    Kurzfassung: "Black Neo-Victoriana is the first book-length study on contemporary re-imaginations of Blackness in the long nineteenth century. Located at the intersections of postcolonial studies, Black studies, and neo-Victorian criticism, this interdisciplinary collection engages with the global trend to reimagine and rewrite Black Victorian subjectivities that have been continually marginalised in both historical and cultural discourses. Contributions cover a range of media, from novels and drama to film, television and material culture, and draw upon cultural formations such as Black fandom, Black dandyism, or steamfunk. The book evidences how neo-Victorian studies benefits from reading re-imaginations of the long nineteenth century vis-à-vis Black epistemologies, which unhinge neo-Victorianism's dominant spatial and temporal axes and reroute them to conceive of the (neo-)Victorian through Blackness"--

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This volume brings together contributions that explore the increasingly important roles that English plays in Asia, including its contribution to economic growth, national imaginaries and creative writing. These are issues that are political in a broad sense, but the diversity of Asian contexts also means that the social, political and cultural ramifications of the spread of English into Asia will have to be understood in relation to the challenges facing specific societies. The chapters in the book collectively illustrate this diversity by focusing on countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. Each country has two contributions devoted to it: one paper provides an overview of the country's language policy and its positioning of English, and another provides a critical discussion of creative expressions involving the use of English.     Kurzfassung: Laura Chrisman's Colonial Discourse and Postcolonial Theory: A Reader was published in 1993. It quickly became a landmark of postcolonial studies. This timely new book offers insights into the field she helped establish. Both polemical and scholarly, Postcolonial contraventions is challenging in its analysis of black Atlantic studies, colonial discourse analysis and postcolonial theory. She provides important new paradigms for understanding imperial literature, Englishness, and black transnationalism.     Kurzfassung: The early modern period was of great significance throughout Europe with respect to its gradual transition from a largely oral to a fundamentally literate society. On the one hand, the spoken word remained of the utmost importance to the dissemination of ideas, the communication of information and the transmission of the cultural repertoire. On the other hand, the proliferation of written documents of all kinds, the development of printing and the spread of popular literacy combined to transform the nature of communication. Studies previous to this have traditionally focussed on individual countries or regions, and emphasised the contradictions between oral and literate culture. The essays in this fascinating collection depart from these approaches in several ways. By examining not only English, but also Scottish and Welsh oral culture, they provide the first pan-British study of the subject. The authors also emphasise the ways in which oral and literate culture continued to compliment and inform each other, rather than focusing exclusively on their incompatibility, or on the 'inevitable' triumph of the written word. The chronological focus, ranging from the sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, with glances ahead to the twentieth, set the problem against a longer chronological span than most other studies, providing a link between early modern and modern oral and literate cultures.     Kurzfassung: Main description: Anhand einer umfangreichen Sammlung englisch- und deutschsprachiger Beispiele werden Mißverständnisse empirisch untersucht. Die Grundlage bildet ein auf der Sprechakttheorie aufbauendes Kommunikationsmodell. Es ermöglicht eine Ursachenanalyse von Mißverständnissen ebenso wie eine Typologie auf Grund verschiedener Aspekte der Äußerungsfunktion, die vom Mißverstehen betroffen sind. Überlegungen anhand benachbarter interaktiver Phänomene wie unbemerktem Mißverstehen und Nichtverstehen führen darüber hinaus zu dem Ergebnis, daß vollständiges Verstehen eher ein soziales Konstrukt als eine interaktive Realität darstellt.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: In this book misunderstandings are analyzed using a pragmatically-oriented modell of communication. The empirical basis is a large corpus of examples from English and German. The theoretical approach makes it possible in many instances to identify the reason why a misunderstanding occurs. A three-level concept of communicative functions, making use of some fundamental concepts of speech act theory, leads to a classification of three major types of misunderstandings. An investigation into the relationship between misunderstandings and phenomena such as nonunderstanding and unnoticed misunderstandings leads to the conclusion that 'total' understanding must be regarded as a social construct rather than as interactive reality.
