Abstract: Systems of belonging, including ethnicity, are not static, automatic, or free of contest. Historical contexts shape the ways which we are included in or excluded from specific classifications. Building on an amazing array of sources, David L. Schoenbrun examines groupwork - the imaginative labor that people do to constitute themselves as communities - in an iconic and influential region in East Africa. His study traces the roots of nationhood in the Ganda state over the course of a millennia, demonstrating that the earliest clans were based not on political identity or language but on shared investments, knowledges, and practices.Grounded in Schoenbrun's skillful mastery of historical linguistics and vernacular texts, The Names of the Python supplements and redirects current debates about ethnicity in ex-colonial Africa and beyond. This timely volume carefully distinguishes past from present and shows the many possibilities that still exist for the creative cultural imagination.

Abstract: The bulk of this massive tome, generously illustrated (maps, figures, tables, plates), presents what is known of Dghwede culture in twenty-three varied chapters ranging from the material to the ideational, with emphasis on kinship and ritual. Oral traditions — the main legacy of the Gwoza hills montagnards — are at their core and are subjected to critical analysis. A labour of love and fine scholarship, this is the first extended ethnographic account from this region and will be warmly welcomed by specialists for its broad coverage and inferences and, a generation hence, by Dghwede descendants eager to explore their cultural heritage.

Abstract: The We, whose name means "men who easily forgive," live in the forests along the western border of the Ivory Coast. The family unit plays an important role in We social life. Each is led by a patriarch revered for his wisdom and wealth, who supervises the clan`s life, organizing weddings, settling disputes, and influencing religious life.Long known by other names, (Guere, Wobe, Kran), the We live on either side of the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast and as a result they are considered "peripheral" inhabitants in both countries. Theirs is regarded as a mask culture, as opposed to other societies that have none (such as the Ashanti in Ghana). The bold, striking sculpture on these masks ensured they would be among the first examples of African art to captivate Cubist artists in the West. So it comes as no surprise that Kahnweiler, Picasso`s famous dealer, used to say that the artist owned a Wobe mask and that it was the close analysis of this object that led Picasso to experiment with innovative techniques in his own work. These eye-opening, exuberant, phantasmagorical masks are astonishingly diverse and display a dazzling compositional inventiveness. They clearly also influenced the art of neighbouring peoples, to the extent that, far from being isolated in a remote corner of the jungle, this art has been identified as the keystone, the pivot around which all the art of the area revolves—giving the lie to the notion that the lines drawn on maps by colonisers have any effect on the process of artistic creation. To which should be added a further crucial point: it is no exaggeration to speak of a mask culture, so abundant are they in each village, with a part to play in all community activities (legal, mystical, agricultural . . . ) and a role in all the stages of life. The nature of this dynamic, mobile art is completely different from the art of other peoples, where form suggests meaning and reveals the impact and the type of ceremony it is associated with; in the case of the We masks, form is never an indicator of category. Abstract: This research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and northern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the "Datoga problem," but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.

Abstract: This book presents a long-term study of the activist campaign that contested the Botswana government's much-publicized removal of the San and Bakgalagadi people from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Sapignoli's multiple points of observation and analysis range from rural Botswana to the nation's High Court, and a variety of United Nations agencies in their Headquarters, focusing on rights claimants and officials from NGOs, states and the United Nations as they acted on the grievances of those who had been displaced. In offering a comprehensive discussion of the San people and their claims-making through formal institutions, this book maintains a consistent focus on the increased recourse to law and the everyday experience of those who are asserting their rights in response to the encroachments of the state and the opportunities inherent in new indigenous advocacy networks"--This book presents a long-term study of the activist campaign that contested the Botswana government's much-publicized removal of the San and Bakgalagadi people from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Abstract: West African history is inseparable from the history of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism. According to historical archaeologist François Richard, however, the dominance of this narrative not only colors the range of political discourse about Africa but also occludes many lesser-known--but equally important--experiences of those living in the region. Reluctant Landscapes is an exploration of the making and remaking of political experience and physical landscapes among rural communities in the Siin province of Senegal between the late 1500s and the onset of World War II. By recovering the histories of farmers and commoners who made up African states' demographic core in this period, Richard shows their crucial--but often overlooked--role in the making of Siin history. The book also delves into the fraught relation between the Seereer, a minority ethnic and religious group, and the Senegalese nation-state, with Siin's perceived "primitive" conservatism standing at odds with the country's Islamic modernity. Through a deep engagement with oral, documentary, archaeological, and ethnographic archives, Richard's groundbreaking study revisits the four-hundred-year history of a rural community shunted to the margins of Senegal's national imagination.

Abstract: Bambara, wolof, peul, arabe...

Abstract: A fascinating eyewitness account of the recent history of a West African country: Marjolijn Aalders Grool travelled to the West African Dahomey in March 1975. Thirty months later she left the same country that was then called the "People`s Republic of Benin". During her stay, she recorded a corpus of 37 mythological Voodoo stories. The scholarly results have been published in 2013 and 2014.In her third book, she describes the fieldwork and the welcoming reception in the villages, as well as the political machinations and the ruthless oppression of the Voodoo religion by the Marxist-Leninist regime. But she also writes about the social isolation of the few foreigners who eventually lived there, and how they dealt with it.In 2014 and 2015 she travelled again to Benin, this time to give back the cultural heritage, the Voodoo stories that had been entrusted to her, to the country and its people. What had changed? How did voodoo religion survive the witch hunt? And is the sophisticated art of performing voodoo stories still alive?

Abstract: In Conquest and Construction Mark Dike DeLancey investigates the palace architecture of northern Cameroon, a region that was conquered in the early nineteenth century by primarily semi-nomadic, pastoralist, Muslim, Ful?e forces and incorporated as the largest emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate. Palace architecture is considered first and foremost as political in nature, and therefore as responding not only to the needs and expectations of the conquerors, but also to those of the largely sedentary, agricultural, non-Muslim conquered peoples who constituted the majority population. In the process of reconciling the cultures of these various constituents, new architectural forms and local identities were constructed.

Abstract: In Colonial Survey and Native Landscapes in Rural South Africa, 1850 - 1913, Lindsay Frederick Braun explores the technical processes and struggles surrounding the creation and maintenance of boundaries and spaces in South Africa in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The precision of surveyors and other colonial technicians lent these enterprises an illusion of irreproachable objectivity and authority, even though the reality was far messier. Using a wide range of archival and printed materials from survey departments, repositories, and libraries, the author presents two distinct episodes of struggle over lands and livelihoods, one from the Eastern Cape and one from the former northern Transvaal. These cases expose the contingencies, contests, and negotiations that fundamentally shaped these changing South African landscapes.

Abstract: Offering up-to-date and comprehensive analysis, this title combines empirically-based and analytic chapters. It explains the causes of the escalation in violence, the various actors involved, and the policy challenges faced with regard to conflict management/resolution and the options for peace. The recent escalation in the violent conflict in the Niger Delta has brought the region to the forefront of international energy and security concerns. This book analyses the causes, dynamics and politics underpinning oil-related violence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It focuses on the drivers of the conflict, as well as the ways the crises spawned by the political economy of oil and contradictions within Nigeria's ethnic politics have contributed to the morphing of initially poorly coordinated, largely non-violent protests into a pan-Delta insurgency. Approaching the issue from a number of perspectives, the book offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive analysis available of the varied dimensions of the conflict. Combining empirically-based and analytic chapters, it attempts to explain the causes of the escalation in violence, the various actors, levels and dynamics involved, and the policy challenges faced with regard to conflict management/resolution and the options for peace. It also examines the role of oil as a commodity of global strategic significance, addressing the relationship between oil, energy security and development in the Niger Delta.

Abstract: This book examines the history and contemporary living conditions of Chagossians who were evicted from the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean to make way for a strategic U.S. military base. Initially part of colonial Mauritius, Chagos was integrated into a new colony named the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965. In 1966, Great Britain transferred control of Diego Garcia, the largest Chagos island, to the Americans under a fifty year lease. The expulsions which followed were designed to satisfy the U.S. demand for an unpopulated territory. The Chagossians were thus forced to resettle in Mauritius and the Seychelles, where livelihoods are poor and marginalized. The Chagossians are currently engaged in a campaign seeking right of return to the archipelago and recognition as a people forced to live in diaspora.

Abstract: Since the creation of the Ethiopian empire in the 1880s, political, economic, social and military power has been dominated by the elites of two minority groups. The vast majority of the peoples in Ethiopia have been subjected to the political subjugation, economic marginalization and cultural dehumanization. While the ruling ethnic groups have sought to maintain the status quo, the oppressed majority have been struggling to free themselves from tyrannical rule. As a result, the contemporary Ethiopia is a mass of contradictions and contest revolving around the paradigms of oppression and liberation producing decades of civil wars, violation of human rights, poverty, famine and misery in monumental proportions.Various authors have narrated the reasons that led to the abject Ethiopian condition. But this book is unique because it is an in-depth treatment of the subject covering socio-political history, contemporary political economy, and politics of nationalist struggles. Furthermore, the diverse cultural predisposition, academic training, and scholarly caliber of the contributors make their messages a timely work of immense role and great importance. The book explores the root causes of arrested development. It exposes oppressive mechanisms used by the Ethiopian state to suppress the creative talents of its subjects. It depicts not only the lack of respect for basic human rights in Ethiopia, but also the denial of the people's right to freely determine the governance of their choice and the pace of their socio-economic progress. The contributors to this book passionately believe that the problems facing the majority peoples in Ethiopia are neither inevitable nor insurmountable. As much as it is inspired by the long suffering of the oppressed people, it is informed by the search for solutions. In short, it articulates their yearning for freedom, human dignity, self-determination and democracy. It is a must read for anyone interested in finding a solution for the problems facing the majority of the people in Ethiopia.

Abstract: "Ist das Auswärtige Amt informiert?"

Abstract: This book is a study of the issues of democracy and democratization in Africa, with emphasis on the roles of civil society and the state in the democratic transition. After clarifying the meaning of democracy as a universal principle of governance and the applicability of the concept to Africa, the book examins the major problem facing the democratic transision on the continent as a whole. The book contains four studies on the role of civil society organizations in the struggle for democracy and the expansion of the political space: one each on the women''s strugge for equality in Botswana and state-civil society relations in Uganda, and two, in French, on ther popular struggle for democracy in the former Zaire.More the half of the contributions to the volume are devoted to a critical assessment of the role the state plays in promoting, undermining, or blocking the democratic transition. There are three case studies on South, Africa, four on Nigeria, and one each on Gana and the Portuguese-speaking countries. The book concludes with two studies on democracy and human rights, with the first looking at the issue in a broad historical and international context, and the second focusing on the gender bias of "ombudsman" institutions in Africa.

Abstract: This volume consists of twelve contributions originally presented at the colloquium "Gender and Identity in Africa" held at the University of Bayreuth, Germany in July 1992. The colloquium was intended as a contribution to intercultural women's studies and concentrated on the question of how far women can shape their social lives without having to adhere to rules developed by men in their own interest. The papers dealt with a wide range of topics, such as the roles which women play in religion, politics, trade and as entrepreneurs, their portrayal in oral literature, identification with urban life, and their legal postion in the societies of western, eastern, and southern Africa. Abstract: Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist das Spannungsfeld Identität - Macht - Herrschaft in Afrika. Abstract: This edited collection, written by eleven leading specialists, examines the nineteenth-century commercial transition in West Africa: the ending of the Atlantic slave trade and the development of alternative forms of 'legitimate' trade, mainly in vegetable products. Approaching the subject from an African, rather than a European or American, perspective, the case studies consider the effects of transition on the African societies involved. They offer significant insights into the history of pre-colonial Africa and the slave trade, the origins of European imperialism, and longer-term issues of economic development in Africa.
