    Abstract: Wenigen anderen Ethnologen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland war es vergönnt, so wie Rüdiger Schott durch eigene Aktivitäten als individuelle Forscherpersönlichkeit maßgebend zum Aufbau und Ausbau ihrer Disziplin beizutragen. Dieser Umstand verdankt sich einerseits den von ihm seit den 60er Jahren durchgeführten Feldforschungen bei den Bulsa in Nordghana und den in den 80er Jahren angestellten ethnographischen Erhebungen bei den Lyela in Burkina Faso (vormals: Obervolta), die ihm internationale Reputation und hohe wissenschaftliche Anerkennung eingetragen haben, andererseits der permanenten Umsetzung der erreichten Forschungsergebnisse in die akademische Lehre und in weitere Forschungen, die heute als beispielhaft gelten.
    Abstract: Nicht von ungefähr gehört das Seminar für Völkerkunde der Universität Münster, das von Rüdiger Schott begründet wurde und im April 1990 auf sein 25jähriges Bestehen zurückblicken konnte, gegenwärtig zu den auch im Ausland wohlbekannten deutschen Forschungsstätten seines Fachgebiets. Dies ist nicht zuletzt deswegen der Fall, weil Schott von Anbeginn seine ethnologischen Forschungen in ständigem Austausch mit einer Reihe benachbarter Disziplinen, insbesondere mit den sozialen Handlungswissenschaften betrieben hat, wie beispielsweise mit den Wirtschaftswissenschaften und der Soziologie, der Rechtswissenschaft und den Religionswissenschaften.
    Abstract: Seine Befähigung und bis auf den heutigen Tag praktizierte Bereitschaft zur Kooperation mit diesen Nachbardisziplinen basiert auf der Einsicht, daß die Ethnologie ihre eigene Identität nur gewinnen und fortentwickeln kann, wenn sie sich auch auf der Ebene der Ausbildung ihrer analytischen Denkansätze und Grundbegriffe hierfür hinreichend kontaktfähig hält. Was Person, Leben und Werk von Rüdiger Schott angeht, so sind die äußeren Rahmendaten seines bisherigen Forscher- und Universitätslebens rasch berichtet. Jedoch wird eine auf die Forschungsinhalte und die erzielten Ergebnisse gerichtete Analyse den von ihm vorgelegten Resultaten kaum gerecht, wenn sie sich nur auf deren Relevanz für die Ethnologie als solche beschränken wollte.

    Abstract: "Islam through Objects represents the state of the field of Islamic material cultural studies. With contributions from scholars of religion, anthropologists, art historians, folklorists, historians, and other disciplines, Anna Bigelow brings together a wide range of perspectives on Islamic materiality to debunk myths of Islamic aversion to material aspects of religion. Each chapter focuses on a single object in daily use by Muslims - prayer beads, coins, amulets, a cistern well, clothing, jewellery, bodily and domestic adornments - to consider both generic and particular aspects of the object in question. These narratives will engage the reader by describing and analyzing each object in terms of its provenance, materials, uses, and history, as well as the broader history, variety and uses of the object in Islamic history and cultures. Temporal, regional, and sectarian variations in the styles, uses, and theological perspectives are also considered.     Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Sie fragen danach, inwiefern Teilhabe notwendige aber prekäre Voraussetzung für Veränderungen ist und welche dissidenten Praktiken entwickelt wurden. Der vorliegende Band soll Zugang gewähren zu einer komplexen Thematik, die zweifellos weitere Forschungen und Analysen verdient.
    Abstract: This volume examines the aesthetic and performative dimensions of Alevi cultural heritage from past to present, in an interdisciplinary framework and using a wide range of approaches. The chapters analyse traditional, contemporary and transnational developments of Alevi cultural expression including modern adaptations, local and regional practices, Alevism in a wider context, textual sources and materiality. The perspectives of the various authors, including Robert Langer, Nicolas Elias, Sinibaldo De Rosa, Jérôme Cler, Judith Haug, Janina Karolewski and others, each coming from different disciplines, demonstrate the complexity of socio-historical and socio-cultural dynamics. To conclude, the present volume is intended as a first approach to a complex issue, which definitely deserves further research and analysis.

    Abstract: Für den deutschen Kontext ist bislang weitgehend unerforscht, wie sich antisemitische Einstellungen bei Kindern bilden. Aber bereits bei den Sechs- bis Zwölfjährigen prägen sich spätere jugendliche Erscheinungsformen von antisemitischen Einstellungen. Hierbei kommt der religiösen Bildung im Grundschulkontext eine besondere Bedeutung zu, denn das Thema ›Judentum‹ ist für die höheren Grundschulklassen fest in den Lehrplänen verankert und dies führt für viele Schüler*innen zu einer Erstbegegnung mit jüdischer Geschichte, Theologie, Tradition und Kultur – eventuell auch zu einer ersten dialogischen Begegnung mit Menschen jüdischen Glaubens oder dem Besuch einer Synagoge. Dieser Band ist ein evidenter Schritt zu einer friedenspädagogisch motivierten Reform für den Religionsunterricht in der Grundschule: Stärker als bisher gesehen und umgesetzt, steht der Unterricht vor der gesamtgesellschaftlich bedeutsamen Herausforderung antisemitische Präventionsarbeit zu leisten! Even though it is still largely unexplored in the German context whether and how anti-semitic attitudes develop in children, it must be assumed that the roots for later forms of these prejudices in schoolyards and in classrooms are already growing among the six-to-twelve-year-olds. In this context, religious education is of particular importance in the context of primary schools, because the topic of Jewism is firmly anchored in the curricula for the higher elementary school classes and this may lead for many students to a first encounter with Jewish history, theology, tradition and culture – possibly also to a first dialogical encounter with people of Jewish faith or a visit to a synagogue. In this respect, this volume is a step towards a peace education-motivated reform for religious education in primary school: religious education is facing the challenge of doing anti-Semitic prevention work that is of major importance for society as a whole, and is stronger than previously seen and implemented!

    Abstract: The Routledge History of Witchcraft is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of the belief in witches from antiquity to the present day, providing both an introduction to the subject of witchcraft and an overview of the on-going debates. This extensive collection covers the entire breadth of the history of witchcraft, from the witches of Ancient Greece and medieval demonology through to the victims of the witch hunts, and onwards to children's books, horror films, and modern pagans. Drawing on the knowledge and expertise of an international team of authors, the book examines differing concepts of witchcraft that still exist in society and explains their historical, literary, religious, and anthropological origin and development, including the reflections and adaptions of this belief in art and popular culture. The volume is divided into four chronological parts, beginning with Antiquity and the Middle Ages in Part One, Early Modern witch hunts in Part Two, modern concepts of witchcraft in Part Three, and ending with an examination of witchcraft and the arts in Part Four.     Abstract: Christmas is an unrivalled annual celebration.     Abstract: Seelsorge gilt mit Recht als Herzstück der Pastoral – einer Pastoral, die sich als kreative Konfrontation des Evangeliums mit unserer Gegenwart versteht. Pastoral lässt an Hirten, an bäuerliches Leben denken, an biblische Kultur, an Agrikultur – und nicht etwa an heutige Kulturwelten. Die Konfrontation des Evangeliums mit unserer Gegenwart geht von Anfang an mit fremden, wenn nicht befremdlichen Ansprüchen einher. Seelsorge ist konzeptionell eine interkulturelle Qualität eigen, noch bevor Fragen einer interkulturellen Seelsorge laut werden, sei es aufgrund muslimischer Patientinnen und Patienten in katholischen oder evangelischen Krankenhäusern, sei es aufgrund ausländischer Priester in Deutschland, sei es aufgrund vielfältiger Migrations- und Fluchtbewegungen.     Abstract: The Routledge Handbook of Minorities in the Middle East gathers a diverse team of international scholars, each of whom provides unique expertise into the status and prospects of minority populations in the region. The dramatic events of the past decade, from the Arab Spring protests to the rise of the Islamic state, have brought the status of these populations onto centre stage. The overturn of various long-term autocratic governments in states such as Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Yemen, and the ongoing threat to government stability in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have all contributed to a new assertion of majoritarian politics amid demands for democratization and regime change. In the midst of the dramatic changes and latent armed conflict, minority populations have been targeted, marginalized, and victimized. Calls for social and political change have led many to contemplate the ways in which citizenship and governance may be changed to accommodate minorities - or indeed if such change is possible. At a time when the survival of minority populations, and the utility of the label minority has been challenged, this handbook answers the following set of research questions: What are the unique challenges of minority populations in the Middle East? How do minority populations integrate into their host societies, both as a function of their own internal choices, and as a response to majoritarian consensus on their status? Finally, given their inherent challenges, and the vast, sweeping changes that have taken place in the region over the past decade, what is the future of these minority populations? What impact have minority populations had on their societies, and to what extent will they remain prominent actors in their respective settings?

    Abstract: This volume explores religious discourses and practices of hospitality in the context of migration. It articulates the implied ambivalences and even contradictions as well as the potential to contribute to a more just world through social interconnection with others. The book features contributors from diverse national, denominational, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Their essays reveal a dichotomy of hospitality between guest and host, while tackling the meaning of home or the loss of it, interrogating both the peril and promise of the relationship between religion, chiefly Christianity, and hospitality, and focusing on the role of migrants’ vulnerability and agency, by drawing from empirical, theological, sociological and anthropological insights emerged from postcolonial migration contexts. With contributions by Andrea Bieler, Jione Havea, Claudia Hoffmann, HyeRan Kim-Cragg, Claudia Jahnel, Isolde Karle, Buhle Mpofu, Armin Nassehi, Ilona Nord, Henrietta Nyamnjoh, Regina Polak, Ludger Pries, Thomas Reynolds, Harsha Walia, Jula Well, and Birgit Weyel.     Abstract: Although we tend to suggest that clear constructions of identity are granted to religious symbols under the assumption that they distinguish between self and other explicitly, perceptions of alterity in fact play a vital role in sacral forms of representation. Markers of foreignness are used in a semantics of the exceptional that characterizes the sacral. Perceptions of difference are thus capable of making visible the remoteness of sacral forms from the profane world of experience. This book, therefore, asks: What role do traits of alterity play in the sacral context? How are various concepts of the sacred synthesized in situations of transcultural translation, for instance in the context of missionary activity? How did an artifact arrive at sacral potency in various cultures, and under what conditions did semantic shifts occur?

    Abstract: This book explores the Bible’s ongoing relevance in contemporary discussions around rape culture and gender violence. Each chapter considers the ways that biblical texts and themes engage with various forms of gender violence, including the subjective, physical violence of rape, the symbolic violence of misogynistic and heteronormative discourses, and the structural violence of patriarchal power systems. The authors within this volume attempt to name (and shame) the multiple forms of gender violence present within the biblical traditions, contesting the erasure of this violence within both the biblical texts themselves and their interpretive traditions. They also consider the complex connections between biblical gender violence and the perpetuation and validation of rape culture in contemporary popular culture. This volume invites new and ongoing conversations about the Bible’s complicity in rape-supportive cultures and practices, challenging readers to read these texts in light of the global crisis of gender violence

    Abstract: This volume explores the multiple intersections between rape culture, gender violence, and religion. Each chapter considers the ways that religious texts, theologies, and traditions engage with contemporary cultural discourses of gender, sexuality, gender violence, and rape culture. Particularly, they interrogate the multifaceted roles that religious texts and teachings can have in challenging, confirming, querying, or redefining socio-cultural understandings of rape culture and gender violence. Unique to this volume, authors explore the topic from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, theology, biblical studies, gender and queer studies, politics, modern history, art history, linguistics, religious studies, and English literature. Together, these interdisciplinary approaches resist the tendency to oversimplify the complexity of the connections between religion, gender violence, and rape culture; rather, the volume offers readers a multi-vocal and multi-perspectival view of this crucial subject, inviting readers to think deeply about it in light of the global crisis of gender violence

    Abstract: Encounters, networks, identities and diversity are at the core of the history of Buddhism. They are also the focus of Buddhist Encounters and Identities across East Asia , edited by Ann Heirman, Carmen Meinert and Christoph Anderl.     Abstract: "How can we rethink the terms of Enlightenment anthropology in a manner and an idiom appropriate to the contemporary era? The essays collated here argue for anthropology's use in acknowledging, exploring and interpreting divergence and ideological conflict over human meaning. The volume is structured around some of the key themes that the Enlightenment fostered, including human nature, time, Earth and the cosmos, beauty, order, harmony and design, morals, and the query of whether wealthy nations make for healthy publics. It focuses in particular on how 'moral sentiment' offered a guiding idea in Enlightenment thought. The idea of 'moral sentiment' is central to the essays' grappling with the ethical anxieties of contemporary anthropology. Auch die ökumenische Debatte um den gerechten Frieden ist in hohem Maße von kirchlichen Divergenzen geprägt.
    Abstract: Just peace stands for a fundamental change of applied ethics: The focus of this new concept is no longer on war but rather on peace in its mutual relatedness to justice. Yet the question of using armed force remains to be of central importance even for just peace. Ines-Jacqueline Werkner shows: The current discourse on the international responsibility to provide protection and the conflict between the protection of humans in danger and the nonviolence envisaged that goes with it reveal contradictions and controversies. Even the ecumenical debate about just peace is significantly shaped by ecclesiastical divergences.

    Abstract: Al-Qaida and Islamic State continue to captivate the world with their extreme violence. While much attention has been given to the operations and doctrines of jihadi groups, this is the first book to explore their culture. Using a wealth of primary sources, the authors examine what goes on inside these organizations and what daily life is like for the foot-soldiers. They show that Islamist militants have a rich aesthetic culture and do much more than fight and train. Life in a jihadi group is in fact filled with poetry and music, and fighters spend time on surprising things like dream interpretation and weeping. Readers will discover an entirely new perspective on radical Islamists: that despite their reputation as macho men, they value humility, artistic sensitivity, and displays of emotion. Cultural practices are essential for understanding the jihadi worldview and may shed important new light on decision-making and recruitment processes in extremist groups.     Abstract: If piety, faith, and conviction constitute one side of the religious coin, then imperfection, uncertainty, and ambivalence constitute the other. Yet, scholars tend to separate these two domains and place experiences of inadequacy in everyday religious life – such as a wavering commitment, religious negligence or weakness in faith – outside the domain of religion ‘proper.’ Straying from the Straight Path breaks with this tendency by examining how self-perceived failure is, in many cases, part and parcel of religious practice and experience.     Abstract: Among the assumptions interrogated in this volume, edited by Anthony E. Clark, is if Christianity should most accurately be identified as “Chinese” when it displays vestiges of Chinese cultural aesthetics, or whether Chinese Christianity is more indigenous when it is allowed to form its own theological framework. In other words, can theological uniqueness also function as a legitimate Chinese Christian cultural expression in the formation of its own ecclesial identity? Also central to what is explored in this book is how missionary influences, consciously or unconsciously, introduced seeds of independence into the cultural ethos of China’s Christian community. Chinese girls who pushed “the limits of proper behaviour,” for example, added to the larger sense of confidence as China’s Christians began to resist the model of Christianity they had inherited from foreign missionaries.     Abstract: 'Religiöse Bildung und interkulturelles Lernen' - so lautet der Titel und das Programm eines ErasmusPlusProjekts, welches das Europäische Institut für interkulturelle und interreligiöse Forschung mit Sitz im Fürstentum Liechtenstein zusammen mit ausgewählten Projektpartnern durchgeführt hat und dessen Erträge nun in Form dieser Publikation einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit präsentiert werden. Im Zuge der aktuellen Diskussion über Religion und Bildung geht es bei diesem Projekt einerseits um grundsätzliche religionspädagogische Belange im Kontext von Schule und Hochschule, andererseits zugleich um Anliegen und Ausrichtung interkulturellen Lernens in der Begegnung von Menschen unterschiedlicher Konfessionen und Religionen in einer zunehmend pluralen Gesellschaft. Die strategische Lernpartnerschaft von verschiedenen Institutionen und Personen in Deutschland, Liechtenstein und in der Türkei soll in exemplarischer Weise dokumentieren, dass das gemeinsame Bemühen um länderüberschreitende sowie religionsübergreifende Begegnung und Verständigung in Europa auch und gerade am Ort von Schule und Hochschule von elementarer Bedeutung ist.

    Abstract: The fields of gender and religious studies have often been criticized for neglecting to engage with one another, and this volume responds to this dearth of interaction by placing the fields in an intimate dialogue.     Abstract: Bourdieu in Africa: Exploring the Dynamics of Religious Fields offers a view of religions as social games played by interested actors. Analyzing practices as strategic moves, this critical approach conceptualizes the religious field as relations of exchange and competition between experts and laity, and explores how the actors’ habitus, including religious beliefs, serve to misrecognize and thus legitimize relations of power within the religious sphere and beyond. The authors discuss the volatile religious fields of Nigeria, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and South Africa, with their variably configured tensions between African traditions, Christianity and Islam, but also consider the interrelations of religion with other social fields, with politics, economy, education and law

    Abstract: Friedhöfe sind Trauerorte und langlebige Biotope des regionalen Gedächtnisses. Denn Grabmale erzählen nicht nur Familiengeschichte, sondern auch Stadtgeschichte. Die Geschichte eines Gemeinwesens ist immer auch die Geschichte von Toten und Totengedenken. Die Toten und ihre letzten Ruhestätten gehören nicht nur den Angehörigen. Im kulturellen Gedächtnis mischen sich Privates und Öffentliches, Grabstelle und öffentlicher Raum. Gedächtnis bekommt hier eine räumliche Gestalt, es kann begangen werden. Kirchen und Kommunen sind als Friedhofsträger und Erinnerungsgemeinschaften herausgefordert, diese Bedarfe in eine sinnvolle Gestalt zu überführen. In interdisziplinärer Weite werden aus sozialwissenschaftlicher, kulturwissenschaftlicher und theologischer Perspektive die sepulkral-memorialen Formen diskutiert und ausgelotet.
