    Abstract: "What is Colonialism? develops a clear and rigorous account of what colonialism is and how it works. It draws on and synthesizes recent work in cognitive science, affective science, and social psychology, along with Marxism and related forms of analysis. Hogan begins with some fundamental conceptual distinctions, such as the degree to which a group shares beliefs, dispositions, and skills versus the degree to which they share identification with a category. Building on these distinctions, he defines colonialism in terms of political, economic, and cultural autonomy, clarifying the nature of culture and autonomy particularly. He goes on to articulate an invaluable systematic account of the varieties of colonialism. The final chapters outline the motives of imperialists, differentiating these from their ideological rationalizations, and sketching the harms caused by colonialism. The book concludes by considering when, or if, one can achieve a genuinely postcolonial condition. Hogan illustrates these analyses by examining influential literary works-by European writers (such as Joseph Conrad and Athol Fugard) and by non-Europeans (such as Kamala Markandaya and Wole Soyinka).     Abstract: Kautschuk war das wichtigste Exportprodukt Kameruns, denn um 1900 steckte Kautschuk bzw. Gummi weltweit in Dichtungen, Reifen, Kabeln und zahlreichen Gegenständen des Alltags. Die starke Nachfrage nach diesem Rohstoff löste zwischen 1890 und 1913 einen globalen Kautschukboom aus, der auch die deutsche Kolonie Kamerun prägte. Dieses Buch ist die erste Studie, die die tatsächlichen Arbeitsbeziehungen in einer afrikanischen Kautschukökonomie analysiert. Das koloniale Geschäft mit Kautschuk war keineswegs nur auf Zwang und Gewalt gebaut. Vielmehr nutzten Afrikanerinnen und Afrikaner die Nachfrage nach Kautschuk und Arbeitskräften für ihre eigene soziale Mobilität. Europäische Unternehmen konnten auf eine Vielzahl von ganz unterschiedlicher Arbeitsformen zurückgreifen, welche die Afrikaner und Afrikanerinnen selbst auch für ihre eigenen Interessen nutzten. Was entstand, war eine koloniale Arbeiterschaft, die die europäischen Arbeitgeber wie auch die afrikanischen Gesellschaften herausforderte

In 1800, Chimborazo in South America was believed to be the world's highest mountain, only succeeded by Mount Everest in 1856. Science on the Roof of the World tells the story of this shift, and the scientific, imaginative, and political remaking needed to fit the Himalaya into a new global scientific and environmental order. Lachlan Fleetwood traces untold stories of scientific measurement and collecting, indigenous labour and expertise, and frontier-making to provide the first comprehensive account of the East India Company's imperial entanglements with the Himalaya. To make the Himalaya knowable and globally comparable, he demonstrates that it was necessary to erase both dependence on indigenous networks and scientific uncertainties, offering an innovative way of understanding science's global history, and showing how geographical features like mountains can serve as scales for new histories of empire

    Abstract: Ethnographic museums, now often rebranded as collections of ‘world cultures’, appear permanently problematic, even as their contexts and the orientation of their activities change. Across Europe and elsewhere, curators and other museum staff are committed to dialogue and collaboration with the peoples from whom collections were made. But their vast assemblages of artefacts, removed from countries of origin primarily during the colonial period, and assumed, mostly inaccurately, to have been looted, seem always in question. Photo-Museology arises from an art project undertaken over 25 years. From the early 1990s, Mark Adams and Nicholas Thomas together investigated sites of cross-cultural encounter in the Pacific and associated places in Europe, ranging from Captain Cook memorials to ethnographic museums. Some of those museums still exhibited colonial symbols and forms of knowledge, others had attempted to displace such histories, foregrounding more inclusive or progressive stories. Complementing the academic studies in the Pacific Presences series, this book offers what John Berger referred to as ‘another way of telling’. Through photography, it revisits the places collections were made, and the places they ended up in. It is a meditation on presence and absence.

    Abstract: In The Politics of Decolonial Investigations Walter D. Mignolo provides a sweeping examination of how coloniality has operated around the world in its myriad forms from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first. Decolonial border thinking allows Mignolo to outline how the combination of the self-fashioned narratives of Western civilization and the hegemony of Eurocentric thought served to eradicate all knowledges in non-European languages and praxes of living and being. Mignolo also traces the geopolitical origins of racialized and gendered classifications, modernity, globalization, and cosmopolitanism, placing them all within the framework of coloniality. Drawing on the work of theorists and decolonial practitioners from the Global South and the Global East, Mignolo shows how coloniality has provoked the emergence of decolonial politics initiated by delinking from all forms of Western knowledge and subjectivities. The urgent task, Mignolo stresses, is the epistemic reconstitution of categories of thought and praxes of living destituted in the very process of building Western civilization and the idea of modernity. The overcoming of the long-lasting hegemony of the West and its distorted legacies is already underway in all areas of human existence. Mignolo underscores the relevance of the politics of decolonial investigations, in and outside the academy, to liberate ourselves from canonized knowledge, ways of knowing, and praxes of living

    Abstract: Das Buch schreibt die Entstehungsgeschichte des Kulturgüterschutzes im Völkerrecht aus einer postkolonialen Perspektive neu. Im Gegensatz zur bisherigen Historiographie von „Kultur“ im Völkerrecht argumentiert die vorliegende Studie, dass der eurozentrische „Kulturstandard“ des 19. und 20. Jahrhundert maßgeblich in Wechselwirkung mit der Entwicklung des Kulturgüterschutzes stand. Verschiedene Akteure nutzten das Recht auf unterschiedliche Weise, um an dem „Zivilisationsdiskurs“ teilzuhaben. Das Ziel des Buchs ist es, ein neues Narrativ in die Geschichte des Kulturgüterschutzes einzuführen. Das dominante Fortschrittsnarrativ soll durch eine kritische Genealogie des Völkerrechts ersetzt werden, welche die hegemonialen Strukturen der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart aufdeckt. Sebastian M. Spitra ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Rechts- und Verfassungsgeschichte der Universität Wien und Grotius Fellow der University of Michigan Law School.
    Abstract: This book analyses the development of the norms of protecting cultural heritage from a postcolonial perspective. In contrast to the traditional historiography of ‘culture’ in international law, it reveals how the highly problematic and Eurocentric ‘standard of civilisation’ in the 19th and 20th centuries served as a driving force for the formation of cultural heritage protection norms. Various actors used the law in different ways to take part in this discourse on ‘civilisation’. The aim of this book is to lay down a new narrative on the history of the protection of world cultural heritage. It endeavours to replace the inherent politics of the dominant narrative on progress with a critical genealogy which reveals the long-lasting hegemonic structures of today’s international law. Sebastian M. Spitra is a research fellow at the Department of Legal and Constitutional History at the University of Vienna and a Grotius fellow at the University of Michigan Law School.

    Abstract: How colonial categories of race and religion together created identities and hierarchies that today are vehicles for multicultural nationalism and social critique in the Caribbean and its diasporas. When the British Empire abolished slavery, Caribbean sugar plantation owners faced a labor shortage. To solve the problem, they imported indentured "coolie" laborers, Hindus and a minority Muslim population from the Indian subcontinent. Indentureship continued from 1838 until its official end in 1917. The Deepest Dye begins on post-emancipation plantations in the West Indies-where Europeans, Indians, and Africans intermingled for work and worship-and ranges to present-day England, North America, and Trinidad, where colonial-era legacies endure in identities and hierarchies that still shape the post-independence Caribbean and its contemporary diasporas. Aisha Khan focuses on the contested religious practices of obeah and Hosay, which are racialized as "African" and "Indian" despite the diversity of their participants. Obeah, a catch-all Caribbean term for sub-Saharan healing and divination traditions, was associated in colonial society with magic, slave insurrection, and fraud. This led to anti-obeah laws, some of which still remain in place. Hosay developed in the West Indies from Indian commemorations of the Islamic mourning ritual of Muharram. Although it received certain legal protections, Hosay's mass gatherings, processions, and mock battles provoked fears of economic disruption and labor unrest that lead to criminalization by colonial powers. The proper observance of Hosay was debated among some historical Muslim communities and continues to be debated now. In a nuanced study of these two practices, Aisha Khan sheds light on power dynamics through religious and racial identities formed in the context of colonialism in the Atlantic world, and shows how today these identities reiterate inequalities as well as reinforce demands for justice and recognition

    Abstract: This is an important, revisionist account of the origins of the British Empire in Asia in the early modern period. David Veevers uncovers a hidden world of transcultural interactions between servants of the English East India Company and the Asian communities and states they came into contact with, revealing how it was this integration of Europeans into non-European economies, states and societies which was central to British imperial and commercial success rather than national or mercantilist enterprise. As their servants skilfully adapted to this rich and complex environment, the East India Company became enfranchised by the eighteenth century with a breadth of privileges and rights - from governing sprawling metropolises to trading customs-free. In emphasising the Asian genesis of the British Empire, this book sheds new light on the foreign frameworks of power which fuelled the expansion of Global Britain in the early modern world.

    Abstract: Klappentext: Gewalt ist nicht nur Ereignis, sondern auch Prozess und Verhältnis. Sie zerstört nicht nur Ordnung, sondern begründet sie und hält sie aufrecht. Der Dimension des Wissens wird dabei in konventioneller Forschung wenig Bedeutung beigemessen, gilt sie doch als Gegenteil von oder als Gegenmittel zu Gewalt. Mit dem Begriff der »epistemischen Gewalt« rückt Claudia Brunner den konstitutiven Zusammenhang von Wissen, Herrschaft und Gewalt in der kolonialen Moderne, unserer Gegenwart, in den Fokus. Ausgehend von feministischer, post- und dekolonialer Theorie konturiert sie in Auseinandersetzung mit den Konzepten struktureller, kultureller, symbolischer und normativer Gewalt ein transdisziplinäres Konzept epistemischer Gewalt.

    Abstract: Vorstellungen von Freundschaft und Kollaboration dominieren bis heute den Diskurs über die Beziehung zwischen nationalsozialistischem Deutschland und der arabischen Welt. Ein Geschichtsbild, das durch die Fokussierung auf den Jerusalemer Mufti Amin al-Husseini und seine Beziehung zu Hitler-Deutschland geprägt wurde. Doch wie sahen direkte Begegnungen von Arabern mit dem Nationalsozialismus aus? Wie wurden Araber in der nationalsozialistischen Rassenideologie verortet? Die vorliegende Arbeit fragt nach der Repräsentation von Arabern in der nationalsozialistischen Propaganda sowie dem Wandel des „Araberbildes“ vor dem Hintergrund kriegsstrategischer Interessen. Am Beispiel der nordafrikanischen Kolonialtruppen, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Soldaten wie auch als Kriegsgefangene auf den europäischen Kriegsschauplätzen präsent waren, rückt Sophie Wagenhofer den Widerspruch zwischen interessenpolitischer Werbung und rassenideologischer Ablehnung in den Mittelpunkt. Die Autorin untersucht unterschiedliche Medien der NS-Propaganda, wie Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenartikel, Bildmaterial, Flugblätter, Plakate sowie Radio- und Filmbeiträge, deren Gegenstand, aber auch deren Adressaten Araber und die arabische Welt waren. Ergänzt wird dieses Bild durch teils geheime Akten aus dem Archiv des Auswärtigen Amtes sowie dem Bundesarchiv, die die propagandistischen Zielsetzungen des NS-Regimes beleuchten. So wird die Ambivalenz deutlich, die die Beziehung zwischen nationalsozialistischem Deutschland und Arabern prägte, und somit das Bild einer oft unterstellten Affinität zwischen arabischer Welt und dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschland hinterfragt.

    Abstract: Reiseberichte, besonders über Indien, sind durchzogen von sich wiederholenden Argumentationsmustern und -strukturen. Sie bilden damit ein prädestiniertes Untersuchungskorpus für die Topik. Anhand von rund 40 Indienreiseberichten, die sich als Kreuzungspunkt diverser um 1900 virulenter Diskurse darstellen und bisher kaum erforscht sind, rekonstruiert und analysiert Maria Hinzmann etwa 150 Topoi. Aus der Perspektive einer kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Literaturwissenschaft und mit Anleihen aus der Korpuslinguistik liefert sie eine bahnbrechende Neugrundlegung der Topik, deren transdisziplinäres Potential bis in die Digital Humanities reicht
