Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind.     Abstract: Das „Ebene Kilikien“ ist eine von Mittelmeer und Gebirgen umrandete Kulturlandschaft im Süden der Türkei. Während sich die Siedlungsschwerpunkte in den vergangenen Jahrtausenden nur marginal verändert haben, hat sich das Landschaftsbild umso mehr gewandelt: In der Bronze- und Eisenzeit dominierten Siedlungshügel und in römischer und frühbyzantinischer Zeit zahlreiche Flachsiedlungen die heute intensiv landwirtschaftlich genutzte Region. Diese war während des Mittelalters weniger dicht besiedelt und weite Teile wurden von nomadischen Gruppierungen als Winterweidegebiet genutzt. Heute prägen wenige Großstädte, dörfliche Ansiedlungen, Ackerflächen, Plantagen und zahlreiche Bewässerungskanäle das Landschaftsbild. Susanne Rutishauser stellt die Kultur- und Landschaftsgeschichte des Ebenen Kilikien aus einer archäologischen Perspektive dar. Dafür werden die vorliegenden Informationen aus Ausgrabungen, Surveys und Textarchiven sowie die Auswertung von Fernerkundungsdaten zusammengeführt. Es zeigt sich u.a., dass die Lage spätbronzezeitlicher Fundplätze sowie Landschaftselemente auf historischen Satellitenbilddaten eine Bewässerung bereits während der Spätbronze- und Eisenzeit vermuten lassen

    Abstract: Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing rapid population growth. Yet their economic growth has not kept pace. Why? One factor might be low capital investment, due in part to Africa's relative poverty: Other regions have reached similar stages of urbanization at higher per capita GDP. This study, however, identifies a deeper reason: African cities are closed to the world. Compared with other developing cities, cities in Africa produce few goods and services for trade on regional and international markets. To grow economically as they are growing in size, Africa's cities must open their doors to the world. They need to specialize in manufacturing, along with other regionally and globally tradable goods and services. And to attract global investment in tradables production, cities must develop scale economies, which are associated with successful urban economic development in other regions. Such scale economies can arise in Africa, and they will-if city and country leaders make concerted efforts to bring agglomeration effects to urban areas. Today, potential urban investors and entrepreneurs look at Africa and see crowded, disconnected, and costly cities. Such cities inspire low expectations for the scale of urban production and for returns on invested capital. How can these cities become economically dense-not merely crowded? How can they acquire efficient connections? And how can they draw firms and skilled workers with a more affordable, livable urban environment? From a policy standpoint, the answer must be to address the structural problems affecting African cities. Foremost among these problems are institutional and regulatory constraints that misallocate land and labor, fragment physical development, and limit productivity. As long as African cities lack functioning land markets and regulations and early, coordinated infrastructure investments, they will remain local cities: closed to regional and global markets, trapped into producing only locally traded goods and services, and limited in their economic growth

    Abstract: Space and time on earth are regulated by the Prime Meridian, 0°, which is, by convention, based at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. But the meridian's location in southeast London is not a simple legacy of Britain's imperial past. Before the nineteenth century, more than twenty-five different prime meridians were in use around the world, including Paris, Beijing, Greenwich, Washington, and the location traditional in Europe since Ptolemy, the Canary Islands. Charles Withers explains how the choice of Greenwich to mark 0° longitude solved complex problems of global measurement that had engaged geographers, astronomers, and mariners since ancient times. Withers guides readers through the navigation and astronomy associated with diverse meridians and explains the problems that these cartographic lines both solved and created. He shows that as science and commerce became more global and as railway and telegraph networks tied the world closer together, the multiplicity of prime meridians led to ever greater confusion in the coordination of time and the geographical division of space. After a series of international scientific meetings, notably the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, DC, Greenwich emerged as the most pragmatic choice for a global prime meridian, though not unanimously or without acrimony. Even after 1884, other prime meridians remained in use for decades. As Zero Degrees shows, geographies of the prime meridian are a testament to the power of maps, the challenges of accurate measurement on a global scale, and the role of scientific authority in creating the modern world.--

    Abstract: "Ho Chi Minh, the founder of modern Vietnam, once famously remarked that "forests are gold--if we know to protect and develop them well, they will be very precious." Ho's statement conveys important ideas about nature, the state, and society that are relevant in understanding contemporary environmental issues in Vietnam. For Ho and other political leaders, forests have been about more than trees: they were about the development and administration of both people and landscapes. This book presents a genealogy of forest management in Vietnam from the beginning of French colonial rule to the present day. Using detailed ethnographic, interview, archival and biological data, Pamela McElwee presents a nuanced perspective on environmental change through the eyes of subjects on the ground. By explaining how knowledge about forests was generated, and by whom, and how this knowledge was used by different actors engaged in forest governance, the book shows that forests are not "natural" entities outside of human influence"--
    Abstract: "Ho Chi Minh, the founder of modern Vietnam, once famously remarked that "forests are gold--if we know to protect and develop them well, they will be very precious." Ho's statement conveys important ideas about nature, the state, and society that are relevant in understanding contemporary environmental issues in Vietnam. For Ho and other political leaders, forests have been about more than trees: they were about the development and administration of both people and landscapes.     Abstract: This book is the first monograph in English that comprehensively examines the ways in which Italian historical crime novels, TV series, and films have become a means to intervene in the social and political changes of the country.     Abstract: The present work not only contributes to shedding light on the linguistic and socio-historical origins of Afro-Peruvian Spanish, it also helps clarify the controversial puzzle concerning the genesis of Spanish creoles in the Americas in a broader sense. In order to provide a more concrete answer to the questions raised by McWhorter's book on The Missing Spanish Creoles, the current study has focused on an aspect of the European colonial enterprise in the Americas that has never been closely analyzed in relation to the evolution of Afro-European contact varieties, the legal regulations of black slavery. This book proposes the 'Legal Hypothesis of Creole Genesis', which ascribes a prime importance in the development of Afro-European languages in the Americas to the historical evolution of slavery, from the legal rules contained in the Roman Corpus Juris Civilis to the codes and regulations implemented in the different European colonies overseas. This research was carried out with the belief that creole studies will benefit greatly from a more interdisciplinary approach, capable of combining linguistic, socio-historical, legal, and anthropological insights. This study is meant to represent an eclectic step in such a direction

    Abstract: Mainstream historical accounts of the development of capitalism describe a process which is fundamentally European - a system that was born in the mills and factories of England or under the guillotines of the French Revolution. In this groundbreaking book, a very different story is told. How the West Came to Rule offers a unique interdisciplinary and international historical account of the origins of capitalism. It argues that contrary to the dominant wisdom, capitalism's origins should not be understood as a development confined to the geographically and culturally sealed borders of Europe, but the outcome of a wider array of global processes in which non-European societies played a decisive role. Through an outline of the uneven histories of Mongolian expansion, New World discoveries, Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, the development of the Asian colonies and bourgeois revolutions, Alexander Anievas and Kerem Nisancioglu provide an account of how these diverse events and processes came together to produce capitalism

    Abstract: "In the context of growing global concerns about climate change, this book presents a regional and sub-continental synthesis of pastoralists' responses to past environmental changes and reflects on the lessons for current and future environmental challenges. Drawing from rock art, archaeology, paleoecological data, trade, ancient hydrological technology, vegetation, social memory and historical documentation, this book creates detailed reconstructions of past climate change adaptations across Sahelian Africa. It evaluates the present and future challenges to climate change adaptation in the region in terms of social memory, rainfall variability, environmental change and armed conflicts and examines the ways in which governance and policy drivers may undermine pastoralists' adaptive strategies. The book's scope covers the Red Sea coast, Somaliland, Somalia, the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, and northern Kenya, part of the Ethiopian highlands and Eritrea, areas where past climate change has been extreme and future change makes it vital to understand the dynamics of adaptation.     Abstract: Ce volume aborde des phénomènes de mobilité spatiale rarement pris en considération dans les débats actuels en sciences sociales où la mobilité est considérée comme un «principe général de la modernité» (Bonß et al. 2004) et célébrée comme un nouveau paradigme. A l'exemple de l’espace Sahara-Sahel, les auteurs traitent ici de variantes « banales » de mobilité et de mouvement dans la mesure où elles représentent des formes élémentaires de recherche de subsistance et de revenu. Ces formes sont le contraire de ce que l’on peut assimiler à des stratégies de « libre choix » ou les expressions d’une individualité moderne. Une des particularités des articles présentés ici est d’analyser diverses formes de mobilité spatiale, tant régionales qu’à travers des exemples classiques de migration européenne, non seulement en fonction de leurs effets économiques sur l'individu et la collectivité d’origine mais aussi des implications locales et régionales qu’elles génèrent. L’objectif de cet ouvrage est ainsi d'attirer l'attention sur le fait que ces mouvements présentent néanmoins un potentiel inhérent de changement et de développement. Les textes ont été rédigés à partir des communications présentés à un atelier de travail interdisciplinaire financé par la Fondation allemande pour la Recherche (DFG), à Bamako en Février 2011. Des études empiriques sur l’espace Sahara-Sahel y ont été mises en lumière dans une perspective "vue de loin", qui compare les conditions politiques et administratives des mobilités en Afrique de l'Ouest. S’y ajoute une perspective « vue de près » qui suggère une conception de mobilité inspirée de celle des nomades sahélo-sahariens et non de celle des voyageurs occidentaux modernes

    Abstract: Die Translationswissenschaft der vergangenen Jahre ist durch eine zunehmende interdisziplinäre Auseinandersetzung gekennzeichnet, die der Disziplin zu einer ausgeprägten Profilierung verhalf und vielschichtige wissenschaftstheoretische Diskussionen vorantrieb. Der Beitrag der vorliegenden Arbeit zu dieser Konturierung ist auf mehreren Ebenen zu orten: Zum einen werden, ausgehend von der These, dass das Phänomen der Übersetzung in seinen vielfachen Ausformungen wesentlich zur Konstituierung des plurikulturellen Raumes der Habsburgermonarchie beitrug, verschiedene Schichten des Konstruktcharakters von Übersetzung freigelegt, zum anderen auf der Grundlage des kultursoziologischen Theorierahmens von Pierre Bourdieu die einzelnen Konstruktionsprozesse vor dem Hintergrund detaillierter akteurInnenbezogener Analysen ausgeleuchtet und in die Skizzierung eines „plurikulturellen Kommunikationsraumes der Habsburgermonarchie“ übergeleitet.Zur Bestimmung des Beitrages des übersetzerischen Phänomens zur Konstruktion der habsburgischen Kultur im Untersuchungszeitraum 1848-1918 wird in der postkolonialen Theorie Anleihe genommen und ein Kulturkonzept skizziert, das der auf weite Teile der Monarchie zutreffenden hybriden Befindlichkeit zu entsprechen und die symbolischen Formen ethnisch artikulierter Herrschaft zu erfassen sucht. Unter Anwendung des daraus konzipierten metaphorischen Translationsbegriffs („kulturelle Übersetzung“) wird anschließend auf der Basis der translatorischen Praktiken der Habsburgermonarchie eine Typologie der verschiedenen Übersetzungsformen entworfen, die der Vielschichtigkeit dieser Praktiken entlang der Bandbreite von „Kommunikation“ bis „Translation“ entsprechen. Untersucht wird – vorrangig auf der Grundlage von Archivquellen – zum einen die translatorische Praxis in den Ministerien („Terminologiekommission“, „Redaktionsbureau des Reichsgesetzblattes“, „Sektion für Chiffrewesen und translatorische Arbeiten“), bei Gericht (gerichtliche beeidete Dolmetscher), im diplomatischen Dienst etc., zum anderen werden anhand umfangreicher Korpora die Übersetzungsströme zwischen den einzelnen Sprachen der Kronländer und auch mit Ländern außerhalb der Monarchie nach zahlreichen Parametern aufgearbeitet (Schwerpunkt: Übersetzungen ins Deutsche).     Abstract: In the last few decades, the discipline of Translation Studies has been characterized by a considerable increase of interdisciplinary approaches which both helped to sharpen its profiling and to promote its multilayered epistemological discussions. The contribution of this book to these developments is located on various levels. I claim that in view of its multifaceted forms, translation as practiced in the late Habsburg Empire to a high degree contributed to the construction of cultures in the pluri-cultural space of the Habsburg Monarchy: on the one hand, I have revealed the various layers of translation’s constructive character and then – on the basis of Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework – shed light on the various construction processes on behalf of detailed analyses which focus on the agents involved in these processes. These considerations are then reflected in the delineation of a model which I call the “pluri-cultural communication space of the Habsburg Monarchy”. In terms of methodology, I have drawn on post-colonial theoretical frameworks. On such a basis, I have sketched a concept of culture which aims to correspond to the hybrid constellations characteristic to vast parts of the Monarchy and which claims to detect the symbolic forms of ethnically articulated dominance. The metaphorically inspired translation concept developed in the wake of these reflections (“cultural translation”) results in conceptualizing a typology of various translation forms which claim to do justice to the complexity of the Monarchy’s translatorial practices in the continuum between “communication” and “translation”. Primarily on the basis of archival sources, the analysis covers the translatorial practice in the various ministries (“Commission of Terminology “,“Bureau of Redaction of the Imperial Law Gazette”, “Section of Ciphering and Translatorial Work”), in court (sworn interpreters), and in the diplomatic service, among others. On the other hand, I have worked on extensive corpora analyzing the translation flows both between various languages of the crown lands and with countries outside the Monarchy by adopting numerous parameters (focus: translations into German).
