place (attachment) and identity.

Abstract: "Now in its fourth edition, Family Matters offers an enriched discussion on a variety of substantive issues experienced by diverse Canadians across the life course. Adopting a feminist sociological approach throughout, this popular textbook explores family dynamics through a critical life course theoretical lens. This over-arching perspective is used to examine how social, economic, and historical processes related to gender roles, age and generational location, ethnicity and race, geographical location, and social change shape contemporary family life. This fourth edition includes updated statistics and census data. It provides more detailed and nuanced discussions of many areas, including more emphasis on life course theory. Other topics include the history of slavery and Black family life in Canada, Indigenous families, foreign/temporary workers, intersectional and racialized processes influencing family life courses, youth activism, transgendered children, technology and social media influences on family relationships, and the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on aging families."--

Abstract: "The sixteenth-century European wars of religion set the stage for mass migration to the New World. Of course, there was nothing new about the New World to Indigenous peoples who had lived there for millennia. Insatiable Hunger compares European historical accounts and Indigenous stories of contact to illustrate the wide cultural chasm that separated the two civilizations. Joseph Graham tells a story of religiously obsessed Europeans pouring onto the continent and consuming everything in their path and the attempts Indigenous peoples made to reason with the hungry newcomers. Tracing events from Jacques Cartier's first visits in the sixteenth century to the War of 1812, Insatiable Hunger attempts to understand the root causes of the mutual incomprehension baked into these two civilizations' worldviews. As descendants of European settlers in Canada and the United States confront the legacy of colonialism and genocide of Indigenous peoples, Insatiable Hunger will be an important primer on the worldviews at the root of this violent political project."-- Provided by publisher.
