    Abstract: "How do we teach analysis in anthropology and other field-based sciences? How can we engage analytically and interrogatively with philosophical ideas and concepts in our fieldwork? And how can students learn to engage critical ideas from philosophy to better understand the worlds they study? Philosophy on Fieldwork provides "show-don't-tell" answers to these questions. In twenty-six "master class" chapters, philosophy meets anthropological critique as leading anthropologists introduce the thinking of one foundational philosopher - from a variety of Western traditions and beyond - and apply this critically to an ethnographic case. Nils Bubandt, Thomas Schwarz Wentzer and the contributors to this volume reveal how the encounter between philosophy and fieldwork is fertile ground for analytical insight to emerge. Equally, the philosophical concepts employed are critically explored for their potential to be thought "otherwise" through their frictional encounter with the worlds in the field, allowing non-Western and non-elite life experience and ontologies to "speak back" to both anthropology and philosophy.     Abstract: Wenigen anderen Ethnologen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war es vergönnt, so wie Rüdiger Schott durch eigene Aktivitäten als individuelle Forscherpersönlichkeit maßgebend zum Aufbau und Ausbau ihrer Disziplin beizutragen. Dieser Umstand verdankt sich einerseits den von ihm seit den 60er Jahren durchgeführten Feldforschungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana und den in den 80er Jahren angestellten ethnographischen Erhebungen bei den Lyela in Burkina Faso (vormals: Obervolta), die ihm internationale Reputation und hohe wissenschaftliche Anerkennung eingetragen haben, andererseits der permanenten Umsetzung der erreichten Forschungsergebnisse in die akademische Lehre und in weitere Forschungen, die heute als beispielhaft gelten.
    Abstract: Nicht von ungefähr gehört das Seminar für Völkerkunde der Universität Münster, das von Rüdiger Schott begründet wurde und im April 1990 auf sein 25jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken konnte, gegenwärtig zu den auch im Ausland wohlbekannten deutschen Forschungsstätten seines Fachgebiets. Dies ist nicht zuletzt deswegen der Fall, weil Schott von Anbeginn seine ethnologischen Forschungen in ständigem Austausch mit einer Reihe benachbarter Disziplinen, insbesondere mit den sozialen Handlungswissenschaften betrieben hat, wie beispielsweise mit den Wirtschaftswissenschaften und der Soziologie, der Rechtswissenschaft und den Religionswissenschaften.
    Abstract: Seine Befähigung und bis auf den heutigen Tag praktizierte Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit diesen Nachbardisziplinen basiert auf der Einsicht, daß die Ethnologie ihre eigene Identität nur gewinnen und fortentwickeln kann, wenn sie sich auch auf der Ebene der Ausbildung ihrer analytischen Denkansätze und Grundbegriffe hierfür hinreichend kontaktfähig hält. Was Person, Leben und Werk von Rüdiger Schott angeht, so sind die äußeren Rahmendaten seines bisherigen Forscher- und Universitätslebens rasch berichtet. Jedoch wird eine auf die Forschungsinhalte und die erzielten Ergebnisse gerichtete Analyse den von ihm vorgelegten Resultaten kaum gerecht, wenn sie sich nur auf deren Relevanz für die Ethnologie als solche beschränken wollte.

    Abstract: "Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered. Framed by an introduction that assesses the various approaches to Islamic material culture in recent scholarship, Islam through Objects provides a template for the study of religion and material culture, which engages current theory, subtle and nuanced narratives, and the creative and imaginal capacities of Muslims through history."

    Abstract: "Through staging dialogues between scholars, activists and artists from a variety of disciplinary, geographical and historical specializations, Postcolonial and Postsocialist Dialogues explores the possible resonances and dissonances between the postcolonial and the postsocialist in feminist theorizing and practice. While postcolonial and postsocialist perspectives have been explored in feminist studies, the two analytics tend to be viewed separately. This volume brings together attempts to understand if and how postcolonial and postsocialist dimensions of the human condition - historical, existential, political, and ideological - intersect and correlate in feminist experiences, identities, and struggles. In the three sections that probe the intersections, opacities and challenges between the two discourses, the authors put under pressure what postcolonialism and postsocialism mean for feminist scholarship and activism. The contributions address the emergence of new political and cultural formations as well as circuits of bodies and capital in post-Cold War and postcolonial era in currently re-emerging neo-colonial and imperial conflicts. They engage with issues of gender, sexuality, race, migration, diasporas, indigeneity, and disability, while also developing new analytical tools such as postsocialist precarity, queer postsocialist coloniality, uneventful feminism, feminist opacity, feminist queer crip epistemologies. The collection will be of interest for postcolonial and postsocialist researchers, students of gender studies, feminist activists and scholars"--

    Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has led to radical interventions in healthcare and social life, the efficiency and appropriateness of which are now increasingly at the centre of controversy.     Abstract: Friedrich Kittler (1943–2011) combined the study of literature, cinema, technology, and philosophy in a manner sufficiently novel to be recognized as a new field of academic endeavor in his native Germany. "Media studies," as Kittler conceived it, meant reflecting on how books operate as films, poetry as computer science, and music as military equipment. This volume collects writings from all stages of the author's prolific career. Exemplary essays illustrate how matters of form and inscription make heterogeneous source material (e.g., literary classics and computer design) interchangeable on the level of function—with far-reaching consequences for our understanding of the humanities and the "hard sciences." Mit einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise arbeitet das Handbuch verschiedene Problematisierungen von Menschen und Maschinen, die gerade heute virulent sind, historisch und systematisch auf. Dabei steht die klassische anthropologische Frage nach dem "Menschen" in den jeweiligen Ausprägungen und Wandlungen mit Blick auf Technik im Zentrum. Diese Betrachtung geht nicht von einem einzigartigen, unveränderlichen Wesen des Menschen aus, sondern untersucht die historischen Veränderungen des Menschen durch und mit Technik. Gerade im Zeichen neuer Technologien wie der Digitalisierung und Künstlicher Intelligenz-Forschung steht das Mensch-Maschinen-Verhältnis erneut auf der Agenda.     Abstract: This handbook provides an overview of approaches to, and methods and topics on a historical anthropology of technology. This includes basic concepts, the variety of human technical concepts, technicised practices and the technicisation of senses and skills. Furthermore, it presents important representatives of an anthropology of technology since the early modern period. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume historically and systematically approaches various problems relating to humans and machines that are currently being debated. At the centre of attention is the quintessential anthropological question of what a ‘human being’ is with respect to technology. However, this consideration does not derive from the concept of a unique, unchanging essence of man, but examines the historical changes of man through and with technology. Particularly in light of new technologies such as digitisation and artificial intelligence research, the relationship between humans and machines is once again on the agenda, in which humans and humanity seem to be the subject of discussion

    Abstract: Wen oder was schützen die Menschenrechte? Wie weit reicht die Pflicht zur Nothilfe? Wie passen universalistische Prinzipien und kulturelle Diversität zusammen? Welche Aspekte kultureller Identität sind schützenswert, reformbedürftig oder gar rassistisch? Der vorliegende Band thematisiert prinzipielle Unterscheidungen, empirische Befunde und konkrete Unterrichtsplanungen für die Schule und den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs. Die Gestaltung und Bewertung von Migration haben Gesellschaft und Bildungssystem vor erhebliche Herausforderungen gestellt.     Abstract: This volume examines the aesthetic and performative dimensions of Alevi cultural heritage from past to present, in an interdisciplinary framework and using a wide range of approaches. The chapters analyse traditional, contemporary and transnational developments of Alevi cultural expression including modern adaptations, local and regional practices, Alevism in a wider context, textual sources and materiality. The perspectives of the various authors, including Robert Langer, Nicolas Elias, Sinibaldo De Rosa, Jérôme Cler, Judith Haug, Janina Karolewski and others, each coming from different disciplines, demonstrate the complexity of socio-historical and socio-cultural dynamics. To conclude, the present volume is intended as a first approach to a complex issue, which definitely deserves further research and analysis.

    Abstract: Christmas is an unrivalled annual celebration. This volume traces its history from the early Church's decision to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on 25 December through the medieval period and all the way into the 21st century. It explores Christmas all around the world and presents the variety of ways that worshipping communities observe the festival from Roman Catholics to Reformed Protestants. All of the features of the Nativity Story are covered from the Holy Family to the Magi and the Star, as are the biblical and theological unpinning of Christmas, including the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Virgin Birth.     Abstract: Für den deutschen Kontext ist bislang weitgehend unerforscht, wie sich antisemitische Einstellungen bei Kindern bilden. Aber bereits bei den Sechs- bis Zwölfjährigen prägen sich spätere jugendliche Erscheinungsformen von antisemitischen Einstellungen. Hierbei kommt der religiösen Bildung im Grundschulkontext eine besondere Bedeutung zu, denn das Thema ›Judentum‹ ist für die höheren Grundschulklassen fest in den Lehrplänen verankert und dies führt für viele Schüler*innen zu einer Erstbegegnung mit jüdischer Geschichte, Theologie, Tradition und Kultur – eventuell auch zu einer ersten dialogischen Begegnung mit Menschen jüdischen Glaubens oder dem Besuch einer Synagoge. Dieser Band ist ein evidenter Schritt zu einer friedenspädagogisch motivierten Reform für den Religionsunterricht in der Grundschule: Stärker als bisher gesehen und umgesetzt, steht der Unterricht vor der gesamtgesellschaftlich bedeutsamen Herausforderung antisemitische Präventionsarbeit zu leisten! Even though it is still largely unexplored in the German context whether and how anti-semitic attitudes develop in children, it must be assumed that the roots for later forms of these prejudices in schoolyards and in classrooms are already growing among the six-to-twelve-year-olds. In this context, religious education is of particular importance in the context of primary schools, because the topic of Jewism is firmly anchored in the curricula for the higher elementary school classes and this may lead for many students to a first encounter with Jewish history, theology, tradition and culture – possibly also to a first dialogical encounter with people of Jewish faith or a visit to a synagogue. In this respect, this volume is a step towards a peace education-motivated reform for religious education in primary school: religious education is facing the challenge of doing anti-Semitic prevention work that is of major importance for society as a whole, and is stronger than previously seen and implemented!

    Abstract: This volume explores religious discourses and practices of hospitality in the context of migration. It articulates the implied ambivalences and even contradictions as well as the potential to contribute to a more just world through social interconnection with others. The book features contributors from diverse national, denominational, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Their essays reveal a dichotomy of hospitality between guest and host, while tackling the meaning of home or the loss of it, interrogating both the peril and promise of the relationship between religion, chiefly Christianity, and hospitality, and focusing on the role of migrants’ vulnerability and agency, by drawing from empirical, theological, sociological and anthropological insights emerged from postcolonial migration contexts. With contributions by Andrea Bieler, Jione Havea, Claudia Hoffmann, HyeRan Kim-Cragg, Claudia Jahnel, Isolde Karle, Buhle Mpofu, Armin Nassehi, Ilona Nord, Henrietta Nyamnjoh, Regina Polak, Ludger Pries, Thomas Reynolds, Harsha Walia, Jula Well, and Birgit Weyel.     Abstract: "This book addresses contemporary philosophical issues in higher education and how we can create socially just pedagogies and a socially just university. Providing a forum for thinking through how critical posthumanism, affect theory and feminist new materialisms provide a useful lens for higher education, and shows how these standpoints can benefit methods and practices of learning and teaching. Gross inequalities in higher education continue to affect pedagogical practices across geopolitical contexts and there is a need to consider new theories which call into question the commonplace humanist assumptions currently dominating the discourse around social justice in this context. However scholarship on the affective turn, critical posthumanism and new material feminisms, opens both new possibilities and responsibilities for higher education pedagogies. The approaches of this book also provide imaginative ways of engaging with current dissatisfactions with higher education, from the marketization of education, to issues of racism, discrimination and lack of diversity. Of international relevance, this collection particularly foreground southern contexts and case studies, such as the student activism in South African universities that has sparked a global project of decolonization and social justice in educational institutions.     Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities - or indeed if such change is possible. At a time when the survival of minority populations, and the utility of the label minority has been challenged, this handbook answers the following set of research questions: What are the unique challenges of minority populations in the Middle East? How do minority populations integrate into their host societies, both as a function of their own internal choices, and as a response to majoritarian consensus on their status? Finally, given their inherent challenges, and the vast, sweeping changes that have taken place in the region over the past decade, what is the future of these minority populations? What impact have minority populations had on their societies, and to what extent will they remain prominent actors in their respective settings?

    Abstract: In a world of political upheaval, rising inequality, catastrophic climate change, and widespread doubt of even the most authoritative sources of information, is there a place for critique? This book calls for a systematic reappraisal of critical thinking-its assumptions, its practices, its genealogy, its predicament-following the principle that critique can only start with self-critique.In A Time for Critique, Didier Fassin, Bernard E. Harcourt, and a group of eminent political theorists, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, and literary and legal scholars reflect on the multiplying contexts and forms of critical discourses and on the social actors and social movements engaged in them. How can one maintain sufficient distance from the eventful present without doing it an injustice? How can one address contemporary issues without repudiating the intellectual legacies of the past? How can one avoid the disconnection between theory and action? How can critique be both public and collective? These provocative questions are addressed by revisiting the works of Foucault and Arendt, Said and Césaire, Benjamin and Du Bois, but they are also given substance through on-the-ground case studies that treat subaltern criticism in Palestine, emancipatory mobilizations in Syria, the antitorture campaigns of Sri Lankan activists, and the abolitionism of the African American critical resistance and undercommons movements in the United States.     Abstract: Although we tend to suggest that clear constructions of identity are granted to religious symbols under the assumption that they distinguish between self and other explicitly, perceptions of alterity in fact play a vital role in sacral forms of representation. Markers of foreignness are used in a semantics of the exceptional that characterizes the sacral. Perceptions of difference are thus capable of making visible the remoteness of sacral forms from the profane world of experience. This book, therefore, asks: What role do traits of alterity play in the sacral context? How are various concepts of the sacred synthesized in situations of transcultural translation, for instance in the context of missionary activity? How did an artifact arrive at sacral potency in various cultures, and under what conditions did semantic shifts occur?

    Abstract: Die naturwissenschaftlich erzeugte, soziologisch reflektierte und gesellschaftspolitisch wirksame Vorstellung vom »Anthropozän« ist mit einem Weltbild verbunden, das auf einem dreifachen Paradigmenwechsel beruht: Erstens gilt die Erde nicht länger als selbstverständliche Gegebenheit, sondern als gefährdet. Zweitens rückt der Mensch (erneut) ins Zentrum der Welt, denn er erscheint als maßgeblicher Faktor bei der irreversiblen Veränderung und Zerstörung des Planeten. Und drittens wird die Grenze zwischen Gesellschaft und biophysischer Umwelt unscharf, weil die Hybridisierung der Pole in den Fokus gerät. Die Beiträger_innen dieses Bandes fragen daher nach den wissenschaftlichen Herausforderungen, politischen Kämpfen und sozialen Effekten, die mit dem postulierten Eintritt in das Zeitalter des Anthropozäns einhergehen.
