Anhand der Produktkultur und Aneignungsgeschichte von Kofferradio, Kassettenrekorder und Walkman sowie dem Handy analysiert dieses Buch die mit Portables eingeübten neuen Formen des Technikgebrauchs, des sozialen Miteinanders und der Mobilität und stellt damit die aktuelle Debatte um eine »mobile Revolution« erstmals in eine historische Perspektive.

    Kurzfassung: Im 20. Jahrhundert, das mit Fernsehen und Digitalisierung zwei neue Medienzeitalter hervorgebracht hat, ist die Bedeutung der Medien unübersehbar geworden. Sie dienen keineswegs nur der neutralen Übermittlung und Aufzeichnung von Inhalten, sondern sie nehmen Einfluss auf das politischen und gesellschaftliche Leben, prägen Wissen und Gedächtnis, sie bestimmen die populäre Kultur und finden ihren Niederschlag in den Künsten. Die Medien sind so seit einigen Jahrzehnten zum Gegenstand intensiver Forschung geworden, deren Grundlagen und Ergebnisse in diesem Handbuch vorgestellt werden. Der Band orientiert im ersten Teil über die verschiedenen Disziplinen der Medienforschung wie Medientheorie, Medienpsychologie, Medienpädagogik, Medienökonomie, Medienrecht u.a. Im dritten Teil wird die Geschichte der Einzelmedien wie Literatur, Film, Hörspiel, Fernsehen, der Digitalmedien u.a. vorgestellt. Ausführliche Personen- und Begriffsregister beschließen den Band.
