Abstract: What does it mean to be British? To answer this, Multiracial Britishness takes us to an underexplored site of Britishness - the former British colony of Hong Kong. Vivian Kong asks how colonial hierarchies, the racial and cultural diversity of the British Empire, and global ideologies complicate the meaning of being British. Using multi-lingual sources and oral history, Kong traces the experiences of multiracial residents in 1910-45 Hong Kong. Guiding us through Hong Kong's global networks, and the colony's co-existing exclusive and cosmopolitan social spaces, this book uncovers the long history of multiracial Britishness. Kong argues that Britishness existed in the colony in multiple, hyphenated forms - as a racial category, but also as privileges, a means of survival, and a form of cultural and national belonging. This book offers us an important reminder that multiracial inhabitants of the British Empire were just as active in the making of Britishness as the British state and white Britons.

Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. It includes constructive ideas and approaches that seek to ensure that our collective digital future is determined through human agency

Abstract: In 1864, the German jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs coined the term "urning" as a word for same-sex attracted men. Over the next few years, first anonymously and then publicly, he campaigned against the public persecution of these men. In response, some of his readers took on the urning terminology for themselves and engaged with Ulrichs to negotiate the finer points of their new identities. In Urning, Douglas Pretsell writes of same-sex attracted men in German-speaking Europe who used the neologism "urning" as a personal identity in the late nineteenth century. This was in the period before other terms such as "homosexual" gained currency. Drawing on letters, memoirs, and psychiatric case studies, the book uses first-hand autobiographical accounts to map out the contours of urning society. Urning further explores individual accounts of some urnings who attempted their own forms of activism to transform the world around them , even though they had no formal organization. As the century drew to a close, the efforts of Ulrichs and his urning followers paved the way for the launch of the world's first homosexual rights organization. Urning argues that the men who called themselves urnings were self-identified, self-constructed agents of their own destinies

Abstract: How did men cope with sexual health issues in early modern England? This vivid history investigates how sexual, reproductive, and genitourinary conditions were understood between 1580 and 1740. Drawing on medical sources and personal testimonies, it reveals how men responded to bouts of ill health and their relationships with the medical practitioners tasked with curing them. In doing so, this study restores men's health to medical histories of reproduction, demonstrating how men's sexual self-identity was tied to their health. Charting genitourinary conditions across the life cycle, the book illustrates how fertility and potency were key to medical understandings of men's health. Men utilized networks of care to help them with ostensibly embarrassing and shameful conditions like hernias, venereal disease, bladder stones, and testicular injuries. The book thus offers a historical voice to modern calls for men to be alert to, and open about, their own bodily health.

Abstract: Exploring models of hope that are expressed through critique, persistence, vision, and holy inspiration in the Hebrew Bible and that find continued resonance in the traditions of Jesus, Brueggemann locates in the Scriptures a tenacious shalom that breaks through the rocky ground of struggle and suffering. This gritty, wide-awake hope is willing to be dissatisfied and to cry out against the oppressor, while reaching forward to imagine new alternatives with creativity and freedom, to bring into reality a social order that benefits and cares for all. Questions for reflection are included at the end of each chapter.

Abstract: Social Justice Case Studies: Interdisciplinary and Non-Traditional Interdisciplinary Approaches provides individuals interested in social justice the ability to discuss and engage in interdisciplinary and non-traditional interdisciplinary team processes. Using case studies that address a range of social justice issues, Dr. Cheryl Green explores the roles of interdisciplinary team members and how they can positively or negatively impact clients' outcomes. Chapters discuss approaches to management of complex client cases, as well as ethical dilemmas, facilitation of family meetings, discharge planning, cultural consideration, and burnout prevention. Dr. Green considers case studies involving intimate partner violence between a same-sex couple, a college student's experience of Espiritismo, counselling and support for women facing unplanned pregnancies, support for a transgender client undergoing familial conflict, and the recognition of "fright" in a male of Caribbean descent experiencing depression and anxiety. Important, timely, and topical, Social Justice Case Studies: Interdisciplinary and Non-Traditional Interdisciplinary Approaches is an accessible read for those interested in challenging the issues that impact social justice across a variety of settings.

Abstract: Scholars in the Sociology of Race have extensively researched public policy sectors such as housing, taxation, and immigration. However, media policy research has often failed to effectively engage with the critical concept of racialization, driven instead by political and economic perspectives. Racializing Media Policy fills this gap in the sociological, communications, and media studies literatures with its focus on the racialized processes that construct media policy work in the United States. With research that merges subfields of racialization and media policy, explores the US broadcasting policy, and examines racialization without integration and mediating structural challenges, the authors delve into multiple scenarios of racialization in policy. The chapters offer theoretical frameworks and case studies to consider the ways that media policy spaces are embedded with ideologies and praxes surrounding race. Racializing Media Policy contributes to a wider understanding of the role of policy work in the media systems, particularly by examining the ways that race is embedded within those structures. This unique perspective makes the volume an important read for scholars across the Sociology and Media Studies fields, in addition to providing critical context for policymakers.

Abstract: How is public morality understood in the twenty-first century, and what effect does this have on legislation and social policy? Public Morality and the Culture Wars is a strictly non-polemical analysis of the intellectual and ideological conflicts at the heart of the 'culture wars'. Taking debates on human nature, sexuality, gender identity, abortion, censorship, and free speech, Bryan Fanning offers an accessible analysis of modern public morality, identifying a 'triple divide' between conservative, liberal and progressive viewpoints. A nuanced analysis of 'culture wars' now dividing Anglophone democracies is badly needed. Public Morality and the Culture Wars makes a vibrant and invigorating contribution to the debate, essential reading for scholars and students in the fields of social policy, law, politics, philosophy, sociology and social justice.

Abstract: Starting in the nineteenth century in Germany, colourful military uniforms became a locus for various queer male fantasies, fostering an underground sexual economy of male prostitution as well as a political project to exploit the army's prestige for queer emancipation. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism. Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, Uniform Fantasies uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gay men in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity.

Abstract: The 21st century has brought many changes to peacebuilding, armed conflicts, and social movements. Organizations and scholars alike have developed new techniques for bridging cultural divides and enhancing democracy and respect for human rights. Moreover, technological changes have significantly altered conflict spaces. Methodological Advances in Research on Social Movements, Conflict, and Change explores methods for studying contentious politics in the context of these broader social changes. Contributors advance methodological scholarship by developing new tools, discussing new sources of data and their relative value, and addressing controversies and ethical issues that have emerged in the process of collecting or analyzing data. Acknowledging how more movements are using a wider range of tactics to influence a rapidly changing, deeply interconnected world, Methodological Advances in Research on Social Movements, Conflict, and Change appeals to scholars interested in how the study of social movements, peace, and conflict has developed and adapted to keep pace with ongoing socio-political and technological change.

Abstract: Examines the role of the American Revolution in the everyday lives of womenPatriarchal forces of law, finance, and social custom restricted women's rights and agency in revolutionary America. Yet women in this period exploited these confines, transforming constraints into vehicles of female empowerment. Through a close reading of thousands of legislative, judicial, and institutional pleas across seventy years of history in three urban centers, Jacqueline Beatty illustrates the ways in which women in the revolutionary era asserted their status as dependents, demanding the protections owed to them as the assumed subordinates of men. In so doing, they claimed various forms of aid and assistance, won divorce suits, and defended themselves and their female friends in the face of patriarchal assumptions about their powerlessness. Ultimately, women in the revolutionary era were able to advocate for themselves and express a relative degree of power not in spite of their dependent status, but because of it.Their varying degrees of success in using these methods, however, was contingent on their race, class, and socio-economic status, and the degree to which their language and behavior conformed to assumptions of Anglo-American femininity. In Dependence thus exposes the central paradoxes inherent in American women's social, legal, and economic positions of dependence in the Revolutionary era, complicating binary understandings of power and weakness, of agency and impotence, and of independence and dependence. Significantly, the American Revolution provided some women with the language and opportunities in which to claim old rights-the rights of dependents-in new ways. Most importantly, In Dependence shows how women's coming to consciousness as rights-bearing individuals laid the groundwork for the activism and collective petitioning efforts of later generations of American feminists

Abstract: Throughout the 19th century, revolutionary movements united intellectuals, artists, dissidents, and significant segments of the population in joint crusades in the name of justice or liberation against empires and aristocratic elites, often across class, religious, race and national lines. Duty to Revolt takes the Greek Revolution as a foundational historical departure point to investigate historical continuities and discontinuities in transnational and commemorative aspects of revolutionary wars. This edited collection provides an innovative and comprehensive contribution to the study of historical revolutions and their commemoration, as well as contemporary protests and uprisings, and how they are communicated today in everyday networked media. Duty to Revolt is the first work of its kind to take an interdisciplinary approach across historical time on this subject and bringing together leading and emerging scholars in several fields, merging history and political science with digital media and communication studies.

Abstract: Engaging with the complex natures of space and belonging, Migrations and Diasporas provides a means for understanding the plight of migrants and diasporas as they move through a world divided between those committed to welcoming them into their communities and those who perceive them as a problem or threat. Split into two parts, chapters address a range of critical issues, including the inclusive practices of both state and non-state actors, practices of exclusion expressing xenophobia and nativist policies that can jeopardize migrant safety, and the geographies and spaces that can restore lost histories, as well as help migrants negotiate new boundaries. Capturing institutional and organized civil society practices, the authors build an understanding of the struggles and challenges migrants and diasporas face, including climate change, assimilation, and complex legal systems. Grounded in a rich interdisciplinarity, contributors bring together perspectives from international relations, political science, law, philosophy, development economics, peace and conflict studies, forest and food sciences, linguistics, pedagogy, and human geography, as well as contexts across the United States, Australia, Europe, Honduras, Canada, New Zealand, Lebanon, Ukraine, Syria, and Armenia, from the Trump era to the Rwandan genocide. Advocating for a more welcoming world involves respecting the human dignity and fundamental rights of all individuals, regardless of their place of origin or immigration status. This perspective offers a powerful insight into the dynamics of social justice across borders.

Abstract: This volume contains an Open Access chapter. Recent decades have seen an unprecedented expansion and diversification of sports gambling markets. Enabled by widespread access to the internet, advances in smartphone technology and the liberalisation of gambling advertising, gambling companies have strategically invested in the alignment of this practise with culturally embedded sporting activities, leading some to characterise these developments as the 'gamblification' of sports. Bringing together leading scholars from across the world, Gambling and Sports in a Global Age provides a landmark sociological collection on sports gambling from global perspectives. Anchored in a historical sociological context, chapters trace the global transformation of sports gambling amid wider processes of techno-capitalist expansion and the commercialisation of sport before exploring the differential factors that shape the relationship between sport and gambling in unique societal contexts. Contributors examine emerging issues in sports gambling, including the ethics of gambling sponsorship in sport, athlete rights, the risk of harms to youth and the future of sports fandom. Gambling and Sports in a Global Age demonstrates the importance of sociology in understanding sports gambling in a global age, establishing a much-needed scholarly platform with which to generate theoretically informed interventions in research and policymaking. Through an integrated global approach, the contributors shed critical light on centrally relevant sociological themes, providing convenient access to a diverse array of contextual insights and generating new questions for an emerging generation of sociologists.

Abstract: Since the 1990s, the West has seen a significant increase in women entering the tattoo industry as professional artists. Examining this kind of work through a sociological and feminist lens, Tattooing and the Gender Turn explores the experiences of women tattoo artists in what has historically been a male-dominated industry to reveal how tattooing has undergone a 'gender turn' and a subsequent shift in gender relations. Drawing on interviews with women and queer tattoo artists from across the US, UK and Australia, Emma Beckett conceptualises the tattoo industry as a source of employment and labour in addition to exploring how it operates as a sub-culture. Highlighting how women artists negotiate gendered capital and gendered labour amidst industry hierarchies and demands on authenticity, Beckett uses a gendered lens to explore and problematise the industry as an often unequal place of work and employment. Chapters also explore how women artists are using online platforms to disrupt and challenge the problematic aspects of the tattoo industry, disrupting harmful behaviours and initiating change. Putting women artists and their experiences at the centre of its gaze, Tattooing and the Gender Turn appeals to those interested in subcultures, employment and labour, as well as other male-dominated industries where women have to navigate and negotiate the terms of their femininity in order to succeed in their chosen career.

Abstract: Fractal Leadership investigates leadership construction in social movements afforded (or intensified) by algorithm-based flows of information and viral affectivity. The book illustrates how a somewhat amorphous structure is replicated from an intimate, localised community level, all the way up to the global level with swift, almost breath-taking repetitions over and over again, from one scale to another, thus carrying new forms of leaders to sudden public mass-following, but just as quickly sweeping them away. Including original primary research with fieldwork from Extinction Rebellion and Black Lives Matter in juxtaposition with archival research of the New Left movements of the 1960s, Karatzogianni and Matthews explore how the digital transformation of temporality impacts on the ideologisation process, movement organisational structure, as well as the implicated biolabour process, culminating on the fractalisation of movement leadership and its devastating implications for class formation, and the authoritarian turn in global politics. Fractal Leadership serves as a point of reference for those interested in tracing the development of leadership in social movements from the 1960s to today.

Abstract: High in the eastern Himalayan foothills, people had a unique vantage point on the British Empire. The Mizo Discovery of the British Raj presents a history of Mizoram in Northeast India told from historical Indigenous perspectives of encounters with empire from the 1890s to the 1920s. Based on a wide range of research and enriched by sources newly digitised by the author through the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme, Kyle Jackson sheds new light on the complex and violent processes of how and why diverse populations of highland clans in the Indo-Burmese borderlands came to redefine themselves as Christian Mizos. By using historical Indigenous concepts and logics to approach early twentieth-century imperial encounters, Jackson guides readers into a decolonial history of Northeast India, demonstrating the value of thinking not just about the histories of colonized peoples and concepts but also with them.

Abstract: 〈i〉Youth Movements and Generational Politics, 19th-21st Centuries〈/i〉 by Richard and Margaret Braungart is a collection of nineteen of their previously published research articles on youthful political activism, generational conflict and social change. After assessing 1960s' student groups on the political left, right and center, generations of youth movement activity are identified in each world region-from the first student movement in Germany in 1815 to the global surge in youth unrest and demonstrations in the twenty-first century. Representing more than fifty years of research, youth movements and generational politics are explored from historical, generational and global perspectives. As a collection, these articles are theoretically grounded, empirically based, interdisciplinary and comparative. Exploring youth movements at individual, group, societal and international levels, a variety of methodological approaches for studying youth activism are illustrated. In a concluding chapter, the Braungarts update youth movement activity in the twenty-first century and discuss how their previous decades of international research informs the global rise in youthful mobilization over politics. The trends and changes in youth unrest and generational politics are assessed now and into the future.

Abstract: Though algorithms are chosen to eliminate bias in the Learning Health Systems (LHS) that support medical decision making, we are left with unconscious bias present in data due to lack of representation for marginalized populations, particularly in palliative care. Medical practitioners often lack historical foundations for decision making for patients in underrepresented populations, which lead to palliative patients being subjected to uneven quality of care and an absence of treatment goals due to a lack of advocacy and other challenges. Data Ethics and Digital Privacy in Learning Health Systems for Palliative Medicine reviews the ethical foundations that drive our approach, data collection (public data, private data and data privacy), data stratification methodologies to support marginalized and intersectional populations, analysis techniques, algorithmic development to maintain privacy, survival analysis, result interpretation, LHS development, and LHS implementation. These methodologies address the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which clearly establishes the standard to protect digitally held health care data. Informing both research and practice, Data Ethics and Digital Privacy in Learning Health Systems for Palliative Medicine brings attention to an important issue that lies at the intersection of medicine, science, and digital technology and communication.

Exploring how the uprising, triggered by a debt crisis, relates to deeper problems of democracy, civil war and development, Janaka Biyanwila challenges numerous misunderstandings about the protests and uncovers how global financial markets and platform economies contributed to the upheaval. Locating the crisis within Global North-South dynamics, Biyanwila outlines how market-driven economic growth strategies restrain public involvement in decision making while asserting ethno-centric collective identities and hypermasculine cultures. Framing citizenship as well as justice in terms of cultural recognition, economic redistribution and political representation, chapters foreground the role of democratic social movements that encourage artistic engagement and collective learning as central for renewing citizenship as well as democracy. Reimagining development that embeds Global Production Networks within local communities and rethinking democracy across multiple tiers of governance, Biyanwila concludes by shifting his narrative to a broader focus on the Global South, and South Asia specifically. Fusing the regional with the global, Debt Crisis and Popular Social Protest in Sri Lanka widens its perspective from a distinct, national moment to an international interdependency with the power to ripple across every corner of the globe.

Abstract: At a time of significant local, national, and international change, in which children are already actively involved, it seems not only right but necessary that we should be seeking to further our knowledge and understanding of what informs and shapes meaningful and effective practice for and with children. Such research has implications across the spaces that children and adults share whether that is at school, at home, in the law courts, in health care through to local, national, and international platforms for social action. Establishing Child Centred Practice in a Changing World, Part B extends the conversation to connect research and practices in a changing world. This edition examines children's voices in relation to research methodologies, in particular co-production, as well as extending conversations around child centred practice from forest schools to the home through to community change initiatives that further understandings of what it means to be a learner and an advocate. Authors from around the world offer a range of perspectives to advance transformational practice in a changing world. Furthering dialogues around the applied relevance of key principles in childhood studies, this diverse edited collection is an important contribution to the fields of education, sociology, childcare and youth policy and practice.

Abstract: In 2015, Germany agreed to accept a million Syrian refugees. The country had become an epicenter of global migration and one of Europe's most diverse countries. But was this influx of migration new to Germany? In this volume, Jan Plamper charts the groups and waves of post-1945 mobility to Germany. This is a narrative history of multicultural Germany told through life-stories. It explores the experiences of the 12.5 million German expellees from Eastern Europe who arrived at the end of the Second World War; the 14 million 'guest workers' from Italy and Turkey who turned West Germany into an economic powerhouse; the GDR's Vietnamese labor migrants; and the 2.3 million Germans and 230,000 Jews who came from the Soviet Union after 1987.

Abstract: Dubai's audacious architecture and photographic locations attract social media 'influencers' from around the world. How has Dubai, once a small fishing village on the edge of a desert, morphed into a hyper-modern backdrop for this global phenomenon? How can we understand these interactions as our relationships with digital technologies undergo radical change? This timely research-based study reveals how micro-celebrities and Dubai's visible economies influence the evolution of the Emirate. Taking a cutting edge post-digital approach, underpinned by cultural studies and social media theory, Social Media Influencing in The City of Likes presents a series of unique case studies and demonstrates how Dubai is considered not only an illusion of unlimited indulgence but also a city dependent on the emerging infrastructure of visible economies, visual attractions, and 'Instagrammable' locations. Evaluating the cases of multiple influencers, from local to transnational content creators, Hurley reveals how residents, non-citizens and migrant workers surviving as influencers in the city of 'likes.' Providing a much-needed de-Westernising perspectives of Dubai's social media influencing industry within the broader context of global platform capitalism, Social Media Influencing in The City of Likes offers an important contribution to the field of social media through illustrating visible economies in a city circuited by social media influencing.

Abstract: The social conception of bodies as mixed race provides insight into the operation of the external racial gaze within 'multicultural' Canada. Drawing on multi-staged life story interviews with mixed race adults, Mixed Race Life Stories: The Multiracializing Gaze in Canada examines the lived experience of the racial gaze and provides a new contribution to the Critical Mixed Race Studies field as the first to take a life story approach to mixed race identity. Building on the conceptualization of multiracialization and the racial gaze, Mixed Race Life Stories: The Multiracializing Gaze in Canada combines critical race and life course perspectives to produce new theoretical insights on the multiracializing gaze. Jillian Paragg details how mixed race people's experiences must be understood within the unfolding history of the Canadian settler state, and the ways that particular configurations of their experiences across their life course illuminate the operations and mechanisms of the racial gaze. Framing a new theoretical analysis in a field with limited data, Mixed Race Life Stories: The Multiracializing Gaze in Canada builds an understanding of the affective lived experiences of mixed race people, the different ways they are racialized and how that may impact a politics of mixed race moving forward.

Abstract: In a time of ongoing global instability and the emergence of new fault lines of social inequality generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the rights of children and young people have been thrown into sharp relief. From uncertain futures arising from the climate crisis to concerns about regressive and reactionary politics to widespread experiences of harassment, abuse and violence, young people and their advocates are mobilising for social change and making their voices heard. Across a variety of topics that engage diverse theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, Childhood, Youth and Activism: Demands for Rights and Justice from Young People and their Advocates offers a rich exploration of the dynamics between children, youth, activism, and advocacy. The chapters investigate the forms of agency expressed by young people themselves, the hope embodied in social movements, and the centrality of activism and advocacy for creating more hopeful and just futures. Considering the meanings of activism by and for children and young people in the twenty-first century, this edited collection is a valuable resource for scholars, educators and practitioners interested in the intersections of childhood and youth studies, activism and movements for social change.

Abstract: In societies around the globe, couples are increasingly opting to live together without going through the formal and legal complications of marriage. Given the tremendous diversity in cohabiting couples, as well as the increasing prominence of this form of intimate relationships, Cohabitation and the Evolving Nature of Intimate and Family Relationships provides a more thorough comprehension of the structures, effects, and intimate practice of cohabitation around the world. As a richly edited collection, the chapters delve into a wide array of topics including transitions into cohabitation, parenting and parental roles, division of domestic labor among cohabitors, sharing of economic resources, elderly cohabitors, legal complications of cohabitation, intimate partner violence, interconnections between cohabitation and marriage, sex and sexuality, assortative mating among cohabiting partners, premarital cohabitation and its consequences, relationship dissolution, gender ideologies, changing patterns of cohabitation, cohabitation and remarriage, and parental cohabitation and child development, among others. This is compelling reading for scholars of family research for better comprehending the structural, affectional, and other characteristics of cohabitation around the world.

Abstract: David R. Maines (1940-2021), one of the most important sociological scholars of the 20th and 21st centuries, constructed a vast area of research to advance the field of symbolic interactionism during his career. Highlighting the significance of Maines' works in symbolic interactionism, Festschrift in Honor of David R. Maines documents his most celebrated areas of scholarship, including social structure, narrative sociology, social interaction, dialectic perspective, temporality, and mesostructure. Including stories from individuals who knew Maines via kinship, friendship, or professional relationship, the chapters conclude with two new empirical studies to reflect Maines' interest in continually advancing the field with cutting-edge research. The collection also features a list of Maines' selected works for further reading to guide other symbolic interactionists in their research endeavors. Volume 57 of Studies in Symbolic Interaction is a source of both consolation and celebration for those who knew David R. Maines, as well as those who have just begun to discover his inspiring work.

Abstract: Democratic societies thrive when citizens actively and critically engage with new ideas, developments and claims to truth. Not only can such practices result in more effective choice-making, but they can also lead to widespread support for progressive beliefs, such as social justice. With Western societies in the midst of environmental, social and political crises, it seems more pertinent than ever that citizens become "ideas-informed'. Presenting concepts from academia, industry, and practice, The Ideas-Informed Society closes the gap between the ideal of the ideas-informed society and the current reality. By exploring what it means to be ideas-informed and the benefits for both individuals and society, the chapters conceive what an ideal ideas-informed society would look like, what are the key ingredients of an ideas-informed society, and how to make it happen.
