    Abstract: "While Black women's intellectual history continues to grow as an important subfield in historical studies, there remains a gap in scholarship devoted to the topic. To date, major volumes on American intellectual history tend to exclude the words, ideas, and contributions of these influential individuals. A Seat at the Table: Black Women Public Intellectuals in US History and Culture seeks to fill this void, presenting essays on African American women within the larger context of American intellectual history. Divided into four parts, the volume considers women in politics, art, government, journalism, media, education, and the military. Essays feature prominent figures such as Shirley Chisholm, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Charlotta Bass, and anti-abortion activist Mildred Fay Jefferson, as well as lesser-known individuals. The anthology begins with a discussion of the founders in Black women's public intellectualism, providing a framework for understanding the elements, structure, and concerns central to their lives and work in the nineteenth century. The second section focuses on leaders in the Black Christian intellectual tradition, the civil rights era, and modern politics. Part three examines Black women in society and culture in the twentieth century, with essays on such topics as artists in the New Negro era; Joycelyn Elders, a public servant and former surgeon general; and America's foremost Black woman influencer, Oprah. Lastly, part four concerns Black women and their ideas about public service-particularly military service-with essays on service members during World War II and the post-WWII military. Taken as a whole, A Seat at the Table is an important anthology that helps to establish the validity and existence of heretofore neglected intellectual traditions in the public square"--

The author theorises and positions incels' performances of masculinity against a backdrop of broader social sciences and linguistic literature, and discusses some of the limitations of different lenses through which incels have previously been understood, as well some of the ethical issues involved with researching a hostile community. Corpus linguistic methods and netnographic reflections are used to explore how incels construct ideologies about gender, gendered social actors, and race/ethnicity, as well as where these concepts intersect.     Abstract: Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity-and not just equal rights-of black people. The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history that traces the genesis of the ideas that have built into the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Drawing on the work of revolutionary black public intellectuals, including Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Anna Julia Cooper, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and Martin Luther King Jr., Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that 〈"Black Lives Matter〉" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement. He also illuminates the crucial difference between the problem signaled by the social media hashtag and how we think that we ought to address the problem. As Lebron states, police body cameras, or even the exhortation for civil rights mean nothing in the absence of equality and dignity. To upset dominant practices of abuse, oppression and disregard, we must reach instead for radical sensibility. Radical sensibility requires that we become cognizant of the history of black thought and activism in order to make sense of the emotions, demands, and argument of present-day activists and public thinkers.     Abstract: Die georgischsprachigen Ingiloer in Aserbaidschan“ erforscht ethnographisch zum einen das Verhältnis von Staat und Bürgern im Allgemeinen und zum anderen die Rolle der ethnischen Zugehörigkeit und des Minderheitenstatus einer bestimmten (teils christlichen teils muslimischen) Gruppe in Aserbaidschan. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht die Frage nach der Repräsentation und ethnischen Führungspositionen: Wer spricht für die Minderheit? Mittels welcher Legitimationsstrategien? Das Buch analysiert die strukturelle Integration der Ingiloer Minderheit, ihre Partizipation im sozialen, politischen und ökonomischen Alltag des unabhängigen Aserbaidschan und vor allem ihre Rechte als Staatsbürger. Die Autorin untersucht den Integrationsprozess sowohl „von oben“ als auch „von unten“. Die erste Perspektive betrachtet den Staat (vor und nach der Unabhängigkeit) und seine Rolle im Integrationsprozess. Es geht um staatliche Strategien der Steuerung dieses Prozesses und ihre sozialen Konsequenzen. Die zweite Perspektive nimmt die Position der Ingiloer in diesem Prozess in den Blick und untersucht ihren Standpunkt und ihre Präsenz in den Institutionen, über die sie mit dem aserbaidschanischen Staat verhandeln. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass die vielfältigen Facetten der Staatsbürgerschaft unterschiedliche Diskurse und Räume erzeugen, in denen die Ingiloer als Gruppe und als Individuen manövrieren. Ihr Handeln resultiert in diversen Prozessen, Transformationen und Modifizierungen bestehender Beziehungen sowie in Geschichten, welche die Veränderungen von Strukturen illustrieren, von religiöser oder sprachlicher Zugehörigkeit bis hin zu Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen oder Ritualen. Die Geschichte der Ingiloer ähnelt der zahlreicher anderer ehemals sowjetischer ethnischer Gruppen und eröffnet somit auch eine Perspektive auf die sowjetische Vergangenheit. Beobachtungen im Feld sowie Interviews zeigen, dass die Identifikationen der Ingiloer komplex und situationsabhängig sind und die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Attribute in Bezug auf Zeit und Raum variiert. Religion und Sprache eröffnen ein Identitätsfeld, innerhalb dessen die Beziehung des Individuums zur Gruppe und damit Struktur und Merkmale der Gruppe deutlich werden. Religiosität stellt ein wichtiges Element der ingiloischen Identität dar und hängt mit der Staatsangehörigkeit zusammen. Neben dem Islam und der Sprache kann auch der Grad der Religiosität als ethnischer Marker der Ingiloer im Kontext des heutigen Aserbaidschan verstanden werden.

    Abstract: This book explores the largely unexamined history of Africans who lived, studied, and worked in the German Democratic Republic. African students started coming to the East in 1951 as invited guests who were offered scholarships by the East German government to prepare them for primarily technical and scientific careers once they returned home to their own countries. Drawn from previously unexplored archives in Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia, and the United Kingdom, African Students in East Germany, 1949-1975 uncovers individual stories and reconstructs the pathways that African students took in their journeys to the GDR and what happened once they got there. The book places these experiences within the larger context of German history, questioning how ideas of African racial difference that developed from the eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries impacted East German attitudes toward the students. The book additionally situates African experiences in the overlapping contexts of the Cold War and decolonization. During this time, nations across the Western and Soviet blocs were inviting Africans to attend universities and vocational schools as part of a drive to offer development aid to newly independent countries and encourage them to side with either the United States or Soviet Union in the Cold War. African leaders recognized their significance to both Soviet and American blocs, and played on the desire of each to bring newly independent nations into their folds. Students also recognized their importance to Cold War competition, and used it to make demands of the East German state. The book is thus located at the juncture of many different histories, including those of modern Germany, modern Africa, the Global Cold War, and decolonization. (Umschlagtext)

    Abstract: The African museum landscape is changing. A new generation of scholars and curators is setting international standards for the reappraisal and revision of colonial collections, the conception of curatorial spaces, and the integration of new groups of actors. In the face of the ghostly survival of colonial epistemologies in archives, displays, and architectures, it is a matter of breaking up institutional encrustations and infrastructures, inventing new museum practices, and bringing archives to life. Scholars and museum experts predominantly working in Africa and South America discuss the post/colonial history of museums, their political-economic entanglements, the significance of diasporic objects, as well as the prospects for restitution and its consequences.     Abstract: Stephan Dualla Misipo wurde am 4. Juni 1901 in Duala, der Hauptstadt der damaligen deutschen Kolonie Kamerun, geboren. Die Familie Misipo gehörte der Oberschicht der Ethnie der Duala an. Dualla Misipo besuchte die deutsche Regierungsschule in Duala und reiste im November 1913 in Begleitung eines deutschen Beamten auf der Eleonora Woermann nach Deutschland. In Herborn, einer kleinen Stadt in Mittelhessen, ging er zur Schule. Diesen und spätere Abschnitte seines Lebens bis etwa 1930 hat er in Der Junge aus Duala sehr ausführlich beschrieben.Mitte der 1920er-Jahre lernte Dualla Misipo, wahrscheinlich in Frankfurt, die Postbeamtentochter und Stenotypistin Luise Dutine kennen. Die Geschichte ihrer Liebesbeziehung, die Zweifel der Familie an der Zukunftsfähigkeit einer Verbindung zwischen einem schwarzen Mann und einer weißen Frau und die Anfeindungen der Umwelt gegenüber dem Paar sind ein zentrales, wenn nicht sogar das zentrale Thema des Buches.Die Gewalt und Demütigungen aufgrund seiner Hautfarbe und seiner Herkunft, die er von klein auf in verschiedenster Form erleben musste, werden in Der Junge aus Duala einnehmend geschildert: von gnadenloser Prügel, die er und seine Kameraden wegen Kleinigkeiten vom deutschen Schullehrer in Duala bezogen, von der ungestraften Vergewaltigung einer Verwandten durch deutsche Matrosen, welche die Großmutter nach der Tat straflos abziehen lassen musste, den schreienden und johlenden Kindern, die Dualla und seinen Pflegeeltern auf ihren Sonntagsspaziergängen in den Dörfern um Herborn hinterherliefen, und den Anfeindungen und verächtlichen Blicken, denen er und seine Braut ausgesetzt waren. Damit stellt das Werk eine Mischung aus Autobiographie, Ethnographie und Sachbuch dar, wobei die Grenzen zwischen den Genres nicht immer klar zu ziehen sind.Für viele wären solche traumatischen Erlebnisse zu einem Boden geworden, auf dem Hass, Verzweiflung und Frustrationen wachsen und gedeihen konnten. Nicht so bei Dualla Misipo.     Abstract: A thought-provoking look at how racial resentment, rather than racial prejudice alone, motivate a growing resistance among whites to improve the circumstances faced by racial minorities.0 In Racial Resentment in the Political Mind, Darren W. Davis and David C. Wilson challenge the commonly held notion that all racial negativity, disagreements, and objections to policies that seek to help racial minorities stem from racial prejudice. They argue that racial resentment arises from just-world beliefs and appraisals of deservingness that help explain the persistence of racial inequality in America in ways more consequential than racism or racial prejudice alone. 0 The culprits, as many White people see it, are undeserving people of color, who are perceived to benefit unfairly from, and take advantage of, resources that come at Whites' expense-a worldview in which any attempt at modest change is seen as a challenge to the status quo and privilege. Yet, as Davis and Wilson reveal, many Whites have become racially resentful due to their perceptions that African Americans skirt the "rules of the game" and violate traditional values by taking advantage of unearned resources. Resulting attempts at racial progress lead Whites to respond in ways that retain their social advantage-opposing ameliorative policies, minority candidates, and other advancement on racial progress. Because racial resentment is rooted in beliefs about justice, fairness, and deservingness, ordinary citizens, who may not harbor racist motivations, may wind up in the same political position as racists, but for different reasons
