    Abstract: This book argues that a unique late marriage pattern, discovered in the 1960s but originating in the Middle Ages, explains the continuing puzzle of why western Europe was the site of changes that, from about 1500, gave rise to the modern world. Contrary to views that credit upheavals from the late eighteenth century were reponsible for ushering in the contemporary global era, it contends that the roots of modern developments themselves are located in an event more than a millennium earlier, when the peasants in northwestern Europe began to marry their daughters almost as late as their sons. The appearance of this late marriage system, with its unstable nuclear household form, will also be shown to have exposed for the first time the common ingredients whose presence has perpetuated beliefs in the importance of gender difference and of a sexual hierarchy favoring males

    Abstract: People of European descent form the bulk of the population in most of the temperate zones of the world - North America, Australia and New Zealand. The military successes of European imperialism are easy to explain; in many cases they were a matter of firearms against spears. But, as Alfred Crosby maintains in this highly original and fascinating book, the Europeans' displacement and replacement of the native peoples in the temperate zones was more a matter of biology than of military conquest. European organisms had certain decisive advantages over their New World and Australian counterparts. The spread of European disease, flora, and fauna went hand in hand with the growth of populations.     Abstract: Main description: What development did anti-Semitism take in Spain when, after the Banishment Edict (1492), the country was no longer a locus of co-existence for different ethnic groups? This was the topic central to the colloquium in Konstanz (May 2000), the results of which are presented here. The colloquium united anthropologists, historians and literary scholars. This interdisciplinary approach focused on the factors, spaces, figures and voices involved in anti-Jewish (and hence anti-Semitic) discourse, both in their historical context and in their literary representation. On the latter issue, as much attention is given to the apologetic as to the critical aspect.

    Abstract: Why is English national identity so enigmatic and so elusive? Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day. He argues that the long history of the English as an imperial people has, as with other imperial people like the Russians and the Austrians, developed a sense of missionary nationalism which in the interests of unity and empire has necessitated the repression of ordinary expressions of nationalism. Professor Kumar's lively and provocative approach challenges readers to reconsider their pre-conceptions about national identity and who the English really are.

    Abstract: »Identikit for Latin America« is a collection of essays compiled by Gustav Siebenmann on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The first section is given over to fundamental considerations on cultural comparison and cultural identity. These are followed by essays on the quest for Latin American identity, the changes undergone by the image of Latin America in the mentality and literature of German-speaking nations, the role of the latter in the history of the continent, and their contribution to research on the region. After a comparison of the centenary celebrations to mark the discovery of America, the volume closes with a discussion of development problems.
    Abstract: »Suchbild Lateinamerika« ist eine Essaysammlung, die Gustav Siebenmann zum Anlaß seines 80. Geburtstags zusammengestellt hat. Es sind zunächst grundsätzliche Überlegungen zum Kulturvergleich und zur kulturellen Identität. Danach folgen Arbeiten über die Identitätssuche der Lateinamerikaner, über den Wandel des Lateinamerikabildes in Mentalität und Literatur der Deutschsprachigen, ferner über deren Rolle in der Geschichte des Kontinents sowie über deren Beitrag zur Forschung. Nach einem Vergleich der Zentenarfeiern der Entdeckung Amerikas folgt eine Diskussion über die Entwicklungsproblematik.

    Abstract: This explores the question of when and why violence by and against new religious cults erupts and whether and how such dramatic conflicts can be foreseen, managed and averted. The authors, leading international experts on religious movements and violent behavior, focus on the four major episodes of cult violence during the last decade: the tragic conflagration that engulfed the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas; the deadly sarin gas attack by the Aum Shinrikyo in Tokyo; the murder-suicides by the Solar Temple in Switzerland and Canada; and the collective suicide by the members of Heaven's Gate. They explore the dynamics leading to these dramatic episodes in North America, Europe, and Asia, and offer insights into the general relationship between violence and religious cults in contemporary society.     Abstract: Addressing the dynamics of power in early modern societies, this book challenges the existing tendency to see past societies in terms of binary oppositions - such as male/female, rich/poor, rulers/ruled - in which the disadvantaged have influence only in moments of direct confrontation. Drawing on recent social theory, the essays offer a series of micro-sociologies of power in early modern society, ranging from the politics of age, gender and class to the politics of state-building in the post-Reformation confessional state. They explore the weapons with which subordinated groups in their everyday lives could moderate the exercise of power over them. Recovering the agency of the disadvantaged, the book also explores the limits to the power that the disadvantaged could claim in the past. Its findings also have relevance for thinking about inequality in present-day societies

Die in diesem Band vereinigten Studien, Ergebnisse eines Kolloquiums, das der Wolfenbütteler Arbeitskreis für Renaissanceforschung zusammen mit der Ungarischen Akademie der Wissenschaften veranstaltete, wenden sich im interdisziplinären Ausgriff und in internationaler Perspektive sowohl den Akteuren der osmanisch-europäischen Konfrontation wie auch den Autoren, Schreibweisen, Problemlagen, Traditionslinien und Rezeptionsmodalitäten der einschlägigen Literatur zu.
    Abstract: Main description: The triumphant arrival of the Ottoman Turks before the gates of Vienna generated a spate of widely variegated writings almost too manifold to be surveyed from a present-day viewpoint and encompassing all the material resources of communication available at the time. As such this body of writing may be legitimately regarded as a transnational paradigm of early modern public communication. The studies in this volume present the results of a colloquium organized by the Wolfenbüttel Research Group on the Renaissance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are interdisciplinary in nature and international in their perspective and examine both the actors involved in the confrontation between Turks and Europeans and the authors, styles, problems, lines of tradition and reception modalities identifiable in the literature it generated.

    Abstract: Why were the countries with the most developed institutions of individual freedom also the leaders in establishing the most exploitative system of slavery that the world has ever seen? In seeking to provide new answers to this question, The Rise of African Slavery in the Americas examines the development of the English Atlantic slave system between 1650 and 1800. The book outlines a major African role in the evolution of the Atlantic societies before the nineteenth century and argues that the transatlantic slave trade was a result of African strength rather than African weakness. It also addresses changing patterns of group identity to account for the racial basis of slavery in the early modern Atlantic World.
