    Abstract: In Conflict, Identity, and State Formation in East Timor 2000-2017, James Scambary analyses the complex interplay between local and national level conflict and politics in the independence period. Communal conflict, often enacted by a variety of informal groups such as gangs and martial arts groups, has been a constant feature of East Timor`s post-independence landscape. A focus on statebuilding, however, in academic discourse has largely overlooked this conflict, and the informal networks that drive Timorese politics and society. Drawing on over a decade of fieldwork, Scambary documents the range of different cultural and historical dynamics and identities that drive conflict, and by which local conflicts and non-state actors became linked to national conflict, and laid the foundations of a clientelist state.     Abstract: Border regions are often considered to be the neglected margins. In this book, Paul Nugent argues that through a comparison of the Senegambia and the trans-Volta (Ghana/Togo), we can see that the geographical margins have shaped notional centres at least as much as the reverse. Through a study of three centuries of history, this book demonstrates that states were forged through an extended process of converting a topography of settled states and slaving frontiers into colonial borders. It argues that post-colonial states and larger social contracts have been configured very differently as a consequence. It underscores the impact on regional dynamics and the phenomenon of peripheral urbanism. Nugent also addresses the manner in which a variegated sense of community has been forged amongst Mandinka, Jola, Ewe and Agotime populations who have both shaped and been shaped by the border. This is an exercise in reciprocal comparison and shuttles between scales, from the local and the particular to the national and the regional.

Diese Netzwerke verbinden auf vielfältige Weise Menschen und Institutionen in Kamerun und Deutschland sowie deren unterschiedliche Vorstellungen und Ansprüche auf diese Dinge.     Abstract: Originally published in 1987, this book traces the broad outlines of urban food policy, drawing attention to the limited knowledge of regional social history. Urban food supply systems in Africa have developed very fast, in the midst of societies in which food production was not in general oriented to feeding distant populations of 'specialist consumers'. Institutional and political links had to be forged between town and country if food supply was to be cheap and predictable. This volume explores the political and material dynamics of urban food supply through 4 case studies: Kano, Yaounde, Dar es Salaam and Harare.

    Abstract: Majoritarian State traces the ascendance of Hindu nationalism in contemporary India. Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP administration has established an ethno-religious and populist style of rule since 2014. Its agenda is also pursued beyond the formal branches of government, as the new dispensation portrays conventional social hierarchies as intrinsic to Indian culture while condoning communal and caste- and gender-based violence. The contributors explore how Hindutva ideology has permeated the state apparatus and formal institutions, and how Hindutva activists exert control over civil society via vigilante groups, cultural policing and violence.

    Abstract: Between 2009 and 2013 Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer conducted fieldwork in Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec to examine the political, social, and ecological dimensions of moving from fossil fuels to wind power. Their work manifested itself as a new ethnographic form: the duograph—a combination of two single-authored books that draw on shared fieldsites, archives, and encounters that can be productively read together, yet can also stand alone in their analytic ambitions. In her volume, Ecologics, Howe narrates how an antidote to the Anthropocene became both failure and success. Tracking the development of what would have been Latin America's largest wind park, Howe documents indigenous people's resistance to the project and the political and corporate climate that derailed its renewable energy potential. Using feminist and more-than-human theories, Howe demonstrates how the dynamics of energy and environment cannot be captured without understanding how human aspirations for energy articulate with nonhuman beings, technomaterial objects, and the geophysical forces that are at the heart of wind and power.

    Abstract: Die globale ökonomische Vernetzung sorgt dafür, dass Menschen in aller Welt nicht nur eine dramatische Veränderung ihrer wirtschaftlichen, sondern auch ihrer kulturellen Existenz erfahren. Dabei öffnet sich zunehmend eine Schere zwischen den sogenannten Industrie- und den Entwicklungsländern. Die neoliberale Geisteshaltung, die dieser Politik zugrunde liegt, kann durchaus als `wirtschaftlicher Imperialismus` verstanden werden. Dementsprechend muss man sich fragen, ob man, wenn keine komplette Kehrtwende möglich sein sollte, dann doch zumindest ein Durchbrechen dieser Strukturen erreichen kann?Diese interdisziplinäre Länderstudie systematisiert in holistischer Weise die sozioökonomischen Aspekte der tradierten kleinbäuerlichen Landwirtschaft und arbeitet die wirtschaftsethnologischen und entwicklungspolitischen Grundlagen des Fairen Handels sowie der ökologischen Landwirtschaft am Beispiel der sogenannten Kandyan Homegardens in Sri Lanka heraus. Darüber hinaus beschäftigt sich die Studie mit den Themen Wirtschaftsentwicklung und Wirtschaftswachstum als kulturintegriertem Prozess. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird dann auch die Frage beantwortet, inwieweit Fairer Handel und ökologischer Landbau in Kombination mit tradierten landwirtschaftlichen Praktiken einen positiven Beitrag zur Entwicklung Sri Lankas sowie zur Nachhaltigkeit der Landwirtschaft beitragen können.

    Abstract: This book examines the relationship between inequalities and identities in the context of an unprecedented state advocacy of human rights with a distinct emphasis on (ethnic) group rights in post-civil war Ethiopia. The analysis is set against the background of a dramatic state remaking by a rebellion movement (the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front - EPRDF) that seized control of the Ethiopian state in 1991, after a decisive battlefield victory over an unpopular regime. The new government of former rebels pledged to institute a new system of ethnic self-government that celebrated ethnic diversity with a firm pledge to guarantee basic human rights. After nearly three decades in office, however, the Ethiopian government is challenged by the resilience of identity-based inequalities it ostensibly sought to end, and by protests against its own policies and practices that intensified inequality. The events in Ethiopia, reverberating throughout the Horn of Africa, have inspired heated and often polarized debates between academics, policy experts, political activists, and the media. Data D. Barata contributes to this debate through a nuanced ethnographic analysis of why identities with distinct notions of inequality persist, even after relentless interventions and ideological repudiations. The contestations and struggles over political representation, local governance, cultural identities, land and religion that the book examines are shaped, one way or another, by the global human rights discourse that has inspired millions of Africans to confront entrenched structures of power. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of anthropology, African studies, political science, sociology and cultural studies.

    Abstract: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is a Hindu nationalist volunteer organisation. It is also the parent of India`s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Prime Minister Modi was himself a career RSS office-holder, or pracharak. This book explores how the RSS and its affiliates have benefitted from India`s economic development and concurrent social dislocation, with rapid modernisation creating a sense of rootlessness, disrupting traditional hierarchies, and attracting many upwardly mobile groups to the organisation.India seems more willing than ever to accept the RSS`s narrative of Hindu nationalism--one that seeks to assimilate Hindus into a common identity representing true `Indianness`. Yet the RSS has also come to resemble `the Congress system`, with a socially diverse membership containing a distinct left, right and centre. The organisation`s most significant dilemma is how to reconcile the assault from its far right on cultural issues like cow protection with condemnations of globalisation from the left flank.Andersen and Damle offer an essential account of the RSS`s rapid rise in recent decades, tracing how it has evolved in response to economic liberalisation and assessing its long-term impact on Indian politics and society.

    Abstract: Namibia`s main liberation movement, the South West Africa People`s Organisation (SWAPO), relied heavily on outside support for its armed struggle against South Africa`s occupation of what it called South West Africa. While East Germany`s solidarity with Namibia`s struggle for national self-determination has received attention, little research has been done on West Germany`s policy towards Namibia, which must be seen against the backdrop of inter-German rivalry. The impact of the wider realities of the Cold War on Namibia`s rocky path to independence leaves ample room for research and new interpretations. In West Germany and Namibia`s Path to Independence, 1969-1990: Foreign Policy and Rivalry with East Germany, Thorsten Kern shows that German division played a vital role in West Germany`s position towards Namibia during the Cold War. West German foreign policy towards Namibia, at the height of the Namibian liberation struggle, is investigated and discussed against the backdrop of rivalry with East Germany. The two states` deeply diverging policies, characterised in this context by competition for infuence over SWAPO, were strongly affected by the Cold War rivalry between the capitalist West and the communist East. Yet ultimately the dynamics of rapprochement helped to bring about Namibia`s independence.This book is based upon a doctoral dissertation presented to the University of Cape Town in 2016. Kern conducted research in the National Archives of Namibia and in German archives and his work draws on interviews with contemporary witnesses. (Umschlagtext)

    Abstract: This book analyses initiatives and concepts initiated by China, Japan and South Korea (the Republic of Korea) towards Central Asia to ascertain their impact on regionalism and regional cooperation in Central Asia.Using the case study of Uzbekistan, the book focuses on the formation of the discourse of engagement with the region of Central Asia through the notion of the Silk Road narrative. The author puts forward the prospects for engagement and cooperation in the region by analysing initiatives such as the Eurasian/Silk Road Diplomacy of Japan of 1997, the Shanghai Process by China, Korean corporate offensive, and other so-called Silk Road initiatives (One Belt One Road, OBOR or the Belt and Road Initiative, BRI). The book argues that material factors and interests of state are not the only motivations for engagement with Central Asia. The author suggests that cultural environment and identity act as additional behavioural incentives for the states cooperation as these factors create a space for actors in global politics. The book deconstructs Chinese narratives and foreign policy towards smaller states and presents a more balanced account of Central Asian foreign policy by taking into account Japanese and South Korean approaches to Central Asia.This book encourages wider theoretical discussions of Central Asian-specific forms of cooperation and relationships.     Abstract: The Act of Living explores the relation between development and marginality in Ethiopia, one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Replete with richly depicted characters and multi-layered narratives on history, everyday life and visions of the future, Marco Di Nunzio's ethnography of hustling and street life is an investigation of what is to live, hope and act in the face of the failing promises of development and change. Di Nunzio follows the life trajectories of two men, "Haile" and "Ibrahim," as they grow up in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, enter street life to get by, and turn to the city's expanding economies of work and entrepreneurship to search for a better life. Apparently favourable circumstances of development have not helped them achieve social improvement. As their condition of marginality endures, the two men embark in restless attempts to transform living into a site for hope and possibility. By narrating Haile and Ibrahim's lives, The Act of Living explores how and why development continues to fail the poor, how marginality is understood and acted upon in a time of promise, and why poor people's claims for open-endedness can lead to better and more just alternative futures. Tying together anthropology, African studies, political science, and urban studies, Di Nunzio takes readers on a bold exploration of the meaning of existence, hope, marginality, and street life.

But in the real (geopolitical) world, they coexist as distinct, albeit overlapping entities: the former a state's delimitation of territory; the latter the social delineation of differences. The refugee crisis in Europe showed how racial and ethnic boundaries are often instrumentalised to justify the strengthening of state borders - regardless of the cost in human life. But there are other, less tragic, examples that illustrate this overlapping as well, and ultimately demonstrate that the oft-differentiated spheres of borders and boundaries are best understood through their relationship to one another.     Abstract: The border region of the Sonoran Desert, which spans southern Arizona in the United States and northern Sonora, Mexico, has attracted national and international attention. But what is less discussed in national discourses is the impact of current border policies on the Native peoples of the region. There are twenty-six tribal nations recognized by the U.S. federal government in the southern border region and approximately eight groups of Indigenous peoples in the United States with historical ties to Mexico - the Yaqui, the O'odham, the Cocopah, the Kumeyaay, the Pai, the Apaches, the Tiwa (Tigua), and the Kickapoo.Divided Peoples addresses the impact border policies have on traditional lands and the peoples who live there&;whether environmental degradation, border patrol harassment, or the disruption of traditional ceremonies. Anthropologist Christina Leza shows how such policies affect the traditional cultural survival of Indigenous peoples along the border. The author examines local interpretations and uses of international rights tools by Native activists, counterdiscourse on the U.S.-Mexico border, and challenges faced by Indigenous border activists when communicating their issues to a broader public.Through ethnographic research with grassroots Indigenous activists in the region, the author reveals several layers of division - the division of Indigenous peoples by the physical U.S.-Mexico border, the divisions that exist between Indigenous perspectives and mainstream U.S. perspectives regarding the border, and the traditionalist/nontraditionalist split among Indigenous nations within the United States. Divided Peoples asks us to consider the possibilities for challenging settler colonialism both in sociopolitical movements and in scholarship about Indigenous peoples and lands.

    Abstract: Die Rolle Japans als koloniale Besatzungsmacht im Ersten Weltkrieg ist noch weitgehend unerforscht. Japan erklärte Deutschland am 23. August 1914 aufgrund des anglo-japanischen Bündnisses den Krieg und besetzte daraufhin die deutschen Kolonien in Mikronesien nördlich des Äquators.Yuko Maezawa untersucht in ihrer Studie das Verhältnis zwischen Japanern, Deutschen und Mikronesiern. Im Gegensatz zur vorherigen Kolonialmacht Deutschland war Japan kein christliches Land. Religion und Bildung wurden nach der japanischen Besetzung auf den Inseln strikt voneinander getrennt. Das Hauptziel der japanischen Erziehungspolitik war die Verbreitung der japanischen Sprache und die Japanisierung Mikronesiens, weshalb die Japaner vor Ort die propagandistische Theorie einer gleichen Rassenzugehörigkeit von Japanern und Mikronesien verbreiteten, um die Insulaner leichter in die japanische Gesellschaft zu integrieren. Dennoch wurde die deutsche christliche Missionstätigkeit während des Kriegs durch die Japaner toleriert. Erst nach Kriegsende wurden die deutschen katholischen Missionare durch spanische Jesuiten und die deutsche protestantische Liebenzeller Mission durch eine protestantische Missionsgesellschaft aus Japan (Nan'yo Dendo dan) ersetzt.Bei ihren umfangreichen Quellenrecherchen entdeckte Maezawa u. a. einen sehr kritischen Bericht des japanischen Außenministeriums über die japanische Kolonialpolitik in Mikronesien und veröffentlicht diesen zum ersten Mal. Er dokumentiert Übergriffe von körperlicher Gewalt sowie Vergewaltigungen und gilt als die einzige Quelle, in der Japaner das Benehmen ihrer Landsleute detailliert negativ darstellten.

    Abstract: The persistence of indigenous African markets in the context of a hostile or neglectful business and policy environment makes them worthy of analysis. An investigation of Afrocentric business ethics is long overdue. Attempting to understand the actions and efforts of informal traders and artisans from their own points of view, and analysing how they organise and get by, allows for viable approaches to be identified to integrate them into global urban models and cultures.Using the utu-ubuntu model to understand the activities of traders and artisans in Nairobi`s markets, this book explores how, despite being consistently excluded and disadvantaged, they shape urban spaces in and around the city, and contribute to its development as a whole. With immense resilience, and without discarding their own socio-cultural or economic values, informal traders and artisans have created a territorial complex that can be described as the African metropolis.African Markets and the Utu-buntu Business Model sheds light on the ethics and values that underpin the work of traders and artisans in Nairobi, as well as their resilience and positive impact on urbanisation. This book makes an important contribution to the discourse on urban economics and planning in African cities.

    Abstract: Les classes politiques africaines ont choisi, au lendemain des indépendances, de reproduire le cadre territorial hérité de la colonisation et ont entériné le principe de l`État-nation. Ce dernier contredit la plupart des ressorts politiques, économiques, culturels des sociétés africaines. Mais il a aussi fait l`objet de processus d`appropriation souvent massive, et toujours créative, de la part de l`ensemble de leurs acteurs.Cette double réalité rend insuffisantes la plupart des interprétations qui mettent l`accent sur des contradictions supposées insurmontables entre un État hérité de la colonisation et les sociétés du cru, sous la forme d`un jeu à somme nulle. Les choses sont en fait plus compliquées. Car les régimes de légitimité, de sécurité, de responsabilité sociale, d`enrichissement, de représentation culturelle et politique du « bon gouvernement » participent simultanément de ces deux dimensions historiques, d`espaces différents, de durées disparates qui s`encastrent les unes dans les autres plutôt qu`elles ne se succèdent.Cette distorsion inhérente aux sociétés africaines contemporaines est source d`ambivalence, plutôt que d`ambiguïté comme le pensaient Cheikh Hamidou Kane et Georges Balandier. Elle rend problématique l`institutionnalisation d`une gouvernance de la transparence, et tend à inscrire la compétition politique, l`accumulation de la richesse et la lutte sociale dans l`ordre de la violence.

    Abstract: Ruptures brings together leading and emerging international anthropologists to explore the concept of ‘rupture’. Understood as radical and often forceful forms of discontinuity, rupture is the active ingredient of the current sense of a world in turmoil, lying at the heart of some of the most defining experiences of our time: the rise of populist politics, the corollary impulse towards protest and even revolutionary change, as well as moves towards violence and terror, and the responses these moves elicit. Rupture is addressed in selected ethnographic and historical contexts: images of the guillotine in the French revolution; reactions to Trump’s election in the USA; the motivations of young Danes who join ISIS in Syria; ‘butterfly effect’ activism among environmental anarchists in northern Europe; the experiences of political trauma and its ‘repair’ through privately sponsored museums of Mao’s revolution in China; people’s experience of the devastating 2001 earthquake in Gujarat; the ‘inner’ rupture of Protestant faith among Danish nationalist theologians; and the attempt to invent ex nihilo an alphabet for use in Christian prophetic movements in Congo and Angola.

    Abstract: Das Auffälligste am Streit um das Humboldt Forum ist der Streit selbst. Er will nicht enden. Es ist wohl Ironie der Geschichte, dass ausgerechnet jene völkerkundlichen Sammlungen, die am weitesten von der ungeliebten preußisch-deutschen Vergangenheit wegführen sollten, den Konflikt am Ende doch wieder nach Hause brachten. Denn jetzt wird über die koloniale Verantwortung gestritten und die Frage der Restitution der Objekte. In all diesen Debatten haben sich die Historiker zu Wort gemeldet, die Kunstwissenschaftler, die Museumsfachleute, die Politiker und nicht zuletzt die Kritiker der nachkolonialen Verhältnisse schlechthin. Nur von denen, die sich von Berufs wegen am besten mit den in Rede stehenden Sammlungen auskennen, von den Ethnologen, war erstaunlich wenig zu hören.

    Abstract: "The postcolonial state in Burundi emerged through talk of truth and acts of violence. Beginning with the first democratic contest in late 1959, this book examines decolonisation as a search for certainty over the nature of postcolonial community and authority, seen from the vantage point of two communes on the border with Rwanda. While ethnicity was largely absent from early political struggles, by 1972 the postcolony was realised in a genocidal repression. Yet from democracy to genocide people and state spoke about politics in the language of truth: declarations of official truths, discussions of rumour, and riddles of political persuasion. Through these idioms of truth-speaking, the book examines differing conceptions over the nature of authority and its relationship to its subjects, the possibilities and closures of postcolonial citizenship, the deep hostility and suspicion of successive regimes towards a borderland population, and their performances of loyalty, petition and vigilance in response. It shows how politics was made between peasants and state elites, the nature of violence in the processes of decolonisation, and how the language of truth continues to matter today"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Looking beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary social interactions, The Moral Power of Money investigates the forces of power and morality at play, particularly among the poor. Drawing on fieldwork in a slum of Buenos Aires, Ariel Wilkis argues that money is a critical symbol used to negotiate not only material possessions, but also the political, economic, class, gender, and generational bonds between people. Through vivid accounts of the stark realities of life in Villa Olimpia, Wilkis highlights the interplay of money, morality, and power. Drawing out the theoretical implications of these stories, he proposes a new concept of moral capital based on different kinds, or "pieces," of money. Each chapter covers a different "piece"-money earned from the informal and illegal economies, money lent through family and market relations, money donated with conditional cash transfers, political money that binds politicians and their supporters, sacrificed money offered to the church, and safeguarded money used to support people facing hardships. This book builds an original theory of the moral sociology of money, providing the tools for understanding the role money plays in social life today.

Dies führt dazu, dass die gesamte ghanaische Wirtschaft und damit die nationale Währung Cedi durch lokale Handelspraktiken stabilisiert werden.In Market Money wird der Tamale Central Market ethnographisch erkundet. Durch die Strategien der Händler*innen, die hier fokussiert werden, entsteht ein teilautonomes Finanzsystem, das vor allem die stark abgenutzten Cedi-Scheine (Market Money) repräsentieren.     Abstract: People`s transnational mobilities, their activities to build homes in their countries of residence and their connectivities have resulted in multiplicities of belonging to encountered, imagined and represented communities operating within various political contexts. Migrants and their descendants labor to form and transform relations with their country of origin and of residence. People who see their origins in India but are now living elsewhere are a case in point. They have been establishing worldwide home places, whose growing number and vibrancy invite reconsideration of Indian diasporic communities and contexts in terms of `India(s) beyond India.` Issues of belonging in Indian diasporas include questions of membership not only in the nation of previous and present residence and/or the nation of origin, but also in other communities and networks in political, economic, religious and social realms at local, regional or global levels. Yet, belonging - and especially simultaneous belonging - to various formations is rarely unambiguous. Rather, belonging in all its modes may entail dilemmas that arise from inclusions and exclusions. Bearing in mind such processes, the contributions to this volume endeavor to provide answers to the question of what kinds of difficulties members of Indian communities abroad encounter in connection with their identifications with and participation in specific collectivities. The underlying argument of all the essays collected is that members of Indian diasporas develop strategies to cope with the dilemmas they face in connection with their sense of belonging to particular communities, while they are subjected to specific power relationships. Thus, the volume sheds light on the ways in which dilemmas of belonging are being negotiated in intercultural fields.

    Abstract: "Palma africana represents the latest attempt by anthropologist Michael Taussig to make sense of the threat to life, human and nonhuman, that characterizes the contemporary moment. In Colombia, where Taussig has worked for decades, palm oil plantations are spreading in areas that were once cornucopias of animal, bird, and plant life. Deforestation and habitat loss are the first effects."--Provided by publisher."It is the contemporary elixir from which all manner of being emerges, the metamorphic sublime, an alchemist's dream." So begins Palma Africana, the latest attempt by anthropologist Michael Taussig to make sense of the contemporary moment. But to what elixir does he refer? Palm oil. Saturating everything from potato chips to nail polish, palm oil has made its way into half of the packaged goods in our supermarkets. By 2020, world production will be double what it was in 2000. In Colombia, palm oil plantations are covering over one-time cornucopias of animal, bird, and plant life. Over time, they threaten indigenous livelihoods and give rise to abusive labor conditions and major human rights violations. The list of entwined horrors--climatic, biological, social--is long. But Taussig takes no comfort in our usual labels: "habitat loss," "human rights abuses," "climate change." The shock of these words has passed; nowadays it is all a blur. Hence, Taussig's keen attention to words and writing throughout this work. He takes cues from precursors' ruminations: Roland Barthes's suggestion that trees form an alphabet in which the palm tree is the loveliest; William Burroughs's retort to critics that for him words are alive like animals and don't like to be kept in pages--cut them and the words are let free. Steeped in a lifetime of philosophical and ethnographic exploration, Palma Africana undercuts the banality of the destruction taking place all around us and offers a penetrating vision of the global condition. Richly illustrated and written with experimental verve, this book is Taussig's Tristes Tropiques for the twenty-first century.

    Abstract: Asylum seekers are not welcome in Europe. But why is that the case? For many scholars, the policies have become more restrictive over recent decades because the asylum seekers have changed. This change is often said to be about numbers, methods of travel, and reasons for flight. In short: we are in an age of hypermobility and states cannot cope with such volumes of `others`.This book presents an alternative view, drawing on theoretical insights from Third World Approaches to International Law, post- and decolonial studies, and presenting new research on the context of the British Empire. The text highlights the fact that since the early 1990s, for the first time, the majority of asylum seekers originate from countries outside of Europe, countries which until 30-60 years ago were under colonial rule. Policies which address asylum seekers must, the book argues, be understood not only as part of a global hypermobile present, but within the context of colonial histories.

    Abstract: People`s transnational mobilities, their activities to build homes in their countries of residence and their connectivities have resulted in multiplicities of belonging to encountered, imagined and represented communities operating within various political contexts. Migrants and their descendants labor to form and transform relations with their country of origin and of residence. People who see their origins in India but are now living elsewhere are a case in point. They have been establishing worldwide home places, whose growing number and vibrancy invite reconsideration of Indian diasporic communities and contexts in terms of `India(s) beyond India.` Issues of belonging in Indian diasporas include questions of membership not only in the nation of previous and present residence and/or the nation of origin, but also in other communities and networks in political, economic, religious and social realms at local, regional or global levels. Yet, belonging - and especially simultaneous belonging - to various formations is rarely unambiguous. Rather, belonging in all its modes may entail dilemmas that arise from inclusions and exclusions. Bearing in mind such processes, the contributions to this volume endeavor to provide answers to the question of what kinds of difficulties members of Indian communities abroad encounter in connection with their identifications with and participation in specific collectivities. The underlying argument of all the essays collected is that members of Indian diasporas develop strategies to cope with the dilemmas they face in connection with their sense of belonging to particular communities, while they are subjected to specific power relationships. Thus, the volume sheds light on the ways in which dilemmas of belonging are being negotiated in intercultural fields.

    Abstract: This book documents transformation in twenty rural communities in Ethiopia, that have changed almost beyond recognition, in complex ways with different implications for various people--men and women, adults and youth, rich and poor. The communities have become less rural through urbanisation and more outward-looking, including through labour migration. The local economies have become more diversified, offering opportunities for entrepreneurial individuals and greater participation of women. At the same time inequalities have risen and young people's aspirations have grown with more educational opportunities. However, youth face increased challenges in improving their livelihoods and transitioning to adulthood. The expansion in health care is important, particularly for young women, mothers and babies, though girls still face a range of risks in growing up, and poverty and remoteness affect the wellbeing of mothers and infants. This book will appeal to policymakers, practitioners, donors and academics seeking to understand Ethiopia today through the experiences of the majority of its people who still live beyond the major conurbations; and the ways their lives have evolved over the last twenty years.

    Abstract: In recent years, the growth of a middle class has been a key feature of the 'Africa Rising' narrative. Here, Jason Sumich explores the formation of this middle class in Mozambique, answering questions about the basis of the class system and the social order that gives rise to it. Drawing extensively on his fieldwork, Sumich argues that power and status in dominant party states like Mozambique derives more from the ability to access resources, rather than from direct control of the means of production.
