    Abstract: Allmählich beginnt man zu erkennen, daß die moderne Wirkungsgeschichte des Islams wie kaum ein anderes Phänomen dazu beigetragen hat, die Grundlagen der westlichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Frage zu stellen. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt.     Abstract: Analysts are generally agreed - dramatic changes are unfolding in the character of work, managerial authority, and the employment relationship. However, there is little agreement as to precisely how such changes are reshaping people's working lives, the nature of their careers, and the distribution of opportunity among members of different classes, genders, and ethnic groups. Confronting these issues head on, this text focuses on a series of critical questions concerned with the restructuring of work under capitalism at the beginning of the 21st century. The papers collected here address a wide array of workplace settings, from traditional manufacturing settings to "knowledge work" in high tech and university contexts. The volume devotes attention to the impact of production concepts in various national settings, ranging from Germany to Mexico and Australia. Among other themes, the volume also examines the linkage between gender inequality and efforts to establish innovative, "flexible" forms of work organization

    Abstract: Volume five of this expanding series of books draws together a collection of papers based on a particular form of critical ethnography developed by Phil Francis Carspecken and his colleagues at the University of Houston. Each chapter is based on a unique field project conducted in the Houston area which was planned and conducted by its particular author, but each chapter shares and exemplifies a common methodological theory. The Houston version of critical ethnography attempts to deal with some challenges from certain feminist and postmodern writers about the validity of qualitative research, and the authors argue that clear methods and standards exist for conducting qualitative studies such that well supported findings may be distinguished from highly questionable ones. Following an initial chapter by Carspecken which outlines the theory and methodology adopted, are seven case studies which cover such topics as multicultural literature, the supervision of teachers in training, school restructuring, charter schools, and race and standardized testing

    Abstract: Japanese Frames of Mind addresses two main questions in light of a collection of research conducted by both Japanese and American researchers at Harvard University: What challenge does Japanese psychology offer to Western psychology? Will the presumed universals of human nature discovered by Western psychology be reduced to a set of 'local psychology' among many in a world of unpredicted variations? The chapters provide a wealth of new data and perspectives related to aspects of Japanese child development, moral reasoning and narratives, schooling and family socialization, and adolescent experiences. By placing the Japanese evidence within the context of Western psychological theory and research, the book calls for a systematic reexamination of Western psychology as one psychology among many other ethnopsychologies.     Abstract: This book provides a detailed, multi-disciplinary analysis of innovation networks in a variety of organisational settings. All the contributors are employed at Aston Business School, which is one of the UK's foremost institutions in terms of both teaching and research. The book illustrates the way in which innovation networks are formed and sustained in a variety of organisational settings: the public sector, public-private collaboration, national policy level, inter-organisational credit links, as well as the more traditional focus on manufacturing firms. The strength of the network approach is that it encourages detailed analyses of the dyadic links which must be mobilised in the innovation process. At the same time, networks provide a framework for exploring the multiple sources and pluralistic patterns of communication typical of innovatory activity. Therefore, in contrast to much of the innovation network research undertaken in recent years, the focus of this book is as much on notions of "network as method" as on "network as phenomenon"

    Abstract: Latin American market-oriented reforms along the lines of the Washington Consensus need to be supplemented by a number of social policies to achieve a more equitable society. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt.     Abstract: In Social Capital, Nan Lin explains the importance of using social connections and social relations in achieving goals. Social capital, or resources accessed through such connections and relations, is critical (along with human capital, or what a person or organization actually possesses) to individuals, social groups, organizations, and communities in obtaining their objectives. This book places social capital in the family of capital theories (the classical and neo-capital theories), articulates its elements and propositions, presents research programs, findings, and agenda, and theorizes its significance in various moments of interactions between individual actions and social structure (for example, the primordial groups, social exchanges, organizations, institutional transformations and cybernetworks). Nan Lin eloquently introduces a groundbreaking theory that forcefully argues and shows why it is 'who you know', as well as 'what you know' that makes a difference in life and society
