Abstract: "Epidemics have constituted a problem for humanity throughout history because they not only affect the individuals they infect, but the entire society in many ways. In fact, the plague epidemic, which started in 1347 and called the Black Death, caused the death of millions of people and it became the biggest fear of the society by deeply affecting the society in a psychological way. Black Death has been the greatest threat for humanity, causing the death of about 40% of European population. As a result the worlds' social structure has changed completely. Even after these events were resolved, its impact on people continued for a long period of time. Before and after the epidemic, the transition from grain to livestock, from economic consumption to luxury consumption, especially with regards to food consumption in Europe, and the food prescriptions used to prevent the epidemic underline the importance of gastronomy for humanity even in this tragic period"--

Abstract: "This book examines the production of poverty in England since the 12th century. The empirical analysis is rooted in the dynamics of capitalism, from its origins in the long transition from feudalism, through mercantile capitalism and colonialism and the emergence of industrial capitalism, to the brief post-war welfare state and its erosion under neoliberal capitalism. The book is unique in its focus on, and empirical description of, the production of poverty. The central argument is that poverty is an inevitable consequence of capitalism. In its search for profits capitalism expands, adapts and innovates, producing not only commodities and wealth but also, and necessarily, poverty. The persistent presence yet constantly changing character of poverty is demonstrated empirically and linked conceptually to the dynamics of capitalism. With the partial but important exception of the 1945-51 Labour governments, and to a lesser extent the 1906-1914 Liberal governments, there has never been a serious attempt to solve poverty. Efforts have long been directed at managing and controlling the poor, often via various forms of charity, to prevent them from starving or rebelling; punishing them for being poor; and forcing them into the lower reaches of the labour market where they remain poor. Any real solution, the book concludes, would require that the logic of capitalism be disrupted, with a dramatic redistribution of the profits it produces. While possible in theory, this appears as unlikely today as in centuries past, a conclusion that follows from the book's conceptual and empirical analysis."--

Abstract: Inequality: A Contemporary Approach to Race, Class, and Gender offers a comprehensive introduction to the topics animating current sociological research focused on inequality. Contemporary, engaging, and research-oriented, it is the ideal text to help undergraduate students master the basic concepts in inequality research and gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which race, class, and gender interact with systems of social stratification. Following an introduction to theories and research methods used in the field, the authors apply these concepts to areas that define inequality research, including social mobility, education, gender, race, and culture. The authors include up-to-date quantitative evidence throughout. The text concludes by examining policies that have facilitated inequality and reviewing the social movements that in turn seek to reshape those structures. Though primarily focused on the United States, it includes a chapter on stratification across the globe and draws on cross-national comparisons throughout.

Abstract: Wie beeinflussen gesellschaftliche Faktoren die psychische Gesundheit?

Abstract: Each year, millions of people die from poverty-related causes. In this groundbreaking and thought-provoking book, Gwilym David Blunt argues that the only people who will end this injustice are its victims, and that the global poor have the right to resist the causes of poverty. He explores how the right of resistance is used to reframe urgent political questions: is illegal immigration a form of resistance? Can transnational social movements, such as the indigenous rights movement, provide the foundations for civil resistance to global poverty? If peaceful resistance fails, is armed struggle justified? Do people living in affluent states have a responsibility to help even if it requires them to break the law? Giving clear historical examples and engaging with fields including philosophy, international law, history, and international political studies, this volume addresses real-world issues from terrorism to activism. It will be important for anyone interested in applied philosophy and global injustice.

Abstract: While the world has seen a decline in absolute poverty, it has also seen a simultaneous rise in economic inequality. This is the case in all of the major economies as well as in emerging ones, including South Africa. Is there a South African explanation of poverty and inequality that is distinctive and different from an explanation of poverty and inequality that would be used in other contexts and countries? What are the familiar constants that characterise the interdependence of this ubiquitous pairing? How can the discussion on poverty and inequality be taken forward? Is wealth taxation a viable instrument to reduce wealth inequality in South Africa? In Poverty and Inequality: Diagnosis, Prognosis and Responses, the authors explore these and many others gritty questions as they analyse the complexity of poverty and inequality beyond an over-determination of the concepts by the economic or the wealth index in South Africa. -- Publisher's description

Abstract: "Stereotypes of economically marginalized black and brown youth focus on drugs, gangs, violence, and teen parenthood. Families, schools, nonprofit organizations, and institutions in poor urban neighborhoods emphasize preventing such "risk behaviors." In The Making of a Teenage Service Class, Ranita Ray uncovers the pernicious consequences of concentrating on risk behaviors as key to targeting poverty. Having spent three years among sixteen black and Latina/o youth, Ray shares their stories of trying to beat the odds of living in poverty. Their struggles of hunger, homelessness, and untreated illnesses are juxtaposed with the perseverance of completing homework, finding jobs, and spending long hours traveling from work to school to home. By focusing on the lives of youth who largely avoid drugs, gangs, violence, and teen parenthood, the book challenges the idea that targeting these "risk behaviors" is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Ray compellingly demonstrates how the disproportionate emphasis on risk behaviors reinforces class and race hierarchies and diverts resources that could support marginalized youth's basic necessities and educational and occupational goals."...Provided by publisher

Abstract: Why are so many types of inequality suddenly increasing? Should we be worried that we're moving into a "second gilded age" with unprecedented levels of income inequality? In this new collection, David B. Grusky and Jasmine Hill present readings that lay bare the main changes in the social and economic landscape, what's driving these changes, and what might be done to reverse them. This reader delivers the latest and most influential contributions on economic inequality, social mobility, educational inequality, racial and ethnic relations, and gender inequality. The contributions span many fields and are authored by such top scholars as Emmanuel Saez (economist, UC Berkeley), Kathryn Edin (sociologist, Johns Hopkins), Raj Chetty (economist, Stanford), Florencia Torche (sociologist, NYU), Thomas Piety (economist, EHESS), and Lucien Bebchuk (law, Harvard). The readings are thematically organized, and each section begins with an introduction from Grusky and Hill that place the selections within a broader context. The pieces are expertly excerpted, allowing readers to quickly understand the main forces at work, the debates still in play, and what's still unknown. The resulting collection is a pitch-perfect introduction for undergraduates or anyone interested in learning why we're entering a new era of inequality and what can be done to change the tide. --

Abstract: "Mainstream media like the New York Times and The Economist have recently posed the question: Why don't the poor rise up?, uneasily amazed that capitalism hasn't met with greater resistance. In the context of unparalleled global wealth disparity, ecological catastrophe, and myriad forms of structural oppression, this vibrant collection offers a reassessment of contemporary obstacles to mass mobilization, as well as examples from around the world of poor people overcoming those obstacles in inspiring and instructive new ways. With contributions from Idle No More organizer Alex Wilson, noted Italian autonomist Franco 'Bifo' Berardi, Cooperation Jackson organizer Kali Akuno, Cape Town-based anarchists Aragorn Eloff and Anna Selmeczi, and sixteen other scholars and activists from around the world, including a Foreword by Affiong Limene Affiong, Nigerian co-founder of Moyo wa Taifa, a Pan-Afrikan Women's Solidarity Network, Why Don't the Poor Rise Up? presents a truly global range of perspectives that explore the question of revolution, its objective and subjective prerequisites, and its increasing likelihood in our time" -- Provided by publisher

Abstract: The News Untold offers an important new perspective on media narratives about poverty in Appalachia. It focuses on how small-town reporters and editors in some of the region's poorest communities decide what aspects of poverty are news, how their audiences interpret those decisions, and how those two related processes help shape understandings of economic need and local social responsibility. Focusing on pattterns of both media creation and consumption, it shows how a lack of constructive news coverage of economic need can make it harder for the poor to voice their concerns. -- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "The Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region has the undesirable distinction of being the world's most violent region, with 24.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The magnitude of the problem is staggering and persistent. Of the top 50 most violent cities in the world, 42 are in LAC. In 2010 alone, 142,302 people in LAC fell victim to homicide, representing 390 homicides per day and 4.06 homicides every 15 minutes. Crime disproportionately affects young men aged 20 to 24, whose homicide rate of 92 per 100,000 nearly quadruples that of the region. The focus of Crime Prevention in Latin America and the Caribbean is to identify policy interventions that, whether by design or indirect effect, have been shown to affect antisocial behavior early in life and patterns of criminal offending in youth and adults. Particular attention is devoted to recent studies that rigorously establish a causal link between the interventions in question and outcomes. This publication adopts a lifecycle perspective and argues that as individuals progress through different stages of the lifecycle, not only do different sets of risk factors arise and take more prominence, but their interactions and interdependencies shape human behavior. These interactions and the relative importance of different sets of risk factors identify relevant margins that can effectively be targeted by prevention policies, not only early in life, but throughout the lifecycle. Indeed prevention can never start too early, nor start too late, nor be too comprehensive."--Publisher's description

Abstract: This book analyses the discourse generated by pundits, politicians, and artists to examine how poverty and the income gap is framed through specific modes of representation. Set against the dichotomy of the structural narrative of poverty and the opportunity narrative, Lemke's modified concept of precarity reveals new insights into the American situation as well as into the textuality of contemporary demands for equity. Her acute study of a vast range of artistic and journalistic texts brings attention to a mode of representation that is itself precarious, both in the modern and etymological sense, denoting both insecurity and entreaty. With the keen eye of a cultural studies scholar her innovative book makes a necessary contribution to academic and popular critiques of the social effects of neoliberal capitalism

Abstract: Wie entsteht kooperative Praxis in lokalen Organisationen? Abstract: This research aims to analyze how the access to primary goods impacts on the quality of life of the inhabitants of a city; taking as a case study the city of Bogotá D.C., and employing the method of Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) designed by Sabina Alkire and Maria Emma Santos (Oxford, July 2010), which was adapted for Colombia by the National Department of Planning as a methodology. The research text is quantitative and was elaborated using secondary data from the MPI, developed by the National Planning Department (DNP) for the city of Bogotá, in 2003, 2007 and 2011. Additionally, the author used other sources, which complemented the information. The results found that Bogota, in particular since the second half of the 20th century, underwent the promotion and development of a series of public politics by the local government aimed at ensuring access to all residents to a series of basic goods, which allowed a gradual improvement in the quality of life of all citizens. However, the research also showed, that there is still a high accumulation of wealth

Abstract: ""One of the most brilliant, articulate, and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation."--Michael Eric DysonTim Wise is one of America's most prolific public intellectuals. His critically acclaimed books, high-profile media interviews, and year-round speaking schedule have established him as a leading voice for racial equity. In Under the Affluence, Wise builds on his fierce critique of racial privilege to discuss a related issue: class disparity and a culture of cruelty that demonizes those in need.As Wise demonstrates, there was a time when the hardship of fellow Americans stirred feelings of sympathy, civic responsibility, and direct support for policies meant to alleviate poverty. But today, mainstream discourse increasingly blames low-income folks for their own situation, and the notion of an intractable "culture of poverty" has pushed our country in an especially ugly direction. Wise shows how the wealthy elite have commandeered discussions about class, moving the nation toward scorn and disengagement from the marginalized. With clarity and precision, Wise not only documents growing contempt for the nation's have-nots, but also explores the underlying forces that perpetuate it. In doing so, he demonstrates how classism, racism, and sexism are inextricably linked, and how popular culture contributes to a deepening indifference to those who are struggling. Finally, Wise shows that far from a culture of poverty, it is the culture of affluence and power that deserves the blame for America's simmering economic and social crises.Tim Wise is the author of many books, including Dear White America and Colorblind"--
Abstract: "In this provocative critique of class and power in America, renowned anti-racist Tim Wise expands his well-developed analysis of privilege rooted in whiteness to include social domination wielded by the wealthy few. Tracing how sympathy for the underlcass, abundant during the Depression, has been erased, Wise counters the contemporary portrayal of the poor as riff-raff and the rich as celebrities"--

Abstract: The inclusion debate has become significantly more popular since the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force in Germany in 2009. The image of society often endorsed here is a remarkably dichotomous one, which has an »inside« and an »outside«. Inclusion is thus ascribed the character of a »holy project«, intended to provide people with disabilities admission into society. But there is no exclusion from society. However, there are massive exclusion processes within society. Getting rid of these processes would mean transforming society so that its focus on gainful employment and the standardizations of performance oriented educational institutions can be relinquished. Uwe Becker comprehensively analyzes the dynamics of exclusion endured by people in educational institutions, in unemployment and poverty - accompanied by political defamation. He calls for a correction of the economically geared gainful employment logic of society, without which inclusion threatens to become a disaster for people with disabilities, their relatives, educators, and all good-willed actors of this project

Abstract: This scientific reader follows the tracks of transnational living environments. In a fresh way, the authors connect classical and literary modes of scientific description: Through the example of migrants in Germany, who have to get by on tight financial resources, this volume looks at different facets of their everyday life as well as challenges and practices that transcend national borders. The suspenseful and informative topics lie at the intersections of (social) pedagogy, sociology, cultural anthropology, ethnology, and psychology.

Abstract: Climate change is the main challenge facing developed countries in the twenty-first century. To what extent does this agenda converge with issues of poverty and social exclusion? Climate change and poverty offers a timely new perspective on the `ecosocial` understanding of the causes and symptoms of, and solutions to, poverty and applies this to recent developments across a number of areas, including fuel poverty, food poverty, housing, transport and air pollution. Unlike any other publication, the book therefore establishes a new agenda for both environmental and social policies which has cross-national relevance. It will appeal to students in social policy, public policy, applied social studies and politics and will also be of interest to those studying international development, economics and geography

Abstract: "A Portrait of America describes our nation's changing population and examines some of its most pressing contemporary challenges, ranging from poverty and economic inequality to racial tensions and health disparities, through a demographic lens. Specifically, chapters cover the following topics: America's historical demographic growth; the American family today; gender inequality; economic well being; immigration and diversity; racial and ethnic inequality; internal migration and residential segregation; and finally health and mortality. The discussion of these topics is informed by several sources, including an examination of household survey data (such as from the U.S. Current Population Survey), as well as syntheses of existing published material, both quantitative and ethnographic. The book discusses current issues and controversies around each theme to highlight their role in everyday debates taking place in Congress, media, and in American living rooms. All the chapters include some historical background, as well as a discussion of how patterns and trends in the United States compare to those in other peer countries"--

Abstract: Why are some nations rich and others poor? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of the right policies? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Based on fifteen years of original research, Acemoglu and Robinson marshall historical evidence from the Roman Empire to the Soviet Union, from Korea to Africa, to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? Is America moving from a virtuous circle, in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted, to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? This book will change the way you look at--and understand--the world.--From American publisher description

Abstract: Preface: Why Egyptians filled Tahrir Square to bring down Hosni Mubarak and what it means for our understanding of the causes of prosperity and poverty -- So close and yet so different : Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, have the same people, culture, and geography. Why is one rich and one poor? -- Theories that don't work : poor countries are poor not because of their geographies or cultures, or because their leaders do not know which policies will enrich their citizens -- The making of prosperity and poverty : how prosperity and poverty are determined by the incentives created by institutions, and how politics determines what institutions a nation has -- Small differences and critical junctures: the weight of history : how institutions change through political conflict and how the past shapes the present -- "I've seen the future, and it works" : growth under extractive institutions : what Stalin, King Shyaam, the Neolithic Revolution, and the Maya city-states all had in common and how this explains why China's current economic growth cannot last -- Drifting apart : how institutions evolve over time, often slowly drifting apart -- The turning point : how a political revolution in 1688 changed institutions in England and led to the Industrial Revolution -- Not on our turf : barriers to development : why the politically powerful in many nations opposed the Industrial Revolution -- Reversing development : how European colonialism impoverished large parts of the world -- The diffusion of prosperity : how some parts of the world took different paths to prosperity from that of Britain -- The virtuous circle : how institutions that encourage prosperity create positive feedback loops that prevent the efforts by elites to undermine them -- The vicious circle : how institutions that create poverty generate negative feedback loops and endure -- Why nations fail today : institutions, institutions, institutions -- Breaking the mold : how a few countries changed their economic trajectory by changing their institutions -- Understanding prosperity and poverty : how the world could have been different and how understanding this can explain why most attempts to combat poverty have failed

Abstract: This is the first book that documents poverty systematically for the world's indigenous peoples in developing regions in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The volume compiles results for roughly 85 percent of the world's indigenous peoples. It draws on nationally representative data to compare trends in countries' poverty rates and other social indicators with those for indigenous sub-populations and provides comparable data for a wide range of countries all over the world. It estimates global poverty numbers and analyzes other important development indicators, such as schooling, health and social protection. Provocatively, the results show a marked difference in results across regions, with rapid poverty reduction among indigenous (and non-indigenous) populations in Asia contrasting with relative stagnation - and in some cases falling back, Äì in Latin America and Africa

Abstract: Income inequality is an increasingly pressing issue in the United States and around the world. This book explores five critical issues to introduce some of the key moral and empirical questions about income, gender, and racial inequality: Do we have a moral obligation to eliminate poverty? Is inequality a necessary evil that's the best way available to motivate economic action and increase total output? Can we retain a meaningful democracy even when extreme inequality allows the rich to purchase political privilege? Is the recent stalling out of long-term declines in gender inequality a historic reversal that presages a new gender order? How are racial and ethnic inequalities likely to evolve as minority populations grow ever larger, as intermarriage increases, and as new forms of immigration unfold? Leading public intellectuals debate these questions in a no-holds-barred exploration of our New Gilded Age
