And recently, popular books and magazines have turned their gaze away from ways of positively influencing girls' independence and self-esteem and towards the topic of girls' meanness to other girls. What does this say about the way our culture views girlhood? How much do these portrayals affect the ways girls view themselves?" "In Girlfighting, psychologist and educator Lyn Mikel Brown scrutinizes the way our culture nurtures and reinforces this sort of meanness in girls. She argues that the old adage "girls will be girls" - gossipy, competitive, cliquish, backstabbing - and the idea that fighting is part of a developmental stage or a rite of passage, are not acceptable explanations. Instead, she asserts, girls are discouraged from expressing strong feelings and are pressured to fulfill unrealistic expectations, to be popular, and struggle to find their way in a society that still reinforces narrow gender stereotypes.     Kurzfassung: Räumliche Mobilität ist eine Signatur der modernen Weltgesellschaft, und die Zahl derjenigen, die ihre Heimat verlassen, um für eine begrenzte Zeit im Ausland zu leben und zu arbeiten, nimmt stetig zu. Obwohl die Gruppe der so genannten »Expatriates« im Globalisierungsprozess unbestritten eine Schlüsselposition einnimmt, sind ihre besonderen Lebensbedingungen bislang kaum untersucht worden. Die Studie »Heimat auf Zeit« beleuchtet die bei den »Expats« vorgefundenen praktischen Dimensionen von Globalisierung im Alltag am Beispiel der syrischen Hauptstadt Damaskus. Dabei entsteht ein detailreiches Bild der global-lokalen Expat-Gemeinschaft und der individuellen Anstrengungen von Frauen, für sich und ihre Familien eine »Heimat auf Zeit« zu schaffen

    Anmerkung: Wir leben in einer Zeit grundlegenden, vielfältigen und schnellen Wandels, in dessen Verlauf sich auch die Bedeutung der Kommunikationsmedien verändert. Es ist das Anliegen des vorliegenden Bandes, einen Metaprozeß "Mediatisierung von Kommunikation" theoretisch zu entwerfen und zu begründen, mit dem dieser gesellschaftliche Wandel analysiert werden kann. Der Band beruft sich dabei auf empirischen Studien über die computervermittelte Kommunikation und über die Weiterentwicklung der "alten" Medien. So wird über das Vordringen des Fernsehens in öffentliche Räume und dessen Konsequenzen berichtet - in U-Bahnen und Kneipen, in Lifestyle-Geschäfte und Wartesäle, als neue Form von Schulfernsehen, Business TV und place based TV. In Bezug auf diese empirischen Grundlagen wird ein handlungstheoretisch-konstruktivistisches Konzept von "Mediatisierung" entwickelt, in dessen Perspektive sich Einzelbeobachtungen, Ergebnisse empirischer Arbeiten und kommunikations- und medienwissenschaftliche Theoriestücke fruchtbar zusammendenken lassen. Zudem wird der Prozeß der Mediatisierung in seinem Verhältnis zu Individualisierung, Globalisierung und Zivilisation (im Sinne Elias') disktuiert
