Kurzfassung: "This book has been a long time in the making. In 2005, I was privileged to be awarded a personal chair in History by the University of Dundee, and at the 'Discovery Day' lecture series held for new chairs I gave a talk entitled, 'A Modest Defence of Gaming', the title plundered from a rare eighteenth-century pamphlet actually defending gambling. The talk was supposed to be a taster of the sorts of themes which I then thought would inform a new research project on gaming in Britain and its first empire between c.1660-1830. Very quickly thereafter, however, another research project, a major collaborative one on the provincial town in Enlightenment Scotland, took over the bulk of my attention, although I kept collecting material from various archives and keeping my eyes peeled for leads and helpful reading on gambling. Even when the project on Scottish provincial towns was completed, which was in 2014, I turned not to gambling but writing an account of the life of the later eighteenth century Scottish aristocratic republican radical, Lord Daer. Once gambling did become the main preoccupation of my research, it rapidly became clear that identifying further sources was not going to be easy, and these were going to be dispersed across many, geographically disparate collections. Confronted with this challenge, and the difficulties raised by framing a convincing study of gambling, my confidence in the project, it must be said, waned at points"--

Kurzfassung: "Endangered species conservation is a critical challenge for sustainable development. Although serious attempts are being made to reverse current trends, many species and their crucial habitats continue to be degraded and lost at alarming rates. Various international agreements, notably the venerable Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES), have aimed to regulate trade in listed species through the development of national frameworks and international collaborative measures. In spite of these initiatives, the implementation of international regulations remains a challenge for developing countries, especially for countries with limited scientific, human, technical and financial capacity and resources"--

Kurzfassung: Volume II surveys the history of fashion from the nineteenth-century to the present day. Covering the period beginning with mass industry and ending with calls for sustainability, this volume challenges the meaning of modernity and modernism from a global perspective and reflects on important scholarship that has changed our understanding of the relationship between fashion and colonialism. Empires shifted and new powers rose, with fashion marking and contending with this change. The volume concludes with a critical view of fashion and globalisation, and explores the deep connections between the fashion industry, the global economy, and the politics of production and wearing in the contemporary world

Kurzfassung: We often hear that our world 'is more multilingual than ever before', but is it true? This book shatters that cliché. It is the first volume to shine light on the millennia-long history of multilingualism as a social, institutional and demographic phenomenon. Its fifteen chapters, written in clear, accessible language by prominent historians, classicists, and sociolinguists, span the period from the third century BC to the present day, and range from ancient Rome and Egypt to medieval London and Jerusalem, from Russian, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires to modern Norway, Ukraine, and Spain. Going against the grain of traditional language histories, these thought-provoking case studies challenge stereotypical beliefs, foreground historic normativity of institutional multilingualism and language mixing, examine the transformation of polyglot societies into monolingual ones, and bring out the cognitive and affective dissonance in present-day orientations to multilingualism, where 'celebrations of linguistic diversity' coexist uneasily with creation of 'language police'.

Kurzfassung: "The aims of this volume are to rethink the history of social rights and, in doing so, help develop a historiography that speaks to the broader fields of human rights scholarship and practice. It is only very recently that a critical historiography on social rights has started to emerge, but it has yet to displace deeply rooted assumptions underpinning historical interpretations. These assumptions have, unfortunately, led to a number of distortions and misconceptions about the substance of these rights, their origins and their historical trajectories. There is a record to set straight before we can start re-imagining a more nuanced account of the long history of social rights, and this opening chapter tries to do that. First, it addresses how social rights have been misconstrued - both by sympathisers and sceptics. Second, it lays out a new approach to studying the long history of social rights, one in which the question of duties and obligations is central. Third, it presents the volume's three-prong structure and contents, which cover the medieval period to the present and span the globe. Taken together, the chapters of this volume seek to reshape the historiography of rights by examining the role and significance of social rights within it. They also explore the relation of these rights to questions about freedom, justice, equality and dignity in global history"--

Kurzfassung: "Investigating sites in colonial and postcolonial Calcutta, this book considers the wider politics and consequences of the modalities that both produce and regulate the street. It situates political economy as belonging not just to the domain of the government, the law, the planner's apparatus but parallelly to the domain of public action on the street. It studies, primarily, city-making by popular passions and public action on the streets. The book looks at the streets in motion through the eyes of the colonial and postcolonial city planners and of squatters who obstruct the movement of pedestrians and traffic. It qualifies the dialectic between the planner and the crowd by factoring in the aspect of city-planning being shaped by crowd action. The planner reorganizes demography through the building of thoroughfares while crowds shape planning by different varieties of occupation-occupation as community (authoritarian: Hindu aggregation of space through communal riots) and occupation as class (democratic: counter-pedestrianism of the street vendors). It thus presents an understanding of the social production of motion"--

Kurzfassung: "Archaeology, Nation, and Race is a must-read book for students of archaeology and adjacent fields. It demonstrates how archaeology and concepts of antiquity have shaped, and have been shaped by colonialism, race, and nationalism. Structured as a lucid and lively dialogue between two leading scholars, the volume compares modern Greece and modern Israel -- two prototypical and influential cases -- where archaeology sits at the very heart of the modern national imagination. Exchanging views on the foundational myths, moral economies, and racial prejudices in the field of archaeology and beyond, Hamilakis and Greenberg explore topics such as the colonial origins of national archaeologies, the crypto-colonization of the countries and their archaeologies, the role of archaeology as a process of purification, and the racialization and "whitening" of Greece and Israel and their archaeological and material heritage. They conclude with a call for decolonization and the need to forge alliances with subjugated communities and new political movements"--

Kurzfassung: "In the past decade, the Kurdish question has re-established itself at the heart of the regional political debates at a time when the Middle East is once again engulfed in conflict and violence. On numerous occasions during the second half of the 20th century, Kurdish nationalism has managed to generate and maintain strong appeal amongst Kurdish populations in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria, but these states have perceived Kurdish ambitions as a threat to their national security and regional stability. At the beginning of the 21st century, Kurdish political activism has reached a new height with Kurdish movements in Iraq, Turkey and Syria establishing themselves as important political actors in the domestic politics of these states. The consolidation of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq in 2005 and the establishment of a Kurdish de facto autonomous region within Syria in 2012 have turned the Kurds into actors capable of influencing regional political developments and resultantly enabled them to forge stronger relations with the international forces involved in the region. The rise of the pro- Kurdish movement in Turkish politics in the past two decades, especially its strong electoral performance in a number of elections since 2015, has placed the Kurds at the heart of the political developments in Turkey too"

Kurzfassung: "The history and historiography of Iran, as of the countries of the wider Middle East, have been dominated by the twin narratives of top-down, elite-driven and state-centred modernization, and methodological nationalism, the assumption that the geographical territory defined by the state and the population within its borders is the primary, and sometimes only, organizing principle for research and analysis. The chapters contained in this book seek to problematize both these narratives. Their attention is firmly on subaltern social groups, including the "dangerous classes," and their constructed contrast with the new and avowedly modern bourgeois elite created by the infant Pahlavi state; the hungry poor pitted against the deregulation and globalization of the late nineteenth century Iranian economy; rural criminals of every variety, bandits, smugglers and pirates, and the profoundly ambiguous attitudes towards them of the communities from which they came; slaves and the puzzle of their agency. The historical experience of these groups is also deployed in a much larger attempt to understand the wider societies of which they were a part and the nature of the political, economic and cultural authority to which they were subject. In particular they are counterpointed to the praxis of modernism, hegemonic across the world from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century and depicted here in all its astonishing ambition, reaching from the state itself into the deepest and most intimate layers of everyday life. In addition, and complementary, to this spotlight on subaltern lives, the chapters contained here seek to move beyond a narrow national context, seeking to demonstrate, through a series of case-studies, the explanatory power of global, transnational and comparative approaches to the study of the social history of the Middle East"--

It demonstrates how refugees' experiences, rather than being marginal, were emblematic of some of the principal developments in British society. Based on rich archival sources, this book explores how refugees from Nazism; Hungarians in 1956; Ugandan Asians expelled by Idi Amin; and Vietnamese 'boat people were received and settled in Britain. In doing so it reveals changing ideas of Britishness and the place of 'outsiders' in modern Britain. It also explores:"--

Kurzfassung: "A history of pastoral nomads in the Islamic Middle East from the rise of Islam, through the middle periods when Mongols and Turks ruled most of the region, to the decline of nomadism in the twentieth century. Offering a vivid insight into the impact of nomads on the politics, culture, and ideology of the region, Beatrice Forbes Manz examines and challenges existing perceptions of these nomads, including the popular cyclical model of nomadsettled interaction developed by Ibn Khaldun. Looking at both the Arab Bedouin and the nomads from the Eurasian steppe, Manz demonstrates the significance of Bedouin and Turco-Mongolian contributions to cultural production and political ideology in the Middle East, and shows the central role played by pastoral nomads in war, trade, and state-building throughout history. Nomads provided horses and soldiers for war, the livestock and guidance which made long-distance trade possible, and animal products to provision the region's growing cities"--

Kurzfassung: "The twenty-four women discussed in these chapters constitute a collective biography that narrates the history of emancipation as experienced by women of African descent in the western hemisphere. As If She Were Free articulates this individual and collective struggle - in which African descended women spoke and acted in ways that declared that they had a right to determine the course of their lives. African descended women sought out freedom from the moment they arrived on the shores of the Americas in the sixteenth century. For the next four centuries, enslaved women measured freedom in degrees, claimed it in stages, and experienced it multidimensional ways. For some women, freedom meant legal protection from slavery, while, for others, something akin to freedom was experienced in the context of a family, a community, or a political association. More than simply deliverance from slavery; emancipation was liberation from civil or other restraints; and it included efforts to gain economic, personal, political, and social rights. On all of these fronts, women emancipated themselves. In telling their stories, As If She Were Free articulates a new feminist history of freedom"--

Kurzfassung: "Decolonisation in 1947 promised a better life for India's peasants, workers, students, Dalits and religious minorities. However, social justice remained a distant dream even in the 1970s. These diverse groups fought and mobilised movements to achieve what was promised at independence, and in response, the ruling government under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended the Constitution, declared Emergency and, with it, curtailed civil liberties. The hope of decolonisation that had turned to disillusion in the postcolonial period quickly descended into a nightmare. In this book, Kristin Plys recounts the little-known story of the resistance movement against the Emergency that brewed in New Delhi's Indian Coffee House. Created by British plantation owners to weather the empire-wide export commodity surplus crisis of the 1930s, the Indian Coffee House was occupied by its workers in 1946, and eventually transformed into a cooperative as part of an anti-colonial and anti-capitalist workers' movement. By the 1970s, the Indian Coffee House became more than an economic intervention into the processes of capitalism and empire-it transformed into a radical space where politically and artistically driven intellectuals of various persuasions and viewpoints gathered to resist the Emergency. Based on newly uncovered evidence and oral histories of the people who mobilized the movement against the Emergency, this book fills a major lacuna in the sphere of academic writing on one of the most shocking and darkest chapters of India's democratic history"--

Kurzfassung: "This book examines networks of lawyers, legislators and litigators, and how they shaped legal development in Britain and the world. It explores how particular networks of lawyers - from Scotland to East Florida and India - shaped the culture of the forums in which they operated, and how - as with twentieth century feminist campaigns - personal connections could be crucial in pressuring the legislature to institute reform. It explores the transmission of legal ideas and practices from one location to another, across time and space. What happened to those ideas and practices was not predetermined, but when new connections were made, they could assume a new life. In some cases new thinkers made intellectual connections not previously thought of; in others it was the new purposes to which ideas and practices were applied which made them adapt"--

Kurzfassung: "Hunting Game Northeastern Central African Republic -- a vast space bordering Chad, Darfur, and South Sudan -- is a quintessential "stateless" space, where the government has little presence and armed actors operate freely. In this first ethnographic and historical study of Central African raiding, Louisa Lombard investigates practices of forceful acquisition, a distinctive political repertoire in which claims to social status are linked to the ability to take (from wild spaces, or from others) and are frequently overturned. People have developed raiding skills to survive and live in a stateless borderland for over 150 years. From the trans-Saharan slave trade, to colonial forced labour regimes, big game hunting and coercive conservation, to rebellion, raiding has flourished where people's status in relation to each other is unclear and where institutional guidance is absent. Hunting Game offers rich comparative insights into the vibrant, if not always salutary, role that forceful acquisition plays in the world today"--

Through the examination of multiple historical case studies, and use of extensive historical examples to explore a range of revolutions, Mehran Kamrava reveals the range and depth of human emotion and motivations that are so prevalent and consequential in revolutions, from personal commitment to sacrifice, determination, leadership ability, charisma, opportunism, and avarice.

Kurzfassung: "The book aims at studying processes of religious change in India. The focus lies neither on any particular religious tradition, nor is it the aim to provide an encyclopaedic overview of conversion in different religious traditions. Instead, the studies presented here investigate the different modalities of religious change across and within religious traditions. In order to understand the different patterns involved, diverse cases are scrutinised. The cases are diverse in different ways. First, they discuss different religious traditions (Hindu traditions and sects, Christianity, Islam and indigenous religions). Second, they cover most regions of India. Third, the chapters discuss historical as well as contemporary examples. Finally, the different cases involve micro, meso and macro dynamics of religious change in different ways, dealing with large-scale political processes of colonialism and nationalism, dimensions of social structure in relation to conversion and subjective meanings of and motives for conversion. In this way, the book seeks to do justice to the complexity of the phenomenon under study, a complexity that is also reflected in the multivalence and multidirectionality of the trope of Godroads, which is introduced here as a heuristic metaphor. Studying modalities of conversion means for the authors of this volume to identify patterns of the processes studied. To this aim, the comprehensive introduction provides, next to an overview of the relevant literature, a thorough discussion of theoretical approaches that attend in particular to structures in these (sudden or continuous) dynamics of religious change. The afterword by the Brazilian anthropologist Aparecida Vilaça, a specialist on conversion in the Amazon region, extends the comparative scope beyond India"--
