    Abstract: This Open Access Pivot represents the first extensive exploration of social accountability within the Arab world following the 2011 Arab uprisings. Drawing on insights from development studies, comparative politics, and Middle East studies, the authors explore the evolution of accountability as a governance concept, review theories on social accountability’s role in improving public service delivery, and categorize types of social accountability initiatives, highlighting respective strengths and weaknesses. Detailed country chapters provide a solid basis for the comparative approach which reveals major variations in meanings of accountability, mobilization strategies, and official responses, rooted in the specific sociopolitical contexts of each country. Moreover, the book analyzes the influence of political and economic elites as well as the nature of popular mobilisation on accountability dynamics in the region. The authors conclude by discerning differences and commonalities across cases and offer recommendations for policymakers, donors, and practitioners seeking to enhance the effectiveness of social accountability initiatives.     Abstract: In the last years, the labor market integration of immigrant women has received much attention in the migration literature. We examine gender differences in labor market integration among refugees and other new immigrants who came to Germany during a similar period from a dynamic perspective. Using two panel data sources, which include recently arrived refugees (the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Sample of Refugees) and other immigrants (the IAB-SOEP Migration Sample) in Germany, we compare the dynamics and sources of employment gender gap among refugees and other immigrants. The results uncover narrow initial gender differences among refugees that grow over time and a reversed pattern among other immigrants. However, female refugees’ initial disadvantaged starting position maintains five years after arrival. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the explanations offered in the literature cannot fully explain the hurdles female refugees and other immigrants face when entering the labor market.

    Abstract: This book covers the notion of collective memory – broadly defined as the ways in which differing pasts are created, understood and reproduced – and how this is perpetuated in Northern Ireland by a wide set of social actors, including nations, religious and political groupings, and local communities. Such collective memories are not a preservative for historically accurate recall of bygone events but rather readings of the past subject to contemporary interpretations and political pressure. The adoption of political symbolism remains central to subsequent events. Indeed, in Northern Ireland, both communities hold their conflicting ‘memories’ dear and, importantly, rival political organizations have invested much in their own reading of the causes of the outbreak and continuation of the conflict. Set alongside constant exposure to other forms of discourse, texts, songs, prose and more visible physical manifestations – such as murals, commemorative gardens, personal tattoos, and even gravestones – there are a multitude of ways of reminding people of particular memories, community histories and interpretations of events, and of providing the background within which attitudes are formed. McAuley is Professor Emeritus of Political Sociology and Irish Studies at the University of Huddersfield, Visiting Professor in Political Sociology at Leeds Beckett University and Honorary Research Fellow in Political Psychology at Liverpool Hope University. .

    Abstract: Seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg galten Massenkommunikation und Propaganda als integrale Faktoren des politischen und militärischen Geschehens. Damit wuchs der Bedarf an systematischer Expertise und wissenschaftlicher Erforschung. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und im Kalten Krieg wurde die Planung, Beobachtung und Analyse von Propaganda zu einem wichtigen Feld strategischer Wissensproduktion. Im Wege einer dreiseitig verflochtenen Wahrnehmungs- und Beziehungsgeschichte untersucht Benno Nietzel, welche Rolle Kommunikationsexperten und Wissenschaftler in der Propaganda dreier Länder spielten: in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Deutschland und der Sowjetunion. Verschiedene Akteursgruppen konkurrierten jeweils um Gehör, Einfluss und Zuständigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Propaganda. Aus ihren Erfolgen und ihrem Scheitern ergibt sich eine alternative Geschichte von Verwissenschaftlichungsprozessen und Expertentum im 20. Jahrhundert, die von Ungleichzeitigkeiten, Gegenläufigkeiten und Widersprüchen gekennzeichnet ist

    Abstract: Armin Nassehi erklärt in seinem neuen Buch die zentralen gesellschaftlichen Grundbegriffe der Gegenwart. Was bedeutet es, wenn wir von Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/ Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit sprechen? Diese Begriffe haben allesamt auch eine Herkunft im akademischen Kontext, haben in öffentlichen Debatten aber mit ihrem praktischen Gebrauch längst ein Eigenleben entwickelt. Von dort wirken sie übrigens auf den akademischen Begriffsgebrauch zurück. Nassehi bringt nun Ordnung in den Diskurs - nicht indem er eine «richtige» Begriffsbedeutung festlegen will, sondern indem er darüber aufklärt, welche offensichtlichen, aber auch welche versteckten Funktionen der Gebrauch dieser Grundbegriffe erfüllt. Er ist sich freilich dessen gewiss, dass, wie Niklas Luhmann einmal bemerkte, die Soziologie «neue Selbstbeschreibungen der Gesellschaft allenfalls anbrüten, nicht aber durchsetzen» kann. Armin Nassehis Sammlung gesellschaftlicher Grundbegriffe ist keine oberlehrerhafte Aufforderung zum richtigen Sprechen. Vielmehr werden die Begriffe methodisch danach abgeklopft, welche Funktion sie in Debatten haben. Die Grundfrage ist stets, für welches Problem solche Begriffe und ihr Gebrauch die Lösung sind. Gesellschaftliche Grundbegriffe wie Demokratie, Freiheit, Gleichheit/Ungleichheit, Identität, Krise und Fremdheit haben nicht nur eine lexikalische Bedeutung, die man historisch herleiten kann, sondern eben auch eine praktische Bedeutung durch ihren Gebrauch in Debatten. Wer erkennt, welche Funktion manche Begriffe haben, was sie zeigen und was sie verbergen, hat womöglich das Rüstzeug, öffentliche Debatten besser zu verstehen. Dabei richtet sich der Fokus in Nassehis Buch nicht nur auf den öffentlichen Gebrauch jener begrifflichen Vernunft, sondern auch auf die soziale Herkunft der Begriffe aus den Sozialwissenschaften - und auf die Art und Weise, wie sie vom öffentlichen Diskurs auf jene Wissenschaft zurückwirken.

    Abstract: Since the end of the USSR, post-Soviet Jewry has evolved into an ethnically and culturally diverse Russian speaking community. This process is taking place against the gradual inflation of a collective identity among Russian-speaking Jews that survived the first post-Soviet decade. The infrastructure for this new entity is provided by new local (or ethno-civic) groups of East European Ashkenazi Jewry with specific communal, subcultural, and ethno-political identities ("Ukrainian," "Moldavian," or "Russian" Jews, e.g.). These communities demonstrate a changing balance of identification between their countries of residence and the "transnational Russian-Jewish community", and they absorb a significant number of persons of non-Jewish and ethnically heterogeneous origins as well. This book discusses identity, community modes, migration dynamics, socioeconomic status, attitudes toward Israel, social and political environments, and other parameters framing these trends using the results of a comprehensive sociological study of the extended Jewish population conducted in 2019-2020 by this author in the five former-Soviet Union countries (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, and Kazakhstan).

    Abstract: This book presents a new organizing framework for studying democratic recession and autocratization in Southeast Asia. By introducing a new concept, “democratic backlash,” the book details how democratic recession inevitably provokes resistance that often forms the nucleus of new democratic movements, and in doing so, argues that it is important to identify these reverse trends that may eventually become dominant. The book contributes to current literature which thus far has sought to understand the causes and consequences of the decline in democracy around the world. Previous literature has focused primarily on advanced democracies, or alternatively, on large scale quantitative comparison. As such, this book helps fill a research gap with its focus on Southeast Asia, employing a comparative case study approach. Chapter authors are experts on Southeast Asia, a region that has experienced democratic recession and autocratization in a variety of ways, from rising populism to military coups. Dr. James Ockey lectures in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He has published widely on democratization and autocratization in Thailand. He is a co-founder and director of the Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SEARI) at the University of Canterbury. Dr. Naimah S. Talib is an adjunct senior fellow in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Canterbury. Her research focuses on democratization and the role of Islam in politics in Southeast Asia. She has done extensive research on the history and politics of Malaysia and Brunei. .

    Abstract: This book follows the author's 22-year journey through Cyprus and surrounding countries beyond in an exploration of conflict resolution with regard to the Cyprus Problem. The struggle is emblematic of numerous international attempts over the years to resolve this identity-based ethnic conflict historically referred to as the Cyprus Problem. So far all have failed miserably. The current situation indicates any solution other than a formal partition of the island between the two communities seems increasingly remote as the years pass.This has led the author to conclude a resolution to the Cyprus Problem no longer is a realistic political goal, but rather one eclipsed by the need for a non-political solution, which at least may succeed in convincing people on both sides to live together peacefully for their joint benefit.     Abstract: This book is the first of a work in two parts addressing the relations between the transnational society and the state. It is dedicated to the analysis and conceptualisation of transnational societies. This work moves beyond the mere depiction of transborder socialities by shedding light on the fundamental structures underpinning them. It investigates the mechanics of their formation and evolution, their demise or transformation into diasporas. It theorises transmigrants as plural humans embedded and socialised in multiple settings, and whose activities are sustained and framed by three key social institutions: transnational families, businesses and associations. It sheds light on the construction of an intersubjective moral framework regulating the relations between migrants and non-migrants. Finally, it examines the space-time continuum of transnational societies. Thomas Lacroix is a geographer, CNRS director of research at the Centre for International Research of Sciences Po Paris and a fellow of the Institut Convergence Migrations.

    Abstract: This book discusses the impact of the process of accession to the European Union (EU) – i.e. Europeanisation – on the formulation of the ethnic identity of Bosnian Serbs and the political identity of Republika Srpska (RS) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The centrepiece of the book is an examination of how it is possible that the expected effect of Europeanisation on ethnic identities in a post-conflict environment – a transformation of ethnic identities through desecuritisation – does not materialise in the case of BiH and the RS. The book starts from the assumption that the political elite in the RS uses Europeanisation as a context for the securitization of two sources of threats – the internal and external Other. This prevents the transformation of ethnic identities in BiH, and as a result also the desecuritisation of antagonisms among the ethnic groups of BiH. The results show that any attempt at a more active engagement by the EU and international community was interpreted by the RS political elite as Bosniak agenda aimed against the RS. In this respect, the book demonstrates that BiH’s EU accession process or a clearer EU perspective alone in scrutinized critical junctures did not outweigh the potential costs for the RS political elite if reforms aimed at creating a more functional BiH were to succeed. In all three analysed critical junctures, the political elite in RS presented motions for a more functional BiH as attempts to centralise the country and framed them as the beginning of the end for the RS as a political entity. Faris Kočan is Assistant Professor at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences. His research is focused on the Europeanisation of the Western Balkans and the role of the European integration in addressing the troubled past of post-Yugoslav space. He has published, among others, in the Nationalities Papers, Ethnopolitics, Southeast European and Black Sea Studies, and contributed chapters to monographs published in international publishing houses (Peter Lang, Ibidem). He has been working on many research projects, including those funded by Horizon 2020, JM/Erasmus+ and Slovenian Research Council.

    Abstract: Spätestens mit den Debatten zu einer zunehmenden Polarisierung der deutschen und anderer europäischer Gesellschaften rückt die Frage nach Prozessen der Radikalisierung in den Blick. Neben individuellen Radikalisierungen sind es vor allem gesellschaftliche Rahmenbedingungen, die für die Radikalisierung, manchmal sogar ganzer Gruppen, verantwortlich zeichnen. Im vorliegenden Buch werden unter Einbezug unterschiedlicher Perspektiven Prozesse der Radikalisierung und damit verbundenen Co-Radikalisierung auf rechtsextremer und muslimischer Seite untersucht und diskutiert. Die Herausgeber*innen Dr. Susanne Pickel ist Professorin für Politikwissenschaft mit dem Schwerpunkt Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft am Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Universität Duisburg-Essen.
