    Kurzfassung: Konflikte scheinen heute gleichbedeutend mit Gewalt und Krieg. Doch Konflikte sind vielschichtig: Sie können sowohl zur Integration von Gesellschaften beitragen als auch diese zerbrechen. Die Anthropologie der Konflikte, zu der Georg Elwert weiterführende Thesen beigetragen hat, beleuchtet unterschiedliche Konfliktdynamiken und geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen integrative, eskalative oder segregative Institutionen der Konfliktaustragung entstehen - oder wieder zerfallen.     Kurzfassung: Latin America is both the world's most urbanized fastest developing regions, where the links between social exclusion, inequality and violence are clearly visible. The banal, ubiquitous nature of drug crime, robbery, gang and intra-family violence destabilizes countries' economies and harms their people and social structures. Encounters with Violence & Crime in Latin America explores the meaning of violence and insecurity in nine towns and cities in Columbia and Guatemala to create a framework of how and why daily violence takes place at the community level. It uses pioneering new methods of participatory urban appraisal to ask local people about their own perceptions of violence as mediated by family, gender, ethnicity and age. It develops a typology which distinguishes between the political, social, and economic violence that afflicts communities, and which assesses the costs of consequences of violence in terms of community cohesion and social capital. This gives voice to those whose daily lives and dominated by widespread aggression, and provides important new insights for researchers and policy-makers.

Anders als in den Naturwissenschaften aber ist dem konzeptuellen Stellenwert des Bewegungsbegriffs in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden.Die interdisziplinäre Textsammlung verfolgt das Ziel, den Status quo des Begriffs in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften zu reflektieren und sein theoretisches Potenzial zu bestimmen.     Kurzfassung: Zwar ist in den letzten Jahren der Konsens gewachsen, dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, aber der Blick auf Migranten hat sich dadurch nicht wesentlich geändert. Auf der Basis des Paradigmas kultureller Differenz gelten sie nach wie vor als die Anderen, die Fremden. Doch die Fremdheit der Migranten als eine Prämisse der Debatte über Einwanderung in Deutschland verstellt den Blick für eine sehr vielfältige und gar nicht unbedingt fremde Lebenswirklichkeit. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes nun stellen diese Prämisse in Frage. Sie untersuchen, wie in den Diskursen von Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft die kulturelle Differenz vor allem der Einwanderer aus der Türkei immer wieder festgeschrieben wird und diskutieren anhand neuer theoretischer Zugänge alternative Perspektiven. Damit bereichert der Band die gegenwärtige Diskussion um Migration um notwendige innovative Positionen

    Kurzfassung: Die meisten Tätigkeiten werden unbedacht, rein routinemäßig verrichtet. Bei anderen dagegen, von denen Wichtiges, vielleicht das Leben, abhängt, denkt sich der Handelnde etwas, das sein Verhalten dann leitet. Bewußt »sinnlos« würde in derartigen Fällen wohl kaum jemand handeln. Sinnvoll können jedoch nur handlungsleitende Zwecke erscheinen, die auch von anderen als solche verstanden werden. Sinnsysteme sind daher immer Gruppenkonzepte, die Orientierungs- und darum notwendig auch Begründungs- und Präskriptions-, in umstrittenen Fällen zusätzlich Rechtfertigungsfunktionen erfüllen. Das läßt sich besonders deutlich an prämodernen, stark traditionsbestimmt lebenden, d.h. höchstmäßig kohärenten Gesellschaften darstellen. Die Buchbeiträge exemplifizieren das an zwei Haupttypen derartiger Gemeinschafts- und Kulturformen und zeigen anschließend auf, wie unter dem Einfluß stratifizierter, »hochkulturlicher« Sozietäten die alten Sinnsysteme zerfallen, umgedeutet, rekombiniert und neue entwickelt werden - bis hin zur postkolonialen Zeit. Den Abschluß bildet eine allgemeine Entwicklungssystematik und Theorie der Sinntypenkonstituierung. Das Fazit lautet, daß Sinnkonzepte einem Grundbedürfnis sozialer Gruppen entsprechen, Identität begründen und insofern eine fundamentale analytische Bedeutung für das Verständnis gesellschaftlicher Seins- und Lebensauffassungen sowie das Vermögen besitzen, sich erfolgreich mit Konfliktsituationen gerade auch unter den Bedingungen pluralistischer, multikultureller Gesellschaftsformen auseinanderzusetzen

    Kurzfassung: Eine der zentralen Debatten der Cultural Studies beschäftigt sich mit dem Zusammenspiel von Medien und Identität. Die vorliegende Aufsatzsammlung liefert hier einen neuen Ansatzpunkt, indem ihre Beiträge Medien als Konstrukteure von Identitätsräumen verstehen. Unter dieser Perspektive werden folgende Themen behandelt: Welche »spaces of identity« ergeben sich aufgrund der medientechnologischen Entwicklungen? Mit diesen Fragestellungen gibt der Band spannende Impulse zu den Cultural Studies wie auch zu den theoretisch avancierten Gender und Media Studies.

In dem vorliegenden Band sind diese Verfahren erstmals Gegenstand einer einführenden Übersichtsdarstellung. Dabei wird die Leistungsfähigkeit dieser Verfahren aus demokratietheoretischer Perspektive untersucht.     Kurzfassung: Was heißt Globalisierung »wirklich«? Die Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den USA hat sich zum paradigmatischen »borderland« des globalen Zeitalters entwickelt. Das Buch führt die Leser an diese Grenze und begleitet Arbeitsmigranten in der nordmexikanischen Stadt Ciudad Juárez. Empirisch fundiert erzählt der Autor davon, was es bedeutet, für transnationale Konzerne und nördliche Konsumenten zu arbeiten. Auf diesem Wege wird eine vielfach gebrochene Stadt vorgestellt, deren Bewohner ihre Identitäten ständig neu verhandeln müssen und dabei soziale und kulturelle Differenzen in räumliche Grenzen überführen. Die Darstellung gleichsam globalisierter wie ortsgebundener Lebenswirklichkeiten ist eingelassen in einen anspruchsvollen theoretischen Rahmen und versteht sich als Plädoyer für eine post-territoriale Geographie

    Kurzfassung: After Race pushes us beyond the old "race vs. class" debates to delve deeper into the structural conditions that spawn racism. Darder and Torres place the study of racism forthrightly within the context of contemporary capitalism. While agreeing with those who have argued that the concept of "race" does not have biological validity, they go further to insist that the concept also holds little political, symbolic, or descriptive value when employed in social science and policy research.Darder and Torres argue for the need to jettison the concept of "race," while calling adamantly for the critical study of racism. They maintain that an understanding of structural class inequality is fundamentally germane to comprehending the growing significance of racism in capitalist America.

Exploring intriguing commonalities - for example, between tattooed Egyptian mummies of 2000 BC and modern subcultural styles - Calefato considers the psychological, cultural, spiritual and symbolic significances at play in what she aptly labels 'body cartography'. Beiträge aus Cultural Studies, Ethnologie, Soziolinguistik, Pädagogik und anderen Disziplinen werden mit Essays von Szene-Autoren zusammengeführt. Allen gemeinsam ist das Verständnis von HipHop als Raum kultureller Praxis mit »globalen« Konturen und »lokalen« Aneignungsformen. Das Rahmenthema wird ausdifferenziert in ein Mosaik aus Themen und Theorieperspektiven, u.a.     Kurzfassung: Seit einigen Jahren wird in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften international kaum ein Phänomen so lebhaft diskutiert wie das der Globalisierung. Nachdem die zu Anfang vorherrschende Sichtweise von Globalisierung als Entwicklung einer homogenen Weltkultur zunehmend an Evidenz verlor, rücken die lokal unterschiedlichen kulturellen Praktiken und Perspektiven als Teil von Globalisierung ins Zentrum des Interesses. Diese Neujustierung des Fokus erlaubt auch längst überfällige neue Lesarten des vermeintlich einfachen Verhältnisses von »Amerikanisierung« und Globalisierung. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die oft als »Amerikanisierung« wahrgenommene Globalisierung weltweit heterogene Resonanzen erzeugt, hybride Kulturen, Fluchtlinien und Gegenbewegungen treten gleichermaßen hervor. Der Band »Globales Amerika«, in dem sich einige der prominentesten Denker der Globalisierung zu Wort melden, präsentiert anregende Lektüren dieser bislang wenig beleuchteten Seite der Globalisierung und leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis des Problems insgesamt. Für das 21. Jahrhundert erweist sich die Perspektive eines »methodologischen Kosmopolitismus« (Ulrich Beck) als richtungsweisend

Bringing to life the striking personalities and vibrant milieu that fueled this era, Nan Alamilla Boyd examines the culture that developed around the bar scene and homophile activism. She argues that the communities forged inside bars and taverns functioned politically and, ultimately, offered practical and ideological responses to the policing of San Francisco's queer and transgender communities. Using police and court records, oral histories, tourist literature, and manuscript collections from local and state archives, Nan Alamilla Boyd explains the phenomenal growth of San Francisco as a "wide-open town"-a town where anything goes. She also relates the early history of the gay and lesbian civil rights movement that took place in San Francisco prior to 1965. Wide-Open Town argues that police persecution forged debates about rights and justice that transformed San Francisco's queer communities into the identity-based groups we see today. In its vivid re-creation of bar and drag life, its absorbing portrait of central figures in the communities, and its provocative chronicling of this period in the country's most transgressive city, Wide-Open Town offers a fascinating and lively new chapter of American queer history.

    Kurzfassung: Breakdance, DJ-ing, Rap, Graffiti: Die »vier Elemente« der HipHop-Kultur haben sich in den letzten 20 Jahren vom afroamerikanischen Kontext aus weltweit verbreitet. Heute stellt HipHop eine vielseitige Arena der Popkultur dar - ein Medium kultureller Artikulation im jugendlichen Alltag, aber auch ein Produkt der Kulturindustrie und ein »Diskursuniversum« mit typischen Ausdrucksformen in Sprache, Bild und Bewegung. Mit diesem Band liegt die erste umfangreiche Textsammlung über HipHop im deutschsprachigen Raum vor. Beiträge aus Cultural Studies, Ethnologie, Soziolinguistik, Pädagogik und anderen Disziplinen werden mit Essays von Szene-Autoren zusammengeführt. Allen gemeinsam ist das Verständnis von HipHop als Raum kultureller Praxis mit »globalen« Konturen und »lokalen« Aneignungsformen.     Kurzfassung: Why is English national identity so enigmatic and so elusive? Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day. He argues that the long history of the English as an imperial people has, as with other imperial people like the Russians and the Austrians, developed a sense of missionary nationalism which in the interests of unity and empire has necessitated the repression of ordinary expressions of nationalism. Professor Kumar's lively and provocative approach challenges readers to reconsider their pre-conceptions about national identity and who the English really are.
