Abstract: To remain competitive in today's digital world, large businesses need to move fast. That's why so many companies plan to shift from monolithic onsite architectures to applications designed solely to operate on cloud computing platforms. But the question remains: exactly how do companies successfully migrate toward cloud-native technologies and practices? According to the Cloud Platform Survey conducted by O'Reilly Media and Dynatrace in 2016, 92% of respondents anticipate that their organizations will go cloud-native within the next 5 years. Based on their experience, Dynatrace identifies three stages that businesses move through on their journey to the cloud. This report details each stage of the strategy, and includes case studies that show you how to tackle problems that are both technical and cultural. You'll also get a summary of responses to the survey. The cloud migration strategy includes: Stage one: migrate existing applications to virtualized infrastructure with a lift-and-shift approach and implement an automated continuous integration/continuous delivery pipeline Stage two: move your monolithic application toward microservice architectures, with services running in containers on a PaaS service Stage three: Shift toward dynamic, rapidly scaling microservices and deploy services across the cloud platform's software-defined architecture Anna Gerber is a core member of NodeBotsAU. She is also a Technical Project Manager with the ITEE eResearch Group at the University of Queensland, Australia. She can be found on Twitter annagerber. Abstract: Choosing a monitoring tool can be a tedious exercise. Perhaps you need to inspect sFlow traffic. Or measure latency between worker threads and your kafka queue. Which tools are available for your specific task and how do you weigh the options? This free reference guide helps you categorize your problem and then presents a collection of tools that meet your needs. Using a hierarchy, this ebook lets you quickly filter out tools that don't apply. Do you want a hosted tool or to manage it onsite? Will it collect measurements or process them? What exactly do you want to monitor? Once you pin down the requirements, Monitoring Taxonomy takes you to the tools that match. This ebook describes 62 open source and commercial tools in eight different categories. Monitoring cries out for a taxonomy system. While every other engineering discipline relies on rigid classification, "monitoring" has become a catchall for a wide range of tools and activities. This ebook helps overwhelmed operations engineers quickly narrow down the choices. David Josephsen is an engineer on the Ops team at Librato. He is also a sometimes book-authoring blogger and purveyor of awkward conference talks. He has never lost a game of Calvinball.

Abstract: To ensure high availability, today's applications typically include multiple instances of the application server, database, and web server. If you choose a containerized solution, each component replica needs to reside in a separate container, making these applications difficult to manage. This report shows you how Kubernetes can help you orchestrate containerized applications across multiple hosts. You'll learn basic Kubernetes concepts and mechanisms for automating the deployment, maintenance, and scaling of your Java applications. Author Arun Gupta-Principal Open Source Technologist at Amazon Web Services-demonstrates how Kubernetes orchestration simplifies the plumbing needed to get containers up and running at all times. Although the examples in this report use Java, the concepts are applicable for anybody interested in getting started with Kubernetes. In this report, you'll learn: Basic Kubernetes concepts from the developer and operations perspective How to create a single-node local development cluster and multi-node cluster How Java applications communicate with a database running on Kubernetes Advanced concepts such as stateful containers, scaling, health check, the rolling update of an application, and sharing resources across the cluster How to monitor your application's performance with Heapster, InfluxDB, and Grafana

Abstract: Like it or not, JavaScript is not going away. No matter what framework or "compiles-to-js" language or library you use, bugs and performance concerns will always be an issue if the underlying quality of your JavaScript is poor. Rewrites, including porting to the framework of the month, are terribly expensive and unpredictable. The bugs won't magically go away, and can happily reproduce themselves in a new context. To complicate things further, features will get dropped, at least temporarily. This book provides clear guidance on how best to avoid these pathological approaches to writing JavaScript. Bad code doesn't have to stay that way. And making it better doesn't have to be intimidating or unreasonably expensive.

Abstract: At a time when nearly every vertical, regardless of domain, seems to need software running in the cloud to make money, microservices provide the agility and drastically reduced time to market you require. This hands-on guide shows you how to create, test, compile, and deploy microservices, using the ASP.NET Core free and open-source framework. Along the way, you'll pick up good, practical habits for building powerful and robust services. Abstract: Statistical methods are a key part of of data science, yet very few data scientists have any formal statistics training. Courses and books on basic statistics rarely cover the topic from a data science perspective. This practical guide explains how to apply various statistical methods to data science, tells you how to avoid their misuse, and gives you advice on what's important and what's not. Many data science resources incorporate statistical methods but lack a deeper statistical perspective. If you're familiar with the R programming language, and have some exposure to statistics, this quick reference bridges the gap in an accessible, readable format. With this book, you'll learn: Why exploratory data analysis is a key preliminary step in data science How random sampling can reduce bias and yield a higher quality dataset, even with big data How the principles of experimental design yield definitive answers to questions How to use regression to estimate outcomes and detect anomalies Key classification techniques for predicting which categories a record belongs to Statistical machine learning methods that "learn" from data Unsupervised learning methods for extracting meaning from unlabeled data

Abstract: Hold on, because we're entering the age of smart transportation at astonishing speed. By 2020, roughly one in every five vehicles (250 million) will be on the road. Within the next 10 years, the very idea of manually operating a car, truck, ship, plane, or train may seem old fashioned, as the overarching trend will be toward greater automation at every level of transportation. Are we ready for it? In this report, Mike Barlow examines the autonomous vehicle ecosystem through interviews with several technology firms, including Cloudera, that are busy working on various aspects of connected transportation. Vehicles in motion-on land, in the air, or on the sea-will generate and transmit huge quantities of data to transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, traffic signals), and other vehicles. The data from your car, in fact, may soon be more valuable than the car itself. Get a copy of this report and learn how the vehicles of tomorrow (or maybe the day after tomorrow) will impact mobility management, safety, vehicle management, operator well-being, entertainment, and even the way cities are designed.

Abstract: The perimeter defenses guarding your network perhaps are not as secure as you think. Hosts behind the firewall have no defenses of their own, so when a host in the "trusted" zone is breached, access to your data center is not far behind. That's an all-too-familiar scenario today. With this practical book, you'll learn the principles behind zero trust architecture, along with details necessary to implement it. The Zero Trust Model treats all hosts as if they're internet-facing, and considers the entire network to be compromised and hostile. By taking this approach, you'll focus on building strong authentication, authorization, and encryption throughout, while providing compartmentalized access and better operational agility. Understand how perimeter-based defenses have evolved to become the broken model we use today Explore two case studies of zero trust in production networks on the client side (Google) and on the server side (PagerDuty) Get example configuration for open source tools that you can use to build a zero trust network Learn how to migrate from a perimeter-based network to a zero trust network in production

Abstract: From the moment your organization starts collecting data, it's crucial to make key decisions about governance. What data should you gather? How do you ensure it's accurate and current? Where do you store it, and for how long? Today, many policies for gathering and sharing data are determined in business suites, rather than by the nature of the data itself. In order to meet strategic business requirements, you must understand and define the rules that manage your organization's data assets. In this report, you'll examine the many aspects of data-driven governance, particularly how this approach makes automation, enforcement, and security tasks easier. Author Federico Castanedo of Vodafone Group describes the practices and frameworks for regulatory compliance, including technology that can marry your policies to data you collect and provide fine-grained access controls. Many businesses collect large volumes of structured, unstructured, geospatial, and other data types that often require NoSQL databases alongside relational platforms. This detailed report explores how multi-model databases support a wide range of data models against a single integrated backend, enabling your organization to easily define data-driven governance policies at scale-and ultimately to help you reduce compliance costs. Discover a new approach that establishes governance at the data level versus the system level in order to reduce risk, facilitate operational decisions, and improve integrity.

Abstract: Every year, developers learn new frameworks and languages not only to enhance productivity, but also to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry. And yet there's always a chance that tools you learn today won't be around next year. So you end up wasting your time, and worse, you waste the opportunity to learn something more relevant. This report examines the benefits of developing on a multi-model database that supports document, graph, relational, key-value, and other data models. Author Eric Laquer of MarkLogic describes tools and techniques for working directly with data as it arrives from the source, enabling your team to explore, on the fly, what a potential solution for a customer will look like. By leveraging what you already know about modeling and indexing data, a multi-model database will help you apply data management to the DevOps model and move past the limitations of rows and tables altogether. This report explores: How multi-model database management systems support a data-driven approach to software development Why applications that support data integration and analytic use cases can break a relational data model Case studies of two Fortune 50 companies that successfully adopted multi-model databases Why a data-driven approach requires collaboration among DBAs, sysadmins, analysts, and compliance and risk managers

Abstract: Messaging is one of the more poorly understood areas of IT; most developers and architects have only a passing familiarity with how broker-based messaging technologies work. This practical report not only helps you get up to speed on the essentials of messaging, but also compares two of today's most popular messaging technologies-Apache ActiveMQ and Apache Kafka. Author and consultant Jakub Korab describes use cases and design choices that lead developers to very different approaches for developing message-based systems. You'll come away with a high-level understanding of both ActiveMQ and Kafka, including how they should and should not be used, how they handle concerns such as throughput and high-availability, and what to look out for when considering other messaging technologies in future. Understand the types of problems that messaging systems address Explore three primary messaging patterns: point-to-point, publish-subscribe, and a hybrid of both Dive into ActiveMQ, a classic broker-centric design implemented through Java libraries that works for a broad range of messaging use cases Examine Kafka, a distributed system that can be scaled to provide massive performance and fault tolerance through replication Learn the mechanical complexities that message-based systems need to address, and some patterns you can apply to deal with those complexities
