    Kurzfassung: "Across the landscape that until 1939 housed most of the world's Jewish population, the closing decade of the 20th century witnessed dramatic upheavals: the overturning of the East European communist governments and the fall of the USSR, accompanied by a major Jewish emigration movement. The legacy of the Jewish presence in those countries, as viewed from today's vantage point, and the ways in which it became enmeshed in the quest by people of the region-Jews and non-Jews alike-to secure their prospects for the future, highlighted fundamental issues about the nature and quality of the politics of memory, national identity, and the continuity and relative stability of regimes in the region. If those questions were important even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, understanding their implications now seems even more crucial. In a field fraught with conflicting narratives, the challenges of social and political reconstruction are primary concerns for peoples and governments. The experts contributing to this volume apply interdisciplinary approaches to analyze and interpret a multiplicity of post-communist social realities and aid our understanding of recent events"--

    Kurzfassung: The most prominent story of 19th century German & French Jewry has focused on Jews' adoption of liberal middle-class values. Joskowicz points to an equally powerful aspect of modern Jewish history: the extent to which German and French Jews sought to become modern by criticising the anti-modern positions of the Catholic Church. From the moment in which Jews began to enter the fray of modern European politics, they found that Catholicism served as a convenient foil that helped them define what it meant to be a good citizen, to practice a respectable religion, and to have a healthy family life.

    Kurzfassung: Ausgehend von der klassischen Annahme Max Webers, wonach Herrschaft im Alltag Verwaltung sei, analysiert der Sammelband Kommunikationsprozesse zwischen Herrschaft, Administration und Administrierten in europäischen Territorien der Frühen Neuzeit. Der verbreiteten Vorstellung, dass diese Kommunikationsprozesse weitgehend von Befehl und Gehorsam bestimmt waren, setzen die in diesem Band versammelten Einzelstudien differenzierte historische Analysen der Konstellationen und Dynamiken des Dreiecksverhältnisses entgegen. Die Beiträge widmen sich den spezifischen Formen und Verfahren der Kommunikation zwischen Landesherrn, Verwaltungen und Untertanen, und befassen sich mit deren sprachlicher Ausgestaltung. Zudem fokussieren mehrere Beiträge den Organisationscharakter von Verwaltungen, um das Verhältnis zwischen herrschaftlichen Initiativen und administrativem Handeln, sowie die Rolle von - nicht selten eigendynamischen - Verwaltungspraktiken zu bestimmen.     Kurzfassung: The significant changes in early modern German marriage practices included many unions that violated some taboo. That taboo could be theological and involve the marriage of monks and nuns, or refer to social misalliances as when commoners and princes (or princesses) wed. Equally transgressive were unions that crossed religious boundaries, such as marriages between Catholics and Protestants, those that violated ethnic or racial barriers, and those that broke kin-related rules. Taking as a point of departure Martin Luther's redefinition of marriage, the contributors to this volume spin out the multiple ways that the Reformers' attempts to simplify and clarify marriage affected education, philosophy, literature, high politics, diplomacy, and law. Ranging from the Reformation, through the ages of confessionalization, to the Enlightenment, Mixed Matches addresses the historical complexity of the socio-cultural institution of marriage.

    Kurzfassung: Zwischen 1961 und 1979 nahmen Dörfer über 40.000 Mal am Wettbewerb »Unser Dorf soll schöner werden« teil. Kein anderes Programm erreichte den ländlichen Raum in dieser Breite und Intensität. Dabei war der Wettbewerb von Anfang an mehr, als ein simpler Blumenschmuckwettbewerb, bei dem es nur darum ging, dass die Dorfbewohner ihre Heimat möglichst schön oder - wie manche Kritiker auch meinten - kitschig ausschmückten. Seit 1961 war der Wettbewerb vor allem ein zentrales Mittel, um die Neuordnung des ländlichen Raumes voranzutreiben und zu gestalten. Dies alles zu einer Zeit, zu der eine Welle der Modernisierung über das Land hinwegging und sich der ländliche Raum in einem Ausmaß veränderte wie seit Jahrhunderten nicht mehr: Der Wettbewerb begleitete und beförderte das Ende einer »bäuerlichen Volkskultur«, die bis in die 60er Jahre hinein das Leben auf dem Lande bestimmt hatte. Gleichzeitig trug er wesentlich zur Etablierung eines modernen, funktional ausdifferenzierten ländlichen Raumes mit bei. Auch abgelegene ländliche Gebiete wurden nun als Wirtschafts-, Wohn- und Erholungsraum in die Bundesrepublik integriert. Um dieses Ziel zu verwirklichen, fanden sich höchst unterschiedliche Experten, Politiker und Funktionäre zusammen. Persönlichkeiten wie Graf Lennart Bernadotte von der Insel Mainau prägten den Wettbewerb ebenso entscheidend wie der NS-Landschaftgestalter Heinrich Wiepking oder der ehemalige Landwirtschaftsminister und Bundespräsident Heinrich Lübke.

    Kurzfassung: This edited collection is a major contribution to the current development of a 'material turn' in the social sciences and humanities.  It does so by exploring new understandings of how power is made up and exercised by examining the role of material infrastructures in the organization of state power and the role of material cultural practices in the organization of colonial forms of governance.  A diverse range of historical examples is drawn on in illustrating these concerns - from the role of territorial engineering projects in seventeenth-century France through the development of the postal system in nineteenth-century Britain to the relations between the state and road-building in contemporary Peru, for example.  The colonial contexts examined are similarly varied, ranging from the role of photographic practices in the constitution of colonial power in India and the measurement of the bodies of the colonized in French colonial practices to the part played by the relations between museums and expeditions in the organization of Australian forms of colonial rule.  These specific concerns are connected to major critical re-examination of the limits of the earlier formulations of cultural materialism and the logic of the 'cultural turn'.The collection brings together a group of key international scholars whose work has played a leading role in debates in and across the fields of history, visual culture studies, anthropology, geography, cultural studies, museum studies, and literary studies.

    Kurzfassung: Modern historiography embraces the notion that time is irreversible, implying that the past should be imagined as something 'absent' or 'distant.' Victims of historical injustice, however, in contrast, often claim that the past got 'stuck' in the present and that it retains a haunting presence. History, Memory, and State-Sponsored Violence is centered around the provocative thesis that the way one deals with historical injustice and the ethics of history is strongly dependent on the way one conceives of historical time; that the concept of time traditionally used by historians is structurally more compatible with the perpetrators' than the victims' point of view. Demonstrating that the claim of victims about the continuing presence of the past should be taken seriously, instead of being treated as merely metaphorical, Berber Bevernage argues that a genuine understanding of the 'irrevocable' past demands a radical break with modern historical discourse and the concept of time. By embedding a profound philosophical reflection on the themes of historical time and historical discourse in a concrete series of case studies, this project transcends the traditional divide between 'empirical' historiography on the one hand and the so called 'theoretical' approaches to history on the other. It also breaks with the conventional 'analytical' philosophy of history that has been dominant during the last decades, raising a series of long-neglected 'big questions' about the historical condition - questions about historical time, the unity of history, and the ontological status of present and past -programmatically pleading for a new historical ethics.

The family is not a "natural" phenomenon but an institution with a dynamic history stretching 10,000 years into the past. Mary Jo Maynes and Ann Waltner tell the story of this fundamental unit from the beginnings of domestication and human settlement. They consider the codification of rules governing marriage in societies around the ancient world, the changing conceptions of family wrought by the heightened pace of colonialism and globalization in the modern world, and how state policies shape families today. The authors illustrate ways in which differences in gender and generation have affected family relations over the millennia. Cooperation between family members--by birth or marriage--has driven expansions of power and fusions of culture in times and places as different as ancient Mesopotamia, where kings' daughters became priestesses who mediated among the various cultures and religions of their fathers' kingdom, and sixteenth-century Mexico, in which alliances between Spanish men and indigenous women variously allowed for consolidation of colonial power or empowered resistance to colonial rule. But family discord has also driven - and been driven by - historical events such as China's 1919 May Fourth Movement, in which young people seeking an end to patriarchal authority were key participants. Maynes's and Waltner's view of the family as a force of history brings to light processes of human development and patterns of social life and allows for new insights into the human past and present.

Nearly all political powers in the region based their rule on the management and control of natural resources, and nearly all individuals were in constant communion with the natural world. To grasp how these multiple histories were central to the pasts of the Middle East and North Africa, the chapters in this book evidence the power of environmental history to open up new avenues of scholarly inquiry. In dieser Lage erhält die Frage nach ihren historischen Entstehungs- und Entwicklungsbedingungen neue Brisanz. Diese Studie beschreibt ihr Aufkommen im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Bisher wurde die Kulturkritik hauptsächlich als theoretisches Aussagegeflecht gedeutet, das anhand einer Reihe kanonischer Dichter und Denker skizziert wurde. Theo Jung fasst sie stattdessen als Diskurs auf. In vier thematischen Kapiteln wird dieser Diskurs in zeitgenössischen Debatten über Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft, Sprache und Wissen verortet.     Kurzfassung: At the turn of the century, Sigmund Freud's investigation of the mind represented a particular journey into mental illness, but it was not the only exploration of this 'territory' in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Sanatoriums were the new tourism destinations, psychiatrists were collecting art works produced by patients and writers were developing innovative literary techniques to convey a character's interior life. This collection of essays uses the framework of journeys in order to highlight the diverse artistic, cultural and medical responses to a peculiarly Viennese anxiety about the madness of modern times. The travellers of these journeys vary from patients to doctors, artists to writers, architects to composers and royalty to tourists; in engaging with their histories, the contributors reveal the different ways in which madness was experienced and represented in 'Vienna 1900'.
