Abstract: "This will be the first major loan exhibition in North America to focus on the artistic tradition inspired by Japan's most celebrated work of literature, The Tale of Genji. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the early eleventh-century imperial court, and often referred to as the world's first psychological novel, the tale recounts the amorous escapades of the "Shining Prince" Genji and introduces some of the most iconic female characters in the history of Japanese literature. Covering the period from the eleventh century to the present, the exhibition will feature more than 120 works, including paintings, calligraphy, silk robes, lacquer wedding set items, a palanquin for the shogun's bride, and popular art such as ukiyo-e prints and modern manga. Highlights include two National Treasures and several works recognized as Important Cultural Properties. For the first time ever outside Japan, rare works will be on view from Ishiyamadera Temple—where, according to legend, Shikibu started writing the tale." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Abstract: The African art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, offers a portal into the life and politics of a large and complex continent with a wealth of history and culture. The highlighted works in this volume have been selected to illuminate different societies and periods, and to offer an introduction to traditions within the wider field of African art. They are presented through the framework of their original contexts: refined bronze sculptures made for royal palaces, spiritual figures powerfully rendered in wood or stone for shrines, vibrant luxury textiles, masks for public celebrations, art made for export and trenchant contemporary photography intended for global art markets. By examining the places where these objects were first encountered by viewers--the palaces of Mangbetu kings, the busy streets of Lagos or a gallery in London--vivid stories emerge about who made, paid for, used and enjoyed these artworks

Abstract: Le site de l'exposition indique : "Jarracharra: dry season wind showcases a powerful collection of Aboriginal women's textile art from the Maningrida region in Western Arnhem Land, Australia. This exhibition features women pushing artistic barriers to depict ancient narratives using contemporary mediums. Women's deep and intrinsic cultural knowledge runs through all the works in this exhibition. Jarracharra is the powerful cool wind that blows across Arnhem Land each dry season, signifying the beginning of a period of exchange between clans and an annual ceremonial coming together. Jarracharra, a term in the Burarra language, represents a metaphor for the way the Bábbarra Women's Centre brings together different Aboriginal cultures and stories from across Arnhem Land. The exhibition presents a rich variety of textile designs from a range of Bábbarra eras. The works hang together cohesively as one body, in the same manner diverse artists operate together at Bábbarra as one family. The artists featured in Jarracharra often speak or understand more than six living Aboriginal languages, and have complex social and ceremonial links with all neighbouring groups. The majority of artists in this exhibition are Kuninjku; however, there are also artists from the Gurr-goni, Ndjébbana, Mawng, Burarra, Djambarrpuyngu, Djinang, Rembarrnga, Kriol and Kune languages."

Abstract: Klappentext: The complex history of imaging Africa, as seen in its postcard industry... During the global postcard craze that peaked around 1900 and continued for several decades thereafter, photographers in Africa grasped the opportunity to serve a lucrative market for images of the continent, both locally and worldwide. Their picture postcards now contribute to understanding political and cultural changes in Africa at the time, as the rise of the new medium coincided with the expansion and consolidation of colonial rule. They also provide a way to reconstruct the life and work of the photographers of European, African and other backgrounds who created these images - which often survive only in postcard form - and in some cases published them as well. The cards were produced for residents and travelers in Africa, as well as for buyers and collectors who had never set foot on the continent. Their depictions of colonial administrations and the exploitation of resources and peoples, as well as images inscribing tribal identities and racial classifications, often reflect the colonizers' worldview. Yet it is also possible to recover the authorship of some of the African women and men who participated in these photographic encounters. For instance, some cards show that members of Africa's elites recognized the power of photographic images to enhance their standing and present their own narratives. "Postcards from Africa" reproduces a generous selection of these complex cards - the majority drawn from the extensive Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Archive at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston - accompanied by a leading scholar's exploration of the complicated stories they tell.

Abstract: Among world religions, only Buddhism and Christianity attach a central significance to the role of relics. These two traditions, however, are different in both conceptual and material terms. In Buddhism, the most sacred relics are those considered parts of the cremated remains of the Buddha - a hair, a tooth, a small fragment of bone - or the tiny bead-like relics generated by the Buddha before entering nirvana. In contrast, Christianity venerates objects associated with Christ such as the thorns, the cross or his robe. This first generation of relics were later joined by both the bodily relics and items used by the saints. The papers in this volume, the culmination of a research project focussing on relic worship and Buddhism, cover a rich variety of themes. Subjects include a discussion of what constitutes a relic according to primary and secondary sources, as well as an analysis of the special terminology related to relic worship. Other chapters focus on the placement and treatment of relics in situ, in addition to the wider archaeological contexts for relics, relic chambers and reliquaries. New perspectives are also offered on the relics and reliquaries themselves, for example, the golden Bimaran casket from Afghanistan, an exceptional example of metalwork from the 1st century AD. The final chapter explores the spread of Buddhism to Burma and the evidence of the vibrant relic culture that has been found there, including some of the oldest surviving Pali inscriptions in the world, a text on gold leaves deposited in a relic chamber

Abstract: An exceptional overview of the experimental, political, and participatory artwork of an important, iconoclastic Latin American artist Lygia Pape (1927-2004) was an influential Brazilian artist and pioneering member of the postwar avant-garde. She worked across an expansive range of media, including painting, drawing, prints, sculpture, film, performance, poetry, and installation, and her art is now exhibited worldwide. This handsome book provides an extensive examination of her lengthy, prolific career. Pape embraced the ideals of Concrete art and geometric abstraction early on, and later was an active participant in the Neo Concrete movement that championed experimentation and chance. During this time, she created participatory works that questioned the space between artist and viewer, as well as the social context of art itself. Featuring essays from art historians in both North and South America, an illustrated chronology, and two previously untranslated interviews with the artist, Lygia Pape is a testament to Pape's lasting importance to the modern art and culture of Latin America and to her position as a major figure of the international avant-garde. Abstract: "In 1967, the phrase "flower power" transformed the commonplace flower into a Buddhist-inspired symbol of peace. In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of San Francisco's Summer of Love, this book showcases the expressive powers of flowers in Asian arts and cultures. Beginning in ancient times, a language of flowers, where certain blooms suggest specific themes, was communicated in art throughout Asia. Here forty artworks, all drawn from the Asian Art Museum's renowned collection, focus on six celebrated flowers--lotus, plum blossom, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, tulip, and rose--and the messages they convey"--

Abstract: The project takes its name from the demand for the transfer of power and other things to the newly independent Indonesia in 1945. It travels through time, from European colonial occupation through the development of the republican state to the trans-national contemporary cultures of today. It looks at the various international exchanges that happened in the territories of contemporary Indonesia through the images and ideas of artists. These exchanges were of different kinds: trade, culture, religion, ideology and war. They produced different results: violence; oppression; racism; creativity; spiritual awakening; and other things. The ideologies and struggles of modernity are common ways in which Indonesia has been depicted by others and has also defined itself over the period. As this modern period recedes into history, the project will seek ways to remember how it has influenced contemporary understanding and ask the current generation of artists to look back in order to rewrite the past and potentially create the conditions for a different future. Abstract: Heinz Mack unternimmt seit 1955 künstlerische Expeditionen in die Wüsten Afrikas.

Abstract: Dorset Seen' looks at how 20 Kinngait artists, past and present, have represented their lives and community over the last sixty years. Featuring 48 drawings and 22 sculptures, this superbly illustrated publication does not focus exclusively on the contemporary, nor does it equate earlier artists with ideas of ?tradition.? Kinngait?s artists have always been inspired by their everyday lives, regardless of aesthetic conventions or market pressures. The artists tackle Christianity and colonialism, the Hudson Bay Company and the RCMP, family and sport, architecture and community development, technology and transport, alcoholism and suicide. 00Exhibition: Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa, Canada (02.04.-02.06.2013)

Abstract: Raghubir Singh (1942-1999) was a pioneer of color street photography who worked and published prolifically from the late 1960s until his death in 1999 at age 56. His vivid, intensely hued photographs capture rural and urban India and iconic depictions of Indian culture though a truly cosmopolitan approach that succeeded in blending East and West. This richly illustrated volume studies in depth the full breadth of Singh's work, situating it at the intersection of Western Modernism and traditional South Asian modes of picturing the world. The book showcases 90 of his photographs, including some previously unpublished images, in counterpoint both with the work of his contemporaries and with images of traditional South Asian artworks that inspired his practice

Abstract: "Emperors' Treasures features artworks from the renowned National Palace Museum, Taipei. It encompasses paintings, calligraphy, bronzes, ceramics, lacquer ware, jades, and textiles exemplifying the finest craftsmanship and imperial taste. The Chinese art book book explores the identities of eight Chinese rulers--seven emperors and one empress--who reigned from the early 12th through early 20th centuries. They are portrayed in a story line that highlights artworks of their eras, from the dignified Song to the coarse yet subtle Yuan, and from the brilliant Ming until the final, dazzling Qing period. Emperors' Treasures examines each ruler's distinct contribution to the arts and how each developed his or her aesthetic and connoisseurship"--

Abstract: Drawn from a unique collection held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this book includes 62 bark paintings produced in the 1950s, as well as woven forms, paperbark objects, carved wooden figures and feathered body ornamentation. Together with essays on the artists, the art and the history of Milingimbi, and historic and contemporary photographs, Art from Milingimbi provides readers with a unique insight into the artists, their culture and their connectedness to place. While there has been great interest in art from western and north-eastern Arnhem Land and Ramingining, there has been little written or published on the exemplary art of Milingimbi. With new research conducted in collaboration with the Milingimbi community, this book is the first publication about Milingimbi and the exemplary artists working there in the 1950s. These artists actively engaged with the art market and generously depicted the complexities of Yolngu culture in their works. Many works refer to the highly valued commodity of sugarbag or honey and depict the related clan designs. Other evocative works refer to environmental events, such as rain falling in the trees or animals waiting in anticipation for the rains to come

Abstract: "Exploring the topic of narrativity in Indian art, this beautiful and deeply researched book considers illustrations to the Bhagavata Purana, the Ramayana, the Ragamala, and a range of texts in the Persian language, notably the Shahnama. Featuring stunning reproductions of paintings made between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries from the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, the publication includes thorough and fascinating explanations of the narrative of each text, including how that narrative is visually conveyed. Essays examine why these particular stories are so enduring, why patrons may have chosen to have a copy of a particular text made for their own collections, and how artists responded to the challenge of creating new versions of venerable classics"--

Abstract: "This book commemorates the gift of over 400 works from the collection of Barbara and David Kipper to the Art Institute of Chicago. These outstanding pieces of jewelry and ritual objects offer a material record of vanishing ways of life. Used as portable forms of wealth, as personal adornment, and in religious practice, they represent a broad spectrum of cultures. The majority comes from the Himalayan region, including Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and Mongolia, and other pieces hail from Afghanistan, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The works include delicate amulet boxes, other Tibetan Buddhist artifacts, and ornate Turkmen jewelry. Five essays place the objects in the contexts of their native regions"

Abstract: "Particularly distinguished for paintings made for the Indian royal courts between the 16th and 19th centuries, the Kronos Collections feature brilliantly colored works characterized by powerful depictions of scenes from Hindu epics, mystical legends, and courtly life. The nearly 100 works in this catalogue--many of them illustrated here for the first time--represent a new way of seeking the divine through a form of personal devotion that had permeated India's Hindu community. While explaining the gods, demons, lovers, fantastical creatures, and mystical symbols central to Rajput literature and worship, this publication celebrates the diverse styles and traditions of Indian painting. Divine Pleasures presents a nuanced view of a way of life intimately tied to the seasons, the arts, and the spiritual"--

Abstract: "Global exploration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to new interactions between Europe and Asia. Jesuit priests were instrumental in spreading knowledge of the world to China and information about China to Europe. China at the Center focuses on two masterpieces of seventeenth-century map-making that illustrate this exchange of information (and misinformation). The first map is the Kunyu wanguo quantu, or Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth, also known as the 1602 Ricci map, after Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit priest who helped create it. The second is the 1674 Verbiest world map, which was also made by a Jesuit priest, Ferdinand Verbiest, for the Chinese court. These two maps are among the earliest, rarest, and largest woodblock-printed maps to survive from the period. They will be examined through the lens of the development of cartography in China and through the biographies of the fascinating men who were instrumental in their production. Maps are political objects, and the inclusion of elaborate and extensive notations on both these maps illustrate the fascinating relationships between the Jesuits and the Chinese courts. These maps represent the meeting of two worldviews, and the information they contain provided Europeans with greater knowledge of China and the Chinese with new ideas about geography, astronomy, and the natural sciences. This book accompanies the exhibition China at the Center, at the Asian Art Museum March 4-May 8, 2016, which brings together the 1602 Ricci map from the James Ford Bell Trust in Minneapolis and the 1674 Verbiest map from the Library of Congress in Washington D.C"--

Abstract: "Exhibition catalogue for The Rama Epic--recounting the struggle of Prince Rama to defeat a powerful demonic king, rescue his abducted wife and reestablish virtuous order in the world. The epic has been a prime subject for visual and performing arts, literature and religious thought in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia for many centuries. A huge number of artworks of all kinds relating to the Rama legends have been made over the course of 1500 years in a dozen countries. This book illustrates some of the most important episodes involving the four primary characters: the hero, Rama; the heroine, Rama's wife Sita; the ally, Rama's faithful monkey lieutenant Hanuman; and the foe, the ten-headed demon king Ravana. The catalogue tells the story in a new light using more than 130 artworks, ranging from paintings to puppets to decorative arts to contemporary works to ephemera, inviting readers to find echoes of their own experiences in the stories and dilemmas of each of the characters"--

Abstract: Artist's statement / Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun -- Sovereign rainbows and unceded territories : a curatorial dialogue / Tania Willard & Karen Duffek -- A free state of mind zone / Lucy R. Lippard -- Social forms of engagement : coffee with Yuxweluptun on the main street side of Gene / Michael Turner -- New cultural practices, 1900-1926 : a photo essay / Marcia Crosby -- Bekkah and son, and Elpidio / Jimmie Durham -- Take no prisoners : the performance art of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun / Glenn Alteen.
Abstract: "Unceded Territories is a major and timely review of the work of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, spanning thirty years of his painterly and polemical practice. It places the artist's concerns in dialogue with this moment in our shared histories. An artist of Cowichan and Okanagan descent, Yuxweluptun lives and works on unceded Coast Salish territories in Vancouver, British Columbia. He calls himself a history painter, a monumentalist, a modernist. Impassioned in his commitment to advance First Nations rights to the land and effect change, Yuxweluptun fuses art with political action--he "paints freedom and equality". This retrospective includes brilliant commentary from Michael Turner, Lucy Lippard, Marcia Crosby, Glenn Alteen, a short-story by Jimmie Durham. In an extensive dialogue, curators Karen Duffek and Tania Willard discuss the meaning of Yuxweluptun's practice and place it in the context of the First Nations struggle for autonomy, justice, and environmental preservation. In a searing and powerful artist's statement, Yuxweluptun himself explains the essence of his painting and the forces that drive his artistic and political life. Published to accompany the exhibition at the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology this volume includes 65 of Yuxweluptun's paintings from the last three decades and will be a lasting document of his art and activism."--

Abstract: "A new wave of African creatives is on the rise and making a name for itself in design, fashion, photography, and architecture across Africa and abroad. While colors, patterns, and crafts are profoundly rooted in African tradition, young designers infuse their creations with a delightfully discordant edge making them contemporary, unique, and truly authentic pieces of African design."--back cover
Abstract: Africa's young, self-confident creative scene is attracting worldwide attention and its work is showing the continent in a new light. Its dynamic design and fashion, as well as the products of its other creative industries, constantly surprise with their unique combination of innovation and tradition. African design, like hat of other regions, often reflects or acts as a catalyst for social and economic developments. Interdisciplinary artists such as Die Antwoord and Xander Ferreira have made names for themselves well beyond Africa's borders. Their work and that of their contemporaries redefines African creativity and calls stereotypes and clichés into question. 'Africa Rising' is a compelling exploration of this scene's talented pioneers and their outstanding projects

Abstract: "From the 1870s to the early twentieth century, the Bohemian immigrant artist Gottfried Lindauer travelled to marae and rural towns around New Zealand and – commissioned by Māori and Pākehā – captured in paint the images of key Māori figures. The book presents 67 major portraits and 8 genre paintings alongside detailed accounts of the subject and work, followed by essays by leading scholars that take us inside Lindauer and his world: from his artistic training in Bohemia to his travels around New Zealand as Māori and Pākehā commissioned him to paint portraits; his artistic techniques and deep relationship with photography; Henry Partridge’s gallery of Lindauer works on Queen Street in Auckland where Māori visited to see their ancestors; and the afterlife of the paintings in marae and memory"--Publisher information

Abstract: When the Spanish conquistador Francisco de Orellana set out on his search for cinnamon in 1541, he could not have anticipated that his travels would bring him to the bends of the world?s longest river: the Amazon. Long a witness to evangelization campaigns, infrastructure development, and natural resource extraction, the river continues to arouse greed, competition, and fascination in its visitors. Following in the footsteps of past expeditions, The Jungle Book is a visual experience comprising discreetly staged scenes that reveal the diverse worlds of contemporary Amazonia and its surrounding areas. Photographer Yann Gross worked with different local communities and documented the dynamic culture of the Amazon as influenced by contemporary economic and social forces. Once immersed in this world, the viewer soon forgets romantic clichés of forgotten lands and noble savages, and begins to question the guiding ideals of progress and development that inform escapist fantasies. 0Exhibition: Arles Foto Festival, France (04.07.-25.09.2016). 0
