In the shifting and relational margins of such peripheral societies, power and agency are constantly negotiated and in flux. Notions of masculinity are redefined in an interlaced environment of militarization, hyper-masculinization, and gendered violence. These interconnections inform victimhood and agency among the most vulnerable marginalized constituencies - namely, women and migrants. By centering the marginalized in its inquiry, the book analyzes obstacles to achieving positive, organic peace based on cooperation and mutual healing.     Abstract: "Once touted as the world's largest industry and also a tool for fostering peace and global understanding, tourism has certainly been a major force shaping our world. The recent COVID-19 crisis has led to calls to transform tourism and reset it along more ethical and sustainable lines. It was in this context that calls to "socialise tourism" emerged (Higgins-Desbiolles, 2020). This edited volume builds on this work by employing the term Socialising Tourism as a broad conceptual focal point and guiding term for industry, activists and academics to rethink tourism for social and ecological justice. Socialising Tourism means reorienting travel and tourism based on the rights, interests, and safeguarding of traditional ecological and cultural knowledges of local peoples, communities and living landscapes. This means making tourism work for the public good and taking seriously the idea of putting the social and ecological before profit and growth as the world re-emerges from the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an essential first step for tourism to be made accountable to limits of the planet. Concepts discussed include Indigenous culture, toxic tourism, a 'theory of care', dismantling whiteness, decolonial tourism, and animal oppression, among others, all in the context of a post COVID-19 world.     Abstract: "The dominant economic explanations of the twentieth century are not comprehensive enough to describe the complexity of economy and society, and their reliance on the biosphere. Intangible Flow Theory in Economics: Human Participation in Economic and Societal Production outlines a new theory which challenges both economics and the relativism conveyed in social constructivism, poststructuralism and postmodernism. To mainstream economics and Marxism, monetary flows transform us humans into commodities. To this new theory, flows of economic elements as physical goods or money are consummated by intangible flows that cannot yet be precisely appraised at an actual or approximate value, for instance workflows, service flows, information flows or communicational flows. The theory suggests a systematic alternative to refute the human commodity framework and interrelated conjectures (e.g. human capital, human resources, human assets). Furthermore, it exhibits that economic and societal production is fully integrated on the biosphere. Conversely, contemporary relativism argues for end of theory development, suspension of evidence and entrenchment of knowledge validity among local systems (named as paradigms, epistemes, research programs, truth regimes, or other terms). Thus, relativism tacitly supports dominant theories as the human commodity framework because it preventively sabotages the creation of new theoretical explanations. Disputing relativist theses, intangible flow theory demonstrates that innovative theoretical explanations remain possible. This book is of significant interest to students and scholars of political economy, economic sociology, organization, economics, and social theory. Part one explores Trump's behaviour to the moment of impeachment and the longer-term residual impacts this will have once his presidency is over. It shows that our value judgements tend to be based on perception and a priori assumptions. Part two explores what, no matter our leadership role, we can learn from the Trump event. Disruption is endemic in today's world. Today it often seems we are born, live in, and die in three quite different worlds. Yet, at its core, things have changed very little. Oligarchy has been a reality since time immemorial. Unless we are first "unfrozen" from the status quo, change tends to be more cosmetic than real. These transnational phenomena form part of general political struggles that legitimate social relationships in and beyond the nation state. Part 1 on "Methodological Foundations" discusses the consequences of Bourdieu's epistemology and methodology for theorizing and investigating transnational phenomena. The contributions show the import of field-theoretical concepts for post-national insights.     Abstract: "Japan has experienced a radical shift in its self-perception. Before and during World War II, Japan's Bushido militarism led to its great colonial ventures in Asia and beyond. After the humiliating defeat and inscription of a peaceful constitution by the United States however, Japan embraced a peaceful and antimilitarist identity, which was based in its war-prohibiting Constitution and the foreign policy of the Yoshida doctrine. For most of the twentieth century, this 'merchant' identity was unusually stable. Japan refrained from any power policies outside of its borders, including United Nations peacekeeping missions, and focused on economic recovery and foreign trade. In the last three decades, however, Japan's self-perception along with its foreign policy seems to have changed. Gradually, Tokyo has conducted a number of foreign policy measures as well as internal symbolic gestures that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago and that symbolize a new and more confident Japan. Japanese politicians - including the Prime Minister Abe Shinzō - have adopted a new discourse depicting pacifism as a hindrance, rather than asset, to Japan's foreign policy. Japan is at a crossroads. But while political elites and a portion of the Japanese public call for re-articulation of Japan's peaceful national identity, there are still those who cherish the long-held idea of pacifism. Rafts of policies and programmes have come to underpin the relationship between continental governments and the donor communities of the West and particularly their institutions of global governance - the International Financial Institutions. Over time, these policies and programmes have sought to transform the authority and capacity of the state to effect social, political and economic change, while opening up the domestic space for transnational capital and ideas. The outcome is a continent now more open to international capital, export-oriented and liberal in its political governance. Has neoliberalism finally arrested under development in Africa? Bringing together leading researchers and analysts to examine key questions from a multidisciplinary perspective, this book involves a fundamental departure from orthodox analysis which often predicates colonialism as the referent object. Here, three decades of neoliberalism with its complex social and economic philosophy are given primacy. With the changed focus, an elucidation of the relationship between global development and local changes are examined through a myriad of pressing contemporary issues to offer a critical multi-disciplinary appraisal of challenge and change in Africa over the past three decades."--Publisher's summary

    Abstract: Contested Sites in Jerusalem is the third and final volume in a series of books which collectively present in detail the work of the Jerusalem Old City Initiative, or JOCI, a major Canadian-led Track Two diplomatic effort, undertaken between 2003 and 2014. The aim of the Initiative was to find sustainable governance solutions for the Old City of Jerusalem, arguably the most sensitive and intractable of the final status issues dividing Palestinians and Israelis. This book examines the complex and often contentious issues that arise from the overlapping claims to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif, the role of UNESCO, and the major implications of the JOCI Special Regime for such issues as archaeology, property, and the economy. Part One is dedicated to holy sites - ground zero of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a point reinforced by the Fall 2014 disturbances which threatened to spiral out of control and engulf Palestinians and Israelis into yet another wave of violence. Part Two of the volume contains studies on archaeology, property, and economics that were written after the completion of the Special Regime model, specifically to address in depth how a Special Regime would deal with each of these three important areas. Contested Sites in Jerusalem offers an insightful explanation of the enormous challenges facing any attempt to find sustainable governance and security arrangements for the Old City in the context of a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians
