Abstract: "This book presents social development in children through the language of preference management. Conversational excerpts garnered from around the world trace how parents talk about preferences, how infants' and children's emergent language conveys their preferences, how children themselves are impacted by others' preferences, and how they, in turn, influence the preferences of adults and peers. The language of preferences is used to crack into altruism, aggression, and morality, which are ways of coming to terms with other people's preferences. Behind the scenes is a cognitive engine that uses transformational thought - conducting temporal, imaginal, and mental transformations - to figure out other people's preferences and to find more sophisticated means of outmaneuvering others by persuading them and playing with one's own mind and other people's minds when preferences are blocked"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Child Development for Child Care and Protection Workers is a classic text for students and practitioners in the child care and protection field which summarises important current thinking on child development and applies it directly to practice. The book covers key issues such as resilience and vulnerability and the impact of protective or adverse environments. Different stages of development (infancy, school age and adolescence) are discussed, and attachment theory is used to offer insights into the impact of abuse and neglect on development. A key feature is the inclusion of case studies and

Abstract: Their haunting images appear on millions of television screens and in newspapers worldwide: Children huddled in refugee camps and exposed to violence in war zones. Children burdened by the emotional and physical scars of violent homes and communities. Children exploited by crass commercialism around the world and around the corner. Too many children are confronting life-threatening risks and experiencing trauma. Abstract: What constitutes a 'normal' child? Throughout the nineteenth century public health and paediatrics played a leading role in the image and conception of children. By the twentieth century psychology had moved to the forefront, transforming our thinking and understanding. Andre Turmel investigates these transformations both from the perspective of the scientific observation of children (public hygiene, paediatrics, psychology and education) and from a public policy standpoint (child welfare, health policy, education and compulsory schooling). Using detailed historical accounts from Britain, the USA and France, Turmel studies how historical sequential development and statistical reasoning have led to a concept of what constitutes a 'normal' child and resulted in a form of standardization by which we monitor children. He shows how western society has become a child-centred culture and asks whether we continue to base parenting and teaching on a view of children that is no longer appropriate

Abstract: "Synthesizing insights from psychology and philosophy with his own wide-ranging, first-hand experiences around the world, Dr. James Garbarino takes readers on a journey into the dark side of human experience as it is lived by children. Dr. Garbarino intertwines a discussion of children's material and spiritual needs with a detailed examination of the clinical knowledge and experiential wisdom required to understand and meet complex developmental needs. Fusing anecdotal observations, empirical evidence, and an ecological perspective, he reveals a path to ensuring the fundamental human rights of all children: the right to safety, to equality, to economic parity, and to a meaningful life."--BOOK JACKET.

The authors discuss the complexities of child development, providing a critique of alternative perspectives of research and notions of development. They provide a number of case studies following researchers in early childhood as they move from a developmental approach to a cultural-historical framework for observing and planning for young children. The chapters provide a solid framework for understanding the foundations of this approach; Address the importance of viewing research as an interactive technique; Offer guidance on how to collect and interpret material; Show how to make observations of and interviews with children, within a dialectical research approach; Present examples of how to write and present findings using this technique. The book is rich with examples of how to undertake specific methods, such as surveys, experiments, case studies, digital video observations, interviews, and children as researchers. "Studying Children" is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students working in the field of Early and Middle Childhood at both undergraduate and postgraduate level

Abstract: This volume is the result of over twenty years of therapeutic interventions with families within the Tavistock Clinic's Under Fives Service. It describes in detail the process of understanding young children's communications and behaviour and the dynamics of family relationships within the consulting room in a lively, accessible style. It covers common themes in work with young children such as disruptive, angry behaviour, separation and sleep difficulties, and problems in the parent/couple relationship. This book is essential reading for all early years professionals hoping to gain a greater understanding of the technique, observational skills and theory which underlie a psychodynamic approach to work with the under fives

Abstract: "The contents of Human Development Theories are based on the observation that the human perceptual system and a camera are both bound by the same limitation. Neither the camera nor the person can focus on everything at once. The camera, in order to portray a panoramic landscape in all its detail, must take a succession of individual snapshots, each featuring a particular center of interest. The person, in order to comprehend a culture in all its complexities, must perceive the culture from a succession of vantage points. Throughout the book, those vantage points are provided by 25 theories of human development. Each theory is intended to delineate a particular aspect of culture, thereby contributing toward a broad understanding of what cultures are all about. The examples of cultures are drawn from all parts of the world. Thus, Human Development Theories is a demonstration of the value of diverse viewpoints toward culture."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: "This book describes the findings of a long-term, comprehensive longitudinal study conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research in Munich from 1984 to 1993. The major goal of the study was to analyze developmental changes in the cognitive, social, and personality domain and to explore possible interrelationships in developmental changes across domains. A sample of about 200 children was first tested in 1984 when they were almost 4 years old and first entering German kindergarten. Children's cognitive, social, and personality development was followed up on a regular basis (2-3 times a year) for about 9 years (until 1993). Data analyses focused on both the issue of continuity versus discontinuity of the developmental function in the various domains and on the issue of stability or variability in interindividual differences in developmental change. The study is unique in that developmental changes in several important domains were assessed simultaneously over a period of almost 10 years."--BOOK JACKET.
