In diesem Kontext schillert der politische Seitenwechsel in vielen Farben: Bekehrung und Denunziation, enttäuschte Verweigerung, Spaltung und Spionage. Die Medientheorien des 20. Jahrhunderts bildeten sich zwischen sozialen Modellen und ihren politischen Anwendungen. Der Seitenwechsel stand im Zentrum der Theoriebildung: in der teilnehmenden Beobachtung von Propaganda und Massenmedien, Kriegstechnik und Pazifismus, Werbung und Konsumkritik. Was wird aus diesem politischen Kern der Medien und der Medientheorie nach dem Kalten Krieg und im 21. Jahrhundert? Ist die Rede vom Verrat noch eine tragende politische Größe, etwa in der Enttäuschung über staatliche und wirtschaftliche Versprechen? Und welche Rolle spielen mediale Feindbilder heute in den Widersprüchen der Weltgesellschaft etwa wenn man George Bush und Osama Bin Ladin aus nigerianischer Perspektive verfolgt? Die Herausgeber: Cornelia Epping-Jäger ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungskolleg der Universität zu Köln. Ihre Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind Mediengeschichte und Medientheorie. Torsten Hahn ist Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Institut für deutsche Sprache und Literatur der Universität zu Köln.     Abstract: In January 1987, the Indian state-run television began broadcasting a Hindu epic in serial form, The Ramayana, to nationwide audiences, violating a decades-old taboo on religious partisanship. What resulted was the largest political campaign in post-independence times, around the symbol of Lord Ram, led by Hindu nationalists. The complexion of Indian politics was irrevocably changed thereafter. In this book, Arvind Rajagopal analyses this extraordinary series of events. While audiences may have thought they were harking back to an epic golden age, Hindu nationalist leaders were embracing the prospects of neoliberalism and globalisation. Television was the device that hinged these movements together, symbolising the new possibilities of politics, at once more inclusive and authoritarian. Simultaneously, this study examines how the larger historical context was woven into and changed the character of Hindu nationalism.

Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Damit bereichert der Band die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Migration um notwendige innovative Positionen

    Abstract: Die Familienpolitik ist ein spätes Kind des deutschen Sozialstaats. Sie etablierte sich vor dem Hintergrund tief greifender gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche. Der kriegsbedingte Männermangel und der "Scheidungsboom" wurden nach 1945 als Zeichen der Auflösung traditioneller Familienformen gedeutet; später verwiesen Schlagworte wie "Pillenknick" und "sexuelle Revolution" auf einen weit reichenden Wertewandel in Familienfragen. Wie die Familienpolitik auf solche Herausforderungen reagierte, zeigt die Studie im Blick auf drei zentrale Konfliktfelder: den finanziellen Familienlastenausgleich, die Sexualaufklärung und Familienberatung sowie die Vorschulerziehung in Kindergärten. Während der Familienlastenausgleich auf Bundesebene zwischen 1965 und 1975 stagnierte, ist in den beiden anderen Bereichen ein Aufbruch zu beobachten, der in erster Linie von den Bundesländern getragen wurde. Dies wird am Beispiel Bayerns dargestellt. So kombiniert die Studie zwei große Themenkreise: Sie zeigt, wie die Familienpolitik zu einem eigenständigen Politikfeld mit vielfältigen Querschnittsaufgaben wurde, und sie lenkt das Augenmerk auf den Föderalismus als eine charakteristische Funktionsbedingung des deutschen Sozialstaates.

    Abstract: Identity in the Age of the New Economy is a multi-faceted view of contemporary employment and identity that questions a number of the myths related to the so-called new economy, knowledge society or network society. It argues that one of the most striking things about much contemporary theorizing on work and identity is the epochalist terms in which it is framed: changing forms of identity and subjectivity are assumed to be consequences of a shift to an entirely new economic, social and cultural era, signalled by concepts such as postmodernity, risk society, network society or new economy.

    Abstract: Konflikte scheinen heute gleichbedeutend mit Gewalt und Krieg. Doch Konflikte sind vielschichtig: Sie können sowohl zur Integration von Gesellschaften beitragen als auch diese zerbrechen. Die Anthropologie der Konflikte, zu der Georg Elwert weiterführende Thesen beigetragen hat, beleuchtet unterschiedliche Konfliktdynamiken und geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen integrative, eskalative oder segregative Institutionen der Konfliktaustragung entstehen - oder wieder zerfallen. Der Band geht davon aus, dass Konfliktformen und soziale Organisation in einem wechselseitigen Zusammenhang stehen. Daher hat die Anthropologie der Konflikte deren verschiedene Formen, ihre kulturelle Codierung wie auch ihre konstitutive Rolle für sozialen Wandel zu untersuchen.

    Abstract: Arnd Uhle untersucht das Verhältnis von freiheitlichem Verfassungsstaat und kultureller Identität, das bislang kaum – wenn, dann lediglich partiell – erforscht wurde. Der Autor beleuchtet die Relevanz der kulturellen Identität für Entstehung, Gestalt und Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates aus verfassungstheoretischer, aus verfassungsrechtlicher und schließlich aus europarechtlicher Perspektive.Bereits aus verfassungstheoretischer Sicht ergibt sich dabei, daß die kulturelle Identität gleichermaßen Entstehungs- wie auch Geltungsbedingung freiheitlicher Verfassungsstaatlichkeit ist, weil der freiheitliche Staat in vielfältiger Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft. Eine Betrachtung aus verfassungsrechtlicher Perspektive unterstreicht diesen Befund und belegt, daß namentlich das deutsche Grundgesetz in einer prima facie zwar komplex und unüberschaubar erscheinenden, letztlich aber systematisch geordneten und differenzierenden Weise an die kulturelle Identität anknüpft – und diese angesichts ihrer Bedeutung für den dauerhaften Fortbestand des freiheitlichen Verfassungsstaates überdies durch das in der Habilitationsschrift erstmals entfaltete grundgesetzliche Staatsziel der Vitalität und Dauerhaftigkeit der freiheitlichen Verfassungsordnung mit verfassungsrechtlichem Schutz umhegt. In der Konsequenz dieses Staatsziels ist der grundgesetzgebundene Staat zur Pflege und zum Schutz der kulturellen Identität verpflichtet. Eine abschließende europarechtliche Betrachtung verdeutlicht, daß die grundgesetzliche Anknüpfung an die kulturelle Identität wie auch deren verfassungsrechtliche Sicherung den Schutz des Art. 6 Abs.3 EUV genießen, der die Achtung der nationalen Identität anordnet.

    Abstract: The book presents a unique combination of the study of contemporary and historical practices between Asia and Europe and brings forth some of the latest thinking on the subject.     Abstract: This book contains a range of original studies on one of the major challenges in Africa today: the controversial role of youth in politics, conflict and rebellious movements. The issue is not only the drafting of child soldiers into insurgent armies or predatory militias, as in Somalia, Sierra Leone or Congo, but, more generally, that of the problematic insertion of large numbers of young people in the socio-economic and political order of post-colonial Africa. Even educated youths are being confronted with a lack of opportunities, blocked social mobility, and despair about the future. African youth, while forming a numerical majority, largely feel excluded from power, are socio-economically marginalized, thwarted in their ambitions, and have little access to representative positions or political power.

    Abstract: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina

Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development, the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist, and Liberal models; to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems; and to explore the force of change that are currently transforming them. It provides a key theoretical statement about the relation between media and political systems, a key statement about the methodology of comparative analysis in political communication, and a clear overview of the variety of media institutions that have developed in the West, understood within their political and historical context."--Jacket

    Abstract: Are there any commonalities between such phenomena as soccer hooliganism, sabotage by peasants of landlords' property, incidents of road rage, and even the events of September 11? With striking historical scope and command of the literature of many disciplines, this book, first published in 2003, seeks the common causes of these events in collective violence. In collective violence, social interaction immediately inflicts physical damage, involves at least two perpetrators of damage, and results in part from coordination among the persons who perform the damaging acts. Professor Tilly argues that collective violence is complicated, changeable, and unpredictable in some regards, yet that it also results from similar causes variously combined in different times and places. Pinpointing the causes, combinations, and settings helps to explain collective violence and its variations, and also helps to identify the best ways to mitigate violence and create democracies with a minimum of damage to persons and property

    Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship

    Abstract: Overcoming Intolerance in South Africa investigates the degree to which the political culture of South Africa - the beliefs, values, and attitudes toward politics held by ordinary people - impedes or promotes the consolidation of democratic reform. One set of values is of particular concern in this study - political tolerance. The authors contend that political tolerance is a crucial element of democratic political cultures in general, but that in the South African case, tolerance is perhaps more important than any other democratic value. Since South Africa is one of the most polyglot countries in the world, the only viable strategy for survival is tolerance toward the political views of others. The overwhelming emphasis throughout this book is on finding ways to enhance the willingness of South Africans to 'put up with' their political enemies, to allow open and widespread political competition, and to coexist in their diversity

    Abstract: Abortion, divorce, and the family: how did the state make policy decisions in these areas in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile during the last third of the twentieth century? As the three countries transitioned from democratic to authoritarian forms of government (and back), they confronted challenges posed by the rise of the feminist movement, social changes, and the power of the Catholic Church. The results were often surprising: women's rights were expanded under military dictatorships, divorce was legalized in authoritarian Brazil but not in democratic Chile, and no Latin American country changed its laws on abortion. Sex and the State explores these patterns of gender-related policy reform and shows how they mattered for the peoples of Latin America and for a broader understanding of the logic behind the state's role in shaping private lives and gender relations everywhere

    Abstract: Since so few people appear knowledgeable about public affairs, one might question whether collective policy preferences revealed in opinion surveys accurately convey the distribution of voices and interests in a society. This study, the first comprehensive treatment of the relationship between knowledge, representation, and political equality in opinion surveys, suggests some surprising answers. Knowledge does matter, and the way it is distributed in society can cause collective preferences to reflect disproportionately the opinions of some groups more than others. Sometimes collective preferences seem to represent something like the will of the people, but frequently they do not. Sometimes they rigidly enforce political equality in the expression of political viewpoints, but often they do not. The primary culprit is not any inherent shortcoming in the methods of survey research. Rather, it is the limited degree of knowledge held by ordinary citizens about public affairs. Accounting for these factors can help better appreciate thepossibilities for using opinion polls to represent the people's voice

    Abstract: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

    Abstract: Civil war conflict is a core development issue. The existence of civil war can dramatically slow a country's development process, especially in low-income countries which are more vulnerable to civil war conflict. Conversely, development can impede civil war. When development succeeds, countries become safer-when development fails, they experience a greater risk of being caught in a conflict trap. Ultimately, civil war is a failure of development.'Breaking the Conflict Trap' identifies the dire consequences that civil war has on the development process and offers three main findings. First, civil war has adverse ripple effects that are often not taken into account by those who determine whether wars start or end. Second, some countries are more likely than others to experience civil war conflict and thus, the risks of civil war differ considerably according to a country's characteristics including its economic stability. Finally, Breaking the Conflict Trap explores viable international measures that can be taken to reduce the global incidence of civil war and proposes a practical agenda for action.This book should serve as a wake up call to anyone in the international community who still thinks that development and conflict are distinct issues.

    Abstract: Why is English national identity so enigmatic and so elusive? Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day. He argues that the long history of the English as an imperial people has, as with other imperial people like the Russians and the Austrians, developed a sense of missionary nationalism which in the interests of unity and empire has necessitated the repression of ordinary expressions of nationalism. Professor Kumar's lively and provocative approach challenges readers to reconsider their pre-conceptions about national identity and who the English really are.

    Abstract: Die Medien repräsentieren den älteren türkischen Migranten oft als traditionalistischen "Islam-Macho", der die Integration seiner Frau und seiner Töchter in die Gastgesellschaft bremst oder aktiv behindert. Diese weit verbreitete Stereotype beruht überwiegend auf "Bildern aus zweiter Hand". Im Unterschied dazu rückt die Publikation von Margret Spohn die türkischen Männer der ersten Migrantengeneration explizit in den Mittelpunkt der Analysen, wo sie als "Experten ihrer eigenen Geschichte" ausführlich selbst zu Wort kommen. Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in "zwei Heimaten". Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen

    Abstract: Begegnungen mit dem Fremden sind uns vertraut, auch wenn wir den Anderen dabei häufig als unvertraut wahrnehmen. Doch es sind weniger die fremden, als vielmehr die eigenen Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen und Umgangspraktiken, die den »Einen« zum »Anderen« machen. Die Autorin analysiert diese Praktiken der Fremdsetzung, die sich von der alltäglichen Etikettierung und Stigmatisierung bis hin zu wissenschaftlichen Praktiken des »Othering« erstrecken: Rekonstruiert werden sowohl Simmels »Händler«, Parks »Mulatte«, Schütz' »Emigrant«, Meads »signifikanter/verallgemeinerter Andere« als auch ethnografische Praktiken der »Ver-Anderung« des Fremden. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder von den vertrauten Bildern des Fremden hin zu ihren subtilen Herstellungsprozessen und Resonanzen gelenkt, was es möglich macht, von den Konstruktionen des Fremden auf die Konstruktionen des Eigenen zurückzuschließen.
