Abstract: In Don't Take It Personally, Eviatar Zerubavel comprehensively addresses the fundamental distinction between the specific and generic visions of personhood. While the former focuses on specifically "who" individuals are, as embodied by their driver's license and signature, the latter vision concerns itself with "what" they are, as interchangeable members of particular social roles or groups. Over the course of the book, Zerubavel articulates the fundamental features and underlying logic of impersonality and considers what is gained and what is lost by impersonalizing so much of modern social life.

Abstract: To bring awareness to the revolutionary international impact of #MeToo, Iqra Shagufta Cheema brings together contributions from scholars and scholar activists that look at specific iterations of the #MeToo movement across multiple communities, cultures, and countries in the global south. Going beyond gender, the book considers the intersectional assemblage of location, history, religion, ethnicity, race, class, and neoliberal globalization that inform #MeToo and its place in local and transnational feminisms. By doing so, The Other #MeToos highlights the adaptation, translation, and impact of #MeToo in non-Western, postcolonial, minoritized, and othered locales to explore its wider scope and possibilities.

Abstract: We are all immersed in a sea of social norms, but they are sometimes tricky to observe with any clarity. They are often invisible to us and emerge only when they are not observed. Social norms are important to understand because they are both limiting of our freedom, such as gendered and racialized norms, and at the same time the very conditions of our agency. Social Goodness presents an original theory of the normativity or normative "oomph" of social role norms by developing an artisanal model for human social normativity. The artisanal model for social role normativity has resources to explain both the "stickiness" or persistence of social norms, and our ability to criticize existing norms and to engage in normative self-creation--to create new normative selves.

Abstract: Work on Women is the French Enlightenment's most in-depth feminist analysis of inequality--and its most neglected one. In it, Louise Dupin, also known as Madame Dupin (1706-1799), reveals the sexist bias ("masculine vanity") that informs the knowledge and institutions that shape women's lives and argues that the subjection of women is a modern phenomenon, based on an illegitimate, abusive marriage contract. This is the first-ever edition of selected translations of Dupin's massive project, developed from manuscript drafts. Robust introductions to the text contextualize Dupin's working methods--including the role of her secretary, Jean-Jacques Rousseau-and emphasize the importance of feminist thought to the development of moral and political philosophy.

Abstract: In Terms of Exclusion, Zein Murib looks at the LGBT community in the US as it formed into an identity-based social and political group. Drawing on an extensive archive of movement documents and publications, Murib argues that the strategic use of "rightful citizenship claims," or the assertion that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender people are owed rights as citizens, created opportunities for the recognition of white, gender-normative, monogamously partnered gay men and lesbians at the expense of other community members. Terms of Exclusion shows that within-group marginalization is not an accident of political expediency or due to relatively fewer resources, but rather a discursive strategy employed by political actors to make a group palatable to lawmakers and the general public.

Abstract: Against High-Caste Polygamy offers a complete, annotated translation of Ishvarchandra Vidyasagar's influential social-reform tract from 1871. Crafted by one of the nineteenth century's most prominent voices for social change, Against High-Caste Polygamy demonstrates Vidyasagar's ability to call upon the classical discourse and argumentation of the Sanskrit legal tradition while engaging the norms of modern historical and social criticism. In this work, Vidyasagar utilizes both a kind of "imaginative sociology" geared at capturing the suffering of Kulin women and a kind of proto-statistical analysis aimed at opening the eyes of readers to the extent and ramifications of polygamous practices that left Hindu women ostracized, neglected, and abused.

Abstract: Suzy Kim excavates the transnational linkages between women of North Korea and a worldwide women's movement. Women of Asia, especially those espousing communism, are often portrayed as victims or pawns of a patriarchal Confucian state. Kim undercuts this standard analysis through detailed archival work in the international women's press, and finds that North Korean women asserted themselves in unexpected places from the late 1940s - just before the official beginning of the Korean War - to 1975, the year designated by the UN as International Women's Year. By centering North Korea and the 'East,' she defies convention to offer a new genealogy of the global women's movement.

Abstract: In The Subversive Seventies, Michael Hardt sets out to show that popular understandings of the political movements of the seventies--often seen as fractious, violent, and largely unsuccessful--are not just inaccurate, but foreclose valuable lessons for the political struggles of today. Looking at a wide range of movements around the globe during the 1970s, from the United States, to Guinea Bissau, South Korea, Chile, Turkey, and Italy, Hardt argues that the movements of the 1970s identified and attempted to resolve the political problems that still face contemporary radical political thought and action.

Abstract: In What Should We Do?, Peter Levine explores how to organize individuals to act in concert, how to talk and think well about contentious matters, and how to address exclusion. In the broadest available theory of civic engagement and civic life, he analyzes the work of major thinkers, including Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Jürgen Habermas, and Elinor Ostrom. He also provides many practical examples of successful civic action and principles that are useful for real-world civic action.

Abstract: Multiculturalism has been subject to backlashes across democratic states. These voices argue that after years of accommodation, minorities have failed to integrate and ought to be encouraged more forcefully to abandon norms and values that are in tension with those of their broader society. In this context, 'Debating Multiculturalism' brings together two prominent scholars of the political theory of multiculturalism. Both agree with the need for minority accommodation in liberal democracies, but disagree on the pathway forward.

Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Digital Media Sociology is an indispensable resource for students and scholars interested in understanding how new information and communications technologies shape social life. Chapters written by experts from around the world explore the role digital media play in numerous contexts including the intimate and personal elements of social life, such as our identities and closest relationships, as well as in larger social phenomena, such as racial inequality, labor markets, education, and war. This handbook is ideal for classroom use and library acquisition, as each stand-alone chapter--whether on dating apps or disinformation--offers accessible and succinct overviews of what research has shown thus far and what questions remain unanswered.

Abstract: People in danger have received protection in communities beyond their own from the earliest times of recorded history. The causes - war, conflict, persecution, natural disasters and climate change - are as familiar to readers of the news as to students of the past. It is 70 years since nations in the wake of world war drew up the landmark 1951 Refugee Convention. To mark this milestone, The State of the World's Forcibly Displaced traces the historic path that led to that definitive moment. It shows how history was made, by taking the centuries-old ideals of safety and solutions for refugees, to global practice. The book maps the progress encountered on the journey started by the Convention, during which the principle of international protection has reached a much broader group of people than the founders could have envisaged in the 1950s. It examines international responses to forced displacement within borders as well as beyond them, and the protection principles that apply to both. It reviews where they have been used with consistency and success, and where they have not. At times, the strength and resolve of the international community seems strong, yet solutions and meaningful solidarity are often elusive. Understanding why - at this important anniversary - is all the more crucial as the world faces unprecedented forced flight. Most is experienced in in low and middle income countries, and persists for generations. Everywhere, an effective response depends on the commitment to international cooperation set down by the Convention: a vision often compromised by efforts to minimise responsibilities. There is growing recognition that doing better is global imperative. Humanitarian and development action has the potential to be transformational, especially when grounded in the local context. The State of the World's Forcibly Displaced examines how and where investment in education, health and economic inclusion has improved lives and opportunities both for forcibly displaced persons and their hosts. In 2018, the international community reached a Global Compact on Refugees for more equitable and substantiable responses. It is receiving deeper support. The State of the World's Forcibly Displaced looks at whether that is enough for what could - and should - help define the next 70 years

Abstract: In this book, Lori Latrice Martin demonstrates how racial realism is a key concept for understanding why and how black people continue to live between a cycle of optimism and disappointment in the United States. Central to her argument is Derrick Bell’s work on racial realism, who argued that the subordination of black people in America is permanent. Racial Realism includes historical topics, such as Reconstruction, race in the 20th century, and recent events like #BlackLivesMatter, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the killing of George Floyd. As the author lays out, at various times in American history, black people felt a sense of hopefulness and optimism that America would finally extend treasured American values to them only to find themselves marginalized. History shows that black people have had their expectations raised so many times only to find themselves deeply disappointed.

Abstract: This book explores the interaction between three key aspects of everyday life-language, writing, and mobility -with particular focus on their effects on language contact. While the book adopts an established view of language and society that is in keeping with the sociolinguistic paradigm developed in recent decades, it differs from earlier studies in that it assigns writing a central position. Sociolinguistics has long concentrated primarily on speech, but Florian Coulmas shows in this volume that the social importance of writing should not be disregarded: it is the most consequential technology ever invented; it suggests stability; and it defines borders. Linguistic studies have often emphasized that writing is external to language, but thediscipline nevertheless owes its analytic categories to writing. Finally, the digital revolution has fundamentally changed communication patterns, transforming the social functions of writing and consequently also of language

Abstract: More people today consume news via Facebook and Google than from any news organization in history. As a consequence, the technology companies behind them exercise new, distinct forms of platform power. In 'The Power of Platforms', Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Sarah Anne Ganter draw on original interviews and other qualitative evidence from the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to trace the development of the relationships between platforms and news publishers. They analyze how technology companies exercise platform power, how news organizations have responded, and unfold the implications for news and our societies more broadly.

Abstract: How should we 'fix' digital technologies to support democracy instead of undermining it? In 'Designing for Democracy', Jennifer Forestal argues that accurately evaluating the democratic potential of digital spaces means studying how the built environment - a primary component of our 'modern public square' - structures our activity, shapes our attitudes, and supports the kinds of relationships and behaviours democracy requires. Drawing from a wide range of disciplines, she argues that 'democratic spaces' must be designed with three environmental characteristics that, taken together, afford users the ability to engage in fundamental civic practices.

Abstract: This book is a philosophical defense of anger at racial injustice. It shows that this type of anger--what author Myisha Cherry calls Lordean rage, honoring Audre Lorde--can inspire us to change the world. For that reason, we should seek to cultivate it, rather than push it down. Crossing the terrain of moral psychology, philosophy, and current affairs, the book shows how anger at racism is an appropriate and even necessary way of valuing others, how anger can motivate those who are outraged to engage in productive action, and how anger strengthens us to become the heroes that we have been waiting for. Beyond laying out the theory behind her case for rage, Cherry shows racially marginalized people and their allies how to better manage and channel anti-racist anger in order to affect lasting, long-awaited change.

Abstract: In 1955, the Soviet Union became the first country in the world to re-legalize abortion on the principle of women's rights to abortion. How could this happen in Stalinist society which prohibited feminist movements? Replacing the Dead finds an answer in previously secret archives that document the difficult decade after World War II, which killed 27 million Soviet citizens and the government's policy to increase fertility by promoting out-of-wedlock births. The result was an abortion battle between women, government, and Soviet legal and medical professionals that has continued for decades.

Abstract: Vulnerability is a fundamental aspect of existence, giving rise to the need for care in various forms. Yet we are not all vulnerable in the same way, and not all vulnerabilities are equally recognised or cared for. This transdisciplinary volume considers how vulnerability and care are shaped by relations of power within contemporary contexts of war, development, environmental degradation, sexual violence, aging populations and economic precarity. It proposes that care for vulnerable populations or individuals is inseparable from other political processes of recognition, welfare, healthcare and security, whilst also exploring vulnerability as a shared, generative condition that makes caring possible. Ethnographic and narrative accounts of vulnerable life and caring relations in various geographical regions - including Japan, Uganda, Micronesia, Iraq, Mexico, the UK and the US - are interspersed with perspectives from philosophy, International Relations, social and cultural theory, and more, resulting in a compelling series of intellectual exchanges, creative frictions and provocative insights.

Abstract: "Technocratic appeals to expertise and populist invocations of 'the people' have become the central building blocks of political competition in established democracies. This development is best understood as the emergence of technopopulism-a new political field that is pushing aside the traditional struggle between left and right. Political movements and actors-such as Italy's Five Star Movement and En Marche! in France-combine these technocratic and populist appeals in a variety of ways, as do more established parties that are adapting to the forces and pressures of this new political field. In this first book-length treatment of the phenomenon of technopopulism, the authors provide both a conceptual treatment of it as a new political field and explore empirically technopopulism by focusing on British, French, and Italian politics. The book provides a detailed historical account of the formation of the ideological political field and the emergence since the 1990s of the technopopulist political field. The book considers the consequences of technopopulism for representative democracy and what remedies might exist to what the authors view as the rise of an unmediated form of political competition, one that challenges some of the core values of modern democracy"--

Abstract: International migration has become a salient concern in global politics but there is also significant variation in governance responses. By focusing on four key world regions - Europe, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia - this book explores the underlying factors that shape governance responses. Rather than focusing on the more visible outputs or outcomes of governance processes such as laws and policies, this book opens the 'black box' of migration governance to reveal how understandings and representations of the causes and effects of migration held by key governance actors in these four regions have powerful effects, not only on governance outcomes, but more broadly on the prospects for global migration governance.

Abstract: "To survive, let alone flourish, we need to be sure of - securely tied to - at least one other person. We also need to be sure of our general acceptance within the wider social world. This book explores the normative implications of taking our core social needs seriously. Chapter 1 sketches out what those needs are, and Chapter 2 shows that they ground a fundamental, but largely neglected human right against social deprivation. Chapter 3 then argues that this human right includes a right to sustain the people we care about, and that often, when we are denied the resources to sustain others, we endure social contribution injustice. Chapters 4 - 6 explore the tension between our needs for social inclusion and our needs for interactive and associative freedom, showing that social inclusion must take priority. While Chapters 5 and 6 defend a narrow account of freedom of association, Chapter 7 shows that the moral ballgame changes once we have made morally messy associative decisions. Sometimes we have rights remain in associations that we had no right to form. Finally, Chapter 8 exposes the distinct social injustices that we do to people whom we deem to be socially threatening. Overall, the book identifies ways to change our social and political practices, and our personal perspectives, to better honour the fact that we are fundamentally social beings."

Abstract: Derrida and Africa takes up Jacques Derrida as a figure of thought in relation to Africa, with a focus on Derrida's writings specifically on Africa, which were influenced in part by his childhood in El Biar. From chapters that take up Derrida as Mother to contemplations on how to situate Derrida in relation to other African philosophers, from essays that connect deconstruction and diaspora to a chapter that engages the ways in which Derrida--especially in a text such as Monolingualism of the Other: or, the Prosthesis of Origin--is haunted by place to a chapter that locates Derrida firmly in postapartheid South Africa, Derrida in/and Africa is the insistent line of inquiry. Edited by Grant Farred, this collection asks: What is Derrida to Africa?, What is Africa to Derrida?, and What is this specter called Africa that haunts Derrida? --
