Zum anderen sollen mogliche gesellschaftliche wie politisch-institutionelle Uberwindungsszenarien von Gefuhlen der kulturellen und okonomischen Bedrohung erortert werden. Diese Untersuchung ist nicht allein nur aus praktischen und politischen Grunden von Bedeutung, sondern geschieht auch aus wissenschaftlichen Erwagungen heraus: Toleranz ist ein in der Offentlichkeit zwar oft und gerne bemuhter Ausdruck wunschenswerter sozialer Kohasion, die wissenschaftliche und insbesondere die empirisch-analytische Auseinandersetzung zu diesem Konzept weist jedoch erstaunliche Lucken außerhalb des US-amerikanischen Kontextes auf.

    Abstract: This book presents an accessible and sometimes controversial economic exploration of numerous issues surrounding sex, marriage and family. It analyses the role of 'vanity', defined as social status and self-esteem, in social and economic behaviours. In Veblen's theory of conspicuous consumption, vanity is associated with the consumption of luxuries such as expensive handbags and cars. In this book, C. Simon Fan provocatively argues that vanity is obtained by having a spouse and children with perceived 'high-quality' values, for example, a beautiful wife, a tall husband or intelligent offspring. He demonstrates from various perspectives that vanity plays a crucial role in male-female relationships and intergenerational relationships. In doing so, he challenges the conventional frontier of economics and contributes to other social sciences. This unique book will appeal to the educated general reader and interested academic alike.

    Abstract: Auch die mit humanitären Zielen begründeten Interventionen der jüngsten Vergangenheit haben die Vorbehalte nicht beseitigen können, die in der Friedensforschung gegen gewaltsame Interventionen in Drittstaaten bestehen. Vor dem Hintergrund einer größeren Interdependenz in einer globalisierten Welt, in der Regierungen universellen Normen unterliegen, stellt sich die Frage, mit welchen Mitteln zur Sicherung der Menschenrechte Einzelner und von Gemeinschaften interveniert werden sollte. Seitens der Friedensforschung steht eine Klärung dieser Frage noch aus. Ebenso wichtig ist der Aspekt, welche zivilen Alternativen zu militärischen Interventionen bestehen.     Abstract: This anthology examines the practical role of well-being in contemporary society. It discusses developments such as globalization, consumerism and the rapid innovation and use of new and emerging technologies and focuses on the significant impact of these developments on the well-being of people living today. The dissertation mainly dealt with the epistemology, ontology and ethics of virtual worlds, with a particular focus on their potential impact on personal well-being. Søraker's main research interests and publications lie in the intersections between Information Technology, on the one hand and both theoretical and practical philosophy, on the other. He often grounds his work in psychological research, especially work in the field of Positive Psychology and is developing this toward a comprehensive methodology entitled 'Prudential-Empirical Ethics of Technology (PEET)?.Jan-Willem van der Rijt is Lecturer in Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bayreuth. His work addresses issues related to the topics of freedom, happiness and dignity, and has appeared in journals such as Economics and Philosophy, Law and Philosophy, Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, and Theory and Decision. Van der Rijt is author of The Importance of Assent: A Theory of Coercion and Dignity (Springer 2012).Jelle de Boer is a lecturer in philosophy at Delft University of Technology. His interests are in philosophy of social science, ethics and social theory. His recent topics of research concerned game theory and well-being. He has recently published in Philosopical Psychology, Biology and Philosophy, and Economics and Philosophy.Pak-Hang Wong is a Research Fellow on Climate Geoengineering Governance at the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (InSIS) and Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford. He works primarily on philosophy and ethics of technology, but he is also interested in climate ethics, social theory, digital media studies, and science and technology studies.Philip Brey is professor of philosophy within the department of philosophy of the University of Twente. Combining literary analysis, legal history, and visual culture, Ellen Samuels traces the evolution of the "fantasy of identification"-the powerful belief that embodied social identities are fixed, verifiable, and visible through modern science. From birthmarks and fingerprints to blood quantum and DNA, she examines how this fantasy has circulated between cultural representations, law, science, and policy to become one of the most powerfully institutionalized ideologies of modern society.     Abstract: Mediatisierungsforschung beschaftigt sich mit der Frage, wie sich Alltag und Institutionen, Kultur und Gesellschaft dadurch wandeln, dass Menschen immer mehr mit und in Bezug auf Medien handeln und kommunizieren: Dieser Prozess wird hier Mediatisierung genannt, weil Kommunikation immer haufiger in medienvermittelter und mediatisierter Form stattfindet. Fur die empirische Untersuchung wird auf das Konzept der ?sozialen Welten" zuruckgegriffen - die verschiedenen Lebensbereiche wie Beruf und Familie, Unterhaltung und Fernsehen, Alltag und soziale Beziehungen, Politik und Lernen sind davon alle, aber auf unterschiedliche Weise betroffen. Im DFG-geforderten Schwerpunktprogramm ?Mediatisierte Welten" untersuchen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen diese Sachverhalte seit mehreren Jahren. In dem vorliegenden Band werden nun nicht primar empirische Befunde sondern ubergreifende theoretische Uberlegungen publiziert, die sich je auf Uberlegungen und empirische Ergebnisse aus unterschiedlichen Projekten und Disziplinen ergeben.

    Abstract: "The globalization of food consumption has often been equated with the loss of culinary traditions and the homogenization of cuisines. By contrast, the anthropologists, historians and sociologists contributing to this collection reveal both rapid changes and also profound and sometimes surprising continuities in local food consumption practices in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and use these to shed light on shifting social boundaries and cultural identities. The volume combines ethnographic, historical and comparative analyses, situating local practices of eating, cooking and sharing food within transnational processes and contexts. In so doing, the volume celebrates and furthers approaches developed in Jack Goody's seminal 1982 book, Cooking, Cuisine and Class: A Study in Comparative Sociology.
