Abstract: 'Clock time', which denotes particular ways of valuing temporal duration, is typically associated with monetary worth or labour. From this follows so-called thrifty attitudes towards the passing of time, which is construed as a resource that can be 'wasted' or 'saved'. This title, however, presents comparative case studies of clock time in Fiji and Finland to reconsider the other values that it is capable of expressing, beyond monetary worth. By comparing two such dissimilar case studies - and drawing on examples as diverse as the Fijian hospitality industry and peripheral waiting and Finnish academic time management - Erasaari foregrounds time's capacity to act as a sign and measure of other values.

Abstract: The dual traumas of colonialism and slavery are still felt by Native Americans and African Americans as victims of ongoing violence toward people of color today. In this book, John Corrigan calls attention to the trauma experienced by white Americans as perpetrators of this violence. By tracing memory's role in American Christianity, Corrigan shows how contemporary white Christian nationalism is motivated by a widespread effort to forget the role race plays in American society. White trauma, Corrigan argues, courses through American culture like an underground river that sometimes bursts forth into brutality, terrorism, and insurrection. Tracing the river to its source is a necessary first step toward healing.

Observing that anthropology is a progressive discipline with a pessimistic attitude towards progress, Daniel Reichman explains the contested meanings of progress in Brazil and explores how anthropologists and others can define this concept more generally. He investigates how any society can separate 'progress' from plain old change and, if change is constantly happening all around us, how and why certain events get lifted out of a normal timeframe and into a mythic narrative of progress.

Abstract: The last few decades have seen an increase in the migration of ageing people from richer Northern and Western countries to poorer Southern and Eastern countries. This book seeks to understand the motivation behind retirement migration and how precarity in later life contributes to this trend. Drawing on accounts of retirees from different nations, the book examines how welfare policies in their home country versus their country of migration shape their experiences of migration. It shows how ageism impacts social precarity across different social classes, and across economic, social and health dimensions. It also evaluates how local and global systems of inequalities influence retirement migrants' experience, providing both opportunities and constraints that differ across countries.

Abstract: This text provides an ethnographic account of how Pentecostalism expands globally. It examines the rise of the Australian megachurch Hillsong, its global spread, and its appeal to young middle-class Brazilians. It shows that Hillsong's adoption of the Cool Christianity style through music, digital media, branding, and celebrity culture, elicits excitement, pleasure, and pride amongst its expanding global following. For Brazilian middle-class youth, the church also gives them a sense of cosmopolitan belonging to a Christian community located in the Global North. By joining Hillsong, they seek to distinguish themselves from the impoverished followers of Brazilian Pentecostal churches and their values.

Abstract: Since the 19th century, Arab migration from the Ottoman Empire to Latin America and Latin American travel to the Arab world has created transcontinental routes - and in the late 20th century, the translation of Latin American classics into Arabic flourished in the Arab world. Drawing on Latin American and Arabic novels, travelogues, memoirs, short stories and chronicles from Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq, Tahia Abdel Nasser shows how cultural exchange between Latin America and the Arab world cemented historical and diplomatic ties.

Abstract: In this book, Olukunle Olowabi explores the divergent developmental consequences of nations in the Global South that were shaped on the one hand by forced settlement, where European colonists established large-scale agricultural plantations with enslaved African labour, and on the other by colonial occupation. He shows that most forced settlement colonies emerged from European domination with higher levels of education attainment, greater postcolonial democratization, and favourable human development outcomes relative to Global South countries that emerged from colonial occupation after 1945.

Abstract: Archival research into policing and surveillance of migrant women illuminates pressing contemporary issues. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labelled 'undesirable' by the French colonial police and society in the early 20th century. These 'undesirables' were often women travelling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of colour, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, 'Undesirable' illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

Abstract: Disabled people report high levels of harassment worldwide, often based on intersectional characteristics such as race, gender and age. However, while #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter have highlighted ongoing experiences of sexual and racial harassment, disability harassment has received little attention. This book focuses on legal measures to combat disability harassment at work. It sets disability harassment in its international context, including its human rights framework, and confronts the lack of empirical information by evaluating the Irish legal framework in practice. Abstract: A new view of 20th-century US social movements, 'Rough Draft of History' examines how national newspapers covered social movements and the organizations driving them. Edwin Amenta and Neal Caren identify hundreds of movement organizations, from the Women's Christian Temperance Union to Occupy Wall Street, and document their treatment in the news. In doing so, Amenta and Caren provide an alternative account of US history from below, as it was refracted through journalistic lenses. Iconic organizations in the women's rights, African American civil rights, and environmental movements gained substantial media attention. But so too did now-forgotten groups, such as the German-American Alliance, Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, and Peace and Freedom Party. Amenta and Caren show why some organizations made big news while others did not.

These protests were large and dramatic, and had an outsized impact. But, they do not tell the whole story of this wave of contention. 'Keeping the March Alive' follows thirty-five progressive groups founded after the Women's March across ten cities from Amarillo and Atlanta to Pasadena and Pittsburgh to tell the whole story of how some social movement organizations survive and thrive while others falter.

It investigates how people within the Balkans view their others, how the West regards the Balkans, and how emigrants from the Balkans reflect upon their experiences as members of cosmopolitan diasporic communities. Highlighting latent tensions between centre and periphery and furthering the discussion of racialization related to the Balkans, the collection exposes contradictions in social values, which give rise to national anxieties.

Abstract: Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork and interviews with activists, this book tells the story of postapartheid South Africa from the perspective of Johannesburg's impoverished urban Black neighbourhoods. Nearly three decades after South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy, widespread protests and xenophobic attacks suggest that not all is well in the once-celebrated 'rainbow nation'. Marcel Paret traces rising protests back to the process of democratisation and racial inclusion. This process dangled the possibility of change but preserved racial inequality and economic insecurity, prompting residents to use militant protests to express their deep sense of betrayal and to demand recognition and community development.
