Abstract: Stephen Glynn has produced a terrific book on British TV sitcom spinoff films. He writes clearly and concisely and with a demonstrable passion for the subject. He pulls off the difficult trick of bringing an impressive breadth of knowledge to this material while also communicating it in helpful and often amusing ways. -Paul Newland, University of Worcester This book constitutes the first full volume dedicated to an academic analysis of theatrically-released spinoff films derived from British radio and television sitcoms. Regularly maligned as the nadir of British film production and marginalised as a last resort for the financially-bereft industry during the 1970s, this study demonstrates that the sitcom spinoff film has instead been a persistent and important presence in British cinema from the 1940s to the present day, and includes works with distinct artistic merit. Alongside an investigation of the economic imperative underpinning these productions, i.e. the exploitation of a proven product with a ready-made audience, it is argued that, with a longevity stretching from Arthur Askey and his wartime Band Waggon (1940) to the crew of Kurupt FM and their recent People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021), the British sitcom spinoff can be interpreted as following a full generic ‘life cycle’. Starting with the ‘formative’ stage where works from Hi Gang! (1941) to I Only Arsked! (1958) establish the genre’s characteristics, the spinoff genre moves to its ‘classic’ stage where, secure for form and content, it enjoys considerable popular success with films like Till Death Us Do Part (1969), On the Buses (1971), The Likely Lads (1976) and Rising Damp (1980); the genre’s revival since the late-1990s reveals a more ‘parodic’ final stage, with films like The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse (2005) adopting a consciously self-reflective mode. It is also posited that the sitcom spinoff film is a viable source for social history, with the often-stereotypical re-presentations of characters and events an ideological metonym for the concerns of wider British society, notably in issues of class, race, gender and sexuality. He has published widely on British cinema and genre and previous volumes for Palgrave include The British Pop Music Film (2013), The British School Film (2016) and The British Football Film (2018).

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of municipal amalgamation reforms in Europe. Adopting the analytical and methodological tools of comparative historical analysis, it examines how the history of local government systems has conditioned the adoption of municipal amalgamation reforms across time and space. Beginning with Sweden’s early amalgamation reforms during the late 1940s and early 1950s, it assesses how the evolution of the Welfare State, decentralization, urbanization, and economic growth have all impacted amalgamation reforms in ten other European countries. The book challenges the prevailing theory that amalgamations are implemented by rational design to improve the efficiency and capacity of local governments. Instead, it argues that state sovereignty, regime changes, centralization of authority and diffusion effects are more likely causes of the adoption of municipal amalgamation reforms. It will appeal to all those interested in public administration, public policy, European politics, and local governance studies. António F. Abstract: Potshots at regaining her hegemonic position have underlined Nigeria’s international relations history in the last 25 years or more. The ‘Giant of Africa’ has seen its best years, and yet has witnessed its lowest times in global politics, which deserves a holistic study. This book is that gap-filler, examining Nigeria’s declining political hegemony in Africa between 1985 and 2022, a period characterised by dramatic internal political, social, and economic downturns that negatively affected her image and international relations. The study traces the country’s shifting leadership and foreign policies through different eras. Chapters analysing the Nigerian foreign policy internal dynamics, ideology, her military and civilian leadership, and how these played out in Nigeria's regional influence, paint a holistic politico-historical portrait of a nation in hegemonic flux from 1989 continuing into the present day. Deploying National Role Conception as an analytical tool to contextualise and dissect Nigerian foreign policy, this book deepens our understanding of the nation’s international relations and challenges preconceptions as to how, and through what lenses, foreign policies of declining states can and should be considered. Through its approach, the book offers scholars, students, researchers and policymakers fresh perspectives and tools for analysing foreign policies of states, particularly Nigeria. Abstract: “Dr Myrodias makes an important contribution by showing how the response to the recent crises solidified Greece and Portugal’s subordinate position in the Eurozone. This was part-engineered in the interests of northern European economies – a dismaying replay of how European colonial states earlier engineered the dependent status of their colonies to boost their own economic growth and political power. Wade, Professor of Political Economy, London School of Economics (LSE) Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought (2008) “Dr Myrodias’ concise and brisk analysis of the fate of Greece and Portugal in recent crises has numerous distinctive virtues. Of these, the most important is that Dr Myrodias frames the core issues as matters of economic theory. A more compelling test of theoretical economics is difficult to imagine.” - James K. Galbraith, Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations and Professor of Government, University of Texas at Austin “The Euro Area has lurched from crisis to crisis in the near quarter of a century since its foundation. The Eurozone faced two such crises soon after its foundation. Abstract: This work in two parts examines the relations between transnational societies and states. The second volume of this work contends that current policies meant to control or enhance transnational flows have led to the emergence of a transnational policy apparatus coined the transnational state. This book proposes an innovative conceptual framework to grasp the transformations of the contemporary state in both sending and receiving countries. It shows how states expand beyond national territorial limits by reaching out to migrants where they are. In response to the migrants’ endeavours to circumvent the constrains imposed by selective migration policies, public authorities expand the reach of their control beyond (externalisation), within (internalisation) and at (expansion) borders. A totalitarian temptation seems to have seized contemporary state bureaucracies, affecting the very nature of borders and societies. The core argument of this research is that the development of the transnational state is not random. It is a process shaping and shaped by the structures of the transnational society. Abstract: “A much-needed, timely analysis of evolving cyber security concerns for liberal democracies. Katagiri puts forward the notion of cyber deterrence as presenting viable strategic options for countering hacking group sponsored by authoritarian states. This erudite and balanced study on the opportunities and challenges associated with cyber deterrence in democratic contexts will make a significant contribution to literature on emerging technologies in International Relations.” - Ingvild Bode, Associate Professor and Principal Investigator of ERC AutoNorms, Center for War Studies, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark "Katagiri moves us beyond the often too military-focused analyses of cyber operations and defense. The book is a tremendous recovery of the fundamental difficulty that liberal democracies have in cyberspace. How liberal democracies defend their cyber networks from hackers is unrelenting in its concern for the incomplete and often weak tools that democracies have to deter opportunistic states. A must-read for any scholar thinking about states and cyberspace strategies." -Dr. Nina Kollars, Associate Professor, Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute, United States Naval War College This book outlines the main technological, legal, and operational options that liberal democratic nations have when confronting challenges in cyberspace. It offers a range of policy ideas they can adopt to make their defense stronger and deter future cyber-attacks. The author explores how liberal societies, especially those in the Western world, have so far confronted a variety of cybersecurity challenges by hackers in nondemocratic regimes like Russia and China. and zooms in on the main challenges that democratic states face in adopting strategies of cyber deterrence, and how those challenges shape their ability to actually deter hackers. Abstract: This edited book focuses on the intersection of return migration and crises in non-Western countries. The book explores a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives while offering practical insights to address the intricate issues surrounding return migration and crises. The topics covered within this volume include return migration trends, the pivotal roles and contributions of return migrants, the social, psychological, and policy challenges faced by returnees, emerging issues stemming from return migration in their home countries, and the public and formal responses to return migration and the reintegration of returnees, and the roles of crises in these areas. This edited volume brings together diverse perspectives of academic researchers, practitioners, and policymakers on return migration. The book features cases of multiple non-Western countries in Asia (Philippines, China, India), Europe (Lithuania, Turkey, & Ukraine), the Middle East and North Africa (Morocco), and South America and the Caribbean (Mexico, Peru & Dominican Republic). Findings provide a unique opportunity to critically explore current thinking on return migration and investigate the relationship between migration and crisis from varying policy and operational viewpoints. This book, hence, attends to practitioners to develop creative solutions to both global and local policies and practices of return migration management in emerging market countries, which will support and accommodate both their returnees and residents amid challenging times. Jungwon Yeo is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. Her primary research focuses on enhancing attitudes, behaviors, and cognitions of diverse individuals and organizations and their collective decision-making process in critical policy contexts, such as disaster and crisis management, migration, and human security. Additionally, her research explores key topics shaping contemporary discourse in public administration, including accountability, ethics, leadership, and social justice, and their consequential impact on public service provision. Her research experience is demonstrated through refereed publications, national and international conference presentations, and multi-year interdisciplinary research grant awards.

Abstract: “Economics aims to be the study of making people’s lives better, but the focus has for too long been too narrow. This book makes a compelling case for measures of economic progress that go beyond GDP growth to put human wellbeing firmly in the spotlight, setting out a new system for assessing success.” -- Dame Diane Coyle, Bennett Professor of Public Policy, University of Cambridge, UK “Michael Joffe’s book complements the growing criticisms to GDP as the sole (or main) metric to measure economic success with new outcome indicators that measure attainment of human needs and well-being. From this point of view, it is not only a step forward in the direction of overcoming the old and counterproductive economic metrics, but it puts forward a practical, actionable approach to measuring economic “growth” in a completely different way. I hope this book will have the reception it deserves, as a clear theoretical essay and a source of concrete and novel metrics for economics based on human needs”. -- Paolo Vineis, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology, MRC Centre for Environment and Health, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, UK This open access book argues that a new policy approach is required in order to tackle the numerous problems the world is currently facing. The priority should be on achieving better outcomes for people, especially those facing deprivation or precariousness, by meeting their basic needs. In order to achieve this, the book develops a monitoring system that can act as an objective, an incentive, and a criterion of success for policy makers at all levels of government and in civil society, as well as providing information to guide specific actions. In doing so, the book aims to promote good health and positive social functioning by providing a new approach to help assess how well basic human needs are being met. This involves monitoring the outcomes of the economy that ought to satisfy these needs. It will appeal to all those interested in public policy, official statistics and monitoring, public health and wellbeing, as well as practitioners. Michael Joffe is affiliated with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Imperial College London, UK. He writes on topics in economics. .

Abstract: Essays on Music, Adolescence, and Identity: The Adolescentia Project explores music consumption, self-discovery, media culture, and memory through autoethnographic essays on albums we loved during adolescence covering three decades (1980-2010) as the music industry and socio-cultural identity landscapes in the United States significantly changed. By examining these influential albums, we can better understand the role of popular culture in identity construction and the long-term impact of these formative musical experiences. Abstract: “This insightful ethnography provides a captivating exploration of Burgaz Island where different classes and ethno-religious groups live together. Through the concept of "conviviality," Dr Duru reveals the dynamic social interactions that shape the island's way of life and the islanders’ collective identity. This book offers valuable insights for scholars, students, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the potential for shared lives across diverse communities.” -Elif S. Uyar, Department of Sociology, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey This open access book tells stories of conviviality, solidarity, and everyday management of conflicts and tensions, by building on original, long-term ethnographic research (fourteen months in 2009-2010, followed by fieldwork trips until now) on Burgaz, an island home to more than twenty ethnic and religious groups from different socio-economic backgrounds. The island provides an excellent case study of post-Ottoman conviviality, as the homogenisation process during the nation-building stage of modern Turkey triggered migrations from the island, especially of non-Muslims, yet the island’s population retains elements of its Byzantine and Ottoman diversity. The book explores the islanders’ representation of diversity through ethnographic research, media analysis and interviews, and shifts the analytical framework of Post-Ottoman plurality from “coexistence/toleration” to that of conviviality. The author critically engages with the literature on multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism and conceptualises conviviality as both living together in diversity as shared ways of living as well as living with difference. The book further explores the relationship between conviviality, solidarity, coexistence/toleration, intoleration and nationalism.

Artificial Intelligence Valuation: Empirical Cases and Templates.
Abstract: The book discusses the main valuation methodologies of artificial intelligence (AI). Company valuation goes hand in hand with estimating intangible assets like AI, which are linked to higher risk and lower collateral value. Their accounting is controversial, and the most widely used valuation approaches are based on market, income, or cost-related metrics. The volume discusses in detail the valuation approaches such as the discounted cash flows (remembering that “cash is king”) or the empirical market multipliers and comparables. The approaches are complemented by several models, including advanced business planning that incorporates machine learning, digital scalability networks, or validating blockchains. The book, with a tailor-made theoretical background backed by empirical cases, shows how to evaluate AI products, such as chatbots or virtual assistants, for AI established producers, startups, or traditional “brick-and-mortar” AI users. The comprehensive set of techniques and methodologies will interest researchers, students, and practitioners in corporate finance, intellectual property valuation, and financial technology. Abstract: The first volume of this three-volume resource presents a historical analysis of the practice of smoking, the rise and fall of the cigarette market, and the successes and failures of tobacco control. While taxes, regulations, and various behavioral and pharmacological interventions have helped many people to quit smoking, they have not helped everyone. The authors explain why these strategies alone are likely insufficient to elicit smoking cessation among the remaining group, and why “ramping up” these strategies may also backfire. Drawing on examples from the U.S., Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, this volume introduces the technology of e-cigarettes, explaining the origins of the innovation, patterns of use among consumers, and the perception of e-cigarettes among key stakeholder groups. Abstract: This book explores the ideas of nine renowned economists to present the evolution of economic thought on the development and trajectory of capitalism as a system. The author shows how this diverse group of thinkers are linked by their thinking on the future role of capitalism in society and fleshes out the influences informing each economist’s work. With chapters dedicated to Karl Marx, Joseph Schumpeter, Thorstein Veblen, Henry George, Gunnar Myrdal, Alfred Marshall, Allyn Young, J. M. Keynes and Amartya Sen, the book aims to analyse contrasting views on the future of capitalism in historical perspective and make a critical assessment of their insights in contemporary contexts. While considering the views of some thinkers such as Marx, Schumpeter, and Veblen who critiqued capitalism, the book does not view capitalism beyond redemption, nor is meant to be a critique of capitalism in its conclusions. Rather, it argues that thinkers like Marshall, Myrdal, Young and Keynes were more right in their optimism about the future prospects of capitalism than many others. It argues that capitalism can be reformed through the democratic process in a more humane direction. This can happen if democracy works for all, and if discriminating privileges and crony capitalism are eschewed. This book is valuable reading for scholars and students of economic history and the history of economic thought. Ramesh Chandra is an independent economist who has published extensively including three books. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, UK, and studied economics at the Delhi School of Economics, University of California (Berkeley) and University of Glasgow. He has held professorships at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Indian Council of Research on International Economic Relations, India, among others. His research interests include trade policy and growth, the relationship between economic thought and development economics, and the history of economic thought. .

Abstract: Chapter 1: The Craft -- Chapter 2: Shaping Justice -- Chapter 3: Feeling Justice -- Chapter 4: Being Justice -- Chapter 5: Crafting.
Abstract: This book is about the making of justice. Despite the growing scholarship on transitional and transformative justice, contested struggles for justice in times of political change fail to get the nuanced attention we think they deserve. It seeks to understand how the making of justice is a craft and how this process of craft making is itself a source of political change. The authors introduce a new and novel conceptual framework of justicecraft which sheds light upon political change by unpacking five key elements—the skills, knowledge, labor, affect, and materiality—involved in contested struggles for justice. Justicecraft illuminates the stories and struggles for justice, enabling a greater understanding of accompanying social, political, and cultural shifts in society which unfold during times of conflict. By framing justice as craft, the authors offer a more fluid understanding of how people are producing justice on the ground—and identify the means, the instruments, the language, and claims involved in the process. Each chapter applies the framework of justicecraft to diverse global case illustrations of struggles against past, present, and future injustices and wrongdoings and draws out the key elements embedded in these processes. Abstract: This book presents a comprehensive examination of how leadership and collaboration are discursively performed in professional communication, using real-world data from a UK public sector IT team. Taking an auto-ethnographic approach to workplace talk, the author examines the language involved in the performance of different team-based professional roles, examining how professional identity and relationships are indexed through casual face-to-face talk in an office environment. This investigation of how a group of people come together in an effort to achieve shared workplace goals relates to key debates in the area of professional communication, putting forward new theoretical and methodological frameworks for understanding and analysing how person-orientated aspects of professional communication shape discourses of work. This book appeals to a wide and interdisciplinary audience, including advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics and researchers specialising in applied linguistics broadly, and professional communication in particular, as well as consultants and practitioners working across a wide range of professional sectors. Abstract: This book provides a fully-fledged exploration of science and technology studies (STS) perspective applied to algorithms developed to support care processes. By concentrating on algorithmic technologies for supporting processes of social and health care, the book intersects topics connected to technoscientific innovation and specifically digital transformation for health care. By offering different attempts of deconstructing algorithmic technologies, the book provides a landmark reference for those interested in undertaking research focused on areas connected to algorithmic decision-making for health care. The book will be an invaluable reference for scholars interested in the STS debate and related fields (e.g.,human–computer interaction, computer supported cooperative work, participatory design, and sociology of health and medicine). This book responds to a growing interest in the application of algorithms’ to local and national care systems. The book balances theoretical and empirical analysis bringing together experienced and early-career scholars. This book will be of interest to researchers in STS as well as healthcare professionals and managers as some of the topics covered help to critically reconsider some facets of planning through algorithmic technologies supporting the practice of healthcare and decision-making. Abstract: This open access book provides the first systematic analysis of the role of the media in the rise of illiberalism, based on an original theoretical framework and extensive empirical research in Eastern Europe – a region that serves as a key battleground in the global advance of illiberalism. Liberal democracies across the world are facing a range of challenges, from the growing influence of illiberal leaders and parties to deepening polarization and declining trust in political elites and mainstream media. Although these developments attracted significant scholarly attention, the factors that contribute to the spreading of illiberalism remain poorly understood, and the communication perspective on illiberalism is particularly underdeveloped. Štětka and Mihelj address this gap by introducing the concept of the illiberal public sphere, identifying the key stages in its development, and explaining what makes illiberalism distinct from related phenomena such as populism. Theiranalysis reveals how and why the changing communication environment facilitates selective exposure to ideologically and politically homogeneous sources, fosters changes in normative assumptions that guide media trust, increases vulnerability to disinformation, and goes hand in hand with growing hostility to immigration and LGBTQ+ rights. The findings challenge widespread assumptions about digital platforms as key channels of illiberalism and suggest that their role shifts as the illiberal sphere progresses. The arguments presented in this book have important implications for future research on challenges to liberal democracy, as well as for journalists, media regulators and other professionals committed to rebuilding media trust and containing the forces of polarization. Václav Štětka is Reader in Comparative Political Communication at the Centre for Research in Communication and Culture at Loughborough University, UK. Sabina Mihelj is Professor of Media and Cultural Analysis at the Centre for Research in Communication and Culture at Loughborough University, UK.

Abstract: The book proposes an analytical map of developments in deliberative democracy (DD) that departs from previous attempts to explain them by using alleged "turns" (epistemic turn, empirical turn, etc.), or "generational shifts". This analytical approach clarifies what is at stake each time new “conceptual innovations” are proposed. The analysis of the various conceptual innovations proposed is then connected to the possible "institutional solutions" devised to boost the legitimacy of current liberal democratic regimes. The scope of the book is not merely academic, devoted to tracking the progress of a subdisciplinary field in democratic theory, but includes assessment of the public relevance of the academic debates developed in that subfield. The aim of the book is finally that of challenging the methodological tenets employed by deliberative democracy authors working within the four conceptual areas identified, and the vision of democracy they uphold. Developments in DD have been dominated by liberal perspectives subscribing to the minimalist notion of democracy defended by political economists. In challenging this minimalist notion of democracy, the book proposes an alternative way of seeing democracy. Antonino Palumbo (PhD) is a political theorist working on globalization, the transformation of governance, and the implications of changes in state steering for modern representative democracies. .

Abstract: This book explores portraits of significant women living in central and southeastern Europe whose lives and activities remain unknown, uncovering their lifestyles as well as the social entanglements relating to their education. The book also examines transnationality and modernity, arguing that during the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries transculturality as a cultural marker was in contrast with national fallacies. In addition to this, it provides insight into the controversies concerning women’s social standing, and it investigates the prevailing social norms, restrictions, and biases that affected their lives. The book draws on a wide range of original printed sources such as school archives, government documents, newspapers, and journals as well as secondary sources of literature. Abstract: This book examines Nietzsche’s early writings on education, paying particular attention to his thought on scholarship and teaching. Giosuè Ghisalberti examines Nietzsche’s view of himself as a teacher in the broader context of his reflections on scholarship and philology, and puts Nietzsche’s examination into conversation with prominent themes in his later philosophy (including morality, truth, and language). The book is to be read as an assessment of our social predicament, in and out of the university. “We Scholars” According to Nietzsche develops ideas on our contemporary world most especially in institutions of higher learning and how morality is proving to be inimical to freedom. Abstract: This book delves into the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development's (IGAD) endeavors to enhance security and economic integration in the Horn of Africa. While aspiring to unite and stabilize the region, IGAD faces complex historical, strategic, and geographical challenges. Through a political economy approach, the book showcases IGAD’s strengths and weaknesses and employs neorealist and regional security complex theories to analyze the involvement of states and non-state actors in IGAD's security agenda, particularly in relation to Somalia. The study highlights opportunities and obstacles to sustainable regional integration, offering practical policy suggestions for curbing armed uprisings and inter-state disputes. It dissects the geopolitical dynamics involving international players like the United States and China, as well as regional powers such as Ethiopia, in IGAD's pursuit of security and economic progress. Valuable for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders invested in the Horn's security and development, the book bridges gaps in the literature, shedding light on African political development, regional peace and security. Abstract: This book seeks to explore a fundamental obscurity in electoral behavior literature: while socioeconomic status is typically robustly and positively associated with a higher propensity for voting worldwide, the relationship in Africa is either negative or non-existent. Building upon the author’s previous works relating to political participation, behavior and electoral processes, this work focuses specifically on 35 sub-Saharan African political system case studies and analyzes why resource-poor Africans tend to display greater electoral participation than their more comparatively affluent counterparts. Drawing from a methodological–theoretical framework utilizing Afrobarometer data and group mobilization theories such as the civic voluntarism model, electoral clientelism, democratic quality, preference theory and institutional perspectives, this book makes an original contribution to analyzing African regions less well-examined in existing comparative participatory political science literatures. Elvis Bisong Tambe is a senior lecturer in Political Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. His research interests lie in the field of political behavior, political participation, public opinion, voting and electoral processes, with a focus on new and emerging democracies. He is the author of Electoral Participation in Newly Consolidated Democracies: Turnout in Africa, Latin America, East Asia and Post-Communist Europe (Routledge, 2021).

Abstract: “For anyone interested in contemporary Romania, the publication of Post-Communist Progress and Stagnation at 35, is an exciting event. Ably edited by distinguished Professors Lavinia Stan and Diane Vancea, this volume brings together sophisticated analyses by some of the most clear-sighted specialists to argue that Romania’s post-communist transformation has failed to achieve even an approximation of a liberal democracy or to create conditions in which the mainstream media, the educational system, or the economy itself can operate free of corruption and abuse.” --Sabrina P. Ramet, author of East Central Europe and Communism: Politics, Culture, and Society, 1943-1991 (Routledge, 2023) This book examines Romania’s efforts to consolidate liberal democracy and market economy, as desired by the generation who effected change in 1989 and required by the European Union. The ousting of Nicolae Ceausescu, leader of an autarchic and nationalistic dictatorship, underscored the limitations of politically engineering change when rule of law is weak, institutions are misused, and intolerance and cheating are prevalent. Despite initial hopes, Romania’s transition combined progress and stagnation, missed opportunities, detours, unintended consequences, and success. The contributions illustrate the tenuous relationship between continuity and change in a country that is yet to catch up with its neighbors. Lavinia Stan is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Post-Communist Studies at St. Francis Xavier University, Canada. Diane Vancea is Professor of Economics and International Affairs and President of the Senate of the University “Ovidius” in Constanta, Romania. .

Abstract: This book delves into the complex dynamics of legitimizing power in fragile states. With five comprehensive chapters, it analyzes the geopolitical, domestic, and international dimensions of fragile states. The unique contribution lies in unraveling specific forms of legitimization linked to various types of state fragility, providing a nuanced understanding. The book distinguishes between temporary crises and chronic fragility, crucial for shaping effective international support strategies. It addresses the challenges and consequences of weak legitimacy on global security, highlighting its impact on aid interventions and systemic stability. The author's analysis emphasizes the diverse nature of political regimes in fragile states, incorporating considerations of hybrid regimes. Additionally, it explores the dynamics of authoritarian enclaves at the sub-state level, revealing their potential national influence. By scrutinizing the decline of trust in democratic systems, the book addresses contemporary challenges, making it a vital resource for understanding and navigating the complexities of fragile states' political landscapes. Ryszard Ficek is a Lecturer at the College of Social and Economics in Przeworsk, Poland.

Abstract: This book presents the reality of democratic reversals and waves of coups cutting through Africa, explores the political economy of coups, and through a case study approach, provides a nuanced analysis of the negative impacts of coups in Africa and interrogates the roles of African regional organisations in curtailing coups and foreign powers in distorting the security architecture of African states, particularly in the Sahel region. It proffers sustainable policy templates for politicaldevelopment, professionalism of the military and the subsequent withdrawal of the military from African politics. Apart from its policy relevance, it will serve as a resource pool for researchers working in the area of African political development, peace and security, and security sector reforms. With the incremental exit of France from the Sahel, the book will also offer a nuanced perspective on the ‘scramble for the soul’ of the Sahel by non-Western powers, such as China, Russia, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Abstract: This edited collection offers an in-depth exploration of the role of landscape and place as literary ‘settings’. It examines the multifaceted relationships between authors, narrators, and characters to their locales, as well as broader considerations of the significance of the representation of landscape in a world deeply affected by human interventions. Consisting of case studies of projects that engage with these questions, as well as research examining the theoretical underpinnings of both creative practices/processes and post-textual analysis of published works, this volume is both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in scope. In the context of the climate crisis and a pandemic which has caused us to re-evaluate the significance of landscape and the environment, it responds to the need to engage current trends within the academy and in broader social debate about our relationship to the natural world. Philippa Holloway is a novelist and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Staffordshire University, UK. As a writer and academic her work is published in internationally, and she has curated international writing projects and collaborated on interdisciplinary projects related to energy production and nuclearity. Craig Jordan-Baker is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Brighton, UK. He is principally a writer of fiction and non-fiction writer and has published peer-reviewed research in a range of creative writing journals. He is also a dramatist, short story writer, arts journalist, walker and forager.

Abstract: “This groundbreaking study stands as the foremost exploration of Heydar Aliyev’s vision and policies, illuminating the remarkable reconstruction of Azerbaijan and the establishment of its modern state institutions. This is not just a book; it’s a key to unravelling the roots of today’s prosperous Azerbaijani state and society. An essential read for those seeking profound insights into Azerbaijan's journey of transformation.” – Hikmet Cetin, Former Foreign Minister of Turkey. “This book delves into Aliyev’s multifaceted legacy – political, economic, and social. An invaluable resource for academia and the wider audience, it provides crucial insights into the strategically vital country and its international relations, both regionally and with major powers, during a pivotal period in world history.” – Michael B. Bishku, Professor Emeritus of History, Augusta University, Georgia, USA. This edited book examines and analyses Heydar Aliyev, the architect and founder of modern, post-Soviet Azerbaijan. The editors of the volume discuss developments between 1993 and 2003 – a decade that saw the establishment of the institutional foundations of the current republic, the adoption of a new form of national identity, the redefinition of the concept of the Azerbaijani state, and the creation of a security establishment designed to gain control of territories Armenia had held since the 1988-1994 war over Karabakh. The book explains why this fateful period had far-reaching consequences for Azerbaijan as a fully formed state and society, as well as major implications for its political future and its geopolitical strategy. M. Hakan Yavuz is Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah, USA. Michael M. Gunter is Professor of Political Science at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, USA. Abstract: Direct Democracy is inexpensive. The average cost per vote is about USD 10. So, maybe we should have more of them? Before you answer that question, you need to know the facts about this type of complementary democracy.
