    Abstract: Norbert Elias has been described as a great sociologist and over recent years there has been a steady upsurge of interest in his work. Yet despite the fact that he was active for nearly sixty years from the 1920s to the 1960s it was only in the 1980s that English translations of his works became widely available and the importance of his contribution to the sociological endeavour was fully recognised in the English speaking world. This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the key aspects of Elias's work and then applies an Eliasian approach to key topics in contemporary sociology such as race, class, gender, religion, epistemology and nationalism.     Abstract: This book addresses key topics in social theory such as the basic structures of social life, the character of human activity, and the nature of individuality. Drawing on the work of Wittgenstein, the author develops an account of social existence that argues that social practices are the fundamental phenomenon in social life. This approach offers insight into the social formation of individuals, surpassing and critiquing the existing practice theories of Bourdieu, Giddens, Lyotard and Oakeshott. In bringing Wittgenstein's work to bear on issues of social theory the book shows the relevance of his work to a body of thought to which it has never been applied.     Abstract: Why do politicians and civil servants commission research and what use do they make of it in policymaking? The received wisdom is that research contributes to improving government policy. Christina Boswell challenges this view, arguing that policymakers are just as likely to value expert knowledge for two alternative reasons: as a way of lending authority to their preferences; or to signal their capacity to make sound decisions. Boswell develops a compelling new theory of the role of knowledge in policy, showing how policymakers use research to establish authority in contentious and risky areas of policy. She illustrates her argument with an analysis of European immigration policies, charting the ways in which expertise becomes a resource for lending credibility to controversial claims, underpinning high-risk decisions or bolstering the credibility of government agencies.

    Abstract: With the unrelenting unrest in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the Sudan, the plight of refugees has become an increasingly discussed topic in international relations. Why do we have refugees? When did the refugee 'problem' emerge? How can the refugee ever be reconciled with an international system that rests on sovereignty? Looking at three key periods - the inter-war period, the Cold War and the present day - Emma Haddad demonstrates how a specific image has defined the refugee since the international states system arose in its modern form and that refugees have thus been qualitatively the same over the course of history. This historical and normative approach suggests new ways to understand refugees and to formulate responses to them. By examining the issue from an international society perspective, this book highlights how refugees are an inevitable, if unanticipated, result of erecting political borders

How do moments produce monuments, and why are monuments erased from our cultural memory in only a moment? - Taking into account these cultural processes of creating, storing, remembering and forgetting that are omnipresent and have an immense influence on how we perceive artefacts and cultural events, the articles in this collection analyze the phenomenon of cultural production, transmission and reception from various angles, drawing on approaches from both literary and cultural studies.     Abstract: Illegale Migranten sind zur Chiffre von Migration überhaupt geworden. Dabei sind sie kein neues Phänomen: Noch vor den ersten Abkommen zur Gastarbeiterrekrutierung sind Migrantinnen und Migranten in Deutschland ohne Papiere eingereist - mit bedeutsamen Folgen für das bundesdeutsche Migrationsregime, das mit Legalisierungen, Gesetzesverschärfungen oder Anwerbeabkommen reagierte. Mittels staats- und diskurstheoretischer Argumente zeigt dieser Band, wie aus den Konflikten um illegale Migration soziale und politische Kompromisse und damit neue Formen der Regierung von Migration entstehen. Die Konflikte - etwa um die Kosten von Arbeitskraft oder die Grenzen der Staatsbürgerschaft - verändern auch die Migrationsbewegung selbst, die immer neue Formen der klandestinen Migration herausbildet. Die Studie behandelt zudem Probleme der Subjektivierung, etwa die Frage, weshalb die Handlungsmacht der Migranten innerhalb des bestehenden Migrationsregimes zugunsten einer Repräsentation als »Opfer« ausgeblendet wird.

    Abstract: In contemporary global capitalist culture, time-consciousness becomes more important than self-consciousness. In the realm of lived time, the identity of the self opens up to an encounter with otherness. Insights into the ways in which this dynamic unfolds enable one to affirm human temporalities in their potential difference to the temporalities of global capitalism. The book offers an empirical exploration of lived temporalities on markets, in buses and in traditional subsistence in Guatemala, and a theoretical exploration of these through the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and inter-relational approaches within psychoanalysis.

    Abstract: Gestritten wird oft, viel, an unterschiedlichen Orten, in verschiedensten Kontexten. Der Präsenz des Phänomens »Streit« steht allerdings seine negative Bewertung gegenüber. Sie speist sich aus seinem dissoziierenden Charakter, dessen Faktizität die Harmonie- und Stabilitätsorientierung normativer symbolischer Ordnungen immer wieder herausfordert. Das vergesellschaftende Moment des Streits, seine Funktionalität und nicht zuletzt seine Produktivität bleiben oft unbeachtet. Streitkulturen zu analysieren bedeutet, den Streit als eine spezifische Form der Auseinandersetzung in den Blick zu nehmen, seine Regelhaftigkeit, seine jeweils historisch wie sozial variablen Erscheinungsweisen aufzuzeigen. In der interdisziplinären Perspektive der Beiträge zeigt sich der Streit als kulturelle Form der Austragung antagonistischer Positionen in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Es wird eine Annäherung an eine eigenständige kultur- und sozialtheoretische Figur ermöglicht, die mehr ist als lediglich ein Epiphänomen des Konflikts.

    Abstract: Junge muslimische Männer sind die neuen Sündenböcke in den westlichen Gesellschaften - sie werden dämonisiert und sensationalisiert. Das seit dem »11. September« gesteigerte Interesse an muslimisch-migrantischen Geschlechterbeziehungen gilt vornehmlich dem Stereotyp des »aggressiven und patriarchalen Migranten«. Die Frage nach der konkreten Bedeutung von Migration und Religion für die Transformation und (Re-)Konstruktion männlicher Identitäten wird nicht gestellt. Dieser Band schließt die Lücke in der deutschsprachigen Forschung und bringt interdisziplinäre Forschungsergebnisse zu den Schnittstellen von »Migration und Männlichkeit« sowie »Maskulinität und Islam« zusammen.

    Abstract: Im Zuge der Debatten über Islam und Einwanderung rücken auch Aleviten ins Zentrum des öffentlichen Interesses. Als »nicht-orthodoxe« Gruppe stellen sie einen Sonderfall dar und gelten häufig als besonders gut integrierte Muslime. Dies ist nicht zuletzt ein Erfolg der alevitischen Bewegung, die sich seit Ende der 1980er Jahre für die Anerkennung des Alevitentums in Deutschland eingesetzt hat. Gleichzeitig führen die Aleviten selbst eine sehr engagierte Debatte über ihre Identität: Sind Aleviten überhaupt Muslime? Wie lässt sich das Alevitentum in Deutschland leben und vermitteln? Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaftler verschiedener Disziplinen greifen in diesem Band Aspekte der Debatte über das alevitische Selbstverständnis auf und geben einen Überblick über den Diskurs in Deutschland.

    Abstract: »Scheintod« ist ein Neologismus des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts. Er verweist auf ein modernes Todesproblem: Mit ihm wird die Angst des sich »nur noch mit sich selbst identisch« (Luhmann) verstehenden Individuums vor einem Selbstverlust thematisiert, die eng mit der Verzeitlichung der Gesellschaft sowie der anthropologischen Transformation seit der Aufklärung zusammenhängt. Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Tod zu nach Überwindung der christlich-mittelalterlichen Seelenvorstellungen im Zuge der Aufklärung? Die Studie rekonstruiert die wechselseitigen Bezüge zwischen Wissen und Tod, die der Bildung dieses Begriffs zugrunde liegen. Die soziale Reichweite des Scheintodes wird mittels konkurrierender Deutungsmuster und kultureller Praktiken des Umgangs mit Tod und Sterben untersucht, zu denen neben Diskursen aus der Medizin oder Theologie religiöses und überliefertes Wissen zählen.

    Abstract: What constitutes a 'normal' child? Throughout the nineteenth century public health and paediatrics played a leading role in the image and conception of children. By the twentieth century psychology had moved to the forefront, transforming our thinking and understanding. Andre Turmel investigates these transformations both from the perspective of the scientific observation of children (public hygiene, paediatrics, psychology and education) and from a public policy standpoint (child welfare, health policy, education and compulsory schooling). Using detailed historical accounts from Britain, the USA and France, Turmel studies how historical sequential development and statistical reasoning have led to a concept of what constitutes a 'normal' child and resulted in a form of standardization by which we monitor children. He shows how western society has become a child-centred culture and asks whether we continue to base parenting and teaching on a view of children that is no longer appropriate

    Abstract: Der gesellschaftliche Blick auf binationale Paare in Deutschland ist ambivalent: Er bewegt sich zwischen den Polen der Idealisierung (als Symbole einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft) und der Ablehnung (als Symbole für das »Fremdgehen« deutscher Frauen). Doch wie gestalten binationale Paare ihre Paarbiographien? Die vorliegende Studie analysiert Formen biographischen Lernens der Paare und wirft Licht auf die Bedeutung von Konstruktionen »kultureller Differenz« und von Geschlechterbeziehungen. Sie zeigt, dass sich durch die binationale Partnerschaft Möglichkeiten der Realisierung von Lebensentwürfen eröffnen, die herkömmliche Geschlechterbeziehungen herausfordern und erweitern.

Focusing on leaders of the sterilization movement from the 1930's through the turn of the century, this book explores the historic linkages between environment, civil liberties, eugenics, population control, sex education, marriage counseling, and birth control movements in the 20th-century United States. Sterilization has been variously advocated as a medical procedure for defusing the "population bomb," expanding individual rights, liberating women from the fear of pregnancy, strengthening marriage, improving the quality of life of the mentally disabled, or reducing the incidence of hereditary disorders. From an historical standpoint, support for free and unfettered access to sterilization services has aroused opposition in some circles, and was considered a "liberal cause" in post-World War II America.     Abstract: As a world religion Islam is based on a highly abstract and absolute notion of the transcendent, which its followers establish and celebrate - in a seemingly contradictory fashion - at very specific sites: Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, and the vast and complex landscapes of mosques and Muslim saints' shrines around the world. Sacred locality has thus become a paradigm for the relationship between the human and the transcendent, a model for urban planning, regional networks, imaginary spaces, and spiritual hierarchies alike. This importance of saintly places has, however, become increasingly complicated and troubled by reformist currents within Islam, on the one hand, and the emergence of modern archeology and anthropology, on the other. While they have often tended to posit 'the local' in opposition to 'the universal', in this volume islamologists, anthropologists, and sociologists offer new ways of thinking about the local, the place, and the conceptual landscapes and spaces of saints. In this, its eighth volume, the Yearbook for the Sociology of Islam looks at different sites and regions around the Muslim world (notably Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Southeast Asia) not as 'localized' versions of a universal Islam, but as constitutive of one particular outlook of the universalizing order of a world religion.
