Abstract: In an era cross-cut with various agendas and expressions of national belonging and global awareness, "the nation" as a collective reference point and experienced entity stands at the center of complex identity struggles. This book explores how such struggles unfold in practice at a highly symbolic battlefield site in the Danish/German borderland. Comprised of an ethnography of two profoundly different institutions – a conventional museum and an experience-based heritage center – it analyses the ways in which staff and visitors interfere with, relate to, and literally "make sense" of the war heritage and its national connotations. Borders of Belonging offers a comparative, in-depth analysis of the practices and negotiations through which history is made and manifested at two houses devoted to the interpretation of one event: the decisive battle of the 1864 war in which Otto von Bismarck, on his way to uniting the new German Empire, led the Prussian army to victory over the Danish. Working through his empirical material to engage with and challenge established theoretical positions in the study of museums, modernity, and tourism, Mads Daugbjerg demonstrates that national belonging is still a key cultural concern, even as it asserts itself in novel, muted, and increasingly experiential ways.

Abstract: Contemporary forms of capitalism and the state require close analytic attention to reveal the conditions of possibility for effective counter-politics. On the other hand the practice of collective politics needs to be studied through historical ethnography if we are to understand what might make people's actions effective. This book suggests a research agenda designed to maximize the political leverage of ordinary people faced with ever more remote states and technologies that make capitalism increasingly rapacious. Gavin Smith opens and closes this series of interlinked essays by proposing a concise framework for untangling what he calls "the society of capital" and subsequently a potentially controversial way of seeing its contemporary features. This book tackles the political conundrums of our times and asks what roles intellectuals might play therein.

Abstract: The study addresses the question of how peer review committees come to a consensual decision. Therefore the decision making process of review committees to promote collaborative research centres (CRC, in German: Sonderforschungsbereiche, SFB) was analyzed. The results show that the organizational framework of the evaluation sessions as well as the organization of the entire peer review process (whereby the group evaluation is only one step in the whole process) have a great influence on: (1) on the decision making process within the panel, (2) on the final consensual decision of the panel group and (3) on the (unwanted) group phenomena that may occur during panel reviews. In addition the results illustrate that reviewers perceived the process of evaluations as both the subject of their own decisions (role: reviewer) as well as the object of the decision-making process of others (role: applicant). Therefore, for them it is central as a subject to participate in a process that is so fair that they can also experience the process as being wholly fair as an object of the decision of others. This personal call for fairness is stronger in relation to group evaluations than for individual peer review evaluations. Methodologically, an exploratory approach was chosen and three CRC preliminary review session (SFB Beratungsgespräch) and four CRC on-site reviews (SFB Einrichtungsbegutachtungen) were analyzed using the method of non-participant observation. In addition, 80 semi-structured interviews were conducted with evaluation session participants and selected applicants and a content analysis of review documents were done.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to show to what extend the current practices evolving around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be placed in the realm of neo-liberal art of governing in Turkey. Having become increasingly relevant in the last decade, the concept has been attracting more and more attention from various organizations and academia. While most of the literature deals with who the CSR actors are and what they do, this study attempts to go beyond that and explore the rationality behind the emergence and development of the concept in Turkey, through the application of governmentality studies.

Abstract: In this PhD-thesis the social context of health selection processes on the German labor market are investigated theoretically and empirically. Based on human capital theory a number of hypotheses about the causal effect of subjective health and sickness absence on job status are derived. The theory is modified to allow the effect of health to vary with the degree of disadvantage a person faces and the degree of social closure of the job. In concrete terms, the moderating effect of gender and public versus private sector are investigated, as well as the occupational gender composition. The empirical analyses are based on the Socio-economic panel study (SOEP) using different methods to estimate causal effects of subjective health on subsequent job status. A decomposition of overall health inequalities into effects attributable to time-constant, time-varying confounders and into health selection processes is presented. The results show that health selection is present for women in the private sector, but not for men nor in the public sector. Sickness absence shows the strongest effects for men in the private sector, but not for women nor in the public sector. For the chosen setting, health selection processes are strongest in open positions and for groups that are disadvantaged.

Abstract: This study asks how the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin affects its visitors. The study comprises a quantitative survey of 500 visitors. First the study introduces the theories of memory by Jan and Aleida Assmann and Horst-Alfred Heinrich. This is followed by the concept of the so-called representative public space that locates the memorial topographically. This chapter also shows the historical context of the memorial. It describes the development processes of earlier monuments to remember the victims of the Holocaust in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic between 1945 and 2005. The study then shows the development process of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. There are no theories on the effects of memorials in the social sciences. The study uses Pierre Bourdieu''s theory of art sociology as well as a study on the impact of memorial sites by Bert Pampel and a study on the emotional effects of paintings by Dorothee Halcour as a theoretical frame. The most resultant hypothesises tested by the research state that visitors differ in their reactions to the memorial according to their education, their nationality and their age. Furthermore the study presumes that the circumstances of visiting the memorial affect how people react to the memorial. The results show that visitors with lower levels of education are less often able to develop an understanding of the memorial compared to visitors with a higher education background. The results indicate that these visitors are excluded from the intended remembrance of the Holocaust when the materialization of the memorial is implemented with artistic measures. Nationality plays a significant role too and influences visitors when judging the memorial. Germans more often have negative and less often positive judgements than foreign visitors. Finally the results of the research are discussed in the context of the cultural debate around the significance of memorials.

Abstract: The phenomenon of poverty is one of the most serious problems of big cities. The focus of this doctoral thesis is an examination of poverty in two major cities, which must be understood on a broader basis while considering social inequality, rising unemployment, deterioration of working and living conditions, income disparities, etc. These increasing characteristics are notable in cities of developed countries such as Berlin. The growing spread of poverty in industrialized societies and in emerging countries has led to a broader discussion about the phenomenon of poverty at the international level. This doctoral thesis analyzes the phenomenon of poverty in two major cities. Mexico City and Berlin are two different cities with similar social problems. Mexico City is a ,typicalʼ city in a emerging country, which is structurally as well as functionally different from cities of developed countries by the degree of social inequality and the pronounced gap between rich and poor. On the other hand, after its reunification Berlin faces problems of other large cities. In recent years the following phenomena have occurred: the emergence of new forms of poverty, a growing number of welfare recipients, an increasing migrant population without economic prospects etc. This study summarizes investigative findings and reports on poverty in Mexico City and Berlin together. The goal is not to collect new empirical data, but rather to emphasize the selection, presentation and analysis of various studies on poverty in both cities. The analysis focuses on poverty from the standpoint of common aspects, differing characteristics and the respective development trends in the two researched cities.

Abstract: The use of online mobilization appeals has grown exponentially in the past decade, with all major campaigns at the local, national and European levels being fought both online and offline. For all their use, scholars are just in the incipient phases of truly understanding whether and to what extent these appeals have their intended effect. This analysis puts to the test the ability of online campaign appeals to increase a voter’s involvement in the election, by relying on information collected during the 2009 European Parliament elections in 15 EU countries. The novel aspect of the study represents the ability to control for offline mobilization attempts which voters might have received during the campaign. By making use of a “funnel of causality” design, and a series of structural equation models, the results presented here suggest that online mobilization messages have a very limited, if any, effect. When taking into account a respondent’s interest in politics, as well as the extent to which they have been personally contacted by a party worker through the phone, mail, or even at the doorstep, there is little added effect which online messages bring. This highlights both a characteristic of the medium of communication, as well as the use of online messages by the campaigns: primarily to maintain contact with their core supporters. The analysis concludes by pointing toward the need for further investigations, needed as online messages become more sophisticated, and by noting that for the 2009 election cycle traditional channels of mobilization proved more effective than online ones.

Abstract: This thesis examines the nature of Russian-Turkish trade partnership with particular focus on their coopera-tion in the natural gas sector. In so doing, countries’ Global Aspirations, their Energy Strategies, the role of their National Champions in attaining countries’ broader objectives, and lastly their motivations in trading with each other are extensively explored for to understand the extent to which countries’ energy objectives are fulfilled in the framework of broader energy partnership. The findings of the research suggest that in a new world order influenced by virtues of neoliberal policy Rus-sia and Turkey, aspiring to rise as global and regional powers, are seeking to integrate themselves into the global free market system. By developing new and applicable strategies, they are aiming to consolidate their positions as major actors in the global markets. Hence, despite significant political differences, respective countries continue their trade by placing 'pragmatism' and 'interdependence' high on agenda for Russia and Turkey understand that they need each other for economic growth and that their multidimensional trade partnership holds a prospect for achieve-ment of their Regional and Global aspirations.

Abstract: Based on panel data from the City of Davis, California, comprising more than 15,000 urban water consumption units and 81 billing periods over 13 years, this study investigates residential water demand and the effectiveness of three structural water conservation measures. The city switched from a uniform to an increasing block pricing scheme, introduced a second tariff block for single-family residential households, and changed the calculation logic for the household sewer rate. An instrumental fixed effects regression analysis results in a price elasticity of -0.19 for residential consumers. The data also suggests that all structural tariff adjustments were effective, even under consideration of the general economic situation. This is the first study which demonstrates the effectiveness of coupling the sewer rate with a proxy for indoor water consumption on a household level.

Abstract: As one main actor seeking for non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the negotiations with Iran on its nuclear programme looms large in the EU’s aspirations for future security matters. However, consider-ing the outcomes of the negotiation process with Iran so far, it is apparent that both the initial E3 and then the EU strategies could not manage to dissuade Iran from its non-compliance with the demands of the inter-national community. This study tries to examine the European Union’s engagement with Iran on its nuclear programme in terms of coercive diplomacy implementations of the EU over Iran. In this regard; the concep-tual framework of the coercive diplomacy theory and the practical employment of the theory into the case are respectively dealt with. Thus, the major aim of this thesis is to answer the questions of, first, to what ex-tend the EU has achieved applying a successful coercive diplomacy strategy over Iran and second, what parts of its strategy have not been meeting the conditions favoring an eventual success. With an eye to dif-ferent depictions and analyzes subscribed by scholars through time, through this study the contributions conducted by Alexander George to the theorization of coercive diplomacy will be taken as the primary meth-odological assessment.

Abstract: With evidence that right-wing populist movements are becoming increasingly more widespread throughout the Western world, a reevaluation of far-right political thought and their propensity for popular support is in order. This is particularly necessary given the spate of recent Tea Party-esqe ‘activism’ throughout North America, in the form of unabashed reverence for ‘people-led’ pro market revolution and so called ‘minute-men’ militia, and the extensive communication and cooperation between the various far-right movements throughout the European nations, capped by the recent atrocities in Norway. This paper shall provide an im-portant stepping stone into addressing the very real problems concerning rightwing populist trends of today, particularly in the social realm, where many people run the risk of being severely marginalized by these movements. Through comparative analysis, this exploration takes a look at two right-wing populist move-ments, The Tea Party in America and Pro-Köln in Germany, and how they differ in a range of variables, even though their demands on society are very similar.

Abstract: Scholars of the welfare state tend to use absolute categories such as “class”, “state”, “market” or “social jus-tice” to measure, classify and compare welfare states. Drawing predominantly on Michel Foucault’s lectures on governmentality, this master’s thesis attempts to offer alternative perspectives on the transformation of welfare states by analyzing developments in the Turkish health system in consideration of their historicity and of the complexity of social relations reflected in them. Interpreting different historical episodes of Turk-ish health policies since the late Ottoman Empire, special attention is paid not only to changing political con-ceptions of health, but also to the techniques and strategies that governments have relied on to influence the conduct of providers and receivers of health services. The study draws predominantly on primary sources such as official government papers, speeches and expert interviews. Dominant political discourses on health have reached from “charity and favor” under the Sultans over “securing the strength of the nation” in the early Republic to the idea of everybody’s “right to health”, that is eventually mixed and complemented with neoliberal vocabulary such as “(minimal) universalism”, “individual responsibility”, or “efficiency and compe-tition”. In spite of the emergence of healthcare as a policy area being attached to an expanding bureaucratic apparatus, most programs and projects have remained inconsistent and fragmentary due to the composition of Turkish society and economy and the persistent struggles between different forms of governments. The findings suggest that only with the so-called Health Transformation Program (HTP) that is implemented since 2003 under the government of the Justice and Development Party (JDP), a health system has emerged that is consistently based on a distinguished mode of government. Neoliberalism, understood as the attempt to take the formal principles of a market economy and projecting them onto a general art of government, con-stitutes the underlying tenet of the HTP’s wide net of programs, projects and regulations by which the gov-ernment attempts to create, rather actively but from a distance, a health system in which all players act ra-tional, economically and self-responsible.

Abstract: Gentrification - a process of replacement of a poorer population in an urban neighborhood with a richer one and the change of the looks of this respective neighborhood - has become a widespread topic of societal debate in recent years. This process is connected to public art and cultural activities, and sometimes triggered by projects of urban revitalization by the respective cities. Public libraries are part of this process, as they are used in the concepts of urban revitalization as institutions of public culture. This puts them in an uneasy position, as they also become part in processes of repulsion of socially vulnerable groups. The text will discuss the position of public libraries in respect to gentrification, using the processes in the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, as a case study.

Abstract: As life expectancy increases in India, the number of people living with dementia will also rise. Yet little is known about how people in India cope with dementia, how relationships and identities change through illness and loss. In addressing this question, this book offers a rich ethnographic account of how middle-class families in urban India care for their relatives with dementia. From the husband who wakes up at 3 am to feed his wife ice-cream to the daughters who gave up employment for seven years to care for their mother with dementia, this book illuminates the local idioms on dementia and aging, the personal experience of care-giving, the functioning of stigma in daily life, and the social and cultural barriers in accessing support.

Abstract: The Pacific region presents a huge diversity of cultural forms, which have fuelled some of the most challenging ethnographic work undertaken in the discipline. But this challenge has come at a cost. Culture, often reconfigured as 'custom', has often served to trap the people of the Pacific in the past of cultural reproduction, where everything is what it has always been, or worse-outdated, outmoded and destined for modernization. Pacific Futures asks how our understanding of social life in the Pacific would be different if we approached it from the perspective of the futures which Pacific people dream of, predict or struggle to achieve, not the reproduction of cultural tradition. From Christianity to gambling, marriage to cargo cult, military coups to reflections on childhood fishing trips, the contributors to this volume show how Pacific people are actively shaping their lives with the future in mind.

Abstract: Metaphor, as an act of human fancy, combines ideas in improbable ways to sharpen meanings of life and experience. Theoretically, this arises from an association between a sign-for example, a cattle car-and its referent, the Holocaust. These "sign-vehicles" serve as modes of semiotic transportation through conceptual space. Likewise, on-the-ground vehicles can be rich metaphors for the moral imagination. Following on this insight, Vehicles presents a collection of ethnographic essays on the metaphoric significance of vehicles in different cultures. Analyses include canoes in Papua New Guinea, pedestrians and airplanes in North America, lowriders among Mexican-Americans, and cars in contemporary China, Japan, and Eastern Europe, as well as among African-Americans in the South. Vehicles not only "carry people around," but also "carry" how they are understood in relation to the dynamics of culture, politics and history.

Abstract: An attempt to reveal, recover and reconsider the roles, positions, and actions of Ottoman women, this volume reconsiders the negotiations, alliances, and agency of women in asserting themselves in the public domain in late- and post-Ottoman cities. Drawing on diverse theoretical backgrounds and a variety of source materials, from court records to memoirs to interviews, the contributors to the volume reconstruct the lives of these women within the urban sphere. With a fairly wide geographical span, from Aleppo to Sofia, from Jeddah to Istanbul, the chapters offer a wide panorama of the Ottoman urban geography, with a specific concern for gender roles.

Abstract: The thesis ‘Die Linke: A Political Discourse Analysis’ tries to understand a) how and by which means language in politics can be strategically used in order to influence voters b) what kind of social and political context have an influence on the formation of political discourses and c) what kind of effects do political discourses have on actual policy making processes on the basis of the analysis of The Left Party (Die Linke in German). The overall aim of this study is not to oppose the already existing literature on Die Linke, which try to explain the party’s success with the declining economic prosperity of the masses and the unsuccessful policy making of its opponents but to add the linguistic dimension to the analysis in order to understand the rise of Die Linke more comprehensively. In order to achieve this aim, the research first identifies the discursive strategies of the selected text and then discusses the contextual impacts on the observed discursive strategies by adopting the main principles of Critical Discourse Analysis. The main hypothesis of this research is that political discourses of Die Linke should be considered as a part of the political strategy which tries to create counter-hegemonic discursive practices and aims to affect policy-making process. Die Linke’s success for filling the gap in the left is not only dependent on other parties’ unsuccessful policy-making but also on the party’s capacity to influence voters by its political discourses.

Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, ausgehend von Michel Foucaults Theorie der „Governmentalität“, Prakti-ken der “Rückkehrförderung irregulärer Migrant_innen“ in Deutschland alsTechniken neoliberalen Regierens globaler „Migrationsströme“.
Abstract: Starting from Michel Foucault’s theory of governmentality, this thesis analyses practices of “fostering return of irregular migrants” in Germany as a neoliberal technique of governing global “flows of migration”. “Gov-ernment” is understood through Foucault as the “conduct of conduct”, and thus comprises far more than merely state institutions. The thesis traces a genealogy of fostering return in different forms in Germany, showing that current forms increasingly target irregular migrants. This genealogy is then set in relation to changing rationalizations of migration and world space. I conclude that exercising influence on migrants subjectivized as irregular becomes relevant within a neoliberal rationality of government, because they en-danger the free flow of “regular” migrants. A regulated, free flow of regular migrants in turn is important in a world conceptualized as a global space, because it represents a necessary global market of human capital. Furthermore, current programs of fostering “voluntary return” can be interpreted as neoliberal techniques of government, which are spreading into the discursive field of migration. This does not, however, mean that sovereign techniques such as deportation are being replaced. Rather, a discursive field of “governing return” is opened up, in which neoliberal and sovereign techniques are logically connected and depend on each oth-er. A case study, realized in one of the institutions founded specifically in order to foster return in different federal states in Germany, finally investigates upon government techniques in the field of “return” on an in-stitutional level, and offers insights into the subjectivization and conceptualizationsof the institution’s aims and work practices by its director. I find that within the institution, which is active at the intersection of dif-ferent (neoliberal and sovereign) techniques of fostering return, neoliberal rationalizations of the irregular migrants and the applied measures dominate as well.

Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to use the constructivist approach to international relations and Alexander Wendt's conception of agency-structure relationships in international politics to explain structural determinants of Turkey's policy towards the Balkans in the recent period. I’ll try to answer the question of how and to what extent the traditional foreign policy understanding influences the identity and behavior of new actors in Tur-key’s foreign policy and which are the elements of the “old” ideational structure that could be observed in the current relations between Turkey and the Balkans. I take Turkey’s foreign policy principles, observable from the period of founding of the Republic till the end of the Cold War as a given structure, and try to show how they influence the formulation of what is called Turkey’s new foreign policy and the behavior of Turkey towards the Balkans in the period from 2009, when Ahmet Davutoğlu took office of Minister of Foreign Af-fairs. I argue that traditional principles constitutively participate in Davutoğlu’s imagination of Turkey’s rela-tion with the Balkans and are even more observable in its foreign policy behavior towards Balkan countries. In that sense I support the argument that there was no great shift in the ideational structure of Turkey’s for-eign policy since Davutoğlu took office and that long-established principles of Turkish foreign policy are still traceable in the AKP Era.

Abstract: The current discussion about „new fathers“ assumes a significant correlation between work context and father engagement. But exactly which factors influence paternal identity and a distinct interpretation of fatherhood? Besides social structural variables like position within the labor market or income, this dissertation measures additional influencing variables like fathers’ preferences and partnership variables on father identity. The concept of father identity is based on seven subjective dimensions: mental strain, gain, patience, time/relationship, ability to assert oneself and releasability. Evaluating this concept of paternal identity shows that factors related to employment have less influence on fathers’ identities as may expected. Furthermore, this study shows that fathers’ identity is influenced by a mixture of socio-structural and non-sociostructural factors alike. These have to be measured in a multidimensional model. Data comes from self-administered questionnaires among 166 fathers. The evaluation of the concept of paternal identity was done by quantitative bivariate and multivariate statistical methods.

Abstract: Throughout its history the concept of "Uzbekness," or more generally of a Turkic-speaking sedentary population, has continuously attracted members of other groups to join, as being Uzbek promises opportunities to enlarge ones social network. Accession is comparatively easy, as Uzbekness is grounded in a cultural model of territoriality, rather than genealogy, as the basis for social attachments. It acknowledges regional variation and the possibility of membership by voluntary decision. Therefore, the boundaries of being Uzbek vary almost by definition, incorporating elements of local languages, cultural patterns and social organization. This book combines an historical analysis with thorough ethnographic field research, looking at differences in the conceptualization of group boundaries and the social practices they entail. It does so by analysing decision-making processes by Uzbeks on the individual as well as cognitive level and the political configurations that surround them.

Abstract: Most of the Muslim societies of the world have entered a demographic transition from high to low fertility, and this process is accompanied by an increase in youth vis-à-vis other age groups. Political scientists and historians have debated whether such a "youth bulge" increases the potential for conflict or whether it represents a chance to accumulate wealth and push forward social and technological developments. This book introduces the discussion about youth bulge into social anthropology using Tajikistan, a post-Soviet country that experienced civil war in the 1990s, which is in the middle of such a demographic transition. Sophie Roche develops a social anthropological approach to analyze demographic and political dynamics, and suggests a new way of thinking about social change in youth bulge societies.

Abstract: Contributing to identity formation in ethnically and religiously diverse postcolonial societies, this book examines the role played by creole identity in Indonesia, and in particular its capital, Jakarta. While, on the one hand, it facilitates transethnic integration and promotes a specifically postcolonial sense of common nationhood due to its heterogeneous origins, creole groups of people are often perceived ambivalently in the wake of colonialism and its demise, on the other. In this book, Jacqueline Knörr analyzes the social, historical, and political contexts of creoleness both at the grassroots and the State level, showing how different sections of society engage with creole identity in order to promote collective identification transcending ethnic and religious boundaries, as well as for reasons of self-interest and ideological projects.

Abstract: Friendship, descent and alliance are basic forms of relatedness that have received unequal attention in social anthropology. Offering new insights into the ways in which friendship is conceptualized and realized in various sub-Saharan African settings, the contributions to this volume depart from the recent tendency to study friendship in isolation from kinship. In drawing attention to the complexity of the interactions between these two kinds of social relationships, the book suggests that analyses of friendship in Western societies would also benefit from research that explores more systematically friendship in conjunction with kinship.

Abstract: Within little more than ten years in the early nineteenth century, inhabitants of Tahiti, Hawaii and fifteen other closely related societies destroyed or desecrated all of their temples and most of their god-images. In the aftermath of the explosive event, which Sissons terms the Polynesian Iconoclasm, hundreds of architecturally innovative churches - one the size of two football fields - were constructed. At the same time, Christian leaders introduced oppressive laws and courts, which the youth resisted through seasonal displays of revelry and tattooing. Seeking an answer to why this event occurred in the way that it did, this book introduces and demonstrates an alternative "practice history" that draws on the work of Marshall Sahlins and employs Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, improvisation and practical logic.

Abstract: If memory was simply about past events, public authorities would never put their ever-shrinking budgets at its service. Rather, memory is actually about the present moment, as Pierre Nora puts it: "Through the past, we venerate above all ourselves." This book examines how collective memory and material culture are used to support present political and ideological needs in contemporary society. Using the memorialization of the Troubles in contemporary Northern Ireland as a case study, this book investigates how non-state, often proscribed, organizations have filled a societal vacuum in the creation of public memorials. In particular, these groups have sifted through the past to propose "official" collective narratives of national identification, historical legitimation, and moral justifications for violence.

Abstract: The scholarship of Ulf Hannerz is characterized by its extraordinary breadth and visionary nature. He has contributed to the understanding of urban life and transnational networks, and the role of media, paradoxes of identity and new forms of community, suggesting to see culture in terms of flows rather than as bounded entities. Contributions honor Hannerz' legacy by addressing theoretical, epistemological, ethical and methodological challenges facing anthropological inquiry on topics from cultural diversity policies in Europe to transnational networks in Yemen, and from pottery and literature to multinational corporations.

Abstract: The 1970s saw the Aboriginal people of Australia struggle for recognition of their postcolonial rights. Rural communities, where large Aboriginal populations lived, were provoked as a consequence of social fragmentation, unparalleled unemployment, and other major economic and political changes. The ensuing riots, protests, and law-and-order campaigns in New South Wales captured the tense relations that existed between indigenous people, the police, and the criminal justice system. In Protests, Land Rights, and Riots, Barry Morris shows how neoliberal policies in Australia targeted those who were least integrated socially and culturally, and who enjoyed fewer legitimate economic opportunities. Amidst intense political debate, struggle, and conflict, new forces were unleashed as a post-settler colonial state grappled with its past. Morris provides a social analysis of the ensuing effects of neoliberal policy and the way indigenous rights were subsequently undermined by this emerging new political orthodoxy in the 1990s.

Abstract: Using a constructivist discourse analysis, this thesis argues that there has been a fundamental shift in the American understanding of the U.S.-Turkish relationship under President Obama, situated within a broader change in the nature of American foreign policy making. By analyzing presidential and other high-level dis-course beginning in the Reagan era, this thesis examines the chronological path of American foreign policy, specifically in relation to Turkey, delving into political language, actions, and structural changes. By engaging constructivist theory, this thesis highlights the fluid nature of relations, endeavoring to answer the underly-ing question of how the high-level understanding of the U.S. role in world affairs generally, and in relation to Turkey specifically, has moved beyond a strict realist foundation over the past decades.

Abstract: Anerkennung wird heute sozialphilosophisch diskutiert.
Abstract: Recognition is discussed today predominantly in social philosophy. But it also has a political-philosophical history and it is going through several changes. The prelude is the political philosophy of the 19th century. The first conversion passes through the discussion in the transition from Hegel''s Realphilosophie (1806) to his Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807. Abruptly was no longer the topos of recognition in the center of the discussion, but the master-servant relationship. The economic- philosophical turn in the irreconcilable opposition between capital and labor dominates the master-servant discussion since the 1840s until the publication of the Jena Hegel''s early writings. In practical politics it dominated until the collapse of the Soviet Union. The thesis begins with a state of the most important research published in Germany since 1931 discussion posts. As a result, the debate is carried out of the social philosophy in political philosophy. Not the socio-philosophical struggle for recognition, but the political and philosophical movement of recognition is the methodological guide through the last two centuries. It is a conflict-theoretical multi-stage model, which is here the investigation instrument for four prototypical thinkers of democratization and equality movements. G.W.F. Hegel, Karl Marx, Frantz Fanon and Simone de Beauvoir are still key witnesses, when it comes to legal reasoning, a classless society and humanity in which neither color nor sex are decisive for social and political position. Hegel, Marx, Fanon and de Beauvoir have designed their political philosophy with the thought of a movement of recognition. In the outlook, the movement is described as a highly detailed political analysis tool for thinking and concept formation. The work is for political theorists and practicians without much prior knowledge who want to acquire the recognition discussion profitable. It is one of the most important sources of European political philosophy.

Abstract: The article discusses how post-2004 Polish immigrants in Great Britain narrate success and failure in their lives. It identifies and analyses inter-related narrations specific to the transnational form of migration. It considers migrants’ transnational orientation as a resource for narratively producing a successful biography. The article makes use of a biographical perspective and embeds the analysis in theories of biographical action, while adding new knowledge to the scholarship of migration. It argues that failure is relative to a normatively, locally fixed expectation of success.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore how classic upstream-downstream conflicts of water resources management can be interpreted more broadly in terms of spatial misfits and disparities between the river basin, territorial jurisdictions, degrees of political influence and socio-economic conditions. It applies the analytical concept of spatial fit in order to explore issues of governance in managing water in the Dongjiang River basin, selected by virtue of the huge political and economic asymmetries existing between the upstream Jiangxi Province and the downstream Pearl River delta region. Using the concept of spatial fit, the paper explores the complex environmental, socio-economic and political geographies which frame the interdependencies of water use and management within the river basin. It analyses attempts by stakeholders at different levels and locations in the basin to advance their own water-related interests and the initiatives some are developing to share benefits and costs more equitably across the basin.

Abstract: A people who lived on the brink of the abyss and buried their dead on sheer cliffs, defying all logic ... the Chachapoya culture flourished between 800 and 1500 AD in northern Peru, at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters. No one knows for sure whether the Chachapoyas came out of the jungles or the mountains, but they settled in a place that seems impossibly difficult to live in: the mountainous fringes of the Peruvian jungle. An Explora Films team made up of specialists in high-risk film shoots, speleologists, mountain rescue experts, and archaeologists has reached the depths of Chachapoya territory to study their habits and customs. This group of specialists has explored the funerary 'chulpas,' or tombs, located on the sheer walls of the region's towering cliffs. The unimaginable constructions, enigmatic paintings and rock carvings, mummies that appear to communicate encrypted messages, and mysterious sarcophagi perched on rocky ledges have been examined by the archaeologists on the expedition. Looking for answers, this documentary shines a light on many of the unexplained mysteries hidden in the mountains and canyons of the Chachapoyas.

Abstract: Samucha lives in the mountains of Tusheti, a tiny region in Georgia on the border with Chechnya. Proud and brave, Samucha looks like an American cowboy. He's a fabulous horse rider, a shepherd, a musician, singer, and storyteller. This year, like every springtime, Samucha migrates with his flock of 2,000 sheep to reach the high plains of the Caucasus, located at an altitude of 4000 meters. But he feels tired and old. After this season, it will finally be time for him to retire. He will spend the summer on the plateau accompanied by his two sons, David and Kwiria, to whom he will hand over his herd. Their time has come to be true Caucasian shepherds like their father and he hopes they will be worthy enough to perpetuate the traditions of their ancestors.

Abstract: Ideas about health are reinforced by institutions and their corresponding practices, such as donning a patient's gown in a hospital or prostrating before a healing shrine. Even though we are socialized into regarding such ideologies as "natural" and unproblematic, we sometimes seek to bypass, circumvent, or even transcend the dominant ideologies of our cultures as they are manifested in the institutions of health care. The contributors to this volume describe such contestations and circumventions of health ideologies, and the blurring of therapeutic boundaries, on the basis of case studies from India, the South Asian Diaspora, and Europe, focusing on relations between body, mind, and spirit in a variety of situations. The result is not always the "live and let live" medical pluralism that is described in the literature.

Abstract: In the last decade, creativity has been promoted as the new key resource of urban development. From a governance perspective, the empirical-analytical inquiry focuses on the question how the ‘creative city’ has been translated into new governance processes and how creativity can be governed in cities. The empirical research draws on four governance arrangements between creative industries stakeholders and public bodies in Berlin and London and is based on an embedded multi-case-study-design with different qualitative methods such as interviews, content analysis and participant observation. These unfolding governance arrangements share objectively several productive features for success and policy innovation in that particular policy field: they combine a diversity of new actors and stakeholders in open and inclusive designs, exhibit passion and endurance of key actors, display a common interest and are matched by supportive, new strategic objectives from the two urban governments. Nevertheless, they also miss several features: a common frame of reference for defining a problem and for integrating disparate knowledge between all stakeholders, no prior cooperation experiences, hardly any financial resources, and eventually, a rather opportunistic and week commitment by urban governments. As in many other cities, the idea of a ‘creative city’ was rather used a ‘rhetorical device’ by urban politics to refashion existing policies instead of appropriate policy-making that supports cultural production in its multifaceted ways.

Abstract: Notions of skill are geographically and historically specific; migration regimes, professional regulations and national policies influence possibilities of effective validation of migrant knowledge abroad. Migration scholars convincingly demonstrate how migrants actively circumvent national requirements to fit into the dominant culture of the society of residence while preserving their own identities. Yet, without exception, social inequalities research exclusively addresses the integration of migrants into the receiving context, taking skills as a fixed attribute migrants simply ‘bring with them’. I argue that the context of origin of migrants for skill acquisition and validation during the migration process needs to be considered as well. The way skills are defined, acquired and valorised in the country of origin has an influence on how migrants mobilise them in the receiving society and on how they perceive their chances for negotiating strong positions in the labour market of the host country. The article draws on a study of Polish migrants to the UK with secondary and tertiary educational certificates who work in routine or semi-routine occupations.

Abstract: This paper presents the application of a methodological approach originally developed for urban planning to urban anthropology. This research approach focuses on different materialities in order to analyze functional zones, special areas and several categories of markers of up- and downgrading processes within a city. This focus on materialities and their integration patterns into urban space enables to make systematic comparisons between different areas within a city as well as between different cities. Using examples of transects carried out in two Southern Caucasian capitals – Baku (Azerbaijan) and Tbilisi (Georgia) – different ways of implementing a transect, collecting and recording the data are discussed.

Abstract: Strategies or decisions aimed at affecting, in a manner considered to be positive, the genetic heritage of a child in the context of human reproduction are increasingly being accepted in contemporary society. As a result, unnerving similarities between earlier selection ideology so central to the discredited eugenic regimes of the 20th century and those now on offer suggest that a new era of eugenics has dawned. The time is ripe, therefore, for considering and evaluating from an ethical perspective both current and future selection practices. This inter-disciplinary volume blends research from embryology, genetics, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and history. In so doing, it constructs a thorough picture of the procedures emerging from today's reproductive developments, including a rigorous ethical argumentation concerning the possible advantages and risks related to the new eugenics.

Abstract: A sea change has occurred in the Indian economy in the last three decades, spurring the desire to learn English. Most scholars and media venues have focused on English exclusively for its ties to processes of globalization and the rise of new employment opportunities.  The pursuit of class mobility, however, involves Hindi as much as English in the vast Hindi-Belt of northern India.  Schools are institutions on which class mobility depends, and they are divided by Hindi and English in the rubric of "medium," the primary language of pedagogy. This book demonstrates that the school division allows for different visions of what it means to belong to the nation and what is central and peripheral in the nation. It also shows how the language-medium division reverberates unevenly and unequally through the nation, and that schools illustrate the tensions brought on by economic liberalization and middle-class status.

Abstract: In spite of decades of research on toxicants, along with the growing role of scientific expertise in public policy and the unprecedented rise in the number of national and international institutions dealing with environmental health issues, problems surrounding contaminants and their effects on health have never appeared so important, sometimes to the point of appearing insurmountable. This calls for a reconsideration of the roles of scientific knowledge and expertise in the definition and management of toxic issues, which this book seeks to do. It looks at complex historical, social, and political dynamics, made up of public controversies, environmental and health crises, economic interests, and political responses, and demonstrates how and to what extent scientific knowledge about toxicants has been caught between scientific, economic, and political imperatives.

Abstract: Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in New York and Dakar, this book explores the Senegalese dance-rhythms Sabar from the research position of a dance student. It features a comparative analysis of the pedagogical techniques used in dance classes in New York and Dakar, which in turn shed light on different aesthetics and understandings of dance, as well as different ways of learning, in each context. Pointing to a loose network of teachers and students who travel between New York and Dakar around the practice of West African dance forms, the author discusses how this movement is maintained, what role the imagination plays in mobilizing participants and how the 'cultural flow' of the dances is 'punctuated' by national borders and socio-economic relationships. She explores the different meanings articulated around Sabar's transatlantic movement and examines how the dance floor provides the grounds for contested understandings, socio-economic relationships and broader discourses to be re-choreographed in each setting.

Abstract: The land, labor, credit, and trading institutions of Marmara village, in Hausaland, northern Nigeria, are detailed in this study through fieldwork conducted in two national economic cycles - the petroleum-boom prosperity (in 1977-1979), and the macro-economic decline (in 1985, 1996 and 1998). The book unveils a new paradigm of economic change in the West African savannah, demonstrating how rural accumulation in a polygynous society actually limits the extent of inequality while at the same time promoting technical change.  A uniquely African non-capitalist trajectory of accumulation subordinates the acquisition of capital to the expansion of polygynous families, clientage networks, and circles of trading friends.  The whole trajectory is driven by an indigenous ethics of personal responsibility. This model disputes the validity of both Marxian theories of capitalist transformation in Africa and the New Institutional Economics.

Abstract: The provocative title of this book is deliberately and challengingly universalist, matching the theoretically experimental essays, where contributors try different ideas to answer distinct concerns regarding cosmopolitanism. Leading anthropologists explore what cosmopolitanism means in the context of everyday life, variously viewing it as an aspect of kindness and empathy, as tolerance, hospitality and openness, and as a defining feature of pan-human individuality. The chapters thus advance an existential critique of abstract globalization discourse. The book enriches interdisciplinary debates about hitherto neglected aspects of contemporary cosmopolitanism as a political and moral project, examining the form of its lived effects and offering new ideas and case studies to work with.
