    Kurzfassung: The 'Jewish mother' figure is a hallmark of Jewish culture, one which appears in the works of rabbis, artists, poets, and activists across time and place. While depictions of mothers and motherhood abound in Jewish writings, they vary significantly according to social context. These representations therefore offer important insights into the Jewish cultural imagination, and the ways in which writers resort to the figure of the Jewish mother to comprehend and construct their world. This book highlights the complex network of symbols and images associated with Jewish mothers and motherhood as well as the vast array of social, historical, and cultural patterns that characterizations of mothers reflect.

    Kurzfassung: Encounters, networks, identities and diversity are at the core of the history of Buddhism. They are also the focus of Buddhist Encounters and Identities across East Asia , edited by Ann Heirman, Carmen Meinert and Christoph Anderl. While long-distance networks allowed Buddhist ideas to travel to all parts of East Asia, it was through local and trans-local networks and encounters, and a diversity of people and societies, that identities were made and negotiated. This book undertakes a detailed examination of discrete Buddhist identities rooted in unique cultural practices, beliefs and indigenous socio-political conditions. Clark, is if Christianity should most accurately be identified as “Chinese” when it displays vestiges of Chinese cultural aesthetics, or whether Chinese Christianity is more indigenous when it is allowed to form its own theological framework. In other words, can theological uniqueness also function as a legitimate Chinese Christian cultural expression in the formation of its own ecclesial identity? Also central to what is explored in this book is how missionary influences, consciously or unconsciously, introduced seeds of independence into the cultural ethos of China’s Christian community. Chinese girls who pushed “the limits of proper behaviour,” for example, added to the larger sense of confidence as China’s Christians began to resist the model of Christianity they had inherited from foreign missionaries.     Kurzfassung: Bourdieu in Africa: Exploring the Dynamics of Religious Fields offers a view of religions as social games played by interested actors. Analyzing practices as strategic moves, this critical approach conceptualizes the religious field as relations of exchange and competition between experts and laity, and explores how the actors’ habitus, including religious beliefs, serve to misrecognize and thus legitimize relations of power within the religious sphere and beyond.     Kurzfassung: Using the potential of place as an approach and of places as ethnographic contexts, the authors in this volume investigate the multiple entanglements of ‘religion’ and ‘modernity’ in contemporary settings. The guiding questions of such an approach are: How are modernity and religion spatially articulated in and through places? How do these articulations help us to understand the ways in which religion becomes socially and culturally significant in modern contexts? And how do they reveal the ways in which modernity unfolds within religion? Thus, places are not only understood as neutral locations or extensions, but as spatial modes to mediate properties, contents and processes of religion and modernity. Based on ethnographic and historical research in Southeast and East Asia and featuring reflections on the concepts of religion and modernity respectively, the authors offer a deeper understanding of the articulation of a religious modernity in these regions and beyond.     Kurzfassung: Unter »Okzidentalismus« wird hier ein Diskurs abendländischer Hegemonieproduktion verstanden, der ein »orientalisiertes« Anderes in der muslimischen Diaspora und im politischen Islamismus verkörpert sieht. »Okzidentalismuskritik« begreift Neo-Orientalismen und antimuslimische Rassismen nicht als Folge von Migration und internationalen Konflikten, sondern als Kristallisation neuer nationaler und europäischer Identitätsbildungen, in der Gender und Sexualpolitik eine strategische Rolle spielen. Das transdisziplinäre Projekt führt Beiträge aus der Postcolonial, Queer und Critical Whiteness Theory auf historischen sowie sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Feldern zusammen.

    Kurzfassung: Culture is a constant reference in debates surrounding Islam in Europe. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. This volume extends such analysis of culture by approaching it as semiotic practice which conjoins the making of subjects with the configuration of the social. Examining fields such as memory, literature, film, and Islamic art, the studies in this volume explore culture as another element in the assemblage of rationalities governing European Islam. From this perspective, the transformations of European identities can be understood as a matter of cultural practice and politics, which extend the analytical frames of political philosophy, historical legacies, normative orders and social dynamics.

    Kurzfassung: Between Harmony and Discrimination explores the varying expressions of religious practices and the intertwined, shifting interreligious relationships of the peoples of Bali and Lombok. As religion has become a progressively more important identity marker in the 21st century, the shared histories and practices of peoples of both similar and differing faiths are renegotiated, reconfirmed or reconfigured. This renegotiation, inspired by Hindu or Islamic reform movements that encourage greater global identifications, has created situations that are perceived locally to oscillate between harmony and discrimination depending on the relationships and the contexts in which they are acting. Religious belonging is increasingly important among the Hindus and Muslims of Bali and Lombok; minorities (Christians, Chinese) on both islands have also sought global partners. Dance practices and attitudes about ethnicity have sometimes been the source of outright discord, such as when African Americans were - and sometimes still are - told that their bodies are "not right" for ballet, when Anglo Americans painted their faces black to perform in minstrel shows, when nineteenth-century Christian missionaries banned the performance of particular native dance traditions throughout much of Polynesia, and when the Spanish conquistadors and church officials banned sacred Aztec dance rituals. The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Ethnicity brings together scholars from across the globe to investigate what it means to define oneself in an ethnic category and how this category is performed and represented by dance as an ethnicity.

Für die einen Ausdruck einer Vision des bereichernden Zusammenlebens verschiedener Kulturen, ist sie für die anderen Symbol einer Gesellschaft ohne nationale Identität. Ein konfliktfreies multikulturelles Miteinander voller Harmonie scheint illusorisch. Realistisch ist jedoch der Anspruch, Chancen und Güter nicht nach ethnischen Kriterien zu verteilen. Eine gerechte Welt kann nur über Solidarität unter Gleichwertigen gestaltet werden - ohne Anschauung der ethnischen Zugehörigkeit. Der Band geht der Frage nach, wie dies gelingen kann.

    Kurzfassung: Der Blick auf das Außerordentliche der Gewalt reicht nicht hin, um dieses Phänomen in seiner Funktion und Bedeutung für soziale bzw. pädagogische Verhältnisse zu verstehen. Gewalt wird gemeinhin als das begriffen, was die Geregeltheit des Sozialen gleichsam von außen in Frage stellt. Als wichtige pädagogische Reaktionsformen erscheinen deshalb Prävention und Intervention, um die geregelte Ordnung des Sozialen aufrechtzuerhalten oder wiederherzustellen. Hierbei wird übersehen, dass die Herbeiführung und Stabilisierung von Ordnungen selbst in Gewalt verstrickt sind und dass Gewalt gar nicht kopflos, sondern im Zusammenhang mit Kalkülen und Rationalitäten operiert. Es ist mit-hin notwendig, die Gewalt in der Logik des Sozialen bzw. Pädagogischen aufzuzeigen und zu analysieren. Dabei zeigt sich aber auch die Schwierigkeit einer 'Verfügung' über Gewalt - in der Bestimmung, wo sie 'beginnt', und bei dem Versuch, sie zu verstehen.

Ethnologische Forschungen haben dazu beigetragen, die transnationale Perspektive in der Migrationsforschung zu etablieren, indem nicht nur die verschiedenen Aufenthaltsorte von Migranten und Migrantinnen und ihren Familienangehörigen, sondern auch die Transaktionen und Vernetzungen zwischen diesen in den Blick gerückt sind. Migranten reaktivieren nicht nur die eigene Religion und leben sie teilweise aktiver als in der Heimat, sondern das Nebeneinander unterschiedlicher Religionen im Einwanderungsland führt auch zu einer erhöhten Pluralisierung von religiöser Kultur mit den verschiedensten Wirkungen und Dynamiken.In diesem Buch wird auf Basis aktueller ethnographischer Forschung die Verwobenheit informeller Mikropolitiken und makrostruktureller Angelegenheiten von Religion und rituellen Praxen untersucht. Dabei geht es zentral um das Spannungsfeld zwischen individuellen Handlungsstrategien und den kulturellen wie sozialen Zugehörigkeiten im transnationalen Raum.

    Kurzfassung: Der Band befasst sich mit den ethischen Aspekten interkultureller Praxis und ethnologischen Verstehens. Sein Ziel besteht nicht in der abstrakten Definition ethischer Universalien, sondern in der Beschreibung jener Unvereinbarkeiten, aber auch Ergänzungsmöglichkeiten, die sich aus dem Zusammentreffen unterschiedlicher ethischer Traditionen in einer gemeinsamen Lebenswelt ergeben. Die Beiträge nähern sich dem Problem interkultureller und interreligiöser Konflikte daher aus einer anderen Perspektive an als die Debatten um universelle ethische Werte oder um ein gemeinsames Weltethos. Während diese davon ausgehen, dass ethische und kulturelle Differenzen in einer globalen Praxis nur durch die Rückbindung an universelle Prinzipien zu bewältigen sind, loten die hier versammelten Beiträge jene kreativen Spielräume der wechselseitigen Ergänzung und Selbstreflexion aus, die sich aus der Begegnung verschiedener Wissenskulturen und Wertvorstellungen ergeben.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes zeigen, wie unverzichtbar differenzierende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven sind, die sich auf die Vielfalt des Islam (auch in Europa), seine unterschiedlichen religiösen Strömungen, Lebensformen und Vorstellungen von Geschlechterordnungen richten.Diskutiert wird die Beziehung zwischen Islam, Geschlecht und Menschenrechten. Dabei kommt das Potenzial der reform-islamischen Ansätze zur Sprache, die nicht nur eine Herausforderung für die politischen Richtungen des Islam darstellen, sondern sich auch am Konzept der Gleichheit bei der Auslegung des islamischen Rechts im Hinblick auf die Geschlechterverhältnisse orientieren.

    Kurzfassung: Allmählich beginnt man zu erkennen, daß die moderne Wirkungsgeschichte des Islams wie kaum ein anderes Phänomen dazu beigetragen hat, die Grundlagen der westlichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Frage zu stellen. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt. Es wird diskutiert, inwieweit auf sie aufbauend die Probleme des Islams in der modernen, globalisierten Gesellschaft untersucht werden können und entsprechende Forschungsansätze entwickelt.

    Kurzfassung: This volume contains a collection of studies describing and analyzing stereotypes of women in the religions of Ancient Israel and Mesopotamia, and in Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Medieval Christianity, Islam, Indian Sufism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Tibetan religions, and modern Neopaganism. In all these traditions the stereotypes are based on generalizations, which are socially, culturally or religiously legitimized, and which seem to have a lasting influence on society's conceptions of women. They represent oversimplified opinions, which are, however, regularly challenged by the women who are affected by them. In all traditions the stereotypes are ambiguous, either because women have challenged their validity, or because historical developments in society have reshaped them. They influence public opinion by emphasizing dominant views, as a strategy to restrain women and to keep them controlled by the rules and morals of a male-dominated society
