    Abstract: "This book has been brought to life in a period where transnational solidarity and cooperation seemed to be moving backwards rather than forwards. This was among others reflected in the so called refugee crisis in Europe in 2015. After the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom in June 2016, and presidential elections in the US later the same year, the political agenda took a turn towards focusing primarily on the internal national perspective in relation to areas such as environmental protection, aid to countries in the Third World and trade with the outside world. It still remains to be seen when and how the United Kingdom will be leaving the European Union. In general, the EU has experienced a number of crises, among others an economic and financial crisis and later the refugee crisis, during the past years. These crises have challenged transnational solidarity in Europe. This development in Europe and the World stresses the question, whether and how transnational solidarity is possible. This book is motivated by these developments and discusses and attempts to answer this question. Our main presumption is that solidarity can create stability and sustainability (social, economic, environmental, peace etc.), within states, regions and globally, why it is crucial to gain more knowledge about it. Realization of the UN Sustainability Goals 2017 and 2030 go hand in hand with solidarity at both local, regional and global levels. In this work, we do of course build on earlier discussions and investigations of solidarity"--

    Abstract: "Campaigns against prostitution of young people in the United States have surged and ebbed multiple times over the last fifty years. Fighting the U.S. Youth Sex Trade: Race, Gender, and Politics examines how politically and ideologically diverse activists joined together to change perceptions and public policies on youth involvement in the sex trade over time, reframing "juvenile prostitution" of the 1970s as "commercial sexual exploitation of children" in the 1990s, and then as "domestic minor sex trafficking" in the 2000s. Based on organizational archives and interviews with activists, Baker shows that these campaigns were fundamentally shaped by the politics of gender, race and class, and global anti-trafficking campaigns. The author argues that the very frames that have made these movements so successful in achieving new laws and programs for youth have limited their ability to achieve systematic reforms that could decrease youth vulnerability to involvement in the sex trade"--

New or reformed constitutions have proliferated, protecting social, economic, and political rights. This book lays bare the political roots of this transformation, outlining a new way to understand judicial design and the very purpose of constitutional justice. Authors Daniel M. Brinks and Abby Blass use case studies drawn from nineteen Latin American countries over forty years to reveal the ideas behind the new systems of constitutional justice. They show how constitutional designers entrust their hopes and fears to dynamic governance systems, in hopes of directing the development of constitutional meaning over time"--
    Abstract: "This project started many years ago, as an article-length project on the apparent diffusion of new models of courts throughout Latin America. A paper Dan Brinks was writing for APSA dovetailed with a paper Abby Blass was writing for a graduate seminar, and the project evolved through conversations between the two authors after that. Both Abby and Dan had other projects to attend to, so the collaboration moved slowly, but we both felt it was intellectually productive. In its early stages in particular, each of the authors contributed important elements and carried out a mutual back and forth that makes it difficult to separate each author's contributions to the initial conceptualization and measurement exercises. Similarly, the basic argument evolved out of conversations between the authors, with each pushing the other to clarify and specify the argument further. Through conceiving and writing the pieces we have called "Conceptualization" (now an article in the International Journal of Constitutional Law, and largely contained in chapter 2 and the Appendix) and "Determinants" (the theory and quantitative analysis that underpins chapters 3 and 4), we collaborated fully. This is the core of the intellectual contribution of the book, and our joint work on these pieces is the principal, though not the only, reason Abby is credited as a co-author"--

    Abstract: In this innovative legal history of economic life in the Western Indian Ocean, Bishara examines the transformations of Islamic law and Islamicate commercial practices during the emergence of modern capitalism in the region. In this time of expanding commercial activity, a mélange of Arab, Indian, Swahili and Baloch merchants, planters, jurists, judges, soldiers and seamen forged the frontiers of a shared world. The interlinked worlds of trade and politics that these actors created, the shared commercial grammars and institutions that they developed and the spatial and socio-economic mobilities they engaged in endured until at least the middle of the twentieth century. This study examines the Indian Ocean from Oman to India and East Africa over an extended period of time, drawing together the histories of commerce, law and empire in a sophisticated, original and richly textured history of capitalism in the Islamic world

That year, Kuo-Taj-In (Songtao Guo) and Kagenori Wooyeno (Ueno), attended a session of the Association for the Reform and Codification of the Law of Nations, later renamed International Law Association.     Abstract: "The development of international law is conventionally understood as a history in which the main characters (states and international lawyers) and events (wars and peace conferences) are European. Arnulf Becker Lorca demonstrates how non-Western states and lawyers appropriated nineteenth-century classical thinking in order to defend new and better rules governing non-Western states' international relations. By internalizing the standard of civilization, for example, they argued for the abrogation of unequal treaties. These appropriations contributed to the globalization of international law. With the rise of modern legal thinking and a stronger international community governed by law, peripheral lawyers seized the opportunity and used the new discourse and institutions such as the League of Nations to dissolve the standard of civilization and codify non-intervention and self-determination. This book discusses how adjudicators and parties may refer to questions of jurisdiction and admissibility in order to avoid conflicting decisions on overlapping cases, excessive exercises of jurisdiction and the proliferation of litigation. It highlights an emerging, overlooked function of preliminary objections: transmission belts of procedure-regulating rules across the 'international judiciary'.     Abstract: European Labour Law explores how individual European national legal systems, in symbiosis with the European Union, produce a transnational labour law system that is distinct and genuinely European in character. Professor Brian Bercusson describes the evolution of this system, its national, transnational and global contexts and its institutional and substantive structures. The collective industrial-relations dimension of employment is examined, and the labour law of the EU as manifested in, for example, European works councils is analysed. Important subjects which have traditionally received little attention in some European labour law systems are covered, for example, the fragmentation of the workforce into atypical forms of employment. Attention is also given to the enforcement of European labour law through administrative or judicial mechanisms and the European social dialogue at intersectoral and sectoral levels. This new edition has been extensively updated, as the EU's influence on this area of social policy continues to grow

    Abstract: Vor dem Hintergrund des modernen Staatsgedankens der Aufklärung gelang es der individuellen Religionsfreiheit, sich zunächst zu einem staatlich geachteten Bürgerrecht und schließlich zu einem staatlich garantierten Menschenrecht zu entwickeln. Die Arbeit dokumentiert diese wechselhafte Entwicklung am Beispiel der norddeutschen Länder und greift dabei auf eine reiche Auswahl von Verfassungstexten, Verfassungsverhandlungen und zeitgenössischen Kommentaren zurück. Dabei werden die Einflüsse der Aufklärung und vor allem die Konstitutionalisierung des Staatswesens durch politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen in den Blick genommen, Fragen der kollektiven Religionsfreiheit berührt und schließlich die späteren reichsrechtlichen Entwicklungen nachvollzogen.     Abstract: The media environment is changing. Today in the United States, the average viewer can choose from hundreds of channels, including several twenty-four hour news channels. News is on cell phones, on iPods, and online; it has become a ubiquitous and unavoidable reality in modern society. The purpose of this 2007 book is to examine systematically, how these differences in access and form of media affect political behaviour.     Abstract: A new theory of ethnic cleansing based on the most terrible cases (colonial genocides, Armenia, the Nazi Holocaust, Cambodia, Yugoslavia, Rwanda) and cases of lesser violence (early modern Europe, contemporary India, and Indonesia). Murderous cleansing is modern, 'the dark side of democracy'. It results where the demos (democracy) is confused with the ethnos (the ethnic group). Danger arises where two rival ethno-national movements each claims 'its own' state over the same territory. Conflict escalates where either the weaker side fights because of aid from outside, or the stronger side believes it can deploy sudden, overwhelming force. Escalation is not simply the work of 'evil elites' or 'primitive peoples'. It results from complex interactions between leaders, militants, and 'core constituencies' of ethno-nationalism. Understanding this complex process helps us devise policies to avoid ethnic cleansing in the future

    Abstract: Nobel laureate Robert Fogel's compelling new study examines health, nutrition and technology over the last three centuries and beyond. Throughout most of human history, chronic malnutrition has been the norm. During the past three centuries, however, a synergy between improvements in productive technology and in human physiology has enabled humans to more than double their average longevity and to increase their average body size by over 50 per cent. Larger, healthier humans have contributed to the acceleration of economic growth and technological change, resulting in reduced economic inequality, declining hours of work and a corresponding increase in leisure time. Increased longevity has also brought increased demand for health care. Professor Fogel argues that health care should be viewed as the growth industry of the twenty-first century and systems of financing it should be reformed. His book will be essential reading for all those interested in economics, demography, history and health care policy.

    Abstract: Since so few people appear knowledgeable about public affairs, one might question whether collective policy preferences revealed in opinion surveys accurately convey the distribution of voices and interests in a society. This study, the first comprehensive treatment of the relationship between knowledge, representation, and political equality in opinion surveys, suggests some surprising answers. Knowledge does matter, and the way it is distributed in society can cause collective preferences to reflect disproportionately the opinions of some groups more than others. Sometimes collective preferences seem to represent something like the will of the people, but frequently they do not. Sometimes they rigidly enforce political equality in the expression of political viewpoints, but often they do not. The primary culprit is not any inherent shortcoming in the methods of survey research. Rather, it is the limited degree of knowledge held by ordinary citizens about public affairs. Accounting for these factors can help better appreciate thepossibilities for using opinion polls to represent the people's voice

    Abstract: Government interventions in media markets are often criticized for preventing audiences from getting the media products they want. A free press is often asserted to be essential for democracy. The first point is incorrect and the second is inadequate as a policy guide. Part I of this book shows that unique aspects of media products prevent markets from providing for audience desires. Part II shows that four prominent, but different, theories of democracy lead to different conceptions of good journalistic practice, media policy, and proper constitutional principles. Part II makes clear that the choice among democratic theories is crucial for understanding what should be meant by free press. Part III explores international free trade in media products. Contrary to the dominant American position, it shows that Parts I and II's economic and democratic theory justify deviations from free trade in media products
