    Kurzfassung: Schneidende und stechende Werkzeuge, vom Messer bis zur Schere, Beil und Axt, und Hieb- und Stichwaffen wie Schwert, Säbel und Dolch sind in populären Volkserzählungen, insbesondere in Sage, Märchen und Schwank, unentbehrlich und als Reflex der in ihnen gespiegelten Lebenswirklichkeit fast allgegenwärtig. Die Texte und die ihnen gewidmete Forschung behandeln sie auffällig beiläufig, fast geringschätzig. Die zutreffende Bewertung ihrer Rolle setzt eine umfassende Bestandsaufnahme und den Vergleich ihrer Erscheinungsformen voraus. Die hiermit vorgelegte Bestandsaufnahme berücksichtigt ausgehend von den Märchen und Sagen des Altertums, des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit auch das europäische und das deutsche Kunstmärchen. Über 140 ausgewertete Sammelwerke dürften einen repräsentativen Überblick ermöglicht haben. Populäre Erzählungen fast aller Zeiten und Völker, insbesondere aber Märchen, schildern Zerstückelungen von Menschen und Tieren, vor allem Enthauptungen, was zu intensiven Diskussionen über die Zuträglichkeit solcher Themen nicht nur für Kinder führt. Die bisherigen Deutungen des Phänomens werden gesichtet, ergänzt und erweitert. Als wesentliche Funktionen schneidender und stechender Geräte kommen die des schlichten Werkzeuges in Betracht, die des Verbrechenswerkzeuges, aber auch – nicht selten als Teil einer magischen Dreiheit – die als Träger dieser Magie, als Brücke in das Reich des Jenseitigen und nicht zuletzt als Manifestation des Unbewussten. Linien in die Gegenwart volkstümlicher Literatur schließen die Gesamtschau ab.

    Kurzfassung: The Kashubs, a regional autochthonous group inhabiting northern Poland, represent one of the most dynamic ethnic groups in Europe. As a community, they have undergone significant political, social, economic and cultural change over the last hundred years. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Kashubs were citizens of Germany. In the period between the two World Wars they were divided between three political entities: the Republic of Poland, the Free City of Danzig and Germany. During the Second World War, many Kashubs were murdered, and communist Poland subsequently tried to destroy the social ties that bound the community together. The year 1989 finally brought about a democratic breakthrough, at which point the Kashubs became actively engaged in the construction of their regional identity, with the Kashubian language performing a particularly important role. This volume is the first scholarly monograph on the history, culture and language of the Kashubs to be published in English since 1935. The book systematically explores the most important aspects of Kashubian identity – national, regional, linguistic, cultural and religious – from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

    Kurzfassung: America Where? Transatlantic Views of the United States in the Twenty-first Century gathers essays by distinguished American Studies scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. The articles address changing representations of ‘America’ in their many and mutual transnational exchanges, both in the Americas and in Europe. Atlanticism, neo-liberalism, transnationalism, borders, racism, prisons, labor, war and intercultural relations compose the range of approaches to be found in this book. While paying close attention to the geopolitical, social, and cultural fabric of the United States as a nation in its intercultural, cross-border time-spaces, this work brings to question the location of ‘America’ in our time. How does this ‘America’ – both the material, secular nation in the economic and political world, and the mythical, sacred, and spiritual entity, enormously charged with symbolic power – present itself today in the Western and Eastern Hemispheres? The book’s provisional answer is that the most productive «America» is to be found in the conversations that the cultures of the United States encourage and engage in, both nationally and internationally.

    Kurzfassung: Die Beschreibung der alpinen Natur und Bevölkerung ist im Allgemeinen verbunden mit dem Selbstverständnis und sozialen Umfeld des Autors. Daraus folgt, dass der Alpendiskurs von Land zu Land stärker differiert als bisher angenommen. Dieser Forschungsbericht befasst sich mit der Wahrnehmung der Alpen in der europäischen Kulturgeschichte. Er schliesst auch die bisher vernachlässigten alpinen Stimmen in die Untersuchung ein. Wie ging die Bevölkerung im Berggebiet mit den Diskursen um, die von den Städten an sie herangetragen wurden? Legte sie sich Identitäten zu, die das Alpine zurückstellten oder gerade betonten? La description de la nature et de la population alpines est en général liée aussi bien à l’image que les auteurs se font d’eux-mêmes qu’à leur milieu social. Cela explique que le discours alpin diffère davantage selon les pays que ce qui a été considéré jusqu’ici. Ce recueil de contributions se penche sur la perception des Alpes dans l’histoire de la culture européenne. Il intègre dans la recherche les voix alpines négligées jusqu’à présent. Comment a réagi la population de ces régions aux discours sur la montagne et les montagnards tenus par les gens de la plaine ?     Kurzfassung: The early twenty-first century is witnessing a paradigm shift across the humanities away from an obsession with language and towards an engagement with the way in which physical space is imagined. This book showcases the impact of that shift upon the work of diverse disciplines. Applying insights from architecture and geography, which have long addressed space, to disciplines that have traditionally focused upon images and language, the contributors demonstrate how integral space is to literary as well as artistic imagining and identity at the same time that they propose novel ways of capturing and documenting spatial experience. The thirteen contributors to the book, most of whom live and work in Ireland and are associated with a range of different disciplines in Irish universities, show how the construction and representation of space, both real and imagined, contributes to the exploration of contemporary concerns such as identity, belonging and memory. The result is a snapshot of the ways in which contemporary Irish academia is addressing one of the most important new directions in interdisciplinary research.
