    Abstract: "Intellectuals and the Search for National Identity in Twentieth-Century Brazil. This book discusses twentieth-century Brazilian political thought, arguing that while Rio de Janeiro intellectuals envisaged the state and the national bourgeoisie as the means to overcome dependency on foreign ideas and culture, Sao Paulo intellectuals looked to civil society and the establishment of new academic institutions in the search for national identity. Ronald H. Chilcote begins his study by outlining Brazilian intellectuals' attempt to transcend a sense of inferiority emanating from Brazilian colonialism and backwardness. Next, he traces the struggle for national identity in Rio de Janeiro through an account of how intellectuals of varying political persuasions united in search of a political ideology of national development. He then presents an analysis by Sao Paulo intellectuals on racial discrimination, social inequality, and class differentiation under early capitalism and industrialization. Lastly, the book concludes with a discussion on how Brazilian intellectuals challenged foreign thinking about development through the state and representative democratic institutions, in contrast to popular and participatory democratic practices. Ronald H. Chilcote is Professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California, Riverside. He is a founder and managing editor of the bimonthly journal Latin American Perspectives and is the author or editor of more than two dozen major books"--

    Abstract: This intriguing anthropological study investigates how the boatmen of Banaras have repositioned themselves within the traditional social organization and used their privileged position on the river to contest upper-caste and state domination.     Abstract: All people are equal, according to Thomas Jefferson, but all migrants are not. In this volume, twelve eminent scholars describe and analyse how in countries such as France, the United States, Turkey, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark distinctions were made through history between migrants and how these were justified in policies and public debates. The chapters form a triptych, addressing in three clusters the problematisation of questions such as 'who is a refugee', 'who is family' and 'what is difference'. The chapters in this volume show that these are not separate issues. They intersect in ways that vary according to countries of origin and settlement, economic climate, geopolitical situation, as well as by gender, and by class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation of the migrants

    Abstract: "In Educations in Ethnic Violence, Matthew Lange explores the effects education has on ethnic violence. Lange contradicts the widely held belief that education promotes peace and tolerance. Rather, Lange finds that education commonly contributes to aggression, especially in environments with ethnic divisions, limited resources and ineffective political institutions. He describes four ways in which organized learning spurs ethnic conflicts. Socialization in school shapes students' identities and the norms governing intercommunal relations. Education can also increase students' frustration and aggression when their expectations are not met. Sometimes, the competitive atmosphere gives students an incentive to participate in violence. Finally, education provides students with superior abilities to mobilize violent ethnic movements. Lange employs a cross-national statistical analysis with case studies of Sri Lanka, Cyprus, the Palestinian territories, India, sub-Saharan Africa, Canada and Germany"--

    Abstract: "Things did not turn out as they were supposed to. Ethnic groups were supposed to disappear. Marxists, western liberals and social scientists agreed on that for different reasons. For Marxists, the inevitable demise of capitalism would do it. Others banked on economic development and "modernization" to rendered ethnicity and other "traditional" categories irrelevant. Many intellectuals and statesmen believed that the era of ethnicity and nationalism, which had brought such violence and bloodshed to the mankind, would soon be superseded by a rational and scientific temper in the world. After the Second World War nationalism had been sufficiently discredited so that all expressions of ethnicity would be looked at askance. Yet, ethnicity persists and is one of the fundamental cleavages in many European, Asian and African societies, as well in parts of the Americas. As the example of Yugoslavia shows, national or ethnic hatreds can still be the basis for wars, the dismemberment of states, and the killing of one's neighbors, even in a region which suffered so much from ethnic wars just half a century earlier. After discussing ethnicity, we shall return to its predicted demise and why it has persisted"--
